Wineology

INTELLIGENCE FOR THE WINE CONSUMER

BY LEN NAPOLITANO

When is it necessary to decant wine?

In the course of going through a bottle of red wineor
sometimes even in the time it takes you to finish one glasshave
you ever noticed the wine improving? Perhaps more aromas are
detected, or the finish lasts longer. Thats because the wine is getting
aerated, also called opening up, and releasing its full potential in
aroma, flavor, and texture.
Decanting is the transfer of a red wine from its bottle into a
new container, either for the purpose of aeration or to separate
wine from its sediment, or sometimes both. For aerating purposes,
decanting hastens the mixture of air and wine, a good idea for some
young aromatic red wines that get more expressive when aerated.
Alternatively, you can also aerate wine by giving it time in the glass
before consuming. The unique shape of a decanterwide at the
bottom, tapering up to a skinny neckallows more rapid aeration
than simply uncorking the bottle. The decanter exposes a large
surface area of wine to air and releases more of the wines fragrant
aromas.
After pouring from bottle to decanter, let the wine stand in
the decanter for at least 20 minutes before pouring the wine into
glasses. Keep in mind, old wines lose their aromatic power quickly,
so decant very old wines minutes, not hours, before serving. If you
wait too long before pouring, you will miss much of the wines
complexity and aromatic detail.
Decanting also separates wine from sediment that forms over
time. Red wines of significant age, and some young ones, may
show black sediment at the bottom of the bottle, or clinging to its
side. It isnt a fault in the wine. Its a natural residue from phenolic
compoundstannin molecules combining with color pigments.
Or, crystal-like particles of sediment, from potassium or calcium

PEACHY
CANYON
WINERY

tartrates, might show up in the bottle. Although, theres no harm

in drinking wine with either sediment, it isnt pleasant. Its worth
taking the extra step to decant in order to enjoy the wine without
the bitterness of sediment.
To decant older wine that contains sediment, first allow the
bottle to stand undisturbed for about 24 hours in advance of
opening, if possible, to allow the solids to settle. Shaking the bottle
before uncorking will stir up sediment and make decanting more
difficult.
To uncork an old vintage, pull the cork gentlydont twist
to avoid breaking it. Then, pour it slowly into a decanter while
simultaneously observing the wine passing through the neck of the
bottle. As soon as sediment is visible through the neck, immediately
stop pouring. To make it easier to see the wine the instant the
particles are visible, place a lit candle under the neck or hold a
flashlight against it, as many sommeliers do. You will likely end up
with a few ounces of wine and sediment remaining in the bottle.
If you prefer to decant every red wine, regardless of age, clarity,
or quality, there is certainly nothing wrong with that. With complex
red wines that feature layers of fruit and receive extended oak aging,
decanting will ensure that you get everything the wine has to offer.
Its a small step that adds big to the enjoyment of wine.

Zaca Mesa Releases New Rhne Wine: Syrah & Cabernet Sauvignon Blend
One of oldest Santa Barbara wineries creates Super Rhne
with 2014 Toyon Syrah-Cabernet red wine blend
Zaca Mesa Winery was the third winery established in Santa
Barbara County, as well as the first in the county to plant Syrah in
1978. Since then, Zaca Mesa has continued to produce distinctive
Rhne wines that consistently receive high scores and praise industry
wide. Since 1997, Zaca Mesa has focused solely on growing worldclass examples of Syrah and other Rhne varieties through meticulous
farming and traditional winemaking techniques.
Now, Zaca Mesa introduces a new bistro-style wine thats
reminiscent of classic blends in Provence, France or Tuscany, Italy.
Blending traditional Rhne varietals with a structural favorite like
Cabernet Sauvignon creates a Super Rhne wine that pairs easily
with food and is utterly delicious.
This kind of elegant table wine rarely makes it out of France,
says Winemaker Kristin Bryden. Its what locals in the region drink
with meals every day.
Just as the Super Tuscan wines have garnered praise for their
complexity and drinkability, this Super Rhne is perfect for large
meals and is ready to drink. Kristen says We wanted to make
our own silky, fruit-driven blend that could be enjoyed by folks
immediately, with all kinds of foods.
The wines red and black fruit flavors, complex structure and silky

tannins come from Zaca Mesa Vineyard Syrah, Mourvdre, Grenache

and Cinsault, less than 30 miles from the Pacific Ocean (Californias
Rhne Zone) and Cabernet Sauvignon from Happy Canyon AVA,
where warmer weather is ideal for Bordeaux grapes.
The name Toyon is derived from a native shrub found growing in
the sandy hills and terraces that make up the estate vineyard, and has
been a historic term for blends at the winery. Today the wine is made
from a combination of grape varietals grown on and off the estate for
optimum balance.
The 2014 Toyon blends fruit-driven aromas and flavors deliver a
beautiful array of red and black fruitscharacteristic of both Rhne
and Bordeaux grapesalong with soft, plush tannins. Its available
November 12 to purchase via wine club from the winery.
About Zaca Mesa:
Zaca Mesa Winery, located in the Santa Ynez Valley of Santa
Barbara County, California, is dedicated to estate grown and bottled
Rhne varietal wines. They craft wines with integrity using traditional
methods from grapes sustainably grown in their Santa Barbara
County vineyard. Since 1973, they have farmed and nurtured their
vineyard to produce wines that are true to the unique spirit of their
land. Still family-owned, Zaca Mesa brings old-world Syrah heritage
to the Santa Ynez Valley. For more information about Zaca Mesa

