PRECAUTION TO BE TAKEN BEFORE WELDING

1.

Edge Preparation and Fitting

The edge preparation is to be accurate and uniform and the parts to be welded are to be fitted
in accordance with the approved joint detail. All means adopted for correcting improper fitting
are to be to the satisfaction of Authorized Inspector.
2.

Alignment

In general, strong backs, or other appliances used for this purpose are to be so arranged as to
allow for expansion and contraction during production welding.
Clamping via the use of tools, jigs, and machinery are critical in the manufacturing of welded
structures. Clamps provide restraint, which inhibit movement of the aligned pieces. If the pieces
move during welding, gaps and misalignment are welded into the assembly and result in assembly distortion.

CLEANLINESS

All surfaces to be welded shall free from water, moisture, grease, loose mill scale, excessive
rust or paint.
Primer coatings of ordinary thickness shall be removed about 20mm of each side of welding.
Slag and scale are to be removed not only from the edges to be welded but also from each
pass or layer before the deposition of subsequent passes or layers.
5.

Preheat

When welding is performed under high humidity conditions or when the temperature of steel is
below 0C (32F), the base metal is to be preheated to at least 16C (60F). The use of
preheat and Interpass temperature control are to be considered when welding high strength
steels, materials of thick cross-section or materials subject to high restraint. When preheat is
used, the preheat and interpass temperatures are to be in accordance with the accepted

welding procedure to maintain dry surfaces and minimize the possibility of the formation of
fractures.
6.

Tack Welds

Tack welds of consistently good quality, made with the same grade of filler metal as intended
for production welding. Preheat may be necessary prior to tack welding when the materials to
be joined are highly restrained.
For Butt weld tacking, the joint should be tack welded every 300 mm minimum for plate joint.
The preferred tack weld length should be between 8 and 10 mm when the thinnest plate is less
than 7 mm.

For Fillet weld tacking, the length of tack weld should be maximum 50 mm.

7.

Run-on and Run-off Tabs

When used, run-on and run-off tabs are to be designed to minimize the possibility of high-stress
concentrations and base-metal and weld-metal cracking.

WELDING DIRECTION

WELDING SEQUENCE

The fabrication of shipboard panels and units involves a series the welding assembly steps.
The standards step for Hull assembly welding process should be as follows:
a) Start with the transverse hull plating butt joint
b) Then the longitudinal hull plating butt joint
c) Main frame butt joint and then secondary stiffener butt
d) Assembly of webs and flange points where two system are meet
e) Welding of the deck beam and girder. Transverse first then longitudinal. Start with the
main structure with more weld to the secondary with lesser weld

After fabrication panel complete. The next step will be continuing with installation angle bar
and then subsequently with main frame. Figure below illustrates a preferred sequence for
welding transverse structures, in which a center-out approach is used. The same general
center-out philosophy is also applied during unit assembly. Additionally, back-stepping techniques are employed to minimize opening of the weld joints during welding.
