Product Description: C-Series ball valves: Floating ball valves for isolation
Description
LR have been commissioned to verify the Safety Integrity Level (SIL) of the C-Series ball valves (floating ball valves for isolation) on
behalf of the client, MOGAS Industries Inc. As part of this work, the following information has been reviewed:
o
Product description, components, functions and mode of operation;
o
Identification of critical components, component failure modes and failure rates;
o
Calculated failure rates, test intervals, etc;
o
Proof test coverages, common cause failures and any other assumptions made; and,
o
Requirements for hardware random integrity (Probability of Failure on Demand [PFD]), architectural constraints (Hardware
Fault Tolerance [HFT]) and Systematic Capability (SC).
Conclusion
The result of the assessment against the requirements of IEC 611508 - Parts 1 and 2 is that MOGAS C-Series ball valves are suitable
for use in applications of up to SIL 2 based on systematic integrity and architectural constraints for HFT = 0 (Route 2H).
o
The dangerous undetected failure rate for C-series valves used in low demand mode, and in a close on a demand function,
is 5.07E-07 failures per hour.
o
The dangerous undetected failure rate for C-series valves used in low demand mode, and in a close on a demand function
requiring tight shut off, is 5.83E-07 failures per hour.
o
The dangerous undetected failure rate for C-series valves used in low demand mode, and in an open on a demand function
is 4.32E-07 failures per hour.
Exclusions
Other verification activities such as verifyng response time, spurious trip rate, or compliance with other codes and standatds (API RP
14C, ISO 10418, etc.) are excluded from the scope of work
C-series ball valves are assessed to be type A components, so verification of software requirements for SIL is outside the scope of
work
SIL capability due to random hardware failures should be determined at a function level by end users