Award-Winning Olive Oils

Nestled in Paso Robles wine country, Pasolivo has been creating
world-class olive oil since 2000, providing customers with the best
tasting, freshest and highest quality California olive oil. With all
production done on property, Pasolivo is situated amongst towering
oaks, flocks of wild turkeys and deer, and warm hospitality. With
over 6500 olive trees, the sustainably farmed California olives are
handpicked at their prime, and then pressed within hours at their
on-site olive mill.
Modeling the Mediterranean climate of Spain and Italy, Paso
Robles offers the perfect terrain and weather for growing olives, with
a combination of temperate coastal weather and rich, fertile soil.
Producing extra virgin olive oil, each bottle has a seal that indicates
harvest date, with a shelf life of two years (8-12 months once
opened). Purchased in 2012 by the Dirk family, guests are invited to
grab a picnic table, a bottle of wine, and savor the tranquility.

Healthy Living & Culinary Uses

The benefits of premium extra virgin olive oil are endless, from
decreasing the risk of heart disease and strokes to its moisturizing
and rejuvenating benefits. Handcrafting the healthiest olive oil
possible, Pasolivo olive oil is rich in antioxidant content, with the
hallmark grassiness and pungency of true extra virgin olive oil. A
delicious addition to any meal, the naturally occurring polyphenols
are heart-healthy for every diet.
Pasolivo has created unique and bold flavored blends,
incorporating real herbs and fruit, with no artificial flavorings or
preservatives. Inspired by Chef Elizabeth Whitt, Pasolivo offers

14

a wide array of recipes for the culinary consumer. Winning the

2016 Best In Class and Gold award for the Basil Olive Oil, their
Basil Olive Oil is blended with 400 pounds of fresh basil per ton of
olives. Subtle and sweet, the olive oil has a grassy, peppery finish,
perfect for pairing with salads, pasta or grilled meat. Combine with
the Blackberry Balsamic Vinegar for a winning combo.

Chef Inspired Gifts & Artisan Products

In addition to their award-winning olive oils, Pasolivo has a wide
selection of artisanal foods and beauty products, partnering with
neighboring farmers and small businesses. Reflecting the health
and sustainability of the land, each item is made from all-natural
and organic ingredients, many local to the Paso Robles area. For the
bathroom, make sure to try one of the beautifully rustic olive oil
bar soaps or their signature lathering olive oil hand soap. For the
kitchen, guests can sample salts, herb and spice blends, vinegars,
mustards, jams and more. From fresh tapenades to gourmet salts
and hand-cut pasta, each item pairs beautifully with the flavorful
olive oils.
Press Club members can enjoy priority access to limited
edition products, invitations to members-only events, 15% off
all purchased in store or online products, all direct to their door.
Members will receive three shipments per year in March, June and
September (with access to a special December holiday shipment).
Each shipment includes two signature olive oils, a hand-selected
item and complimentary chef recipes, all fully customizable.

The Los Head
Olivos Tasting Room
& Wine Shop
Chris Benzinger, owner, tasting room attendant, and employee
of The Los Olivos Tasting Room has been serving up Central
Coast wines, focusing on Pinot Noir, for 30 years. Being the first
independent tasting room in Los Olivos, Chris has been passionate
about Pinot Noir from way before it became a cult varietal about
10 years ago.

The tasting menu varies as does the inventory. For $10 you will
taste nine individual wines from the Central Coast, most from the
Santa Ynez Valley. Your tasting will end with a unique intriguing
dessert wine. On my visit, Chris concluded my tasting with a Saint
James Raspberry Regaleand I couldnt wait to get home to try it
over vanilla ice cream!

A Personalized Wine Club

Pinot and More

A Different Concept Tasting Room
Dont expect a conventional winery tasting room. This is a
wine shop that offers select tastings; and if its Pinot Noir you want,
along with other central coast limited production wines, you have
come to the right place. At any given time there is upwards of
100 wines (about 85% Pinot Noir) in stock. Many of the wines
Chris stocks are from wineries that dont have tasting rooms, and
with such limited production, they are extremely hard to procure.
Dont be surprised to see labels such as Saxum, Alban, Sea Smoke,
Denner among the many choices. While you sip, Chris will give
you a veritable education on not only Pinot Noir, but the wines,
vineyards, terroir, micro climates and exceptionalism of the Santa
Ynez Valley.
16

Unlike traditional club shipments that have set wines, you select
your customized shipment based on quantity, frequency and price
point. What you receive will depend on Chris current and ever
changing inventory. Wine club members have described receiving
club shipments is like looking forward to opening presents on
Christmas morninga wonderful surprise.

BIEN NACIDO &

SOLOMON HILLS
ESTATE WINES
New Tasting Room
For decades, the highly acclaimed Bien Nacido and Solomon
Hills Vineyards have been a source of quality fruit for such notable
labels as Au Bon Climant, Qupe, Sin Qua Non, Longoria, Hitching
Post and other much-admired wineries. After decades of building
an award winning reputation for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah
and Grenache, Bien Nacido launched their own label several years
ago, and opened a tasting room in the fall of 2015.

