Happy Halloweekend!
By Katie McFadden

Halloween may fall on a Monday this year, but the weekend leading up to it will be jam
packed with fun-filled haunts
and jaunts. From tricks and
treats for the kids to costume
contests and cocktails for the
kids at heart, theres plenty of
fun going on around town.
Embrace the crisp fall air at
some of the biggest outdoor
events this weekend. Beach
116th Street will be the hotspot
for fall fun at its Halloween
Block Party on Saturday, October 29. This full day of activity
takes place from noon to 7 p.m.
on the beach block. There will
be live music throughout the
day with local favorites like The
BEasy Band, Nimbus Knight, Arson Welles, Blac Rabbit, Rattrap
Bumpkin, acoustic Indaculture
and more. Make sure to bring
your wallet! In addition to the
local businesses on the block,
there will be an artisan market
featuring local vendors like Zingara Vintage, Rockaway Cottage,

Polly & Esther, crochet Creations

by Joanne, Always A Celebration
Creation holiday dcor, Rockaway Gypsea jewelry, Rockaway
Park Embroidery, Pure Body
Scrubs, End of the A, baked
goods by Fat Cardinal Bakery
and much more. At noon, Hot
Yoga Rockaway Beach will be
leading a beach yoga class.

Costumes are not necessary

but encouraged as there will be
plenty of perks for those who get
in the spirit. The costume parade starts at 1 p.m. and at 1:30
p.m., there will be a costume
contest for pets, sponsored by
Rockapup, and a kids costume
contest, sponsored by Lola Star
and Blue Bungalow. Follow-

ing the contests, from 2 p.m.

to 4 p.m., kids will get to trickor-treat at participating local
businesses along the block. At 3
p.m., take a break and burn off
some of that candy with a kids
dance party hosted by JUMP
Dance Studio. At 4:30 p.m.,
kids will have an opportunity to paint pumpkins donated
by Lisena Garden Center, with
some instruction provided by
Rockaway Art Attack. The children dont get to have all the
fun. Stop by the Haunted Tiki
Lounge where you can get a
witches brew from Rockaway
Brewing Company or Coney
Island Brewing Company. The
lounge will also have a DJ and
activities. You can also warm
up with some free hot apple cider at Local Liquids.
There will also be some action on the water on Saturday,
October 29. Locals Surf School

Disaster Capitalism

Im in Ireland enjoying the

food and the weather, while
exchanging texts with my son
whos standing just a few feet
away. Im hip. Why talk when
you can text? Anyway, things
are grand. Though I cant understand half the words the
people are saying, for fooks
sake.
And though Im across the
pond I cant forget that its
the week of the anniversary of
that weather event we had four
years ago. Many people have
put the storm behind them
while some cant escape because theyre still ensnared in
Build It Back.
The City says look at the
bright side. Compared to New
Orleans after Katrina, Build it
Back looks good. People in the

Big Easy have been waiting for

rebuilt homes for eleven years.
Four years is nothing. And the
Mayor can say (so far), at least
Im not in jail like former Ray
Nagin, the New Orleans mayor,
now doing a stretch in federal
prison for bribery and corruption.
The City says it needs $500
million to finish its wonderful
Build It Back program (after
wasting hundreds of millions
already). A mulligan is a doover. Wouldnt it be great to
have a CDBG grant mulligan?
The Fed program, CDBG, funded Build It Back. Lets have a
do-over and just have every
household get a check instead,
straight from the Feds.
Seriously.
Some
people
wouldve taken the money and
gone straight to the racetrack.
Some people wouldve taken the money and gone on a
cruise. But even if some people
did that theres no way it would
match the waste and corruption that sprung from the federal spigot.

Remember the Parks Department was given an extra $200

million for the boardwalk? Im
not sure what happened to that
(other than overpaying the
contractor to finish on time).
I seem to remember something called New York Rising
and how Rockaway would be
in line for some $60 million.
Committees were formed,
meetings were held. I think
some nice brochures were produced.
Thats not to mention the
$100 million spent on lifeguard
shacks and bathrooms.
Thats $360 million wasted
without me even thinking.
Checks straight to people
seems foolish but when you
consider whats been done
youve gotta ask if letting the
government waste it and letting consultants grow rich is
better. It sounds crazy to suggest people shouldve just been
given straight out cash but why
is that any crazier than giving
it to thieving companies and
contractors?

Why does it cost more to repair a house than build a brand

new one? Corruption. Fraud.
Theft. Uh-oh, Im starting to
sound like Im on a campaign,
god forbid. If people were given cash they couldve fixed
their houses and hired the
people they wanted. Or they
couldve started fresh somewhere else.
If every person including children in a household
were just given a check, Sandy
would really be in the rearview
mirror. Im talking checks to
everyone. If you lived in the
projects heres a check for you
and your kids. You can move
out, find a nice place to live.
Somewhere out of the flood
zone. Family of four and your
first floor was flooded? Well,
heres a check. That should
help you rebuild something
nice.
Wait, just have a government
handout?! No, we cant have
that. Its so much better when
its stolen and wasted by officials instead.

BC American Legion Halloween

By Dan Guarino
A cowgirl, a dinosaur and the
twins from the Shining walk into

an American Legion Hall

Thats no joke. Its the Broad
Channel American Legion
Auxiliary Halloween Party that

brought a few hundred costumed partygoers out on Saturday night, October 22.
The 4th annual All Hallows
Eve fest in BC featured drinks,
hot pasta dinner, laughs, raffles,
dancing and music by DJs@
Work. All proceeds go to supporting American Legion Post
1404s programs for veterans.
A scan of the dance floor
found such characters as a
nimble scarecrow, assorted
superheroes, a leprechaun

rider, the Skellingtons, painter Bob Ross and curvy Fall

Foliage and more. There were
also group costume concepts like an Orange Is The
New Black quartet, a bevy of
Wheres Waldo's and a mad
hatters hat full of Alice in
Wonderland inhabitants.
And the aforementioned
bronco riding cowgirl, dancing dinosaur and sweet and
sinister twins? They all each
won prizes for best costumes!

Haunted Firehouse? Halloween Kids Parade? Oh My!

By Dan Guarino

The cauldron is bubbling over

at the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department at 15 Noel
Road, as the Volies get ready to
stir up some Halloween fun.
According to Chief Dan
McIntyre, the BCVFD Halloween Haunted Firehouse will be
ready to open its clammy doors
to visitors from Friday, October
28, through Halloween Night,

Monday October 31.

