GOSPEL OF MARK NT352

FALL 2016
Jesus is Rejected
Mark 6:1-29

JESUS IS REJECTED AT
NAZARETH 1-6
His Hometown and Trade 1-3

His hometown from childhood Nazareth, not Capernaum

Wisdom and mighty works undeniable yet this clashes with their perception of him
They knew Jesus as the carpenter and the son of one (Mt 13:55)
They knew Jesus as the son of Mary with these other brothers and sisters

His home town

of Nazareth is
quite a
distance from
his ministry
base in
Capernaum

JESUS IS REJECTED AT
NAZARETH 1-6
His Peoples Unbelief 4-6
Those nearest to him had the least faith (until resurrection)
How can Jesus, the Son of God, be unable to do a mighty work anywhere?
Jesus Marveled at their unbelief he marveled only twice in New Testament:
Faith of centurion where one would not expect faith (Matt 8:10)
Lack of faith in Nazareth where one would expect it! (Mk 6:6)

JESUS SENDS OUT THE

TWELVE DISCIPLES 7-13
He Instructed Them and Sent Them 7-11
After a time with the teacher they must step out in faith for hands on experience
He sent them in teams of two what are the reasons he did it this way?
In accordance with the law to establish a truth (Deut 19:15; Mt 18:16)
Ministry and the Christian walk is not a do it yourself solo experience

He gave them authority for the mission and then limited their resources

JESUS SENDS OUT THE

TWELVE DISCIPLES 7-13
The Disciples Preached and Delivered and Healed 12-13

They preached that people should repent notice this was first in order
They cast out demons spiritual emancipation is part of the gospel!
They anointed the sick with oil not a formality but a medicinal practice
They healed them above and beyond anointing with oil = immediate

JOHN THE BAPTIST IS

BEHEADED 14-29
Various Ideas of who Jesus was 14-16
The news of Jesus work and His ministry His team became well known

JOHN THE BAPTIST IS

BEHEADED 14-29
Mark Recounts Johns Death 21-29
Strange but true, Herod used to visit and listen to John gladly while in prison
Herodias, NOT Herod, resented John for fear of losing her royal position note:
Herodias was first the wife of Herods half-brother Phillip = sister-in-law!
She was ALSO daughter of Herods other half-brother Aristobulus = niece!
This is Herod Antipas son of Herod the Great (ordered death of children)
Herod in pride makes a foolish promise people act foolishly when intoxicated
Herod chose public opinion and to save his self image over doing what is right

THE POWER OF THE SON OF GOD
MARK 6:30-56

Jesus Calls the Disciples to

Rest with Him 30-32
Disciples Return from Being Sent Out 30-32

They are back from the mission of preaching, delivering and healing (7-13)
Jesus calls them to rest with Him in a deserted place alone they needed it!
How do we know we are headed for burnout, not being refreshed?

Jesus Feeds the

Five Thousand 33-44
Multitude Arrives Ahead of Disciples and Jesus 33-36

The crowd knew the spot they were planning to go to and arrived first
Disciples state the obvious and suggest sending away the people - why?

Jesus Feeds the

Five Thousand 33-44
Jesus Multiplies the Bread and Fish 37-44

Before Jesus intervenes, He involves the disciples You give them to eat!
Love for Jesus translates into loving others we love in deed not in word only
Jesus gives an impossible command 12 must feed 5,000 with no resources
They have only five barley loaves and two fish enough for a family of four

Jesus Walks on
Water 45-52
Jesus sends away the Disciples and the Multitude 45-46

Jesus made (forced) the disciples to leave by boat ahead of him for Bethsaida
Jesus again taught and DEMONSTRATED servant leadership by example
Jesus goes alone to pray while the disciples were crossing over

Bethsaida was
located on the
north shore of
the Sea of
Galilee.
Gennesaret was
a plain on the
northwest side
of the Sea
between
Tiberias and
Capernaum.

Jesus Sees Disciples Straining on the Sea 47-48

Mark draws our attention to the boat on the sea and to Jesus alone on the land
Fourth watch of the night = between 3 and 6 am (minimal visibility in moonlight)
Struggling for their obedience not for their self-will = the life of discipleship!

Jesus Walks on
Water 45-52
Disciples Think Jesus is a Ghost 49-52

Jesus definitely has a great sense of humor - was passing them by quietly!
This is the account when Peter walks on the water to Jesus (Mt 14:28-33)
If he commands us he will also enable us to do it as we respond in faith
We always sink when we focus on our surroundings rather than Gods Word

Jesus Heals the Sick

at Gennesaret 53-56
Arrival at Gennesaret 53-56

The crowds and response throughout the villages were at epic proportions
People now implored him to touch the fringe of his garment why?
