Western Piedmont
Symphony
Western Piedmont Symphonys mission is to
provide musical performances of distinction that
enrich and enliven the communitys classical music
experience; and to nourish new audiences through
school concerts and family outreach programs.
For 52 years, theyve accomplished this by offering
a diverse selection of programming with wide
appeal. The Masterworks concerts are high-caliber
performances that feature top-quality musicians.
The way we experience music is more personal
and portable, Executive Director of Western
Piedmont Symphony Ingrid Keller said.
The pops concerts Under the Sails on Union
Square are free, fun and family-friendly events that
draw a big crowd. The Chamber Classics series
showcases our Hickory Metro Resident Quartet,
currently Tesla. Soup, Salad and Strings is a lunchtime series called that offers an intimate day-time
concert experience with the quartet. Additionally,
the quartet and other symphony musicians can
be seen on outreach performances and pop-up
concerts throughout the Hickory metro region.
Its an exciting time to be an arts organization
in Hickory, North Carolina. Our leaders are moving
forward with changes that will make our community
a better place to live, Keller said.
They are welcoming more diversity, the way
that we value our time, money and possessions is
changing, we are in a state of flux, which gives rise
to creativity and opportunities for positive change,

9.25.2016

the music landscape is also changing, especially that of the

symphony orchestra, and audience expectations and habits
are more unpredictable.
Many symphonies struggle to adapt to these changes
but ultimately what has not changed is live performance,
Keller said. A large group of musicians coming for the
sheer purpose of creating beautiful music is an unparalleled
experience.

Hickory Area Breweries

In the Hickory area, a few breweries to check out are Olde
Hickory Brewery with three locations, American Honor Ale
House, Granite Falls Brewing Company, and Fonta Flora
Brewery.
Olde Hickory Brewery sells beer at three locations: The
Olde Hickory Station, a restaurant and bar with 50 beers on
tap; Amos Howards, the original brewery location that turned
into a restaurant with beer and wine; and the Olde Hickory
Taproom, a restaurant and bar with live music Saturdays and
Sundays.
The Station is more experimental, Nicole Wuest, taproom
manager, said. They have more in depth menus.
American Honor Ale House is a part of the Blowing Rock
Brewing Company.
This state-of-the-art brewery enables us to better distribute
our brews to retailers and restaurants statewide. The brewery
is designed to specialize in the crafting of our flagship Legacy
Series that includes Blowing Rock High Country Ale, Blowing
Rock IPA, and our four rotating Blowing Rock seasonal beers.
Granite Falls Brewing Company right next door to Hickory
encourages customers to Live Hoppier, Live Happier.
Whether a classic American IPA or Imperial Stout, a
traditionally brewed German-style Hefeweizen or Berliner
Weisse, or a pioneering American Wild Ale fermented with
Appalachian fruits and spices and aged in French wine barrels,
GFB conspires to produce exceptional ales and lagers sure to
please any palate.
Fonta Flora Brewery uses all local sources to create their
beer. They farm and gather themselves.
Thats our draw, Manager Sara Maya said. Our main
thing is local agriculture.
Since they rely on seasonal fruits, their beers change weekly.
I love everything, its a great environment, Maya said. It
has a chill atmosphere, its really fun.

Wineries
In the Hickory surrounding area, a few wineries
are Shadow Line Vineyard, Six Waterpots Vineyard
and Winery, Woodmill Winery, and Southern Charm
Winery.
Shadow Line Vineyard opened early this year by
Marvin and Geba Davenport on their land.
Marvin Davenport said the business-end of the
winery was something Geba Davenport remains
passionate about. For him, getting into the
wine business was because the growing of vines
fascinates him.
Its a nice place to relax and enjoy wine and
company with your friends, Marvin Davenport
said.
Nestled in the shadows of the Southern
Appalachian Mountains, WoodMill Winery is
surrounded by the natural beauty, tranquility,
and charm of the rolling foothills of Vale, North
Carolina.

