1. Gerund and Infinitive
After like it is sometimes possible to use either gerund or infinitive, but there tends to be a slight
difference in implication.
Like+gerund a. Usually means enjoy; b. Usually implies that the action is/was performed;
Eg. I like skating = I enjoy skating (and do skate).
Like+infnitive a. Has more the meaning of approve of, b. In the affirmative gives no indication as to
whether the action is performed or not and in the negative implies that it is not performed.
Eg. I didnt like saying it usually means I said it unwillingly, but I didnt like to say it usually means I
didnt say it(because it didnt seem right or sensible)

Verbs followed by a noun +past participle


These verbs are followed by an object and a present participle or an infinitive without to. The verbs in
italics may also be followed by a clause introduced by that.

(Note:When followed by a that clause, several of these verbs suggest an intellectual awareness rather
than a physical perception).
These verbs arecommonly called verbs of perception. We can compare the use of the infinitve after
these verbs with the use of a simple verb form, and the present participle with a continuous form:
I saw him enter the shop. (I saw the whole action- he opened the door, went in and disappeared)
I saw him entering the shop. (This action was in progress when I saw him)
After these verbs in the passive, we use the infinitive with to or the present participle.
The man was seen to board a train at Euston.
The man was last seen boarding a train at Euston.
