DIfferent forms of Narasimha

There are more than 70 kinds of Narasimha mentioned in the Vihendra Samhita. The
classification is mainly based on the different weapons held. Only few are in worship right now. I
will make an attempt to describe the different kinds of Narasimha. Broadly, Narasimha can be
classified along Kevala Narasimha or the bening form and Sthauna Narasimha or the terrific
form. Below are a few popular forms (not an exhaustive list)
Varaha Narasimha: The lord is a combination of both the Saumya Varaha form and the terrific
Ugra form. He has 8 hands all holding discus. He is invoked in this form to win over kingdoms,
property. Simhachalam represents this form even though he does not have 8 hands there.
Puccha narasimha: The lord is depicted as being in red clour with blood shot eyes. He is
lashing his tail (puccha) against the ground and ready to destroy creation during pralaya.
Pancha mukha or Meru narasimha (Isvara Samhita): He has 4 heads along four different
directions and one head at the top which shines as a blazing fire. He has 10 hands and his each
face shines like the moon, sun, collyrium (black kajal) and a gold lusture. His hands carry the
rosary, mace, lotus, conch, bow, plough, discus, arrow, abhaya mudra and a sword. This form
provides one relief against diseases.
Patala Narasimha: Narasimha is seated with the left knee is raised and right leg is placed on
Garuda. Garuda is four armed with two hands in prayer and other two carry Adisesha. He has 8
hands, right shows a gesture of protection while the other four hold different weapons. He is
invoked to get hidden objects underground.
Sixteen armed Narasimha: He typically holds the discus, sword, axe, spear, arrow, goad and
vajra in his right hand while he holds conch, shield, mace, shakthi , bow, noose and club in other
hand. Variants of the positions of these weapons may exist. He is typically standing.
Hiranyakashipu is not included and sometimes, he has three eyes and red dishelved hair. The

temple in Pondicherry resembles this form.

Eight Armed Narasimha: This form appears in the matsya purana and includes Hiranyakashipu.
2 hands hold the intestines of Hiranyakashipu, 2 hands are tearing the demons body while
others carry discus, lotus, mace and conch.
Sudarshana Narasimha: He is seated on a serpant (signyfing Kundalaini shakti) and all hands
carry discus. He is behind Sudarshana (who is in the middle of a hexagon). See my old posting
on the link between the two forms (http://narayandasan.wordpress.com/2011/01/22/sudarshanaor-this-universe-aform-of-lakshmi-narasimha/).
Chattravata Narasimha: Adisesha serves as an umbrella for the lord.
Yoga Narasimha: In yogic posture with a band across the knees.
Gandaberunda Narasimha: He is in the form of a bird form vanquishing Sarabha. He may also
have eight faces. He sometimes has 8 heads representing Monkey or Vanara, Varaha or Boar,
Baluka or Bear, horse faced, garuda or eagle faced, vyagra or tiger faced, mrigaraja or lion faced
and pakshi or bird faced. Worship of each face grants one with the appropriate siddhis. This is
by far the most ugra form of the lord.
Saumya Narasimha: This is a variant of the Lakshmi Narasimha form. Here both his consorts,
Lakshmi and Bhu Devi are present with him. He is supposed to be extremely pleasant,
bedecked with documents. He has 3 eyes and is visualized as white in color and brilliant like the
sun. In a place called Avaniapuram, Narasimha is along with Simhamukhi Lakshmi. Here his
consort, Lakshmi too has a lion face.
Nava Vyuha narasimha: Here worship is done in the form of nava murthis. This is done for
protection against abhichara or for destroying enemies.
Hayagriva Narasimha: Have seen it only once used in homams. Maybe invoked for knowledge.
Not much is known of this forms
Other forms include, Chakra Narasimha (only discus), Pancha tatva Narasimha as Prithvi
Narasimha, Vayu Narasimha, Jwala Narasimha, Vayu Narasimha, Jalana Narasimha, Akasha
Narasimha. We can see these five forms at Vedadri.
Worship is done in different forms and different mantras are used depending on the wishes of
the devotee. Some popular ones include (I will be posting the dhyana shlokams for each form)