Southern Charm Winery

After seeing the difference in my Dads health

from drinking Muscadine wine, I started the winery
to promote the health benefits to the surrounding
community, Owner Larry Cagle said.
WoodMill Winery wines are made from 100% sun
ripened Muscadines, Scuppernongs, Blueberries
and Blackberries. Each bottle of wine contains the
essence of these magnificent fruits, fermented
without diluting, to create the ultimate hearthealthy beverage. It is like drinking pure fruit!
Six Waterpots Vineyard and Winery invites you to
come to the beautiful foothills of North Carolinas
Blue Ridge Mountains and enjoy a wine-tasting, art
and wine experience, or special events with them.
Six Waterpots Winery offers hand-crafted
wines from our homegrown muscadine varietals:
Supreme, Noble, Carlos, Magnolia, and Tara.
Southern Charm Winery has 23 different wines,
both red and white and sweet and dry. Their best
seller is the Edsto Black made with blackberries.
My favorite part is the customers, Owner
Carolyn Ramseur said. They are happy when they
come in and happier when they leave.
Ramseurs husband is the venter, wine maker. He
made wine as a hobby and then they opened up
the winery.
Twisted Vine Winery owner Tom Bradshaw has delt with heat in
his career as a fire investigator. Now Bradshaw makes wine out of
jalapeno peppers called Southern Heat.

Antique Vending
Company Museum
Antique Vending Company Museums goal was to
operate a fleet of vintage soda machines 30 to 50
years old and only sell glass bottle products.
They were able to locate a few really nice
antique machine parts suppliers, however in 1989
these suppliers only produced parts for the more
collectable or more popular antique soda machines.
There were several parts that the vending company
constantly needed and reproductions were not
available.
Antiquities Vending Company paired up with
three local machine shops to produce everything
from Jacobs 26 drums to Vendo rack S cams. These
machine shops have reproduced everything from
Cavalier 51 rollers to Deep Freeze, Westinghouse
and General Electric tank liners.
Antiquities Vending Company preserves in house
the largest most complete collection of antique
vendors in the world today. Anytime they need a
part for an antique soda machine, they have one on
hand for our machine shop to copy.
They are your one stop for glass bottle soda pop,
stocking over 40 different flavors of glass bottle soda
today. They are your source for restored antique
vending machines of all brands and models. If they
dont have it, they will help you find it.

They are the only company that both specializes in

restoring vintage refrigeration equipment and devotes our
entire facility to restoring only vintage equipment. They are
your restoration specialists for your machine as well as your
machines refrigeration system.
Their entire current customer base was established through
good old-fashioned word of mouth. We prefer to deal
individually with each and every customer directly.

Catawba Valley
Furniture Museum
The Catawba Valley Furniture Museum is located on
Level 1 at the west entrance of the Hickory Furniture Mart
and is a window into the history of the furniture industry in
the region.
There are historical furniture displays, which include some
of the areas first pieces of furniture produced. Visitors can
trace the roots of the furniture industry in the Catawba
Valley. There also is a display of tools used by early furniture
makers and a family tree of famous name brand furniture
manufacturers from this area.
Hickory can trace its furniture history back to the earliest
part of the 20th century and a young merchant named
George W. Hall, according to the Hickory Furniture Mart
website. The natural trade routes along the rivers in the
region provided an artery by which both designers and
craftsmen flowed into the Catawba Valley region in the early
20th century. By the 1920s and 1930s, more furniture plants

were forming as the industry spread throughout

Hickory and the surrounding areas.
In 1960, a second industry arose to support
the growing furniture industry when furniture
manufacturers gathered for the first time to display
their products to retail dealers. This wholesale
exhibition was held on the site of what is now the
Hickory Furniture Mart.
In 1985, exhibition decided to open its doors previously open only to wholesale members of the
trade - to the public for the very first time.
Hickory Furniture Marts expansive complex is
comprised of four-levels housing 100 factory outlets,
stores, and galleries, representing nearly 1,000
popular brand names in the furniture industry.

