Survey Questions:

After the first week of school, I sent out a survey to be answered by staff on
how they felt pre-service week and the first week of school. The administration
wanted feed about how the staff reacted to the professional development and how
prepared they were for the start of the schools. The following are the questions that
were sent to every staff member at Manchester Valley;
1. Which content area do you primarily teach? (E.g. Health and PE, but teachers
2 PE and only 1 Health would write PE)
2. During pre-service week, on a scale 1-5 (1=not at all; 5=fully prepared), how
prepared did you feel for the first week of students?
a. What could have been in place to make you feel more prepared?
3. How did you perceive the Professional Development time during the
preservice week? (optional sessions and sessions on Wednesday afternoon)
4. Name strengths of pre-service week.
5. Name weaknesses of pre-service week.
6. In the upcoming professional development days, what would you like to see
available?
7. On a scale of 1-5 how successful do you feel the first week of school was?
8. Name weaknesses of the first week of school.
9. Name strengths of the first week of school.
10.Any extra thoughts.
I gave the staff members two weeks to complete the survey before I calculated the
results. Out of almost eighty staff members, I only got a response of nineteen
answers.
As I worked through the answers I found the most common answers to base
my results off of. Starting with questions about pre-service week, we had a spilt
between staff members, five of them were fully prepared, four of them were
somewhat prepared, and two of them were just average on being prepared. As
talking in the staff that was an overwhelming result. Many of the teachers felt that
they needed for time in their classrooms to work individually, department time or
more technology professional development. The staff did enjoy the team building
opportunity to get the two schools to combine. They also enjoyed when the school
tour was happening that they brought back beloved staff members for both schools.
Some felt they had ample time to work in the classroom.
Questions about the first week of school, the staff felt that the school was
successful with the students. The strengths were kindness of the staff and students.
Teachers loved the regular schedule for most of the week. The teachers expressed a
weakness was the students had many locker issues that were taking away from
class time. With the combing of two schools, the teachers felt the administration
and the school was not prepared for the amount of students in the building. Overall,
teachers felt that it was a smooth transition with both school combining staff and
students.

The survey was a great part to help administration gain information about
how the staff felt on the first week of school and pre-service week. This will give
staff input on next years set up for pre-service week. There is a level of error in this
survey, since I only got nineteen staff members to answer the survey. The lack of
participation will not be a great representation on our staff. When giving this
information to the administration they are able to see how some staff members
would like to see more. Since this survey was anonymous, I felt that more staff
would participate however with the unexpected situations in the second and third
week of school could have had staff forget about the survey.
