Sketchbook Assignments

One sketchbook drawing is DUE every Thursday.

*Sketchbooks handed in late will be accepted but points will be removed for lateness.
Criteria:

Drawings should fill the ENTIRE sketchbook page (points will be

deducted for small drawings.)
Include DETAILS (include textures & value, unless otherwise specified.)
DRAWINGS NEEDS TO BE FROM DIRECT OBSERVATION ie: you LOOKING
at the objects! That means NOT from memory, photos, or imagination.
(except where otherwise noted). Pay close attention to proportions (size
relationships)

Also, feel free to do your own sketches and writing in here (just remember I will see it). Make sure to number and
date your assignments on the bottom of the page.

1. Draw a collection (still life) of everyday objects: bathroom things, kitchen

things, art tools, etc.
2. Expressive line drawing. Try all types of lines: wavy, curly, jagged, dashes,
fat, thin, etc, and create an image with them.
3. Design a cartoon strip or present a day in your life in 4 frames or more.
4. Find a leaf and draw it in detail.
5. Draw several studies of your hands and feet. Fill the page.
6. Free Choice: whatever you want, but make sure it meets the criteria above.
7. Draw another classmate using the blind contour method. Use pencil. Be sure
to show thick and thin lines (that is what contour drawing is, and it doesnt
need shading).
8. Fill a page with one feature (eyes, noses, mouths, ears). Be looking in a mirror
or at someone else while you are doing this.
9. Draw the tools of a specific profession. I should be able to see the connection
of the profession to the tool. Include which profession it is on the back of the
assignment.
10.Draw a lifelike animal (of your choice) in its natural surroundings. (Maybe a
pet in their cage or bed? From life is the best)

11.Create a totally abstract drawing. It must fill the page and include detail and
texture.
12.Find an interesting piece of wood or rock and draw it. Make sure you draw all
the details, including texture and shading.
13.Pick a location in the school and draw what you see. This is an observation
drawing that may include your knowledge of perspective.
14.Draw a tree in detail. Use color if you choose.
15.Draw bottles and cans, some of the items should be crushed or crumpled.
16.Draw furniture in your home. This should be a close-up that includes the
texture of the surface and value. Fill the page so that it goes off the edges.
17.Copy a photograph as exactly as you can (photorealism). Use color if
necessary, and remember the background(Use a photo you took, or of you)
If there are any sketchbook assignments you would like to change or add, just talk
to me.
~A sketchbook can be used to honor and develop your own creativity. Keeping a
visual diary is a chance to see your thoughts on paper, and to reflect back on them
over time. A sketchbook is a personal creative resource as well as a place to
practice drawing skills for this class. I want this book to become something that has
meaning for you~
Today you can browse through the travel sketchbooks of famous artists like William
Turner sitting comfortably at your desk at home. Also, thousands of contemporary
sketchbooks of living artists and amateurs are spread out on the internet. Keeping
and publishing a sketchbook gets more and more popular. A perfect example is the
emergence of the Urban Sketchers a Meta-Blog of sketchers all over the world.
