S UMMARY
I would like to start by stating that I do not want to limit myself when applying for a
mentorship this term and I am open to the idea of working within both small and large
organizations. It would be preferred to gain hands-on experience and I understand that a
small organization would be best for that. As a level 3 Human Resource student, I am
currently interested in working within financial institutions, such as banks, or in the Health
Care sector, including animal-related health care.

Mission Statement
At the City of London, our mission is to be "At Your Service a respected and
inspired public service partner, building a better city for all" which means that
everything we do is focused on achieving the results that matter to our community.
(City of London, 2016)
Research
Employees are offered competitive salaries and comprehensive group health benefits
and pension plans. The City of London is a vivid supporter of diversity and applies that
into their recruitment. They were recently featured in an Employer Success Story for
the progressive stance they have with the Ability First Coalition various volunteers
supporting the issues of disability in the Londons workforce. On job hiring
advertisements they always outline that any applicant is welcome, even those who
may require accommodations. I personally admire that the City of London includes
attractive employee benefits such as flexible work scheduling, employee recognition
programs, educational reimbursement and social committee activities. (AbilityFirst,
2016) (City of London, 2016)

Toronto Dominion Bank (TD) 1ST CHOICE

Now Serving London, Ontario with more than 15 locations
Mission Statement

We will be the Best Run, Customer-focused, Integrated Financial Institution

with a Unique and Inclusive Employee Culture. Our vision is to be the better bank.
(TD Bank, 2016)
Research
The Toronto Dominion bank formed as a single branch in 1855 by a group of millers
and merchants. For the past 150 years, TD transpired into a worldwide corporation
honorably committed to diversity and has been named a Top Employer on Canadas
Top 100 list and also recognized as one of Canadas Best Diversity Employers.
The TD Bank Group is very involved with communities. They invite employees to
contribute in selecting charities and compensate staff when they use their time
volunteering. Just in Canada, this organization supports more than 2,300
charitable/community associations.
I have been banking with TD for about 6 years now and have many friends who work
with the company. I get told how dedicated they are to your future. As for personal
experience, TD staff is committed, works well, and has always been informative and
taken care of my personal financial needs. Most importantly, this company has been
extremely prosperous and is continuing to be and that is exactly why a career with TD
is right for me. (Canada's Top Employers, 2016) (TD Bank, 2016)

London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) 2ND CHOICE

Includes: Victoria Hospital and Childrens Hospital, University Hospital
London, Ontario

Mission Statement
An academic hospital, committed to improving health and delivering value for
citizens of London, the South West Region and beyond. Building on our tradition of
leadership, stewardship and partnership, we champion patient-centered care, with a
spirit of inquiry and discovery, and a commitment to life-long learning. (London
Health Sciences Centre, 2016)
Research
LHSC is one of the largest employers in our region, providing work for almost 15,000
individuals. One characteristic I really liked was that they pay tribute to employees
who have reached milestone years of service (starting at 10 years and every 5 years
thereafter). With this kind of incentive, it is no surprise about 49% of the LHSC staff
has been with the hospital for 20 years or longer.
LHSC is impressively dedicated to innovation and discovery within their hospitals. As a
person who regularly donates toward the research of MS, this is something that aligns
closely to my values. I like to hear that hospitals are also putting their resources
towards uncovering advanced, curative methods for untreatable conditions. The
contribution of HR at hospitals is part of a really big picture. This industry is
significant to me because managing its human resources doesnt only provide
benefits to the organization, but also to the welfare of our residents. HR is responsible
for providing citizens with access to an effective and capable hospital staff that can
take care of each patients individual needs, now and in the future. (London Health
Sciences Centre, 2016)

Not as personal. With larger volumes of staff,

knowing the distinct needs of 15,000
different employees will be hard.
Out of town, as I am commuting from St.
Thomas, but perfectly doable.
Paying for parking.
Since this is a large business, Im assuming
there would be less hands-on work for me.
Working in a very chaotic, busy place.