Whoa! Its amazing what
they did in there! one who
went through it last year said.
Scary!
The fun starts at 6:30 p.m.
each night. Entrance is $10 per
person. Proceeds go to support
the BCVFD. Those 13 and under must be accompanied by
an adult. This event is a lot of
fun and we are planning for a
bigger turnout than last year,

McIntyre noted.
The younger set shouldnt be
afraid of being left out though.
There will be a free kid friendly version of the Haunted Firehouse on Sunday afternoon,
October 30.
The doors will open as part of
the fun after the Dawn McIntyre
Annual Childrens Halloween
Parade. The yearly event draws
hundreds of cleverly costumed
children and their families.

The parade will kick off about

12 noon on Sunday. Participants will gather at 17 Road
Park off Cross Bay Boulevard.
They will march along the
Boulevard from the park to the
firehouse in a procession that
often stretches for blocks.
Afterwards goodies will be
served up by Broad Channels
volunteer firefighters.
All are invited to join in and
scare up some Halloween fun!

The Idea Guys

Play That Music, Baby!

By RT Pepperwinkle

I'm giving you two ideas this week. Now the thing
about ideas, so it's hard to
have a truly original one, so
rather than try to claim these
as my own, I'm just stealing a
couple of good ones that you
should run to market with.
As far as I can see, nobodys
doing these yet.
Want to turn your child
into a music prodigy? Well,
first thing you should do is
give the little Mozart a baby
bottle shaped like a musical instrument. Basically,
the base of the bottle would
be round and wide and the
sides of the bottle would
have keys so that when the
baby took a drink it would
look like was playing the
trombone.
Think about it, baby bottles
have basically been the same

since Ben Franklin or Betty

Crocker invented it. Why not
design the bottle with a little
musical creativity? People
are always buying baby stuff.
And it's not like bottles are
hand-me-downs. People buy
new ones for every crying
baby that comes along. And,
of course, these musical containers would be a hit at any
baby shower.
So, get out there and design your baby boppin bottles and watch your cash register sing.
Oh shoot, Ive run out of
room so I cant give you my
second idea until next time.
Itd be a good idea if the editor gave us more than 250
words for these ideas that
will make you rich!
Got an idea you wont do
anything with and want
to share? Send an email to
Mail@RockawayTimes.com

Foliage By Sea
By Katie McFadden

Why not take a boat ride this autumn? American Princess Cruises
is approaching the tail end of the
whale watching season, but the water is still bubbling with activity as the
humpbacks start to migrate, and this
weekend, the American Princess is
offering an adventure up the Hudson
River to give guests a unique view of
the breathtaking fall foliage.
On Saturday, October 29, the
American Princess will leave Riis
Landing and embark on a picture
perfect trip to see the orange, reds
and yellows of the autumn trees reflect off the blues and greens of the
water. Guests start to board at 9:30
a.m. and the boat departs at 10 a.m.
for a trip past Coney Island, around
Nortons Point, under the Verrazano Bridge into New York Harbor and up the Hudson River to the
Tappan Zee Bridge area. Lady Liberty will also make an appearance
before the boat returns to Rockaway around 4 p.m. Guests will
dine well on this brunch cruise that
includes bagels, croissants, cakes,
muffins, danish, cream cheeses,

butter, jelly, coffee, tea and juice for

breakfast, plus gourmet sandwiches, potato, macaroni, cole slaw and
fruit salads, pickle and olive platters
and soft drinks for lunch. Theres
also a cash bar for those who want
to indulge in a morning mimosa or
afternoon wine or brew.
Weve doing this for about nine
years and its one of my favorite
trips of the year, Captain Tom Paladino said. The foliage has been
great over the last week and every
October that weve done this and
I dont see it being any different
this year. Its a nice, calm, relaxing,
beautiful time. Tickets are $75 for
adults or $50 for kids under 12,
and can be purchased or reserved

season. Now migration has started and the whales have started to
come down from New England
and they pass right off Rockaway.
On Friday we saw five whales off
the beach and on Saturday we saw
three whales. Theyve been very
close to the shore, maybe less than
a mile off the beach, Paladino said
of recent trips. He says the whales
have been putting on quite a show
as they feed on bunker and lunge
out of the water.
Whale watching trips will continue each Saturday and Sunday
through November 13, but the

season could continue on. If they

stick around, well extend it further. The shows have been so great,
it would be crazy to give it up,
he said. Over the years, hes noticed that the season keeps getting
longer. Were starting earlier and
extending it later each year and it
seems to get better and better. We
usually start Memorial Day weekend but this year we started on May
15 because there were sightings.
Last year we ran until the first week
of November and now were going
to the second week of November.
Rockaway is the new Cape Cod for
whale watching, Paladino said.

Four Years Later: Build it Back Horror

By Katie McFadden

Four years in, its easy to put

Hurricane Sandy in the past.
Most of the homes, even those
that burned down, have been rebuilt. Old businesses have been
back up and running and new
ones have since popped up. This
year we finally saw the return of
a boardwalk, from Beach 9th to
Beach 126th. Sandy, who? For
many, the storm is just a bad
memory at this point. Yet for
others, its still an ongoing nightmare, especially for those who
still arent home or are holding on
to hope through the citys Build it
Back program.
I just want to get back into
my home before I die, Arverne
resident Selma Erey said. I was
among the first people to apply
for Build it Back. They told me I
couldnt apply until I completed
construction on my home because it was so badly damaged,
75-year-old Erey said. She says
she spent about $250,000 worth
of insurance and out-of-pocket
costs to repair her home right on
the bay near Beach 69th Street.
She then reached out to BiB in
hopes that they would repair the
bulkhead that no longer protected her home from the bay, but
was told they would only help
her with her home. They told me
that they needed to demolish my
home and build a new one 14feet higher. I asked if they could
just elevate it because I already
finished it and they said it wasnt
possible because it would cost
too much, Erey said.
Despite her home being repaired, Erey took Build it Back up
on their offer. If I didnt let them
do it, my insurance would have
gone up at an incredible rate and I
wouldnt have been able to afford
it, so I would have been out of my
home anyway. I had to bite the
bullet because there was no other choice, she said. She signed
an agreement in December 2014.
Working with the city contractor,
Arverne By The Sea, Erey went
through the design of her new
home about 12 times before she
agreed to something that was
satisfactory. In January 2016, she
was told to vacate so work could
begin. She quickly rented a place
nearby and placed her belongings in storage. Her home wasnt

