Lesson Plan # 2 and 3 Spanish alphabet

Lesson Overview: I will begin by teaching the Spanish alphabet. We will go letter
by letter, students will write the letters and the sounds they make in notebooks. At
the same time, I will instruct them a sign, using American Sign Language to engage
them. These signs also help to assess informally by having students close their
eyes and show the teacher the sign for the letter they hear. This will cover two class
periods. Only fifteen letters will be taught and rehearsed with students each day.
Resources or Materials Needed
LCD projector and document camera. Students will need paper and writing utensil.
Textbook not yet needed. Laptop and speaker needed for YouTube video.

Performance Objective:
Students will listen and identify the letters of the Spanish alphabet.
Time: 120 minutes (two class periods)
Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activities: Discuss the alphabet in English. How many
letters are there? Discuss that there are four extra letters in the Spanish alphabet.
Emphasize that participation is required as we learn not only the Spanish alphabet
but the signs for the letters in American Sign Language.
Step 2: Content Presentation: Teacher will have students write down each letter
and repeat the sound it makes while showing the sign. Students will also repeat
the letter with the sound and demonstrate the sign for the letter in American Sign
Language. The use of the gestures serves as a connection for those who learn
better physically. In addition the teacher will show a YouTube video of the Spanish
alphabet song located at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsLYD1Jyf3A This will
give students a different presenter, and prior to the end of class students will be
given instructions of how to watch the video outside of class for additional practice.
Step 3: Learner Participation: Every four or five letters we will stop. Students
will show their partners the sign and say the sound for each letter from the
beginning of the alphabet to the stopping point and then trade places. This will
occur several times during the class period. We will also stop and students will
close their eyes. They will show the sign for the letter they hear the teacher say.
We will cover fifteen letters each day. Once the alphabet has been covered,
students will be instructed a chant similar to our alphabet song.
Step 4: Assessment: There will be mostly informal or formative assessment.
Having students close eyes and show the signs allows the teacher to gauge how
many students have a grasp. We will not move on until there are no errors from the
students. We will take a brief listening quiz where students will write down the
letter they hear the teacher say.
Step 5: Follow-Through Activities: The alphabet serves as a foundation for
vocabulary for the entire school year and beyond as students advance with their

Spanish studies. If a student asks how to spell a word, he/she will be given the
spelling using the Spanish alphabet. This will be used daily in most classes. Good
foundation knowledge of the alphabet sounds will serve to help students spell as
they continue learning the language.
