29th /30th OCTOBER 2016

Dear Parishioners,

31st SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

(Year C)

Today salvation has come to this house

These words are difficult for us to believe. Like Zacchaeus in this
Sundays Gospel, we are too short. Even though we do not like to
admit it, we know that we are sinners. We have angry and resentful
thoughts about people we live and work with; we gossip about people behind their back,
and put on a mask when we see them; we say, I love you, to those we use as objects to
satisfy our physical and emotional needs; we hide things from those we love because we
are ashamed of our private actions; we condemn other peoples behaviour, while not
taking seriously our own call to change.
These sins convince us that God cannot, and does not, love us or desire to bring
salvation to our house. We do not believe that God is gazing at us in love and calling us
down from our tree-tops where we are hiding. We choose to continue to hide and look
down on others in fear that by coming down to where God is calling us we are exposed for
who we are: sinners, and that the world, but ultimately, God, will condemn us. But have
courage! God does not come to condemn us. Jesus has come to seek out and save what
was lost. When we choose not to hide from Jesus, and take seriously his offer of
friendship, he gives us the power to change our life, despite the crowd accusing us of being
a sinner unworthy of Gods love.
Zacchaeus gave half his property to the poor, and paid back anyone who he cheated
four times the amount. We too are invited to hurry, and change our life right now: to
pray for our family, work colleagues, and classmates who we struggle to love; to praise
people behind their backs instead of gossiping; to love and not use those we say we love;
to live transparent lives; to first point the finger at ourselves before others. Why do all
this? Because when we commit to living the kind of life that can confidently look Jesus
back in the eye, right now, Jesus says to us the only words that matter in life: Today
salvation has come to this house.
NOVEMBER PRAYING FOR THE DEAD: We remember to pray for all the faithful
departed. Our prayers become their prayers in the presence of a God who loves us all.
Please make sure to fill in their names in our REMEMBRANCE BOOK.
SOLIDARITY CAMPAIGN: Please join in the campaign supporting persecuted
Christian in the Middle East especially in Palestine, (Fr Joe has written a letter of
explanation available at the back of the church).
We welcome back all the families from half term.
Fr Damian
