School has always been big on celebrating its students' accomplishments, including its alumni.
This time, it is the HMHS athletic alumnis time to shine as
HMHS recently announced its
Athletic Hall of Fame class of
2016 inductees. This year, there
are 11 alumni being inducted.
I think what makes our Hall of
Fame so special is the long standing tradition of athletics at
HMHS from both an individual
and team perspective. I want peo-

ple to take away that you can be

an all-star in high school, gain
fame in college and even perform
in the Olympics, and you are always welcome back to the little
town of Haddonfield where it all
started, Jack OMalley, HMHS
Athletic Hall of Fame Committee
president, said.
OMalley said this year there
was an incredible pool of nominees, and it was not easy to chose,
as every candidate was worthy of
consideration. However, a decision had to be made, and the candidates were narrowed down to
the 11 inductees.
At the end of the day, we feel

confident that this class of inductees would stack up favorably

with any in our HMHS Athletic
Hall of Fame's history, and for
that matter against any high
school in South Jersey, OMalley
said.
Those chosen for the HMHS
Hall of Fame this year were Jeff
Cusack (Class of 1979), Rob Kirk
(Class of 1980), Tonia Kemps
Conover (Class of 1992), Abby
George Carey (Class of 1995), Brie
Cokos (Class of 1997), Susie Cook
(Class of 1998), Katherine Conroy
Nicastro (Class of 1998), Michael

Rothamel Bratton Attorneys is
calling all South Jersey residents
to put their extra Halloween
candy to good use for its fifth annual candy drive. From Oct. 29
through Nov. 7, Rothamel Bratton
will accept individually wrapped
candy to be donated to Philadelphia Treats for Troops in the Haddonfield office. Founded in 2006,
Philadelphia Treats for Troops
sends care packages to the men
and women in uniform stationed
overseas. Again this year, we have
an opportunity to help them and
show our appreciation for the
armed services, and we cant

think of a better way to recycle all

that unwanted candy.
Anyone can participate. Simply drop in the Haddonfield office
at 18 Kings Highway West and
look for the box labeled Candy
For Troops in the lobby. Drop off
by Nov. 7. Feel free to include a
much appreciated letter or handmade card for a soldier to read.
Rothamel Bratton will have note
cards next to the box if you wish
to write a note onsite.
For more information, call our
marketing coordinator at (856)

in our opinion

Safety first this Halloween

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033

Parents, kids, homeowners and motorists should follow these tips

Richard Donnelly

hosts, goblins, ghouls and a lot

of superheroes, princesses,
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
and characters from Frozen will be
parading up and down streets in town
in less than one week. Halloween is an
exciting time for kids, parents and
neighbors alike.
Its a time for fun, a time for laughter, a time for adorable pictures, a time
for candy, a time for celebration and a
time when we all need to pay attention
to safety.
First and foremost, motorists need
to be extra cautious when driving
through the streets that day, not just in
your own neighborhood, but surrounding ones, as well. Make sure to
be aware of trick-or-treating hours,
and be especially careful when darkness settles in. Be especially alert in

Halloween photos
While youre out trick-or-treating this
Halloween, or attending a local
Halloween parade, dont forget about
The Sun! Wed love to print photos of
you enjoying the holiday. Send them to
us via e-mail, to the address at the right.

residential neighborhoods, as kids

tend to run excitedly from house to
house.
Parents should be on high alert that
day as well, reminding their kids to
look both ways before crossing the
street and cross only at intersections
and crosswalks, when possible.
If kids are trick-or-treating without
adult supervision, make sure they
know the route so they dont get lost
and confused. Other safety tips, courtesy of the website, www.safekids.org:
Decorate costumes and bags with

reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors.

Choose face paint and makeup
whenever possible instead of masks,
which can obstruct a childs vision.
Have kids carry glow sticks or
flashlights to help them see and be
seen by drivers.
When selecting a costume, make
sure it is the right size to prevent trips
and falls.
If you need more tips or tricks of
the trade for trick-or-treating, visit
www.safekids.org.
The local police department will
have safety recommendations, and the
municipality will also have more information about specific rules and regulations for the day.
Be safe this Halloween. And most
importantly, have a scary good time!

in the mile run for three decades. He
also anchored the four-mile relay
team that was a fraction of a second
off the national record.
Glenn Foley set a South Jersey
record for passing yards and touchdown passes as quarterback at Cherry
Hill East. He went on to lead the Boston College Eagles in an upset over
Notre Dame and was drafted by the
New York Jets.

