Technical
Information
TITLE:

Effects of the amounts of zinc oxide and magnesium oxide on

the properties of compounds and vulcanizates based on
Baypren 210

TEXT:
Note: Some

products used in this study are no longer

available. Nevertheless, the results are, in general, still of
interest. The formulations given in this Technical
Information have not been amended but recommended
alternatives from the current range of Bayer products are
provided. For polymer-bound chemicals, the active
substance content should be taken into account.

This Technical Information investigates how

the proportions of metallic oxides influence
the
properties
of
compounds
and
vulcanizates based on Baypren 210. A
similar study for Baypren 610 (1) is published
as Technical Information/tib FK-0163 (1)

1. Introduction

2. Test procedure

Sulfur-modified
polychloroprene,
e. g.
Baypren 510 and 611, can be cured with
zinc oxide and magnesium oxide alone. The
regular and precrosslinked grades, which
are often referred to as mercaptan-modified
grades, need organic accelerators in
addition to zinc oxide and magnesium
oxide. In spite of this, the proportions of zinc
oxide and magnesium oxide also have
important effects on the properties of
compounds and vulcanizates based on
these grades

A formulation containing N 762 black and

based on ISO 2475 (see Table 1) was used
for the tests.
The proportions of magnesium oxide [1] and
zinc oxide were chosen to permit regression
analysis of the results by computer.
The compounds were vulcanized in a
curemeter (Bayer-Frank Vulkameter (2))
and in ordinary presses at 150 C.

Technical
Information

The following influences were nevertheless

clearly seen:

3. Results
Owing to the presence of ethylene thiourea
(Vulkacit NPV/C (3)), the effects of the
metallic oxides were found to be less strong
than
in
compounds
based
on
Baypren 610 (1) in which these oxides are
not supplemented by an accelerator (1).

3.1 Influence of the metallic oxides on

the cure
A medium to large amount of magnesium
oxide is needed if the compound is to have
the best possible storage stability (Table 2).

The incubation time and cure time at 150 C

are determined mainly by the zinc oxide.
They decrease as the amount of zinc oxide
rises. (See Figures 2a and 2b).
The rate of cure (indicated by the steepness
of the curemeter curve) and especially the
crosslink density (indicated by the shear
force exerted by the curemeter) depend
substantially on both metallic oxides (see
Figures 1 and 2c).

favorable (see Figures 2c and 3c).
3.2 Influence of the metallic oxides on
the vulcanizate properties

a)

As Figures 3 and 4 show, the tensile

strength, elongation at break, modulus,
hardness and compression set depend both
on the amount of magnesium oxide and on
the amount of zinc oxide.

In the absence of metallic oxides, or when

magnesium oxide is used alone, the
curemeter curve remains flat and the
crosslink density low. Although the rate of
cure is increased, the crosslink density
remains low when zinc oxide is used by
itself. A large total proportion of metallic
oxides leads to high crosslink density. A

The hot air resistance at 125 C likewise
depends on the amounts of both metallic
oxides (Figures 5 and 6).

Fig. 6: Relative residual elongation at break

D/D0 x 100 (%) after aging in hot air at
125 C for three days
For the best hot air resistance, a large
amount of zinc oxide should be used.
Swelling in water at 100 C is least
pronounced when a large total amount of
metallic oxides is used (Figure 7).
