In the Heat of the Night: Chapter 8
Alotted Time: 1 hour
Sources Used To Develop This Plan:
The book In the Heat of the Night
Worksheets by Mrs. Kos
Rationale:
Ss have been reading through In The Heat of the Night for a week or two. This lesson
concentrates on Chapter 8, but also allows Ss to recap what has happened so far. This lesson
will also move Ss out of the role of simply observing a story to creating one, by coming up
with an alternate Chapter 8, thus hopefully encouraging their creative, story-telling sides.
Provincial Learning Outcomes:
Language and text can be a source of joy
Exploring text and story helps us understand ourselves and make connections to others and
to the world.
Lesson Outcome:
Ss will be able to better understand the story and meaning of Chapter 8
Ss will be able to tie in Ch 8 with the story so far
Sources of Evidence:
Ss will show an understanding of the themes in the book by coming up with a plausible Ch
8.
Ss will show an understanding of Ch 1-7, by discussing it, acting it out, etc.
Resources, Materials, and Preparation:
Chapter 8 vocabulary worksheet
Chapter 8 overview worksheet
T will have extra copies of the book on hand for Ss who may have forgotten theirs
Lesson Development
Introduction: (5 minutes)
T and Ss will review what happened in the book so far (Ch. 1-7). This will allow every S
a chance to recap the events, as well as accommodate Ss who may not have read all of
the book to be up to date.
Teaching/Learning Sequence: (50 minutes)
T will ask Ss to guess what will happen in Chapter 8. Ss will be asked to work in groups
of 4 or 5. They will have 10 minutes to come up with a way to represent what they think
will happen in Chapter 8, and then another 10 minutes for them to present it to the class.
The representations can take any form they like: Writing a paragraph or two, acting it
out, singing, drawing, etc. (20 minutes)

T will give Ss a vocabulary worksheet for some of the words they may find difficult in
this chapter. Ss will be able to work in pairs to come up with sentences containing the
words. T and Ss will go through the list, choosing Ss' sentences to illustrate the words.
(10 minutes)
T and Ss will read Chapter 8 together. To make it more interesting, T and volunteer Ss
will pick parts which they will read, thus giving different characters unique voices. The
rest of the Ss will read along. (15 minutes)
T and Ss will discuss Chapter 8. During this, they will:
Discuss what was different and similar from what they predicted
What new information they've found out about the characters (Here, Ss can add to
their ongoing Character Inventory lists).
Ask Ss why they made the predictions they did (5 minutes)
T will hand out a Chapter 8 worksheet. If there is still time in class, Ss can start
working on it, and enlist the T's help, if needed. If there is no time, it will be
assigned as homework.
Closure:
T will thank Ss for their cooperation and hard work. T will give Ss a quick outline of the
next day's lesson and, as a Ticket Out The Door activity, ask them to say one line from
Chapter 8 in the voice of the character. (5 minutes)
Accommodations:
Ss who have not read the book so far will be accommodated by the class reviewing Ch. 1-7
in the beginning of the class
Ss who may be having difficulty with the vocabulary words are accommodated by
providing a variety of words. Some words are simple enough that most Ss should have no
problems with it.
Ss who may not feel confident performing in front of the class don't have to. These Ss can
provide the ideas or even simply be the recorder of the group as they work on their project
Ss who feel like they want to participate more can volunteer for reading the chapter. They
can also help other Ss with the vocabulary worksheet
