usedininformationsystemstomaintainaninformationmodelofthedynamicenvironment,e.g.basedonreal

systems.Italsooffersadvancedcoursesthataddressthechallengesofthiscrossdisciplinaryfield,includingbig
dataprocessing,realtimeanalytics,informationquality,andinformationsystemandservicedesign.

WhatisDatascience&Technology?
Servicesareapowerfulabstractionoftechnicalandbusinesssystemsthatfacilitatetheuseofsuchsystems
withoutknowledgeoftheirinternalworkings.Theserviceconceptiswidelyusedforunderstandingand
buildingcomplextechnicalsystemsinmanyareas.
Animportantclassofservicesisthatofinformationsystems.Informationsystemscapture,transmit,store,
retrieveanddisplayinformation.Theysupportprocessesinbusinessorganizationsanddailyactivitiesofhuman
users.Theseinformationsystemsmaycomprisemanysubsystemsthataregeographicallydistributedand
withoutcentralizedcontrol.Assuch,theycanbeconsideredasanetworkoflooselycoupledservices,each
correspondingtoasubsystemandcontributingtosometargetcompositeservice.Informationsystemsintoday's
organizationsdealwithlargevolumesofdata,includingstructureddata,sensordata,multimediadata,and
geographicdata.Managingtheselargevolumes,aggregatingdatafromdifferentsourcesandextractinguseful
informationareincreasinglystrategiccapabilitiesfortheseorganizations.Suchcapabilitieshaveonlybecome

createdeveryhour,minute,secondandmillisecond,ratherthandatathatrequire(laborious)manualannotation
andmanualcleaning.Thesebigdatasetsaretypicallyacquiredbytheunobtrusivemonitoringoflarge
populationsofusersinaneverydaysettingratherthanbymonitoringsmallgroupsofcarefullyselected
subjectsinalaboratorysetting.Dataacquiredbyunobtrusivemonitoringcanbeusedininformationsystemsto
makeavarietyofsmartservicespossible,basedonrealtimedataanalytics,complexeventprocessingand
contextawareprocessadaptation.Themethodologicalchallengesofbigdataanalysisandsmartservicescome
