Article D20 Regular Work Year and Non-Instructional Days


D.20.2 School Calendar
a) On or before May 30 th of each school year, a School Calendar for the next school
year shall be drafted by the Superintendent, in consultation with the President of
the Association, and forwarded to the Board, to be established pursuant to
Section 77 of the School Act.
D20.03 Utilization of Non-instructional Days
a) Non-instructional days shall be utilized as follows:
(i)
two (2) Board initiated District-wide professional development days
for activities determined by the Superintendent and the President of
the Association, one of which may be the provincial-wide professional
development day in October.
(ii)
three (3) days for professional development activities determined by
the staff and approved by the Board, one of which may be used for
parent-teacher conferencing.
(iii) one (1) year-end administration day.
School Calendar
Provincial PSA Day

this day may be used as a day in lieu for teachers who attended Personal
Professional Development during the summer or on non-teaching days up to midOctober.
Teachers not attending a Professional Specialist Conference will submit a selfdirected plan to their ProD rep.

Board Initiated District-wide Professional Development Day (2)

The ProD committee, through the ProD chairperson(s), will provide advice to the
NDTA president regarding the Board-initiated District-wide professional
development days.
The ProD chairperson(s) and ProD committee will work with district personnel in
determining the direction.

Three School-Based Days

Schools are encouraged to plan for school-based PD in advance.

Professional development activities should be determined by the school ProD rep in


consultation with their staffs.
ProD reps will share school-based ProD plans for the following year at the June ProD
committee meeting.
Schools will indicate if their school-based activities are open for other teachers or
schools to attend.
In lieu days policies
- Personal Professional Development if you do personal PD during summer or up
to mid-October (on your own time) you are eligible to take the Provincial PD day
in October or one of the two District-based days during the calendar year.
(Teachers not attending a Provincial PD activity must submit a Personal PD plan to
their PD reps for that day)
- School-based PD if 65% or more of your staff decide to do one or two PD days
during the summer the staff members attending may take the one or two school
based days during the school year (all staff must decide what day(s) they will take)
(Staff who cannot or are choosing not to attend the Staff PD in the summer, must
submit personal PD plans to their PD reps for school based days.)