New Wine Club

While remaining focused on providing fruit to many of the areas
most prestigious wineries, Bien Nacido has recently launched their
own Bien Nacido-Solomon Hills Estate Wine Club. Being small
production (under 2000 cases), the wine club will fill up quickly,
and requests will then transition to a wait list. Releases will be in
the fall and spring. Membership will offer many special benefits.
In addition to complimentary tastings members will have the
opportunity to set up private tastings with the vineyard manager
or winemaker. An annual summer BBQ is planned, and pick up
parties at the vineyard will offer club members the opportunity to
meet the Miller family and winemaking team. As the Bien Nacido
team gets to personally know the members and their interests, more
specifically focused wine events will be organized.

A Step Above
A forty year commitment to the community and environment
has garnered an unparalleled reputation for Bien Nacido &
Solomon Hills:
Vineyards are SIP certified (learn about SIP Certified
Vineyards, at www.sipcertified.org).
Grapes and produce are farmed, enabling the family to keep
workers employed year round.
Consistent recognition by the wine press: Jeb Dunnick (The
Wine Advocate) recently awarded scores of 90-94 to half a dozen
2013 releases; and Antonio Galloni gave high praise to the 2012
Bien Nacido Syrah (96 points) as well as the 2013 Bien Nacido and
Solomon Hills Chardonnays (both receiving 95 points).

idyllic drive through vineyards and beautiful countryside, guests are welcomed into a
tasting room full of culture and tradition, with an equally present sense of uniqueness
and individuality.

ROBERT HALL WINERY

The Essence of Paso Robles
Robert Hall Winery is proof that hard work, determination and attention to
detail really can make dreams come true. The winery was the vision of Robert
L. Hall, a man who after a successful career dabbling in a number of ventures,
moved to Paso Robles to plant vineyards and produce a nationally distributed
line of food-friendly, age-worthy wines.
The winery sources fruit from 300 acres of estate vines in addition to
purchasing fruit from other quality growers spread across the Paso Robles AVA.
Using 100% Paso Robles grapes, winemaker Don Brady delivers The Essence of
Paso Robles in each one of the varietals and blends produced. He has worked
with the same vineyard blocks for thirteen years and has developed a consistent
house style. The wines are offered at an extremely good value for premium
winethis was one of Roberts missions since he wanted consumers to be able
to enjoy the wine every day with friends and family.

Friends and Family Enjoying Wine Together

The hospitality center and tasting room were also built with a vision of
friends and family enjoying wine together. The many picnic areas offer places
to sit and relax while enjoying the spectacular views of the surrounding, oakstudded vineyards. Ideally suited for events, the winery often hosts winemakers
dinners, port and cigar events and wine club parties.

Guided Cavern Tour, Barrel Tasting

Come visit Robert Hall Winery and take an
educational guided tour of their 19,000 square
foot wine cavern and production facility
(complimentary with tasting). End up in the
tasting room where Robert Hall Winerys goal is
to capture the Essence of Paso Robles in their
wines. Taste their limited production Cavern
Select lineonly available at the tasting room
or on their website.

Wine Tasting and Tours

The winery launched the Cavern Select line three years ago as a direct to consumer
offering of very limited production wines only available in the tasting room, through the
wine club, or on the winerys website. The wine tasting ($10) features the Cavern Select
line predominately in the tasting list. Other wines are available for purchase. Cabernet
Sauvignon is the winerys most widely produced wine, however they make a number of
dry whites, dry reds and dessert wines including several Rhone varietals and blends.
The tasting room staff are extremely knowledgeable and are not only happy to answer
any questions, they will also take you on a tour of the wine cavern and production
facilities. While touring the cavern, guests learn about the various sizes of oak barrels
and how wine is made at Robert Hall Winery. These tours are available every day as a
complimentary perk to make each guests visit special.

Robert Hall Wines & Bocce

Bring your glass outside and play a little bocce.
But beware, this game of leisure is serious fun at
Robert Hall. There are two spectacular regulation
bocce courts in the old world style, with crushed
oyster shells and a layer of oyster shell flour. The
great thing about bocce is that all ages can join
in, so bring the whole family. Call 805.239.1616
ext. 13 to reserve a court or email tastingroom@

Wine of the Month

Each month the winery features a wine as the wine of the month and offers a 10%
discount. The wine of the month for November is Robert Halls Cuve de Robles, a
Rhone-style blend. This wine pairs perfectly with a wide range of food and is an ideal
bottle to bring to Thanksgiving Dinner.
Although Robert died at the age of 85 last year, the winery will continues to operate
following his vision. The dedicated staff, who were proud to have worked with the man
who followed his dreams, are still offering hospitality to guests in the manner Robert
taught them.