Mike Glavin racked

up some impressive

sociation because it helped me to
stay informed. Now I feel more
like I am a part of the scientific
community, not just an observer,
Kidd said. I think all science
teachers can look at the recognition that the AAAS is providing
for teachers to help remind us of
the important work we do as educators to advance science through
teaching.
Kidd has a bachelors of science degree in science education
from Temple University and recently earned a masters degree
in environmental engineering
from Drexel University. He is dual
certified to teach both mathematics and physics in Pennsylvania
and New Jersey.
He
teaches
algebra-based
physics, AP physics C: classical
mechanics and electricity and
magnetism, forensic science, and
intro to engineering at Haddonfield Memorial High School.
At Haddonfield I have expanded the AP Physics offering to include Electricity and Magnetism
and, with the support and encouragement of the principal and superintendent, created a new project-based class in engineering.
Since I was developing an engineering curriculum, I felt that it
was my professional responsibility to have a degree in engineering

I have always had great respect for the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Being a member of this association is one way I feel connected to the scientific community, so I feel honored to be selected
by the AAAS as Teacher of the

The world's largest multidisciplinary scientific society and a

the world faces today. Kidd is a

so I enrolled at Drexel, Kidd said.

Kidd is also an adjunct professor who teaches physics at Rowan
College at Burlington County.
Professor Kidd is an excellent
example of the type of high-quality educators that make Rowan
College at Burlington County one
of the best community colleges in
the nation, said Freeholder
Mary Ann OBrien. Burlington
County has many tremendous educators, and its great when one
earns recognition for their outstanding contributions.
Originally working in the entertainment industry, Kidd made
the choice to switch careers and
said it was the best decision he
ever made. Kidd began teaching
in early 2010 and, having his eye
on HMHS, he was hired at the
high school in October of that
year.
Kidd is inspired by his students and is always looking for
new ways to demonstrate concepts that engage them. In
physics, he develops labs that provide students with hands-on experience, but allows them the opportunity to determine their own
procedures for data collection. In
engineering, students work on
projects and discover through research and multiple trials how to
optimize their project to accomplish their goals.
Having this approach allows
much more variety and many creative approaches to problem solving. Every students project is different, Kidd said.
Kidd hopes his students gain
self-confidence in themselves and
their work, and an understanding
that it is only hard to solve a problem until you learn how to do it.
Just like how his students inspire
him, Kidd hopes his teaching inspires his students.

Miller (Class of 1998), Sean

Kemps (Class of 1998), Jessica
Nixon (posthumously Class of
1999) and Erin Donohue (Class of
2001).
Donohue is one of the most
decorated all-around athletes in
HMHS history, excelling in crosscountry, track and field, and basketball. She established herself to
be one of the top female athletes
for cross-country in New Jersey
high school history. She was a 33time state champion, earning
nine Meet of Champions, and
was named New Jersey Female
Athlete of the Year in 2001. After
graduating college in 2005, Donohue accepted an internship with
Nikes In-Store Communications
department and continued to
train around the Nike campus in
Beaverton, Ore. By the beginning
of 2006, she was training full-time
and competing as a professional.
She qualified for the Olympics in
2008 and for the 2016 U.S. Olympic
Trials.
Miller was a three-sport athlete
at HMHS, excelling in football,
wrestling and baseball. On the
mat, Miller earned four varsity
letters and recorded more than 50
wins. He went on to earn three
letters in football at the College of
Holy Cross. Miller returned to his
alma mater where he currently
teaches history, is the head coach
of the wrestling program and is
an assistant coach for both football and baseball and has been a
key contributor to multiple Colonial Conference, sectional and
state championship teams.
Nicastro was a four-year standout in swimming at HMHS. She
won numerous New Jersey AllGroup State and South Jersey
Sectional Championships, set 13
Sectional records in 16 events
over four years, and her record
for both the 200 Individual Medley and 100 Backstroke still stand
today. Nicastro was named the
Most Valuable Swimmer at
Princeton and was a 10-time First

five swimmers
to win the

four years at

meet, and she qualified to participate in the 2000 Olympic trials.
Nixon was known for field
hockey skills, Kirk for soccer and
Conover for cross-country. Carey
was an amazing achiever in soccer and basketball, Cokos too,
both scoring more than 1,000
points in basketball. In soccer,
Cook holds the school records for
career goals, goals in a season,
and goals in a single game. Kemps
was the recipient of nine varsity
letters at HMHS, four in soccer,
two in winter track, and three in
baseball, and helped his teams
win multiple championships.

I think the history and suc-

cess of HMHS athletics in our

town gives our children a standard associated with not just success, but also the basic concept of
competing and inclusion. We
make a very concerted effort to
connect our town's youth programs to the high school teams;
not everyone is going to be a
champion or a superstar...but
everyone can experience the feeling of being part of a team and
working together toward a common goal, OMalley said.
The HMHS Hall of Fame Induction Dinner and Ceremony
will be held on Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. at
Tavistock County Club, located at

The cost is $50 per person. RSVPs
are asked by Nov. 8. To RSVP or