Bunker Hill Bridge

One of only two original remaining covered bridges
in North Carolina, the Bunker Hill Covered Bridge was
built in 1895 by Andy L. Ramsour. Catawba County
Commissioners in 1894 had called on nearby owners
of Bunker Hill Farm to build and maintain a bridge that
would cross Lyles Creek on the old Island Ford Road,
a former Native American trail.
For anyone interested in engineering, historic
structures, or beautiful scenery, the Bunker Hill
Covered Bridge at Connor Park is a local treasure
and National Engineering Landmark, Jennifer Toney
said. Recreation enthusiasts will enjoy the growing
trail system and families are welcome to bring along a
picnic any day of the week!
Designated as a National Civil Engineering
Landmark in 2001, the Bunker Hill Covered Bridge is
the only remaining example in wood of the Improved
Lattice Truss patented by General Herman Haupt.
The Bunker Hill Covered Bridge is the last historic
covered bridge on its original road bed in North
Carolina, Toney said.

9.25.2016

Originally constructed as an open span, the Bunker Hill

Covered Bridge, whose roof is ninety-one feet long, was
covered in 1900. In 1921 its wooden shingles were replaced
with a tin roof. Bridges were covered to protect their timbers
from the elements.
Bolick Family members donated the bridge in 1985 to
the Catawba County Historical Association, which restored
it in 1994 with the expertise of Arnold M. Graton, a master
bridgewright from Ashland, New Hampshire.
Bunker Hill Covered Bridge is the open daily from dawn
until dusk and has picnic tables, paved parking and some
walking paths in the surrounding area.

The Hickory Museum of Art has been bringing some
of the biggest names regionally and nationally in the
world of art to Catawba County since 1944.

Today that number has blossomed to approximately
1,500 art objects in the collection.

Paintings from artists such as Thomas Cole, William
Stanley Haseltine and Samuel Colman; the Southern
Contemporary Folk Art exhibit, more than 250
holdings in Southern regional self-taught art.
There is also an interactive exhibition space for
folk art. It includes: re-creations of artists working
environments, touch screens, more than 200 folk art
objects, sounds and smells and family activity stations.
Free Family Guides for the exhibition are available

the world of art to children of all ages. It hosts youth classes,
summer camps, teen and adult classes. Birthday parties, tours
and field trips are also hosted by the museum.
The Hickory Art Museum is also co-hosts the annual
Foothills Folk Art Festival, highlighted by local and regional

According to its website, Carolina Theater was built in
the summer/fall of 1934 but was not officially in business
until Christmas Eve of the same year opening as a live stage
or motion picture theater. The structure had state of the art
sound projectors with a seating capacity of 746, 460 on the
main floor and 243 in the balcony with 43 seats available for
black patrons.
The theater also offered new air conditioning with two
25-ton units new at this time. The structure was built by Carl
V. Cline and then was leased to John F. Miller, President of
Hickory Amusement Company until 1945. After the death of
Carl Cline, his estate sold the property to family members
forming Cline Realty which included several other properties,
who, in turn leased the theater to Colonial Theaters of
Valdese around 1947, according to its website.

coming together to enjoy a night out is important to
everyone, according to its website

Moretz Stadium has been home to the LenoirRhyne Football program since the early 1920s. The

it also shared time with the baseball program

major renovations were given to Moretz Stadium,
according to the program website.
Lenoir-Rhyne University will enter the 2016 season
with a new face and offense leading the way for

Hickory Community
Theatre
The Hickory Community Theatre was first visualized in 1947
when a planning group met in the apartment of Buddy Deal,
a part-time college student and touring actor, according to
the theatres website.
The institution was then named The Hickory Little Theatre
and the first live performance was set for May 24, 1949, in
the Hickory City Auditorium. The production was composed
of three one-act plays including The Enchanted Night, The
Valiant and Curse You, Jack Dalton. Since then, the theatre
has undergone various improvements over the years, most
recently in 2013, when the theatre began its two-year process
of updating its current facilities. Thanks to a capital campaign
that raised about $1.2 million, the theatre looks forward to
seeing the completion of improvements being made to the
mainstage, bathrooms, box office and Firemans Kitchen.