STAFFORDS CHOCOLATES
Chocolate Bliss in Los Olivos

Housed in an historic 100 year old water tower, in a town

known primarily for its abundance of wine tasting rooms, sits a
small retail shop on San Marcos Road, and unless you stumble
upon it or are fortunate enough to have had someone recommend
it, you may easily miss it. What a shame that would be! Staffords
Chocolates compliments the boutique wines and fine foods of
this area, offering a delectable (possibly hedonistic) assortment of
gourmet chocolates that will put you into chocolate nirvana.
Since 2011, the Taylor family, Rob, along with his wife Leslee,
children Meredith and Ben and sister Amy Freedman, have faithfully
carried on the legacy of Larry Stafford, who opened his epicurean
chocolate shop in Porterville, in 1987. Committed to offer only the
finest, purest, chocolates to the pleasure seeking chocolate lover, no
effort is spared to offer a first class quality product.

Qualityand Locality
Supporting the local community is of paramount importance.
Wherever possible, fruits, nuts and dairy products are sourced from
small, local growers, farmers, wineries (for the wine infused truffles)
and breweries (for the beer brittle), located in the San Joaquin and
Santa Ynez Valleys. Each chocolate piece is painstakingly hand
dipped, using all natural ingredients with no preservatives. Quality
speaks for itself, in fact, the English Toffee has won the Peoples
Choice award three years running.

Variety-The Chocolate of Life

There is no shortage of variety for the chocolate foodie to choose
from: Nuts and chews, English toffee, almond brittle, beer brittle,
truffles, pecan turtles, sea salt caramels and a variety of specialty
items are only part of the selection. Salivating yet? Because, just
wait until you sink your teeth into a Staffords original Ooey Gooey
bar (from a 100 year old recipe), for the most decadent chocolate
experience you can imagine. Once your sense of sight, smell and
taste is aroused, your only decision will be: What do I buy, and how
much! When in Los Olivos, a visit to Staffords Chocolates is a must!
You can find Staffords Chocolates at 2902 San Marcos Rd.,
Unit D, Los Olivos. They are open daily Monday and Thursday
11am to 4pm, and weekends 11am to 5pm. For more information
contact: (805) 688-2893 or www.staffordschocolates.com

Wine Tasting in San Luis Obispo County

28

ts no wonder the people here call it

SLO. No one is in any hurry in the
cafes or on the sidewalks, and ce
rtainly no one is in any rush to leave.
Strangers are genuinely friendly, always
ready to talk about their favorite hiking
trail or barbecue joint, or to point the
way to the winery with the best Pinot
Noir. Its all part of the SLO life, that
combination of good stuff that makes
visiting here so nourishing to the soul.
San Luis Obispos unusual natural
beauty, along with its gentle climate,
first attracted the Spanish padres to the
area in the 1700s. In 1772 they built
the fifth of Californias 21 missions
here, on the banks of San Luis Creek,
and named it Mission San Luis Obispo
de Tolosa. Today, many consider this
the most beautiful of the Spanish
missions.
More than 200 wineries produce
critically acclaimed vintages in Paso
Robles, Edna Valley and Arroyo Grande
Valley. Visitors can head out along the
gorgeous country roads to sip their way
through the vineyards.

Obispo County, go to visitslo.com or

The Flour House Blooms in SLO Wine Country

Theyre not talking about the corner florist
when they say that The Flour House SLO offers
items that are simple, light and fresh. Indeed, this
new sidewalk cafe that opened in the heart of
downtown San Luis Obispo earlier this summer
calls itself an authentic Napoletana experience
. . . one that is simple and healthful because it
reflects the way real Italians have cooked and
eaten for generations. Owned by a husband-andwife team (one Italian by birth and the other by
blood), the restaurant offers a modern aesthetic
and obsession with quality with everything from
its house-made pasta and aperitivi to its specialty

Good to Know Before

Heading to the Wineries
BY CHARLES NEAVE
For the most part, going wine
tasting is about the easiest thing in
the world, especially in California
where wineries and tasting rooms
abound. Mostly, wine tasting is a
matter of doing a little research and
planning your day. Here are some
tips that have proven to be helpful
and are designed to help make the
sensory adventure of wine tasting
all the more enjoyable.
Before you start off, pack a few
essentials. Water (plenty of
water) and something to snack
oncrackers or a baguette.
Many wineries have picnic areas
and there are plenty of delis and
bakeries that can make up a lunch
for you, or make your own.
Be sure to nibble during the day and
make time for lunch. Two tips: drink
at least twice as much water as
you do wine, and remember that
you dont have to drink everything
poured into your glass.
Dont be afraid to ask questions.
Time again I have heard
knowledgeable winery workers
say that there is no such thing as
a stupid question, and they mean
that.
You can drink what you want, in the
order you want. If you like reds, say
so; if you dont like sweet wines,
speak up. But the idea of starting
with whites, then going on to reds
and then sweet wines is a good
guide.
If there is a particular wine you want
to try and it is not on the list, ask. Most
tasting rooms are happy to pour a
little if you show enthusiasm.
Look for tasting rooms in towns.
Many of these are cooperative
tasting rooms, where in one place
you might find wines from a
dozen or more small-to-medium
premium producers.

