Speech on the North Carolina House Bill 2

By: Alyssa Moss (Frederick Douglass POV)

Speech to those in favor of the Bill and N.C. Governor McCrory
Discrimination. Something far from unfamiliar to I. Who is to determine what rights one
has? According to the Declaration of Independence, we all have an UNALIENABLE right to the
pursuit of happiness, and if identifying as another sex is what makes us who we are and what
makes life enjoyable then let it be. Why is one not entitled to live life the way they please?
Especially, over something as minor as a bathroom. I speak for those afraid. I represent their
fight for equality and support their decisions. The purpose of life is happiness above all else, in
which the transgender community is being deprived of. Through the North Carolina House Bill
2, transgenders are being deprived of respect, dignity, and equal access to public facilities.1
Not only are they being deprived, but they are being shown disrespect. For example, they are not
just being shown abuse verbally but physically. How can one lay a finger on someone for living
their life? If they arent a bother, why do you have to be a bother to them? Saying transgender
men are facing harassment and violence from those who correctly perceive that they are a man
using facilities designated for women is just like saying I was abused because I was correctly
perceived as an animal. IT IS UNACCEPTABLE!!! WE ARE ALL THE SAME. We all
function the same despite color or gender. Take into account how YOU would feel. Take a
moment and take a step into the shoes of the discriminated.
Isnt enjoyable? Indeed, it isnt. Why would you want to make one feel that way? Not
only is this a social conflict but religious, as well. Lets take into account treat others the way
you want to be treated. Just as many want to bring up how God made you the way he intended,
let it be. Hypocrisy is a large characteristic in this issue. Let us take into account the law that
prohibits discrimination based upon sexual orientation or gender identity and how challengers do
not want to block this part of the law. In this, challengers are being hypocritical. The challengers,
they argued, "seek to overturn millennia of accepted practice by which men and women utilize
separate facilities for using the restroom, bathing and changing clothes.. The challengers were
not asking the judge to block enforcement of the other part of the law, which prohibits local

governments in North Carolina from adopting ordinances that outlaw discrimination based on
sexual orientation or gender identity.2
Again I say, overturn this bill for it is unjust. It is unjust in the fact that it contradicts
religious concepts and moral values. It abolishes those very values in which we have developed
as a nation in terms of equality. It clashes with laws that have been set forth and is overall
hypocritical.
