Welcome one and all!

Im Mr. Babich, and for the next school year, I am your History teacher.
Together, we will traverse the seas of time to take an in depth look at the people,
places, and events from the past that led to the world we know today. By the end of
this course, I hope youll have a stronger appreciation for the history that led us to
our modern world.
This course is World History I which will cover the major historical events from
pre-history until 1800. The curriculum starts with prehistory, before written records
existed, then moves onto the first five successful agricultural civilizations, and ends
with the immediate precursor to our modern world. Throughout the course, youll
bear witness to humanities greatest empires and most isolated peoples. You will be
able to analyze historys greatest failures, to learn the lessons those failures offer,
and celebrate civilizations greatest achievements. Moreover this will all be done
through a craftsmans lens.
Since 2005, Ive been a blacksmith and welder which gives me a very unique
perspective on history and a rare opportunity to teach the subject like few can. Ive
had the opportunity to replicate tools, equipment, and technologies from all periods
in history using entirely traditional and modern techniques. In order to effectively
and accurately create these replicas, I had to do large amounts of research about
the culture that originally created the piece and how they made it. Somewhere in
the process of research and fabrication, I gained a deep appreciation and
admiration for the history and culture involved with the pieces. Its this same
admiration for history that led me to becoming a teacher which in turn, led me to
where we are today.
This course requires minimal materials; all you need to have is a 3 subject
notebook, a folder for handouts, and a writing utensil. All other materials will be
supplied by either the school or me. Generally I do not assign homework. Youll only
have homework if the classwork takes you extra time. Classwork will relate to the
lecture and presentation topics for that day
During the year, I typically take the students on three field trips pending
approval. This is so you can learn about a cultures history from other professionals
in the field and get an up close glimpse at several artifacts. In past years, weve
gone to the Museum of Cultural History for their many excellent showcases, the
Museum of Natural History to learn the impact our environment plays on societal
development, and a third one to be determined during the year.
If you have any questions or concerns please, feel free to contact me. Once
again, welcome to World History I; Im looking forward to meeting you all. I know we
can make this year one for the history books!
Sincerely,
Mr. Bret Babich