demolished until July, with construction starting in August. I

was out of my house for seven
months while paying rent, bills,
storage costs, a mortgage, plus
taxes on my home that didnt exist, she said. The city reimbursed
Erey for her rent costs and some
of her storage costs, but they
capped the storage reimbursement. Ive reached the $15,000
maximum and construction is
still ongoing. Im a person of limited means and this is making my
life very miserable, she said. For
Erey, there is some hope. They
said, hopefully, construction will
be complete by Christmas, but it
will take time to get the Certificate
of Occupancy, and until I have
that, I wont be able to move in,
she said, October 29 will be four
years since the storm and I dont
know when I will be back.
Next door, Deborah Star Reed
has faced her own challenges.
I put $80,000 of my own money
into the home before BiB got back
to me. At first they recommended
that my home be elevated, she
said. After working for a year and
a half to try to find someone to
elevate her concrete home, BiB
turned around and told her that
it would be too costly, and that
her home would have to be rebuilt instead. I get scared every
time a storm comes through and
I know my insurance is going to
go through the roof, so I had to do
it or I wouldnt be able to afford to
live here. I have to go through the
rebuild, even though I put all this
money into my house already.
I cant afford to lift my house on

my own and I cant find anyone

to do it, so I need the citys help,
Reed said. After being assigned
Tishman as her contractor, Reed
asked to see some examples of
their BiB work. I said, can you
tell me where I can visit a home
that Tishman has built and they
couldnt. They havent done one
yet, she said. Reed was told that
she couldnt switch contractors,
because its too late. Its not
my fault that they held me up and
had my case sitting on a desk for
more than a year because they
couldnt decide if my house was
going to be an elevation or rebuild, she said. Having no other
choice, Reed has proceeded with
Tishman. Going through the design process, shes found that the
home shell be receiving is not
near the quality of her current
home. This is a minimum standards program. Theyre going to
build a house that is less than
what I have, she said. However
Reed is out of options. Ive been
playing this waiting game and I
dont have any other help, but its
not fair. Were good people and
we deserve better, she said.
Stacey Walshs family has
been out of their Broad Channel
home since Sandy. Walsh knew
her home above the canal was
so badly damaged, that it would
need to be demolished, which
was confirmed by her insurance
company and FEMA, yet BiB
told her she only needed an elevation and repair and was told to
start repairs herself. After putting
$65,000 into the home, Walsh
found that it was for nothing. A

final decision isnt made until

after you have a design consultation. They waste all this money
preparing you for one pathway
and right before a decision is
made, they change it. On the day
of the final inspection for the elevation and rebuild, they came
back and said the house needed
to be knocked down, Walsh said.
That was last September, more
than two years after she applied
to the program. After the storm,
Walsh had a near-death car accident in which her family was told
she had a two percent chance of
survival. Walsh survived the accident, but medical expenses have
added to her financial burden.
Falling behind on mortgage payments as she pays rent to live on
Long Island, Walsh faced a near
foreclosure, which also set her
back in the process. In July, she
was told she was being kicked
out of the BiB program because
her contractor failed to meet a
deadline. She had to appeal and
was reinstated in September and
finally approved a design plan
last week, but her dreams of being home are distant. Were nowhere near any type of closure.
They said it might take 18 months
before I have a house and even
that I dont believe. I have no faith
in the Build it Back system but
Im at their mercy because I have
no other options. Itll be six years
since the storm by the time Im
home.
Sophia Vailakis-De Virgilios
family is stuck in the waiting game
of the choose your own contractor route for BiB. This comes after initially attempting to make
repairs on their Broad Channel
house and getting scammed and
overcharged by a contractor. The
city had green tagged the home,
saying it was substantially safe,
yet three engineers determined
the house needed to be demolished. Without a permit from
the city, her new contractor tore
down the home, which De Virgilio was later fined for. Now shes
waiting on permits through BiB
to begin construction as her family pays rent to live a few houses
down and storage for the building
materials for their log home, since
they purchased them in 2014.
Any day now, is what they keep

saying, she said. Yet De Virgilio

doesnt place total blame on the
City. There is so much bureaucracy that goes on. Its this whole
perfect storm of the buildings
department, insurance, FEMA,
BiB and everything else. There are
many parts that have contributed
to this disaster after the disaster.
Some have tried to fight back at
the troublesome program. Matt
Peres of Breezy Point hoped to
utilize the program to elevate
his home, yet has found himself
questioning the high costs for
items that they insist he have,
but he doesnt want, such as
sprinkler systems, a new boiler,
demolition of his chimney and
more. He has found proof that
the city can grant exceptions for
some of the requirements that
they insist are necessary, which
could save the program millions
and he has sent letters to the program, HUD, and other officials
and agencies, questioning some
of the requirements. The city
has ignored his questions since
October 2015. Im not signing
anything until they answer my
questions. I dont know if Im
kicked out of the program or not
at this point. The city has ways
to avoid these extra costs, especially for people that dont want
these things. Theyre wasting all
this money and Im not going to
be complicit with that because
its criminal, Peres said. Belle
Harbor resident Linda Spadaro
has also questioned some of the

The Rockaway Times

unnecessary work. Spadaro initially utilized insurance and an
SBA loan to repair the first floor
of her home. By the time BiB got
to her, they deemed her house an
elevation job, which Spadaro refused. Were not looking for elevation, its not necessary. All she
wants is to repair the second floor
of the home, which faces ceiling
damage due to water entering the
rafters. Spadaro received a letter
in May telling her to schedule an
options review meeting, which
she responded to, only to receive
a letter later that month telling
her that she had been removed
from the program, saying she
had been unresponsive. Shes
still fighting to have her case reopened. I just want to finish the
work that has to be done, but BiB
doesnt work.
Another Broad Channel resident, who chose to remain anonymous, got so fed up after two
years of dealing with BiB that they
removed themselves from the
program. Our small house was
demolished in May 2014 and we
were going to pay out of pocket
to make it bigger. We worked out
a price for additional square footage, which came out to $75,000,
but BiB Director Amy Peterson
said we had to pay an additional
$212,000. We decided to withdraw, the resident said. Now
working with a private architect,
the family is still waiting on permits from the City since January.
The whole thing disgusts me,
she said. No one wouldve expected it to be like this four years
later.