San Antonio Winery Nominated for Winery of the Year by Wine Enthusiast Magazine
On the cusp of its 100th anniversary, Riboli Family Wine Estates
founding winery is only one of five wineries in the United States to
be nominated for this prestigious award.
Riboli Family Wine Estates is proud to announce its founding
winery, San Antonio Winery, which was established in 1917, has
been nominated for the 2016 American Winery of the Year Award
by Wine Enthusiast.
In the nomination, Wine Enthusiast cites San Antonios creativity,
the Riboli familys rich history and calls it a leader on the forefront
of California winegrowing and winemaking.
My entire family is deeply honored to be nominated for
American Winery of the Year, says fourth-generation family
Winemaker, Anthony Riboli. I am especially excited since the
nomination occurred on my grandfathers 95th birthday! This
nomination is especially timely and significant for us since San
Antonio Winery will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2017.
Founded in Los Angles in 1917, the Riboli family survived
Prohibition by making sacramental wine, and as a result San
Antonio continues to be the only fully operational winery in the
metropolis. This same innovation and vision is what allowed the
family to see the world-class potential in Paso Robles and Monterey,
where they have been sourcing grapes and establishing vineyards
since the 1980s.
Just recently, Riboli Family Wine Estates celebrated the Grand
Opening of its new environmentally-friendly winery in Paso Robles,
which will serve as the production home for the familys portfolio
including San Antonio Winery, San Simeon, Maddalena, Opaque,
and others.
We are tremendously proud of our Los Angeles roots, says
Anthony Riboli. And we are equally proud of growing our presence
in Paso Robles and Monterey. Our family has been committed
to these two burgeoning regions since the early 1980s, and we
work tirelessly to innovate both in the vineyards and with our
winemaking.

The winners will be announced in the Wine Enthusiasts special

Best of Year issue (December 31st Issue), and honored at a blacktie gala in Miami on Monday, January 30, 2017.
About San Antonio Winery & Riboli Family Wine Estates:
Established in downtown Los Angeles in 1917, San Antonio Winery,
founding winery of Riboli Family Wine Estates, continues a proud
heritage of winemaking in Los Angeles and Paso Robles that spans
four generations of the Riboli family. The familys commitment to
producing award-winning wines has included investing in vineyards
in Californias most prestigious regions, including the Rutherford
AVA of Napa Valley, Santa Lucia Highlands and Arroyo Seco AVAs
of Monterey County and the El Pomar District and Creston AVAs of
Paso Robles. Most recently the Riboli Family has been committed to
growing its presence in the award-winning Paso Robles wine region,
opening a state-of-the-art winery in 2016. Follow San Antonio
Winery and Riboli Family Wine Estates on Facebook, Twitter,
and Instagram, or visit SanAntonioWinery.com and RiboliWines.
com. The award-winning wines in the Riboli Family Wine Estates
portfolio can be enjoyed at their three tasting rooms located at:

Alapay Cellars
Heavenly Wines from the Central Coast
Avila Beach, long known for being an oceanfront destination,
where the relaxation is key, has been the home for Alapay Cellars
since 2001. Owners Rebecca and Scott Remmenga founded Alapay
(which translates to heavenly or world-above in the Chumash
Native Americans Samala language) and set upon a course in
crafting limited-production wines which highlight the vast flavor
profiles of the vineyards of the Central Coast.
A visit to the Alapay Tasting Room offers guests an opportunity
to peruse the wide selection of whimsical wine gifts and accessories,
all while enjoying tastes of the winerys menu of wines. With more
than ten wines to choose from, guests can taste through the Limited
Release menu of seven wines or add on the Reserve wine tasting
which includes three additional wines.
A tasting experience at Alapay is an adventure of discovering the
terroir of the Central Coast wine growing appellations. The journey
includes both a 2014 Central Coast Chardonnay and a 2014 Bien

Nacido Reserve Pinot Noir. For Rhone enthusiasts a single varietal

Cinsault offers beautiful notes of cherry, strawberry and spice. The
Reserve Syrah is a long-standing favorite of Scotts and the recipient
of the 2016 Double-Gold at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine

Sinor-LaVallee: A Story of Terroir

Sinor-LaVallee, founded in 1997 by Mike Sinor and Cheri
LaVallee-Sinor, is a chapter in an adventure which began when they
met while attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. What started out
as college jobs at local wineries, soon became their passion as they
became more immersed in the craft of winemaking and studying
the art of Pinot Noir. This led to travels abroad, where the couple
not only married in France, but continued their appreciation of the
magnificent terroir of Burgundy and its acclaimed wines. Known
for his determination and enthusiasm, Sinor is recognized as one of
the Central Coasts most highly rated and recognized winemakers
and the recipient of the acclaimed Winemaker of the Year award
for San Luis Obispo County in 2012. Self-taught in the craft of
winemaking, Sinor is winemaker who truly believes great wines
begin in the vineyard.

