C*o1qie play

From The Principal-Kendall Lange

Welcome back to everyone for what we know will be a fun and
exciting Term 4. The end of this school year will be here before
we know it.

SunSmarf Policy
The weather has finally broken and we are once again able to get
out and enjoy the beautiful sunshine. This does however bring
with it a warning for students, parents and staff about the need to
be SunSmart and to make sure they Slip, Slop, Slap every day

before spending time in the sun. Therefore I remind all about our
school's SunSmart and No Hat-No Play policies' Playing outside
is encouraged by staff and occasionally students are disappointed
that they are not able to play with their friends but our policy aims

to develop sensible attitudes and practices when it comes

to

Road Safe$
Over the past few weeks I have been made aware of a number of
incidents and near misses involving both students at this school
and neighbouring schools. We do our best to teach Road Safety
messages at school, and will continue to revaluate how we do this

in order to improve effectiveness, but it is essential that children

are receiving consistent Road Safety messages from both home
and school. Here is a list of some general road safety messages
from the Road Safety Commission that parents might find useful.

General road safety messages:

spending time outside.

2017 Year 6 Camp

The proposed dates for the 2017 Year

6L to Friday 1Ott' February (Week 2, Term

1). The reason for the

Camp are Monday

timing is that we believe a camp held earlier in the year provides

greater benefits for the students both educationally and socially.
ihis was the only available week in Term 1. We are aware that
being so early in the year, and so close to Christmas, this can

place an added financial burden on parents and families.

A meeting has therefore been scheduled for parents of current
Year 5 students for 3:00pm next ThursdaY 20tn October in
Room 10, At this meeting we will discuss the proposal, the
estimated costs and explore possible alternatives if this proposal
proves unworkable. lf you are unable to attend the meeting next
week, please provide feedback on the form sent home with your
child. The form should be returned to the classroom teacher
before the meeting so your responses can be considered.

and impressed, not only by the skill and talent on display but also

in coming years I say "aim high and practice hard".

lnterschool Carnival
On Friday 16th September many of our students travelled to
Forrestdale to represent our school at the lnterschool Athletics
Carnival. I really enjoyed the venue and the atmosphere on the
day and even though we managed to win both the Overall and
Handicap Shields, what impressed me most was the level of effort
and sporlsmanship our students displayed throughout the day.
lf parents have any suggestions on improvements with regards to
the carnival please let us know so this can be considered when

pedestrian,

developing road safety skills. Guide them in learning good

road safety habits.

Children cannot accurately judge the speed of approaching

traffic so they struggle to pick a safe gap in which to cross the
road. Never call your child across the road.

Talk to your child about what to do

if

unexpected things
happen e.g. the ball rolls out onto the road, a car is backing

out of a driveway.

Praise good road safety behaviour from your children and

encourage them to observe good road safety behaviour.
As adults we are responsible for the safety of our children
around traffic, whether they are pedestrians, passengers,
riders or just playing.

Walking

to and from school with your child is the

perfect

hands to keep them safe.

Wet days mean more traffic & less visibility. Use your lights so
your vehicle can be seen, bring an umbrella and be prepared
to walk a bit further than usual to collect your child. lt is better
to catch a cold than to collect a car!
Make yourself aware of what your child can actually see, hear,
and do at the roadside. Remember that children are unable to
judge speeds of approaching vehicles and drivers find them
harder to see.
Always use the kerb drill to cross the road:
STOP one steP back from the kerb
LOOK for traffic coming from all directions
LISTEN for approaching vehicles that you cannot see yet
THINK about whether this is a good time

For the first four weeks of term 4 we will be focussing on the

virtue of Helpfulness. You are demonstrating Helpfulness when you:

positive role model when you are

passenger & rider. Children learn from what they see as well
as what we say. Never sacrifice safety for convenience'
Adults must always set a good example. Always wear your
seatbelt, obey the road rules & encourage your children to do
the same. Children learn by copying what we do'
When you are out with your child help them practice their

VIRTUE

opportunity to demonstrate good road safety behaviour and

it;s good for you and the environment too. One less car at the
school gate makes it safer for everyone and is often faster
than trying to park closer. Remember, it's good to chat to other
parents but children quickly become bored so hold on to little

Serpi's Got Talent

At the end of last term a number of our students performed as
part of the Serpi's Got Talent Assembly. I was extremely proud
by the courage it takes to perform in front of an audience,
including class mates. To those students who performed I say
"keep up the good work". To those who were inspired to perform
