LESSON 1

Learning Objective: The aim of this lesson is to list examples of what


Photoshop software can be used for, list the different parts of the Photoshop
workspace, successfully create a new document, resize images and rename
layers.
1.0 What is Photoshop?
Adobe Photoshop is a raster graphics editor developed and published by
Adobe Systems for Windows and OS X.
Like any image-editing program, you can use Photoshop to "alter" images
like photos, downloaded icons, or scanned artwork.

2.0 Which program do I use?


Adobe Creative Cloud gives you the world's best creative apps and
they're always up to date; so you can turn your brightest ideas into your
greatest work across your desktop and mobile devices.

4.0 Photoshop Workspace

A. The tools panel: Contains tools for creating and editing images,
artwork, page elements, and so on. Related tools are grouped together.
B. The document window: Displays the file youre working on.
Document windows can be tabbed and, in certain cases, grouped and
docked.
C. The layers panel: Where we handle all of our layer-related tasks, from
adding and deleting layers, to adding layer masks and adjustment
layers, changing layer blend modes, turning layers on and off in the
document, renaming layers and grouping layers.

5.0 Tools Panel


Description
Move Tool

Image

The move tool simply lets you move objects in a given


layer around the Photoshop canvas. E.g. moving an image
up or down.
Magic Wand
Clicking an area with the magic wand will tell Photoshop
to select the spot you clicked on and anything around it
that's similar. E.g. Selecting just the head from a photo.
Crop Tool
The crop tool is used to (surprise!)
Eye Dropper Tool
The eyedropper tool lets you click on any part of the
canvas and sample the colour at that exact point
Paint Brush and Pencil Tool
The paintbrush is a tool that imitates a paintbrush and
the pencil is a tool that imitates a pencil.
Eraser Tool
The erase tool is almost identical to the paintbrush,
except it erases instead of paints.
Type Tool
The type tool lets you type horizontally.
Shape Tool
The shape tool lets you create vector rectangles, rounded
rectangles, circles, polygons, lines, and custom shapes.

It is important to rename your
layers so you dont get confused.

pancakes, a vertical stack with one
thing on top of another.

Activity Two
Follow the checklist step by step. You will be practicing your skills and
editing photos in Photoshop.
1.

Upload an image from the Internet of your favourite T.V show or


favourite sports team

Duplicate the image 4 times in one Photoshop file

Rename the layers 1, 2, 3, 4

Add a different effect to each image through image -> adjustments

Save as Activity 2.psd

Save as Activity 2.jpeg

Add the .jpeg below and list the four different adjustment
effects you used:

Activity Two
Follow the checklist step by step. You will be practicing your skills and
creating an image in Photoshop.

Download the resources file from Compass Simpsons Photoshop

2.

Create a new document in Photoshop. This should be A5 size,


landscape, 150 resolution

3.

Insert the beach image from the resources file . Make it the size of
your document by transforming the size

4.

Rename the layer beach image

Add the image of Bart into your document. Crop the white
background out

Rename the layer to Bart. Place him on the right side of your
image

Add the image of the beach ball into your document. Crop the
white background

Rename the layer to beach ball and place it near Bart on the sand

Save your file as a .psd file. Rename it Photoshop Activity 1

Add the image of the palm tree in your document. Crop the white

background

Learning Objective: The objective of this lesson is to explain what the liquify
tool does, adjust image colour and crop images together.
The Liquify Tool
The Liquify filter lets you push, pull, rotate, reflect, pucker, and bloat any
area of an image. The distortions you create can be subtle or drastic, which

makes the Liquify command a powerful tool for retouching images as well as
creating artistic effects.