Bassi Vineyard
Throughout the years Sinor-LaVallee has sourced fruit from
many acclaimed vineyards such as Talley-Rincon, Byron and
Aubaine properties. With the commencement of vintage 2013,
all of the winerys offerings are derived from the estates Bassi
Vineyard. With its close proximity of 1.2 miles from the Pacific
Ocean, the Bassi Vineyard in Avila Valley is paradisiacal. A hilltop
seascape of San Luis Bay to the west welcomes the morning
coastal fog as it casts its maritime influence, combined with
oceanic soils to tell a story of the land -- rich in history, with
viticulture influences which result in complex wines that intrigue
and delight with their layers of aromas and taste, inviting you to

discover more. Organically farmed with biodynamic inputs, the

Bassi Vineyards plantings of Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Albario,
Syrah and the iconic Pinot Noir, have limited yields lending to a
natural intensity that is a true expression of the location. Sinor
feels that Our wines naturally reflect their pronounced coastal
terroir, as well as the impassioned viticulture handwork that we
bring to our vines and soils. The effect of these elements is highly
local and personalthe hallmarks of Sinor-LaVallee. Our focus
is in learning the story (Terroir)of our Estate vineyard and telling
that story through our wines. The message is the vineyard; the
messenger is the wine.

Tasting Experience
The Sinor-LaVallee Tasting Room is located in picturesque
Avila Beach, a short one block from the beach. With its sunny
location and panoramic view, the tasting room is the perfect
sojourn for wine enthusiasts. An impressive selection of wines
by-the-glass or a $10 Tasting Flight of the winerys White label,
Black (Reserve) label and SLO Estate series are available, along
with a limited quantity of library selections. Wines include a
Chardonnay, Albario, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Cuvee.
You can also enjoy a delicious cheese plate from Fromagerie
Sophie, thoughtfully paired with Sinor-LaVallee wines.
Sinor-LaVallee is located at 550 1st Street, Avila Beach. The
tasting room is open ThursdayMonday 12-6pm, with extended
hours in the summer. You may call (805) 459-9595, email: www.
sinorlavallee.com and or check them out on Facebook.

Wine Tasting in Santa Barbara County

38

A Spirit and Passion for Winemaking

O

n the southern end of the Central Coast appellation, lies Santa Barbara Countys historic
wine growing region. The first vineyard production in these rolling coastal hills dates back to
1782, when Junipero Serra planted vines on Mission land. About a hundred years later, there
was 260 acres of luscious vineyards and seventeen winemakers in Santa Barbara County. Sadly,
the Prohibition Era destroyed many of these historic vineyard sites and mostly put an end to
winemaking in the regionas was the case in many of the beautiful winegrowing regions across
the state. With that being said, the spirit and passion for winemaking never left Santa Barbara
County, and this wine growing region is alive and well today. Talented winemakers are producing
outstanding and pure terroir driven wines from the five American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), planted
mostly to Burgundian, Rhne and Bordeaux grape varieties.
Although the movie Sideways is said to have put San Barbara Countys wine growing region on
the map in 2004, especially the Santa Maria Valley AVA, it is the high quality of the wine across
the county that has continued to uphold this bountiful regions reputation. Sprawling vineyards
and gently rolling hills create a picturesque scene for visitors and locals alike, who visit the many
wineries, tasting rooms and wine bars in the area. In the five AVAs, wine tasters will find a nice
range of wine styles amongst the Burgundian, Rhone and Bordeaux varietals that are produced.
In the more northern region, cool climate Burgundian varietals reign, such as Pinot Noir and
Chardonnay, due to the maritime influence. This ensures a long temperate growing season which
the Burgundian varietals crave. With ample amount of sunlight, the grapes ripen very slowly
perfect for producing terroir driven wines with pure varietal characteristics. In the southern region,
there is more of a diurnal shift with warmer nights and cooler days. This area sees less fog and has
different soil types than what is found closer to the coast. The Bordeaux and Rhine varieties flourish
in this warmer climate and the sandy soils with limestone and chalk impart a wonderfully desirable
minerality in the wines.
The wineries in Santa Barbara County boast a concentration of incredibly passionate and talented
winemakers; join them year round at their many events, celebrations and festivals, as well as in
their tasting rooms.

Wine Bar Tasting

The most common tasting

experience is a Wine Bar Tasting.
You step up to the bar where
typically a list of wines being
poured is displayed. Expect to
pay a tasting fee between $10$40. Some tasting bars will offer
you the option to taste a library
or reserve wine. Exercising this
option increases the fee, but will
allow you to taste very unique,
old or rare wines.

Sit Down Tasting

A Sit Down Tasting usually
requires an appointment, and
there may be a slightly higher
fee than a wine bar fee. Seated in
an elegant room, you are poured
several wines by your winery
host. Expect your host to describe
the unique characteristics of each
wine and how it was made.

Walk Around Tasting

8 8
8

A Walk Around Tasting is

a combination of a tour and a
tasting. Your host brings along
several bottles of wine on your
tour, and may take you to a
garden area of the winery to pour
the first round. Then you move to
another place within the winery
to sample the next wine. This
experience continues until all the
wines are tasted.

Barrel Tasting

Another popular tasting

experience that can be part of a
tour or a Walk Around is a Barrel
Tasting. Your guide takes a wine
thief, a special siphon placed
into a hole in the top of a barrel
to extract tasting samples of a
maturing wine. The sample allows
you to taste what the wine is like
in the middle of developing its
full potential.
Why make an appointment?
Some wineries are so small
that they need to know when you
are coming so someone will be
there to greet you. Others have
sit-down tastings that start and
end at specific times. Its always
a good idea to schedule your
appointments well in advance.

