Notes (key concepts, direct quotes, etc.)

My notes, commentary

"The civic mission of schools is the foundation for

the state social studies, where social studies is
designed to prepare students for their roles as
citizens and decision makers in adverse democratic
society."
"Even in the context of high-stakes testing and
content knowledge expertise, the citizenship
purpose ranked highest among the provided
options."

p.199

"Elise wrote about 'involvement for the benefit of

society' while Marcus stated that it is important for
citizens to be involved with 'changing the future by
our behavior today'".

p.200

"Involvement was characterized by attention to

issues in the local community and beyond. Their
concern was not communicating what they knew to
students, but rather helping them gain a broader
understanding of perspectives uncommon to them."

I think that social studies allows students to learn the vocabulary in

which they will eventually use when they are adults as the role of a
citizen. Our government is a democracy and its the school's mission
to give them the knowledge about this.
Standardized test are a big scare amongst many school districts
because of how involved and developed the content actually is.
However, for subjects such as social studies, this is the type of
content they will be use when they are finished with school. Teaching
this valuable information to students serves as a huge purpose
towards their futures and fearing a test shouldnt stop them from
learning about it.
Many teacher can agree that social studies plays a huge role for the
future of many students. Whether people want to accept it or not,
social studies is used basically every day as an adult. It doesnt make
sense to teach people how a government runs once there are already
an adult, they need to be prepared for those types of things before
they become adults with responsibilities.
Teachers arent just teaching this to students because they think that
its common information in which everyone should know, They are
also trying to reach out to those who honestly dont have a clue
and/or have never considered learning about.

Connections to previous MR:

After reading this study, a lot of the information talks about the reasons to why social studies is not doing as good or creating
as much interest for the students as it once did. This relates back to the previous post about how America is not as good as it
once was because people lost the value of it as the years past. This applies to this study because teachers are taking various

steps towards why they believe social studies is important or what the true purpose is when teaching this subject. Overall, i
think that study is pretty useful, especially for a future teacher. I am able to get the opinions of other teachers who have been
in the field for many years and to see what their main reason for teaching this subject for is helpful.