Can you feel it? Something is

in the air all around Broad Channel these days. You can almost
sense a palpable feeling of intense anticipation as the big day
nears! All around town you find
groups of people gathered on
the street and in neighborhood
establishments talking among
themselves about the approaching event!
No, the big event I am referring to has nothing to do with
the upcoming Presidential election. The big event in question
here is the fast approaching one
week cruise that will carry my-

self, Grace and my oldest daughter Amy along with 70 other denizens of Broad Channel to the
Bahamas and several other ports
of call.
On the morning of Sunday,
October 30, we will assemble at
the Broad Channel VFW for bagels and Bloody Mary's and then
board buses which will whisk
all of us over to the piers on the
west side of Manhattan to board
the week's cruise which includes
a complete meal and drink
package which, at the very least,
should ensure a very interesting
seven days at sea. Personally, I
will be bringing a copy of Mary
Dady Clarity's book, Old Salt, a
memoir of her husband, Mike
Clarity's life growing up in Broad
Channel through his years of
service with the Navy. Assuming
no untoward incidents on board
the ship or ashore on foreign soil
involving Homeland Security or
confiscated passports, we should
all safely return via bus to the
VFW the following Sunday for a
small welcome back soiree and
then home for a much needed
rest to make sure we are in shape
to head on down to P.S. 47 Tues-

day to vote in the general election.

The lucky residents of Broad
Channel enjoying this cruise
are not the only ones out of the
country this week as our very
own word-meister and editor
in chief Kevin Boyle is traveling
abroad to Portugal and then on
to Ireland. I expressed my concern to Kevin that he might run
into a problem with Homeland
Security should they examine his
passport a little too closely and
determine that he obtained it
while drinking around the countries of the world at Disney's Epcot. Kevin assured me that his
passport is, in fact, valid and that
he, "would not be caught dead in
Disney." I told Kevin that his reply could lead me to infer that he
views Disney with some degree
of disdain. For instance, I would
never be caught dead attending a
midnight showing of "The Best of
Anthony Weiner's Carlos Danger
Twitter Pics"....but that doesn't
mean I didn't attend the showing, front row and all! Just wasn't
dead or seen attending!
With all the hullabaloo surrounding the pending closure

of Playland Motel and our Mayor's intention of turning it into a
homeless shelter, what follows
was almost inevitable! Several
gentlemen were recently talking
among themselves while seated at Ruffle Bar enjoying that
most sacrosanct of late afternoon events, happy hour, when
the phone rang. Lauren, tender
of the bar, answered and after
listening intently for a few seconds, simply nodded and said,
"OK, I will tell him" and hung
up. She looked down the bar at
the group of men and in a loud
voice announced to all at the bar,
"Hey [name withheld to protect
the (not so?) innocent], that was
your wife and she knows you are
here. She said if you're not home
in 10 minutes she is going to pack
all your clothes and send them to
Playland cause your butt is gonna be homeless in 11 minutes!"
With the opportunity for an Irish
Goodbye now completely out of
the question, the gentleman in
question settled his tab, vacated
his stool and was out the door 30
seconds later.

Pheffer Amato:
Fix All Bay Bulkheads
By Dan Guarino
"Our storm protections are
only as strong as the weakest
link," Stacey Pheffer Amato,
candidate for NY State Assembly, stated on Wednesday, October 26.
She called on the City to review current conditions of privately-owned bulkheads and
seawalls along Jamaica Bay in a
letter to the NYC Economic Development Corporation (EDC),
also urging them to consider
implementing a tax abatement
or other form of aid program to
support owners in their effort to
repair crumbling bulkheads.
She argues these measures
would ensure the effectiveness
of resiliency measures already
in place.
Post-Sandy, EDC initiated a
multi-million dollar project rebuilding damaged city-owned
bulkheads between the Cross
Bay Bridge and Beach 142nd
Street, including those at Beach

108th Street which collapsed

during the storm. A similar
Broad Channel project is underway as part of the community's street raising project.
However, Pheffer Amato says,
these projects did not address
the miles of privately-held
bulkheads and shoreline in
Rockaway and elsewhere that
remain in disrepair. In a release
she said, Even as many recovery efforts from Sandy reach
their long-awaited completion,
the condition of the bulkheads
continues to receive the attention of community leaders and
local property owners.
It's been four years since
Sandy and property owners
continue to see their bulkheads and shoreline infrastructure crumble into the bay.
I urge the city to work with local homeowners and businesses to address this situation and
provide our community with
the storm resiliency measures
we deserve."

Sandy Friends Indeed: SBP Builds On

By Dan Guarino

Its been four years

since Hurricane Sandy
hit. On the morning after,
neighbors began helping
neighbors, and helping
hands came from all parts
of the world.
One group, Friends of
Rockaway, was started
locally to help with relief.
Later joining with the St.
Bernard Project, named
for the New Orleans parish where they started,
they stayed for the peninsulas recovery. Four
years later the group, now
known as SBP, is still dedicated to rebuilding Rockaway and Broad Channel.
The Rockaway Times
dropped in this week to
their headquarters on
Beach 88th Street off
Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Housed in the former Dart Awning Company digs, their large
space is filled with tools,

stacked supplies, desks

and large organizational charts to track their
ongoing projects and all
the volunteers who help
make them happen.
One wall features photos of some of the hundreds of homeowners
they have helped so far.
By 8 a.m. staff are rolling
in, booting up laptops,
checking schedules and
prepping tools for a new
week of rebuilding work.
Angela Calabra, Volunteer Coordinator, talked
with RT about their work
and their Dine Out for
Hurricane Sandy Recovery event this weekend.
On Sunday, October
30, during selected hours,
Boardwalk Pizzeria, Bungalow Bar, Jameson's Pub,
Pico RBNY, Playland Motel, Rockaway Brewing
Co., and Sayra's Wine Bar
& Bier Garden will be donating a portion of their
sales to help us fund re-

building the remaining

homes on our waitlist.
We are committed to
staying in the community,
until the last homeowner
has rebuilt, Calabra says.
However, funding and
volunteers continue to
be our biggest barriers
in terms of getting the job
done.
People can get involved by donating financially or signing up to
volunteer with us on our
website at www.friendsofrockaway.org.
She explains FoR is a
community-based construction non-profit organization (which was)
founded in response
to the (devastation) of
Sandy. It has since been
rebuilding homes in
Rockaway, Broad Channel, Queens and southern
Brooklyn.
Now as a branch operation of the national
non-profit SBP, we con-

tinue to rebuild homes for

Sandy survivors who were
displaced after the storm.
SBP rebuilds owner-occupied homes destroyed in natural disasters
in a prompt, efficient and
predictable manner. We
shrink the time between
disaster and recovery. We
are committed to being in
the community to the end.
After Sandy struck,
many groups that provided everything from hot

food and clothing to financial, medical and legal

help, focused on emergency relief efforts. After several months, once
the immediate need for
help subsided and things
moved into the longterm
recovery and rebuilding
phases, they moved on.
So why is FoR/SBP still
doing what they do?
Calabra explains, Although, the need for

