38

The psychology of special effects

Human sense says: a print is static, i.e. it does
not change the appearance whilst being watched
A non-static picture is perceived as vivid and
attracts attention, e.g.

This is why print gloss is attractive

Metallic inks change the colour shade when changing
the viewing angle and remind of Gold / Silver
The colour of thermochromic inks vary with the
temperature
By application of overprint varnishes (OPV) matt or
gloss effects can be realised

The non-expected attracts attention

39

Fluorescent Inks
Invisible Fluorescent Inks are virtually invisible
on paper in daylight but exhibit distinct
fluorescent shades on exposure to UV light

Fluorescence colour is defined by the wavelength of the

emission peak.
p
2 standard fluorescence colours available (yellow 545
nm, green 522 nm), blue and red on request

Coloured Fluorescent Inks - These inks can be

produced to fluoresce a contrasting colour

A range of colours is available at

It is advised to combine
permanent colours (for the

Compliance

51

Compliance Why? Migration Crisis 2009 onwards.

20+ Full scale food packaging recalls
2009 - 177 Food contact materials alerts on RASFF*
Increased testing of food packaging across Europe
The result = Media Hype

Poisonous packaging
Nick Mansley Packaging News
When a chemical from packaging migrated into baby
milk products in four EU countries in 2005, Tetra Pak
and Nestl were hit with an estimated 1.7m
1 7m bill to recall
food packs over contamination fears.

Germany to ban unsafe printing inks in food

Germany rethinks
recycled cardboard to
tackle migration risks

Materials: Crunch time for food packs

Concerns Over Food Packaging
are Leading Drive for Information

BfR** forum considers safety of recycled packaging

52

* European Food Safety Authority Rapid Alert System for Food & Feed
** BfR = Bundesamt fr Risikobewertung governmental institute

What are the concerns?

Photoinitiators from non-low migration UV ink and

Phthalates
Bisphenyl A

Benzophenone and derivatives
Mineral oils

From recycled board and

55

Which are the elements ?

Good understanding of the legal frame
Appropriate solutions complying with

national and international regulations

specific demands from print buyers
the expectations of multiplicators (institutes,
journalists etc)
, where products and processes are equally
important

Traceability and COMMUNICATION

56

Positive lists
A positive list is an inventory of chemical compounds
from which the manufacturer of consumables selects the
raw materials
In general, it is a challenge to keep a positive list updated
and to incorporate technical innovation in a timely
manner
Typical inventory lists are

Swiss ordinance SR 817.023.21 (last revision in May 2011)

REACh (for Europe)
Europe), TOSCA (for USA),
USA) DSL (for Canada)

EuPIA and the Japanese ink association compiled also

negative lists ("exclusion list").
The compliance with positive lists can be a pre-requisite
to supply brand owners with a high awareness

57

How can we contribute ?

65

Lesson 2: Your customer has to

Lesson 3: Maximise communication

From pack design to shelf every player in

UV and Low Migration printing for food packaging

97

Migration is the transfer of substances from the

packaging to the product
Sensitive products like food, medical, tobacco

Low Migration inks and varnishes
