Core
This course provides students with the fundamental knowledge of fluid mechanics. Fluid
properties, fluid statics, fluid dynamics and kinematics, control volume analysis,
dimensional analysis, modeling and similitude are topics that will be covered.
By the end of this course, students should be able to;
CO1
CO2
CO3

CO4

Identify important fluid properties such as fluid density, specific weight,

specific gravity, viscosity, bulk modulus, speed of sound, vapour pressure and
surface tension to solve problems involving fluids. (C1)
Utilize concepts of hydrostatic pressure distribution, pressure measurement
using manometers and pressure gauges, and solve problems related to
hydrostatic force acting on plane and curve surfaces in a fluid at rest. (C3, P1)
Apply the Bernoulli equation and relate with Newtons second law of motion
to solve fluid flow problems, and demonstrate concepts of fluid kinematics
using velocity and acceleration fields, and flow analysis using a control
volume approach. (C3, CT)
Use the continuity and momentum equations to solve problems of mass ,
volume flowrate and forces involved , and apply dimensional analysis in
modelling and similitude for experimentation of fluid flow model. (C3)