Bell Street Farm is a culinary destination in Santa Barbara County
wine country. This delicious eatery/market is located in Los Alamos,
California and is surrounded by gorgeous vineyards and farmland. With
the freshest cuisine and comfortable design, Bell Street Farm is the
perfect place to enjoy a meal, snack or a wine tasting.

135

FOXEN LANE

ST

Bell Street Farm is an acclaimed eatery and market in the heart

of wine country in historic Los Alamos. A must-see destination for
residents and visitors alike, the country chic setting offers a warm
and inviting atmosphere to enjoy a meal, snack, regional beers or
to sample local wines.
I work with local artisans, food purveyors, winemakers and
farmers to create a distinct dining and retail experience at Bell
Street Farm, says Jamie Gluck, owner of Bell Street Farm. The
space is an expression of my lifelong passion for fine foods and we
use only the freshest ingredients found along the California Coast.
The eatery was designed in 2011 and reflects elements found
from the original 1916 building with a modern charm. Gluck
scoured the area to find materials and design elements that would
work with the design. He works with California artisans and
manufacturers to create Bell Street Farm pottery (Los Alamos
ceramicist Ramona Clayton), hand moisturizer and soap (custom
blends from California Baby Organics), extra virgin olive oil and
red wine vinegar, granola, chicken rub (house-made) and many
other select products.
Listed by Yelp as #28 among the countrys Top 100 restaurants,
Bell Street Farms menu offerings include sandwiches with locally
made breads and California cheeses, farm fresh salads with
vegetables and greens from local farms, renowned crispy houseroasted porchetta, rotisserie Red Bird Farm chicken, unique salads
and house-made cookies, pots de creme, sweets and coffee drinks.
All retail offerings are carefully selected to reflect the local area
experience and include picnic baskets, table cloths, candles and
more. Bell Street Farm also offers custom-designed picnic baskets
for groups of two to 200 and holds 3rd Saturdays suppers and
custom dinners and parties, both on-site and at unique locations.

Foxen Canyon
The Foxen Canyon Wine Trail
A Road of Definition

BLOSSER

Every wine region has that one specific place, an area that clearly
defines the whole of the region in terms of how it best expresses
and interprets the wine. In Santa Barbara County that wine region
is Foxen Canyon. The Foxen Canyon Wine Trail is home to 15
tasting rooms along its languid path, all of which are flanked by
row upon row of vineyards, which is one of the reasons people
flock here, to get the full wine country experience.
But unlike other wine trails, Foxen Canyon is still agriculture
driven. You wont find any stores, gas stations, restaurants or
shopping. What you will find are bucolic lazy roads which
undulate into flat valleys and ascends to hilltops where the views
of open land, roaming cattle, quail and turkey vultures, verdant
vineyards, mature oak trees and blue skies beckon; a postcard to
the past of what California used to be like. The beans and barley
plantings of older times have been replaced by grapevines but

Los Olivos
Dragonette Cellars
A Committed Triumvirate
In 2005, brothers John and Steve Dragonnette, along with their
close friend Brandon Sparks-Gillis, wine geeks extraordinaire,
founded Dragonette Cellars. Santa Barbara County was their
destination, with a vision and commitment to produce the finest
wines, reflective of the diverse terroir, giving special attention to
farming practices and care of the land. Their success is evident by
the wines produced, the ratings and awards they have received and
validated by their loyal followers, which is ultimately the true test
of success.

A Simple Philosophy
The beauty of their wines is mirrored in the simplicity of their
philosophy, we are wine growers, not winemakers say Steve
Dragonette, who coaxes the grapes to produce all they can to echo
the characteristics of the individual varietal, clone and plot of land
they come from.
In their quest and commitment to produce only the best,
Dragonette Cellars sources from the premier vineyards in the
area. Fruit is purchased from vineyards such as Vogelzang and
Grassini Family Vineyards (within the Happy Canyon AVA for
their Sauvignon Blanc), Fiddlestix, John Sebastiano, Radian and
Stolpman, among others. The dedication to quality, achieved
through a devotion to the planted vine is paramount. First, the

Dragonettes look for vineyards that are sustainably, bio dynamically

and organically farmed. Once a plot is chosen, John and Brandon
are hands on in the vineyards daily, making all vineyard decisions.
They farm each row in every vineyard where the grape will
eventually bear the Dragonette name.
A visit to the tasting room, where Dragonettes highly trained
staff tours you through the current releases is a treat, both to
the palate and to understanding the devotion that goes into
making these small production ultra-premium wines. After a sip

Los Olivos
J. Ludlow Vineyard
Small Production and Dedication to Craft
J Ludlow Vineyard, up in the idyllic Los Olivos area, is the home
away from home for owners Allan and Jane Jones. Originally from
Cardiff, Wales, the couple fell in love with the Santa Ynez Valley
during one of their many trips to California. Stumbling upon a
beautiful ranch in Happy Canyon, they quickly developed an
interest in wine, purchasing Westerly Stud Farm in 2007. Keeping
production small, their dedication to their craft is evident by their
numerous awards and recent accolades.

Los Olivos Tasting Room

Their Los Olivos tasting room, opened April 2014, is a new
player in the area, producing delightful and memorable wines
unique to the Los Olivos region. With high ceilings, big windows,
and a welcoming atmosphere, it is the perfect place to grab a glass
of their award-winning wine. Sourcing most of their grapes from
Camp 4 and La Presa Vineyards in the Valley, the winery strives
to keep things local and family-run, dedicated to great taste and a
sheer enjoyment of wine.

