Pre-lab questions Lab 8

Answer the following questions and turn in to your GSI at the beginning of lab section for Lab 8.
Questions from Lab 7
1. (1 pt) Atropine is a medication that blocks muscarinic acetylcholine receptors. If you had put
atropine onto the frog heart, how would that have affected the heart rate? Briefly explain your
reasoning.
Atropine has the ability to block the effects of parasympathetic nervous stimulation. It
blocks the effects of acetylcholine and inhibits the effects of parasympathetic activity on the
heart, smooth muscles, and glands. If the heart rate is decreased because of vagal
stimulation, therefore, the administration of atropine will INCREASE this rate. atropine is
sympathomimetric in its action.
2. (1 pt) Fill in the blanks using one of the words provided for each blank:
When high K+ concentration is put onto the frog heart, the K+ concentration gradient across the
increases
cell membrane ____________[increases/decreases].
This causes the cardiac muscle cells to

______________[depolarize/hyperpolarize],
resulting in a ________________[longer/shorter]
depolarize
longer
slower
refractory period, thus making the heart rate _______________[faster/slower].

Questions from Lab 8

3. (1.5 pts) What events in the heart do the P, R, and T waves in an ECG represent?
R = atrial depolarization
R = ventricular depolarization
T = ventricular repolarization

4. (1 pt) When measuring the blood pressure using a pulse plethysmograph, why does the pulse
disappear when the blood pressure cuff is fully inflated?
Arterial blood flow to the arm is stopped, so no pulse can be detected in the finger.

5. a) (0.5 pts) What is stroke volume?

Volume of blood pumped by heart during each beat.

b) (0.5 pts) Write an equation relating stroke volume to cardiac output.

cardiac output = stroke volume x heart rate

C.O. = S.V. x H.R.

6. (1 pt) Calculate your Expected Vital Capacity. (Show your work!)

VC = [21.78-0.101x21] x (173) = 3401 mL

7. True/False (1.5 pts)

a) Diastolic pressure in the aorta and large arteries reaches zero during heart relaxation (diastole
phase).
False
b) You should not leave the blood pressure cuff inflated on your subjects arm for more than 5
minutes.
True
c) The Korotkoff method directly measures the pressure in the arteries.
False

8. (2 pt) Define the following terms and clearly label them on the graph.
Vital capacity: the greatest volume of air that can be expelled from the lungs after
maximum inspiration
Expiratory Reserve Volume: volume of air retained in the lungs during normal
respiration but can be removed via forced expiration
Inspiratory Reserve Volume: extra volume which can be taken into lungs by a deep
inspiration
Tidal Volume: volume of gas expired or inspired during a normal respiratory cycle
