It is a matter of immense pleasure to share that United Nations in

68th General Assembly Session has proclaimed year 2015 as the
International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL
2015). We are joining the hands with UN by organizing this one
day National Workshop on Energy Efficient Lighting
Technology: Recent Development and Future Ahead.

lamps we now have more long-lasting and efficient alternatives

to older light sources. The present workshop is a committed
effort to disseminate the knowledge about such inventions. We
also grab the opportunity to pay our sincere tribute to one of the
greatest sincere legends; the Nobel laureate Dr. C. V. Raman by
organising the event in the month of November.

Photonics is a branch of science and technology which deals

with generating, controlling, and detecting photons, which are
particles of light. Photonics underpins technologies of daily life
from smart-phones to laptops to the Internet to medical
instruments to lighting technology etc. The 21st century will
depend as much on photonics as the 20th century depended on
electronics. Over the last few decades there have been
remarkable advances in the field of applied optics covering all
aspects of research within modern and classical photonics which
are widely being used in communication, networking, sensing
and many more. It also plays a vital role in various branches like
R & D fields, Space technology and Industry. The performance
of many devices completely depends on the efficiency and other
parameters of optical devices.

About Mody University of Science and Technology

Mody University of Science and Technology (MUST), spread
over 265 acres of lush greenery, is situated at Lakshmangarh
(District Sikar ) on the JaipurBikaner highway (NH 11) and is
ranked among top 45 universities in India and one of the four
leading women universities(India Today, July 14). The university
is covered under section 2(f) of the UGC act, 1956 and is
empowered to award degrees specified by UGC under section 22
of UGC act, 1956. Apart from this, Mody University is ISO
14001:2004 certified.

Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), are semiconductor devices that

produce visible light when an electrical current is passed
through them. LEDs are a type of Solid State Lighting (SSL)
devices, as are organic lightemitting diodes (OLEDs) and
lightemitting polymers (LEPs). The LED lighting differs from
incandescent and compact fluorescent lighting in several ways.
For example size is too small; emits light in a specific direction,
reduces the need for reflectors and diffusers that can trap light.
This feature makes LEDs more efficient for many uses such as
recessed down lights and task lighting. With other types of
lighting, the light must be reflected to the desired direction and
more than half of the light may never leave the fixture. LEDs
emit almost negligible heat. In comparison, incandescent bulbs
release 90% of their energy as heat and CFLs release about 80%
of their energy as heat. When designed well, LED lighting can be
more efficient, durable, versatile and long lasting.

This University offers wide range of courses in broad areas of

Arts, Sciences, Humanities, Architecture, Engineering Fashion
Designing, Management and Law. To enhance global exposure
of the students, more than 20 collaborations and MOUs have
been signed with many International/ National Universities.
About College of Arts Science and Humanities
The College of Arts, Science and Humanities offer a right
platform for pursuing higher education for undergraduate and
postgraduate programs in Physics, Chemistry, Maths,
Biotechnology, Microbiology, Psychology, English Literature
along with various specific Honors programs at UG level. The
college also offers doctoral research programs in the field of Arts,
Sciences and Humanities. The students have easy access to the
state-of-the-art- laboratories equipped with latest instruments
enabling them getting involved in most up-to-date experiments
and research activities. A full-fledged Foreign Language
Department offers any array of options which adds extra
dimension to their learning.
Topic Highlights:

Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano and Shuji Nakamura are

rewarded for inventing a new energy efficient and environmentfriendly light source the blue light-emitting diode (LED). The
Nobel Prize in Physics (2014) has been awarded to them for this
invention of greatest benefit to mankind; by using blue LEDs,
white light can be created in a new way. With the advent of LED