Got My Vote
Dear Editor :
U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara has slammed the state
Legislature
and
Governor Cuomo for not moving
more aggressively on ethic
reform. The corruption in
Albany is mind-boggling.
Even Joe Addabbo said last
year that some 30 N.Y. politicians are in jail convicted of corruption. NOTHING has been done since.
In fact, just last week Gov.
Cuomo's closest aids have
resigned, as they are now
under investigation for cor-

ruption by Bharara.
We cannot keep electing
the same old politicians
who say a lot, but do nothing! Alan Zwirn and Mike
Conigliaro want term limits. Please let's sweep out
the old, and start fresh in
January. Nepotism is not
enough reason to elect
someone to the Assembly.
Vote for Alan Zwirn,
Mike Conigliaro, and Mike
O'Reilly on November 8th.
PAT JOHNSON

Fighting City
Hall

Dear Editor :
The Democratic candidate for the Assembly is
currently posing as a fighter
against City Hall. However
if she follows in her mother's footsteps as our representative in Albany we, the
voters, will be left in the
cold. Stacey's mother, who
appointed her as the Democratic nominee, is one of
the key leaders of the ma-

chine that runs Albany and

City Hall. As part of the political establishment, Stacey will dutifully vote the
party line, as did her mother, whose obedience led to
her plumb political job as
Clerk of Queens County.
Below is an excerpt from
The Wave in 2003, which
indicates the voting pattern
we can expect from Stacey
Pheffer Amato.
November 1, 2003 -With
each passing day it becomes clearer that the
money New York City lost
when the commuter tax was
repealed will never be coming back to the residents
of the city. While Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer,
who voted along with the
Democratic majority for the
repeal of the tax, has never
explained why she voted to
hurt the city in that way...
Pheffer should explain her
vote to those who elected
her, preferably at an open,
public forum.
My strong recommendation is to vote for Alan

The Rockaway Times

Zwirn. Alan can only be
placed in office by us, the
voters. It is time to send a
message to our elected officials that we expect them to
represent our interests, not
their bosses. As we face issues that are critical for our

Homelessness
By Lou Pastina

Have you ever had a dream

where you cant get home, or
worse you dont have a home?
These are among my worst nightmares. The worst is when I halfwake up and ask the flippered
one, Are you my wife? That is
usually followed by a blow to the
head and a command to go back
to sleep!
But homelessness is a reality for far too many people in
this city, country and world.
There are those who never had a
chance, and there are those who
have simply fallen on hard times.
Politicians have been trying to
solve this problem forever. Some
have come close to providing
humane solutions, others have
failed miserably, and still others
have simply moved the problem
to someone elses backyard.

The Rockaways were a dumping ground for decades and only

recently emerged from failed
policies, as a place people would
want to live, not be forced to live.
But as the infrastructure building
starts to come to an end, and the
overruns in the Build it Back balloon, you get the funny feeling
that the city will ask Rockaway for
a favor.
To me Arverne By the Sea was
the changing point. That development proved that market rate
housing could be built on long
abandoned lots and attract working class people. Even after Sandy
people came. Those homes are
for people who have steady jobs
and are good credit risks for
long-term mortgages. But where
do the people who cant afford a
roof over their heads go? That is
the dilemma.
My hometown of Greenpoint,
and neighboring Williamsburg,
is probably the most expensive
place to live in New York these
days. The waterfront along Kent
Avenue is a construction zone of
condos that start in the millions

of dollars. Most of what was there

was factories and long abandoned breweries (think Schaeffer
and Rheingold). But many of the
blocks are dotted with condos
that are the result of inherited
real estate sold by this generation
to developers because they no
longer live in town. And who can
blame them/us? The towns we
grew up in were working class,
boring and not where we aspired
to live. Unfortunately every time
that happens, apartments that
were rented by the Greatest Generation at below market rents
to other working class families
disappear.
And whose fault is it that below
market apartments are being replaced by high-rise, expensive
condos? Is it those that bought
or built those buildings over 100
years ago? No. Is it the generations that lived there or the generations that sold them? No. Is
it the politicians who changed
city-zoning rules to allow condo
developers to offer extravagant
prices, and then build outsized
condos with even more extrava-

gant prices? Bingo!

You have to question the urban planning policies of the government who are the very ones
looking for solutions to homelessness. They helped create the
very problems they are trying to
solve. So while its great to see
development, be wary of what
may follow. Look at the Nassau
County chief executive now under indictment and the payoffs
to developers. Be especially wary
of zoning changes. Yes working
class neighborhoods can be boring, but they are the places where
you can live reasonably, raise a
family safely and hope for the
next generation.
There has to be humaneness
to solving homelessness, and
that starts with balance, and
it continues with education,
and jobs the very things our
government leaders should be
providing. Lets hope that this
election season brings sanity,
honesty and integrity back into
forefront, and a humane solution
for putting roofs over the heads of
our fellow human beings.

Solutions, Not Shelters

On Friday, October 21,

Councilman Eric Ulrich, Senator Joe Addabbo and several
other community leaders and
residents, went to City Hall to
protest Mayor Bill de Blasios
failing policies for handling the
citys ever-increasing homeless population. Ulrich called

for the protest in response to

the news that the Department
of Homeless Services was renting rooms at Rockaways Playland Motel and other hotels
across the city to house the
homeless, without community
notice.

e r v i ng

The more I get to hear Councilman Eric Ulrich speak, the

more I realize how truly lucky
we are. Not only are we fortunate to have him represent large
parts of the Rockaway peninsula and Broad Channel, but that
he represents and fights for all
of NYC.
His staunch opposition to
the de Blasio administration's
bad policies and handling of
the City's homeless problem is
spot on! His opposition of the
administrations mishandling
to the Build it Back program is
inspiring! His opposition to the
administration's poor record
in the recovery of our parks
and playgrounds on the peninsula, which were obliterated
more than five and four years
ago from Hurricanes Irene and
Sandy, benefits all New Yorkers.
Not only do his immediate constituents in southern Queens

benefit, but all of NYC wins because of Eric's efforts across the
board.
Councilman Ulrich's full
grasp of The New York City
Charter gives him a greater
knowledge for which path our
City should be headed. This
shows as he runs circles around
the majority of his colleagues
in the City Council. As one of
the councils handful of Republicans, Councilman Ulrich has
continuously shown bipartisan
cooperation with the Democrat-run City Council, by being
one of only four Councilmen to
have had the foresight in agreeing to join in the original Participatory Budget process several
years ago, a process that can
easily be considered "extremely progressive." His bipartisanship continues to this day as he
works tirelessly in the Council to
better the lives of our veterans.
I'm not really sure what the
future holds for our great city,
but we can rest assured that
when push comes to shove,
Eric will not let our great city
fall the way of Detroit or Trenton or San Francisco!

