Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,
SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE
This act may be cited as the Food Labeling Act of 2016.
SECTION 2. FINDINGS
Congress hereby finds and declares that,
There are generally multiple servings in one package of food, which would double or triple the calories, nutrient
numbers, and %Daily Values.
Most Americans consume too many calories and not enough nutrients from the foods they eat.
Americans consume an excessive and unhealthy amount of sodium, added sugars, trans fats, saturated fats, and
calories.
Excessive sodium intake is linked to high blood pressure, stroke, and cardiovascular disease while high trans and
saturated fat intake is linked to coronary heart disease.
Portion distortion has occurred over the last 20 years leading to standard portion sizes that could actually feed two or
three people.
Genetically modified foods may have toxic effects on bodily organs particularly in the pancreatic, renal, and
reproductive systems.
Obesity is Americas largest public health concern and puts Americans at risk for cardiovascular disease.
Most fast foods lack the complex carbohydrates that lower cholesterol levels, improve digestion, and reduce
cardiovascular disease.
Eating certain types of food is associate with asthma, rhinitis, and eczema.
Fast food is high in fat and sugar, which leads to weight gain and the development of chronic disease
Raw shellfish, undercooked or raw fish, poultry, and smoked seafood may contain parasites, bacteria, Vibrio bacteria,
or mercury.
The use of pesticides in cultivating food crops has been linked to the growing numbers of 8-15 year olds with ADD
or ADHD.
Nearly all overweight people, including 70% of all American adults, have pre-diabetes, which could result in
disease or even death.
3,000 Americans die every year due to a foodborne disease from bacteria on food products.
SECTION 3. STATUTORY LANGUAGE
A) The Food Labeling Act of 2016 shall require a standardized serving size for all packaged foods and standardized
system of labeling all foods considered hazardous to health. This includes any food item that endangers the consumer
or puts them at any health risk. Foods that are known to cause cancer, diabetes, obesity, etc. will be given the
appropriate labels. Any food item that contains an unhealthy amount of sodium, fat, sugar, or calories will be labeled
as such.
B) The Food & Drug Administration shall be responsible for creating and enforcing the standardized system. This
system will include categories of portion size, living conditions of livestock, genetically modified foods, and
warnings regarding health. The Food & Drug Administration will decide the amount of sodium, fat, sugar, and
calories deemed unhealthy and give the appropriate title for such a label. All companies not following the
standardized system shall be fined 50% of all revenue from the food item in question.
C) The Food Labeling Act of 2016 shall be enacted on January 1, 2018. There is no expiration date for this bill.