Looking Ahead
In the near future, J Ludlow plans to plant more than 80 acres
of their grapes, focusing predominately on Bordeaux varietals of
Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. When choosing
varietals, they wanted wines that would highlight varietals

uncommon to the region, while sharing their passion for French

wines. Though the couples background is in coffee production,
they have successfully transformed a new agricultural product
blending their taste and passion for the region.

All in the Family

Family ties inspire each varietal, including their wine club aptly
entitled The Old Ludlowdian. One of their most popular sellers,
Kemsley Cabernet Sauvignon is named after Allan, who holds
the prestigious title of Lord Kemsley in Great Britain. The winery
itself is named after the street Allan was born on. And of course,
the 2008 Jane Merlot, a gold medal winner at the Los Angeles
International Wine Competition, is named after his beloved wife.
Other unique wine club highlights include a Pinot Grigio and
Primitivo Rose, perfect for any summer picnic.
Heavily involved in charity, the jigsaw logo signifies their
commitment to fighting autism and Aspergers worldwide (a
common symbol in healthcare and popular culture). In their native
country, Allan and Jane Jones own Beechwood College, a specialist
residential college for students dealing with these very conditions.
They also work closely with the Koegel Autism Center at UC
Santa Barbara and make a donation to the center for every botle of
Sauvignon Blanc sold in the tasting room.

winemaker, with Kyles help Dan was able to procure the services of
Mikael Sigouin of Kaena Wine, Mikael is well known in California
as well as his native Hawaii for the quality of his wines. He is
affectionately known by his peers and fans as The Grenache King.
The interesting thing about this story is that back in 1999 and 2000
when Casa Cassara wines were made at the Kahn Winerys custom
crush facility in Buellton, Mikael worked there, so this is not the
first time he has been involved with Casa Cassara Wines. Dan and
Bridget are excited to begin this new chapter in the story of Casa
Cassara Winery and Vineyards.
Dan Cassaras top recommendations include the 2012 Estate
Pinot Noir; the wine opens up with bright, fresh fruit and finishes
with a hint of toasted oak-a true representation of Casa Cassara.
Additionally the 2014 Chardonnay from Vernas Vineyard in Los
Alamos is perfect for summer; soft, well rounded, bright, aromatic
and very clean, this wine is a pure expression of Chardonnay. The
other notable white wine on the menu is a beautiful

Sta. Rita Hills appellation is a true family affair. With the first vines
planted in 1986, the hilltop 35 acre estate specializing in Pinot

on the eastern edge of the Sta. Rita Hills at 800-foot elevation, the
climate offers the perfect backdrop for award winning Pinot Noir.
Dan Cassara the owner has some exciting news, winemaker
Kyle Knapp has been offered the position of head winemaker at
one of Lompocs premier wineries and though it saddens them to
see him go, they understand that this is an offer that he cannot

Kalyra Winery
Nestled among hundreds of acres of rolling vineyards is
the original Kalyra Winery. With some of the most sweeping
views in the Santa Barbara wine country, Kalyra Winery offers
a laid-back beachcombers vibe to its tasting room and gift
shop. Winemaker, Mike Brown, an Australian who fell in love
with California, is known far and wide for his amazingly broad
selection of wines which includes red/white and dessert wines as
well as sparkling wine and his newest evolution of wine 239
(a wine mixer like no other). Mike Browns flair is blending the
best of Santa Barbara varietals with Australia, Portugal, France
and Spain to produce value priced wines that wine aficionados
of all levels can enjoy.
Youll be served from the bar featured in the Sideways movie
and enjoy browsing the extensive Kalyra Boutique, located next
to the tasting room. Its full length porch and side lawn offer a
fantastic, tranquil picnic spot for your full tasting day as well.
Kalyra loves dogs and while they cannot be inside the tasting
room, you are welcome to bring leashed dogs on our porch or side
lawn during your visit.
Open seven days, Kalyra is a working vineyard, so lots to see
and do throughout the year, especially during the harvest season in
October. Kalyras Grape Stomp event (just one of many events this
vineyard hosts) has been voted one of the best in the Central Coast
and is a not to be missed event for those who want to experience

Magnavino Cellars
In 2008, Robert and Barbara Wagner achieved their dream of
opening a winery. Since then, the husband and wife team have
never looked back. Magnavino Cellars is a great place to visit for
fantastic wine, and a perfect location to gather with friends and

barrels to achieve the flavor profile and complexity they desire
for their wines. The result is award-winning wines with beautiful
characteristics. In the past three years, MagnavinoCellars has won

two time Best of Class for the 2010/2011 Petite Sirah at the San
Francisco International Wine Competition, a Platinum medal for

competitions.
The tasting room is inspired by ancient Italian villas that cover
the landscape in Italy. Here, friends and family gather to share the
experience of great wine and good company. In fact, the tasting
room is so beautiful that Magnavino Cellars often hosts events
to bring friends and family together for celebratory occasions.
Guests can even book the tasting room for private events and enjoy