Cheers for Ulrich

A road is a road is a road?

Not to Ed Wilmarth III, the
Broad Channel Volunteer Fire

its well-versed historian. His family has lived in the Channel and
served in the Volies for generations. So he knows its streets pretty well.
He came up with this fun quiz

what those past and present Broad

Think you know the answers?

Our deepest fear is not that

we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our
light, not our darkness, that
most frightens us. Marianne
Williamson. Life is full of twists
and turns. There are times we
do not realize the power within
us until we are forced to access
it. Each one of us has a beautiful
tapestry within ourselves full of
creativity and uniqueness. Taking the road less travelled can be
so much more interesting and
exciting, however, very scary.
You will find the path that resonates within your heart space
and when you do, your wings

will soar open. It is there for

each and every one of us but we
need to believe in our Source.
Go deep, be still and trust.
Meditation is everywhere in
Rockaway. Its a really great
way to find yourself and all
that it encompasses. It is not
easy by any means but it is
well worth the time to start a
meditation practice. For me,
morning and evening are the
best times to meditate. After a
good nights sleep your mind
is quiet and sometimes not being fully awake in the world allows you to be in a good place
on your meditation cushion.
For many years my meditation

NY Medical
SKIN SOLUTIONS

cushion was a decoration on

my bed. Now it is on my mat
in my daughters room who is
away at college. Having a nice
place to sit quietly with an altar of sacred items makes my
meditation more meaningful. I
meditate for others and myself.
When I dwell in peace I extend
it unconditionally. Intentions
are really important in my
meditation and yoga practice.
Do something for someone
else and you will be rewarded
in many ways. But practice with
no expectations of reward. Just
do the work and all will come.
Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo,
I bow to all teachers. We learn
new things from one another
when we respect and are open
to all the possibilities. Life is
like a parachute, it only works
when its open. I believe we
have so much to learn from
one another, the good and the
bad. Take each experience as a
lesson and then move on. Hold
no grudges and let go of your
agenda. So often we do not
reverence our teachers. I am often drawn to teachers who are
open and willingly share their

Page 29
knowledge and wisdom. I soak
it all up and I am forever grateful for their generosity.
I am done searching, I have
found my peace. It all started
eight years ago when I opened
a yoga studio, Ocean Bliss Yoga
in the Rockaways. I was a new
teacher with little experience
but I had faith and was not
afraid to fail. I quit my day job,
with the support of my loving
husband, Pat, and joined Mrs.
Elaines Dance Studio. From
day one, Elaine supported and
believed we would be successful. I believe we have helped
many people find their peace
and serenity in our community. Yoga is for everyone was
my first motto. Now my motto
is, I came for yoga and stay for
community. We are powerful
beyond measure and I thank all
of my students for teaching me.
Are you looking for me? I
am in the next seat. When you
really look for me, you will see
me instantly. You will find me
in the tiniest house of time. Kabir says: Student, tell me, what
is God? He is the breath inside
the breath. - Kabir.

Pain
By Peter Galvin, MD

Many people who suffer from

chronic pain often attribute
changes in their symptoms to
the weather. In one study, 92
percent of patients suffering
from widespread, chronic pain
believed that their symptoms
were exacerbated by humid or
cold weather. This perceived
correlation can even be seen
in English language phrases
like under the weather and
right as rain. However scientific studies exploring an
association between pain and
the weather have reached little consensus in results, even
when looking at the same type

of pain caused by the same disease. The answer to such a relationship, if indeed one actually
exists, could help doctors assist
patients to manage their chronic pain.
Much of the research that has
been done has focused on how
weather factors affect pain from
arthritis. This is most likely due
to the fact that arthritis sufferers are the most likely group of
those with chronic pain to associate their pain with weather conditions. Yet most of the
studies that have been done
have failed to find a link between the two, although several
studies did find a link, albeit a
weak one, between osteoar-

in barometric pressure. These
studies postulated that a drop
in barometric pressure, which
translates to less air pressure
pushing on the joints, would allow the joint tissues to expand
thereby increasing joint swelling and inflammation.
A study done in England
found that patients with rheumatoid arthritis reported less
pain on longer warm days than
on colder days with less sunshine. They found that those
reporting chronic, widespread
pain or any pain was highest
in winter and lowest in summer. It should be noted, however, that shortening the length
of the day and the amount of
sunshine has been linked to depression, anxiety and pains and
aches. This is especially true of
most Rockawayites who love
summer but hate winter. I think
most of us get cabin fever at
some point during the winter.
Other studies have looked
for a link between cold weather and pain. Cold temperatures
cause an increase in heart rate
and blood pressure and a re-

lease of certain hormones like

epinephrine and adrenalin.
Again the results of these studies have been both inconclusive and contradictory. A pain
weather link has been studied in other diseases including
sickle cell disease, nerve pain,
migraines, fibromyalgia, back
pain, and temporomandibular
joint disorders and no definite
link was found. Despite the lack
of hard evidence to date linking pain with weather changes,
there are still a number of experts who feel that a link does
exist and that it just hasnt been
found yet. Or it may just be that
some people are more sensitive
to pain and weather changes
than others. One study found
that women are more sensitive
to weather changes than men,
but then again my wife says that
women are just more sensitive
in general, and shes probably
right. So the next time someone
says to you that it feels like rain,
ask them where it hurts and get
your umbrella out.

RAA Arts Away At Tilden

By Dan Guarino

The Rockaway Artists Alliance

served up a double dose of art
last Sunday, October 23, at Fort
Tilden. RAA hosted well-attended opening receptions for its two
newest exhibitions, Portraits
and Inksplash! in its T-6 and
T-7 Galleries.
Presented in the T-6 Gallery,
Portraits takes a new look at

the age-old genre and how it reflects on the character and the
inner lives of both the sitter
and artist. Works in a variety of
media and diverse approaches
explore the artistic boundary
of "self" and "other," and challenge preconceived notions of
portraiture. Done in a variety
of genres and styles, the works
run from whimsical to solemn
and from almost fantasy paint-

ing to photographic realism.

