DATABASES TO IMPROVE BUSINESS PERFORMANCE

AND DECISION MAKING
Big Data doesnt refer to any specific quantity, but usually refers to data
in petabyte and exabyte rangein other words, billions to trillions of records,
all from different sources.

Business Intelligence Infrastructure

Data Warehouse is a database that stores current and historical data of
potential interest to decision makers throughout the company.
Data Mart is a subset of a data warehouse in which summarized or highly
focused portion of the organizations data is placed in a separate database
for a specific population of users.
Hadoop is a n open-source software framework managed by Apache
Software Foundation that enables distributed parallel processing of huge
amounts of data across inexpensive computers.
In-memory computing relies primarily on a computers main memory
(RAM) for data storage.
Analytic platforms feature preconfigured hardware-software systems that
are specifically designed for query processing and analytics.

Analytical tools: Relationships, Patterns, Trends

Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) - supports multidimensional data
analysis, enabling users to view the same data in different ways using
multiple dimensions.
Data Mining more discovery driven. It provides insights into corporate
data that cannot be obtained with OLAP by finding hidden patterns and
relationships in large databases and inferring rules frim them to predict
future behavior.
Types of information from Data Mining

Associations are occurrences linked to a single event.

Sequence events are linked over time.
Classification recognizes patterns that describe the group to which an
item belongs by examining existing items that have been classified
and by inferring a set of rules.
Clustering works in a manner similar to classification when no groups
have yet been defined.
Forecasting uses predictions in a different way.

Text Mining tools are now available to help businesses analyze these
data.
Sentiment analysis software is able to mine text comments in an e-mail
message, blog, social media conversation, or survey form to detect favorable
and unfavorable opinions about specific subjects.
Web Mining discovery and analysis of useful patterns, trends, and insights
into a customer behavior.

Databases and the Web

Database server a dedicated computer.

MANAGING DATA RESOURCES

Establishing an information policy
Information policy specifies the organizations rules for sharing,
disseminating, acquiring, standardizing, classifying, and inventorying
information.
Data administration is responsible for the specific policies and
procedures through which data can be managed as an organizational
resource.

Ensuring data quality

Data quality audit which is a structured survey of the accuracy and level
of completeness of the data in an information system.
Data cleansing also known as data scrubbing, consists of activities for
detecting and correcting data in a database that are incorrect, incomplete,
improperly formatted, or redundant.
