Heat Flux Sensor MCT

Micro Thermocouples for High Frequency Measurements

Adaptable to any Surface Shapes

Typical Applications
This heat flux thermocouple is designed for measurements of high frequency surface temperature
changes within the first 40-100 ms during hypersonic wind tunnel experiments.
From the surface temperature signal the convective heat flux is deduced. The probe has to be seen
as a half infinite body. The sensor measures the model surface temperature change until the
sensor end starts warming up. With the knowledge of the caloric data of the sensor the heat flux
can be calculated. Here the new program Heat Flux Calculator helps a lot to calculate the heat flux
by using the temperature data.
The probe is small enough for mounting in the wing tip and can be shape adapted to the surface by
grinding. Alternatively the conjunction can be reached by a vacuum disposition of a metal coating,
but with the disadvantage of a fixed geometry.

The application of this heat flux thermocouple is not only limited to wind tunnel investigations, it
can be used for all cases where fast surface temperature changes occur. With its fast response
time (only some s) it can be used in engines, jet turbine engines, explosion chamber etc. without
disturbance of stream. This coaxial thermocouple has demonstrated its reliability and durability in
multiple experiments in Germany and worldwide.
In cases of very high temperatures the surface will oxidise and lead to signal loss. A new grinding
with sand paper renovates the probe for nearly unlimited lifetime. Durability for type E without
renovation: 35 min at 615C and 8 min. by 715C. For much longer durability use the metal coated
version.