Portraits artists include Patricia Battiato, Amanda Christianson, Shannon Dziuk, Dave
Foss, Miriam Grossman, Dan
Guarino, Margaret Harkin, Lee
Ann Lindgren, Lloyd Mitchell,
Richella Morgan, Ralph Petagna and Sharon Tiesi.
In the T-7 Gallery, RAA's annual invitational printmaking
exhibition, Inksplash! also
marks the first anniversary of
the RAA Press, the first professional art printmaking studio in
Queens. Inksplash! features
works by many local artists who
have attended its Open Studios and workshops and that
of printmakers who have contributed to the growing print
community at RAA Press. This
year the 22-plus artist roster
includes master printmakers,
innovators and artists discovering the fine art of printmaking. Their works will showcase
such techniques as mono print,
relief, solar plate etching, photo transfers and experimental
techniques celebrating print-

making in a changing world.

Many of the artists were on
hand at Sundays receptions,
which were free and open to
the public. Along with a hundred or so guests, NY1 News
reporter Chelsea Katz also
came. While covering the dual
opening, she also interviewed
various RAA members, and got
an on-camera demonstration
of the printmaking press in action.
Inksplash! was organized
by the RAA Press Printmaking
Studio Committee. According
to RAA, this included exhibition curator Christian Le Gars,
and RAA Press director Victoria Barber and Melissa Rubin who organized the artist
line-up. They noted that RAAs
Jason Novetsky and Esther
Grillo hung the entire show
and members Jean Lieber,
Mercedes Gallese and Neddi
Heller made our gallery and
studio sparkle and welcoming.
Adding a touch of the season,

Honey Mustard
Chicken Recipe
By Sharon Feldman

Prep time: 10 minutes

Cook time: 45 minutes
Serves: 4-6
If you don't want to eat skinon chicken, still cook the dish
with the skin-on, even if you
don't eat it. The skin will protect
the meat from drying out.
Ingredients
1/4 to 1/3 cup smooth Dijon
mustard
1/4 to 1/3 cup honey
1 Tbsp olive oil
2-3 pounds chicken thighs (or
legs)
Salt
Freshly ground black pepper
2 sprigs rosemary (or a generous sprinkling of dried rosemary)
Directions:
Preheat the oven to 350F. In
a medium bowl, whisk together

the mustard, honey, and olive

oil. Add a pinch of salt and taste.
Add more salt and mustard until you get the flavor where you
want it.
Salt the chicken lightly and
lay the pieces skin-side up in a
shallow casserole dish. Spoon
the honey mustard sauce over
the chicken. Place the rosemary
sprigs in between the pieces of
chicken.
Bake for 45 minutes, or until
the thighs read 175 on a meat
thermometer, or the juices run
clear when the meat is pierced
with a knife. Remove the casserole pan from the oven, use a
spoon to spoon off any excess
chicken fat that has rendered
during the cooking.
Sprinkle some freshly ground
black pepper over the chicken
before you serve.

Boats, Buses and BCD on Agenda

By Dan Guarino
Community
Board
14s
Transportation
Committee
meeting
was concluded within
90 minutes on Monday,
October 24, but it covered a lot of ground.
The meeting, directed by committee cochairs Marty Ingram
and Danny Ruscillo,
held at the Knights of
Columbus, was attended by about 30 people.
First NYC Economic Development Corporation representatives Justine Johnson
and Alex Brady discussed $18.75 million in additional
funds earmarked for
the coming ferry project. It represents $15
million secured by
then-Congressman
Anthony Weiner for a
then proposed Rockaway ferry, plus $3.75
million in city matching funds.
As capital improvement funds, the money can only be spent
on permanent fixtures
such as infrastructure,
amenities and anything non-removable,
and not apply to programs or operating
subsidies.
EDC's
reps made
clear this is over and
above the current funding for the planned
NYC ferry services and
in no way impacts that
program, which is already fully funded and
on schedule.
Before plans are
drawn up for the additional funds, Johnson
said, EDC is outreaching to the community
to find out What kind
of infrastructure will
support ferry service in
Rockaway?
On November 21 they
will address Community Board 14 to get ide-

as about what types of

projects peninsula residents would like the
money to go towards.
In December, they
will return with initial
proposals based on
that input. The final
planning process will
then start, followed by
the design phase and
then the start of construction.
Part of the EDC team
effort is exploring how
to make Beach 108th
Street (where the ferry will stop) a more
welcoming place and
how to expand service further east and
west. Brady stated that,
based on community
feedback, We want to
make sure were getting the best for this
money.
Possibilities
mentioned by committee
members included fixing sidewalks, creating a safe crossing on
Beach Channel Drive
to the ferry landing
at Beach 108th Street,
handicapped
accessibility, and the purchase of new boats.
Next a team from
the NYC Department
of Design and Construction and the Department of Transportation spoke on a
major street reconstruction for Beach
Channel Drive which
will involve a groundup road rebuild from
Beach 116th Street to
Beach 124th.
The $15,723 project is
sponsored by the DOT
and NYC Department
of Environmental Protection. Construction
would start in the fall of
2017 and be fully completed by December
2019. It would involve
a full reconstruction
of the roadway with
three-inches of asphalt
laid over nine-inches

EDCs Alex Brady and Justine Johnson meet with CB 14s Transportation Committee

of new concrete base,

new steel-faced concrete curbs and gutters, new sidewalks
within the right of way,
new catch basins and
new highway drains
and manholes for basin connections, new
standard and high visibility crosswalks and
new lighting throughout.
There would be an
expansion of the east
facing triangle at the
intersection of Beach
116th Street and Beach
Channel Drive, a new
planted median on
Beach 116th with pedestrian refuge and an
expansion of the Beach
Channel Drive median,
also with a pedestrian
refuge for safer crossing.
Also water mains will
be replaced and damaged sanitary sewers
will be repaired and
replaced, from Beach
124th Street to just past
Beach 116th Street on
BCD, and extend down
Beach 116th to Rockaway Beach Boulevard,

and continue to Beach

114th.
The
presentation
noted Beach Channel
Drive sustained damage during Hurricane
Sandy and continues to deteriorate, and
existing drainage facilities areno longer
functioning optimally. Plus BCD is a truck
route, main evacuation
road and the primary
east-west route for the
entire peninsula.
Construction would
be scheduled 9 a.m.
to 4 p.m. Monday to
Friday, with access at
all times and all lanes
open on weekends.
Some
committee
members noted Rockaways longtime summer embargo on construction, and raised
concerns about how
the project would affect the expected eight
million visitors next
year.
DDC
confirmed
there would be no work
on weekends, and suspending work on Fri-

days if needed could

be considered. But,
they stated, summer
suspension of work
would add two years to
the project, at a cost of
$1.5 million per year.
Committee
member Dolores Orr noted
not all summer visitors would be coming
through that area and
impact would be no
different than what
was done during the
Bay Wall reconstruction.
DDC and DOT confirmed they want to
work with the community as this project develops.
The last item was
the Citys current Select Bus Service traffic
plan. Co-chair Ingram
stated it would constrict the daily flow
of thousands of cars,
remove traffic lanes
and do away with bus
stops. The committee
voted to oppose the
plan in short order.
They were ready to
keep things moving!

