"Optimal Cell Load and Throughput in Green Small Cell
Networks with Generalized Cell Association." IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications 34.5 (2016): 1058-72. ProQuest. Web. 20 Oct. 2016. Summary: Liu explores the fundamental interactions between small cell association, small cell load, and bandwidth of energy efficient small cell networks. These small cell networks are formed around base stations that make up homogeneous cell networks to provide an energy efficient solution to some of the high power consumption associated with multiple small cells. By increasing the number of small cells in a given area, speed and connectivity will become more consistent with less packet loss and lower latency. Traditionally, macro cell base stations account for 80% of the overall power consumption used throughout cellular networks. The advantage of using small cells is that they provide a low operational cost and have the ability to automatically switch their operation states when not in use, thus saving power. With faster networks in smart cities, city resources can be used effectively and efficiently to provide the community with the proper services. Small cells BSs will help in this interaction between faster cellular networks and the push for increased community services. Analysis: Liu and his colleague Wang, both have extensive knowledge in mechanical engineering and electrical engineering. They seek to explain that small cell association can inherently increase cellular connectivity and throughout. Macro BSs have become power hungry and have slowed down considerably because of the increased network flow and bad location selections upon which they have been placed. By using mathematical equations, they have come up with ways in which small cell location and power consumption can benefit existing cellular networks. Wang has several research topics including, radio resource management, heterogeneous wireless network design, and mobile cloud computing for mobile applications. Reflection: Throughout this article the authors talk about certain topics that can directly affect my research. They provide examples and definitions that will help me and the reader understand how small cells can help improve power consumption and increase network connectivity. By elaborating on how small cells extend the range of connectivity, I can propose solutions that can inform readers of how this problem can be addressed. Smart cities need to be able to effectively use their resources so that they can assist with any problem local community members may have.