Murrays Mill
Learn about how grain was milled at the turn of the
20th century at the historical Murrays Mill, located at
1489 Murrays Mill Road in Catawba.
The Historical Association of Catawba County
maintains the site, which includes a 1890s general
store and a 1880s wheathouse. Visitors can tour the
site Thursday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.,
and Sunday from 1-5 p.m., according to the Murrays
Mill website.
The sites main attraction is the 1913 mill. Restoration
began on the mill in 1980 and the site opened to the
public in 1988.
At the mill, visitors can find the original owners oneton millstones and see the mills 28-foot waterwheel.
The Murray family operated the mill from 1883 to
1967.
The Murray family home is also on site, fully restored
and furnished, as it would have been when originally

constructed in 1912. Inside the home, visitors can see how

the Murray family might have lived when they occupied the
home. The home is only open during special events, such
as the Harvest Folk Festival, which occurs during the last
weekend in September.
The wheathouse and the general store now act as galleries.
In the general store, visitors can view vintage products,
including wooden toys. At the wheathouse, there are exhibits
of the architectural work of C.H. Lester and of folk art.
Admission to the site costs $5 per person or $6 for a
guided tour. The association recommends appointments for
groups of 10 or more.

SE Narrow Gauge &

Shortline Museum

All aboard for history at the Southeastern Narrow Gauge

and Shortline museum, located at the Historic Newton Depot
on North Main Avenue. The museum opens twice a month
on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month from 10
a.m. to 1 p.m., according to the City of Newtons website.
The museums website states that the museum features
several restored boxcars and a 1922 Mogul locomotive, as
well as other rare artifacts.

HickoryRecord.com

99 Things To Do In 99 Miles

Narrow gauge, as explained by the museum, refers to the

distance between the rails on a track. Standard gauge rails
are 4 feet and 8.5 inches apart, and are widely used in the
U.S. Narrow gauge is any distance less than standard.
The use of narrow gauge started in the 1870s with the
intent of saving on construction. By the 1940s, narrow gauge
was almost completely gone.
Another item in the museums collection is a restored
railbus, which was used in the 1920s to transport work
crews. The museum hopes to restore the railbus to an
operational capacity.
Groups can rent the depot for $30 for the first hour and
$10 for each additional hour. The site includes a kitchen
facility and room for up to 60 people. Dancing and balloons
are not allowed.
Individuals and groups interested in a guided tour of the
museum can call Tom Warlick at (828) 464-3930.

Zootastic

Owner of Zootastic Park of Lake Norman Scottie

Brown opened his zoo seven years ago and is
privately owned and operated with no federal or
state funding. Brown and his family have over 30
years of experience with exotic animals.
He personally wanted a giraffe as a pet, but
obviously couldnt do that for more than one reason.
He made his dream come true by opening the zoo.
In a zoo, exotic animals are much more reasonable
and affordable to take care of and own.

EAST OF HICKORY Area

They opened the zoo in 2009 starting with the

Christmas Wonderland of Lights. Brown said they
have the largest Christmas light show in North
Carolina.
They had over one million lights across two miles. It
is now an annual tradition they are very proud of.
The zoo has hands-on experiences where customers
get to interact with several animals. There are 15minute and 60-minute animal encounters.

9.25.2016

We are the most hands on zoo in the U.S., Brown said.

You can get a hug from a giraffe and our baby tigers, you
can feed a bottle.
Zootastic is also very education focused. They take time to
teach fun facts about animals, such as where camels come
from.
Explore the days of the cowboys in their Western Town and
learn about fennec foxes, ferrets, and coatimundi. Continue
through the Barnyard Petting Zoo where you can interact and
learn about and feed the farm animals such as singing dogs,
donkeys, porcupines, and goats.
Zootastic is all about helping animals and others as well. They
support Make-A-Wish Foundation and do whatever they can
to help.