We might be a little biased but we think some of the best photographers in the
world live in Rockaway. Here are some shots that readers shared with us this
week. Send your photos (limit to 2 per week) to mail@rockawaytimes.com and
well do our best to print them (space permitting). We do receive more than we
can print.

Clean that Chrome

By Artie Wallace

As with most cleaning, everyone has their own little tricks that
work. This week Susanne and I
put our heads together and boy
did it hurt But really we wanted
to see what ideas we could come
up with to clean chrome. Heres
what we decided to share with
you.
Steel wool:
Steel wool works great to take
off some of the mild to mid range
rust. Just be sure to use a little soap (everyday dishwashing
soap works great) to help prevent
scratch marks.
Brillo:
Owning a motorcycle and living
in the Rockaways, I know what
kind of rust can set in. I like using
Brillo to get a lot of the heavy rust
off from the weather. Making sure
it is soaked to get the full results of

the soap in it and rubbing gently

to not scratch the chrome seems
to work for me.
CLR:
CLR (Calcium Lime & Rust
Remover) is great for cleaning
chrome. I recommend it for a final
cleaning after using the Brillo or
Steel Wool to get the heavy rust off.
Online tips I found:
1- Aluminum foil: Ive seen it
said that wetting aluminum foil
and rubbing it on the rust will remove it.
2- Vinegar: Vinegar is said to be
extremely acidic and works well
as a chrome cleaner.
3- Salt and lemon juice in equal
parts is said to clean light rust
from chrome.
4- Cola is said to work pretty
well. I remember the days of using it to clean battery terminals
on a car. I guess it could work on
chrome too.

5- Flour buffed into the chrome

and cleaning it off with water
seems to be a popular method.
Other methods found included Cooking Spray, Dryer Sheets,
Baby Wipes and so on.
Note: I personally have not
tried the methods I found on-

The Rockaway Times

line, I am sharing them to give
you more options to try. Id like
to hear which methods you tried
and what worked best for you.

Thanks, Bossman
By Katie McFadden

When the cats away, the mice

will play. Mr. Editor-in-Chief
Kevin Boyle, who I like to refer to
as bossman, is across the pond,
leaving me and my co-workers
in charge. If nobody gets the paper on Thursday, I, Katie McFadden, claim full responsibility.
But bossman seems to trust me
enough to take charge.
This may be better suited for
next month, in the time for giving thanks, but its not everyday I
get to express gratitude to the guy
who seems to think I can handle
getting his publication out to the
masses. He would scrap this in a
heartbeat if it were up to him, after secretly gushing.
Boyle has always given me opportunity. As a kid more than a
year out of college, working for
an online word factory and desperate for a job that was more fulfilling in the field that I spent four
years studying for, he gave me a
shot at The Wave in January 2013.
I dont think he ever read my resume. Maybe it was because he

lives across the street from me.

Yet I dont think I had said more
than a hello to him prior to him
hiring me, which is pretty standard for our quiet block. Maybe it
was because he felt he owed my
family a favor.
Whatever the reason, I could
not have been more excited to
start my first real job as a newspaper reporter. That was until my
very first article was published. I
finally had the opportunity to put
everything I learned in school
to the test, and I couldnt wait
to see my first byline in print. I
wanted to do my best work for
my first piece. As far as spelling
and grammar goes, Id say it was
flawless. Yet, when it came out
in print, there were some added
typos and even some misspelled
names that had mysteriously appeared. Lets just say that Boyle
lets me do most of my own editing nowadays. Except when I get
a little too wordy. Hes a lot better
at cutting my work than adding
things in. He often reminds me of
a quote by Blaise Pascal along the
lines of I am sorry I had to write

Whale, Hello There

The humpback whales were

out and about this week, putting
on quite the show not far off the
beach. Ed Gormley caught this
impressive shot off Beach 121st
Street on Tuesday. Captain Tom
Paladino of American Princess

you such a long letter, but I did

not have time to write you a short
one. I think Ive gotten better at
keeping things shorter, but this
one will be a challenge.
The opportunities Boyle has
given me extended far beyond
that first shot. Throughout the
years he has awarded me several
opportunities to write front-page
stories and has featured several
of my photos on the cover. Only
a maniac would think its a good
idea to start a newspaper in an
age where newspapers are dying.
But he knew what he was doing.
And lucky for me, he allowed me
to join in on the new adventure as
a freelance writer in August 2014,
two months after The Rockaway
Times was born. I gradually became an official reporter and he
gave me an even bigger role when
he made me assistant editor in
December 2015. And if it were not
for him encouraging me to write a
tribute to my dad for fathers day
and submitting it to the New York
Press Associations Better Newspaper Contest, I would not have
been named an award-winning

writer this past April. Boyle has

allowed me to feel like a big fish
in a small pond when it comes to
community journalism.
Its not often that people can say
they love their boss. I guess Im
one of those lucky few. Of course
there are those times where he
fully utilizes his boss role, when
Im not always on my game. But
hes also been supportive in times
when I cant even get off the
bench. Boyle is more than a boss.
Hes a mentor, a neighbor and a
friend.
Our readers dont get to see
what goes on behind the scenes,
but I can tell you The Rockaway
Times is a family. A dysfunctional family most days, but what
family isnt? I couldnt make it
through this week of being interim editor-in-chief without the
support of Managing Director Pat
McVeigh, reporter Dan Guarino,
our numerous columnists and
our ad salesmen.
And to bossman, have a pint
of Guinness for me in Ireland.
You deserve it. I got this, I think.
Thank you for everything.