and presenting Iredell County history is evident from its

In 1956, Iredell Museums of Art & Heritage obtained a lease
from an old water pump station which had been replaced,
and would have been destroyed. Over the years, the museum
gathered a diverse collection of art and historical artifacts.
The main site for Iredell County history is the Gregory
Creek Homestead. The site includes a log house, cabin,
smokehouse and other structures from the early history of
Iredell County. This homestead is open for special events
and living history days, in which re-enactors demonstrate
aspects of life in early Iredell County. While the structures
are not open all the time, the nature trail is open year-round
in the vicinity is open year-round and they offer a look at the
wildflowers.
The 134 Court Street site is currently showcasing a 3,000
year old mummy that has been in the museums possession
since 1956. The exhibit, called The Mummy Treasure of
Al Faiyum, includes a larger exploration of life in Egypts

can see hot air balloon competitions, and can book
flights in the balloons also.
Balloons take off in the early morning and late
afternoon. In keeping with festival tradition, there
will be a glow night on Saturday, Oct. 22 in which
the balloons light up. Aside from the balloons, there
are several other sources of entertainment. There
will be a tasting of craft wine and beer, as well as a
chance to peruse the artisan marketplace and take
in live music. Two new features for this years event
are the Kids Art Rally, which provides art lessons for
kids and a scientific demonstration by the Morehead
Planetarium and Science Center.
Entertainment is a major component of Carolina
BalloonFest, but it is far from the only aspect of
the event. National Balloon Rally Charities, the
organization behind the festival, seeks to use
the event as an opportunity to give back to the
community.
A portion of the proceeds raised during BalloonFest
go to various local charities. In 2015, the organization
raised $113,000 for charity, with the American
Cancer Society often being a prominent recipient of
contributions.

Brown Mountain Lights

Phenomena or hoax? Decide what the Brown

Mountain Lights near Morganton are for yourself.
First spotted in 1913, viewers describe the lights
as red and circular. Viewers can best see the lights
during September through November.
The City of Morganton, in order to capitalize on the
phenomena, constructed a scenic overlook on N.C.
Highway 181.
Skeptics of the lights say that the lights are due
to automobiles, trains or other mundane sources.
However, the lights proponents say that the nature
of the lights is paranormal.

West OF HICKORY Area

The lights were even featured in a bluegrass song

titled Brown Mountain Lights.
It shines like the crown of an angel, and fades as the
mists come and go, states the songs lyrics.
Several artists, including the Kingston Trio and Roy
Orbison, covered the song.
The website brownmountainlights.com states that
the best times to see the lights are after a rainfall and
if there is smoke in the air, such as from a campfire.
The site describes the lights as self-contained,
concentrated balls of light. It theorizes that the lights
might either be ball lightning, concentrated spheres
of methane or radiation.

Linville Gorge Wilderness Area

Known as the Grand Canyon of the East, Linville Gorge

is known for the myriad of recreational opportunities it has
to offer, particularly hiking and backpacking. As a natural
feature, Linville Gorge is notable as the only gorge of its
depth on the East Coast. The ruggedness of the landscape
means that many of the areas 39 miles of trails are quite
strenuous.
In addition to hiking and backpacking, the park is also good
for mountain climbing in areas. Hunting and fishing are
allowed with permits. Animals in the gorge include Fish in the
gore include brown and rainbow trout. Camping is allowed,
but permits are required for weekends and holidays between
May and October. For those looking for some seclusion, the
Forest Service recommends the southern portion of the trail,
located south of the Conley Cove Trail in the West, and south
of the Chimneys in the east.
Along the various trails, the gorge holds a number of natural
wonders. Linville Falls goes 90 feet in several tiers into the
gorge. The falls can be seen from five different spots on
two trails. Wisemans View is only a short hike, and provides
a view of Table Rock and Hawksbill Mountains. The fabled
Brown Mountain Lights have also been seen from Wisemans
View.

Table Rock and Shortoff Mountains

Table Rock and Shortoff Mountains provide two of the most

rewarding experiences available in Linville Gorge. Both
located on the eastern side of the gorge, each mountain
offers a great view of the gorge and other surrounding
features.
Table Rock derives its name from the distinctive table shape
of the summit, which is visible from many miles around.
To reach the top, hikers and backpackers must go up a
1.2 mile trail that can be strenuous, but ultimately offers
great rewards. The summit of Table Rock Mountain gives a
panoramic view of Linville Gorge and the surrounding Pisgah
National Forest. In addition to hiking for the view, Table Rock
is also known as a great mountain for climbing.
Getting to the top of Shortoff Mountain requires an 8 mile
hike, but the reward is a view of Lake James as well as the
gorge itself.
