New Office
For those of you who have not found
us yet we are in the new ANRA
office on Camposol B where the
bank used to be. The cash point is
still there, but this is nothing to do
with our office!
Our opening hours are: Tues/
Wed/Thurs
10am-2pm
(full
details on Page 4)
Deadline
The deadline for all articles and
advert changes is 15th of the
month.
Please can everyone be aware that
unless we get all the information
by the deadline, we will struggle
to put your article or advert in for
the current month. The design team
and the printer need time to get
everything ready for us to distribute
the magazine on the first available
day of the month. We are very
proud to produce a quality magazine
which is available to you at the
earliest opportunity every month.
This means that our advertisers
get a full months advertising which
is particularly important to bars,
restaurants and charities who are
holding events during the month.

Non-Resident Tax
It still surprises us the number of people who
are unaware of this tax. When organising the
sales of properties in Spain for Non-Residents
we require the receipts for Non-Resident Tax
and IBI (which is our council tax) both of these
must be up to date and paid in full.
We have two property taxes for Non-Resident
property owners in Spain:
1. The Council Tax (IBI) issued by
the local council which is annual and
we strongly advise setting this up as
a direct debit so as not to miss the
annual deadline.
2. Non-Resident Tax which needs
to be completed every year by all
Non-Residents as a consequence of
owning property in Spain. This must
be submitted before 31st December
using tax form 210 and we advise you
seek advice from your lawyers regards
completing and submitting the form.
One form must be completed for every
single owner.
This is necessary regardless of whether you
are receiving rental incomes or not. This
form must even be submitted by those
Non-Residents not renting properties.
Obviously it must be submitted by those who
are renting properties too.
Tenants are liable for Non-Resident Tax
and therefore they could be liable to pay
this tax if the Non-Resident landlord is not
completing his/her obligations. We strongly
advise you to check that your Non-Resident
landlord is paying this tax.

As
the
largest
Non-Governmental
Organisation (NGO) in the world, Lions
are first responders on a huge scale,
however there is still a great deal of work
for Lions after an event. In 2004 in Acer
Province in Sumatra Indonesia, where the
Tsunami struck, with Lions & international
aid, the local clubs and volunteers have
helped build schools, surgeries and much
of a large village to support those who lost
everything. Funds from LCIF were first to
arrive.
Lions, when challenged, can perform
amazing things.
Membership of a Lions club can give great
personal pleasure helping those least able
to help themselves. It is also a worldwide
organisation with more than 42,000 clubs.
If youre on holiday or business you can
look up a local Lions club and be sure of a
warm welcome and help with local events
or customs if you need it.
Since 2006, LCIF has made grants to
disaster-affected areas of more than
$100 million. Sadly the number of such
emergencies does not reduce, although
year on year there are variations as the
needs continue.
This November & December the Mazarrn
Lions will be collecting food for the local
needy which is distributed by Cruz Rojas
direct to those who need it most. Please
continue to help us to help all those in
need, both here in Mazarrn and Spain
and across the World.

Citrus Trees
Most of us have some Citrus Trees in our
garden for their foliage, flowers and fruit
of course. Citrus Trees are a nice option
as evergreen plant, which like most plants
is ideal for the spring and autumn planting
season. If you are thinking about putting
one in your garden or balcony, now is a good
time. Citrus Trees thrive in a consistently
sunny, humid environment with fertile soil
and adequate rainfall or irrigation. The
trees flower in the spring and fruit is set
shortly afterwards. Fruit begins to ripen in
autumn or early winter months, depending
on the cultivar and it develops increasing
sweetness afterwards. Some cultivars of
tangerines ripen in the winter. Some, such
as the grapefruit, may take up to eighteen
months to ripen.

Grapefruit and Lemon trees fruit almost
all year. Grapefruit become more hardy
as they mature. Oranges, depending on

Citrus Trees require only minimal pruning.
In February, re-shape plants by thinning out
overcrowded branches. Leggy plants can

With economic growth after 1830, the population of the wider area covered by the
city grew from some 89,000 inhabitants in
1797 to over 107,000 in 1857 and to almost
112,000 by the turn of the century. New
crops and technology gradually arrived, as
did the railway in 1862, which occasioned
a visit from Queen Isabel II. Nevertheless,
Murcia, experienced the political instability
which afflicted the rest of Spain in the second half of the century.
If the 20th Century had its undoubted traumas, none more than the Civil War of 193639, it also saw the development of the modern city of Murcia. Initially, there were the
theatres, casinos, cafes/meeting places and
new buildings such as the Victoria Hotel, the
Palace of Daz Cassou, or the Casa Cerd.
If Murcia had prospered in the early 18th
Century because it had been on the side of
the successful Bourbons in the War of the
Spanish Succession, the Spanish Civil War
saw it as a rear-guard province for the republican cause, supplying the fronts and receiving refugees.
Deindustrialization was a part of the aftermath of the Civil War as World War II took
hold elsewhere and markets were closed.

TV News
Not much seems to have changed in the
TV world in the last month so initially I
thought I would give a quick summary of
other entertainment available to us Brits in
the Murcia region.
Many cinemas now show a film or two in
original language (marked VO or VOS in
cinema listings). Aguilas generally shows
one on a Tuesday; Lorca once a week;
Centrofama Murcia on a Monday; Nueva
Condomina Murcia has several films on a
Tuesday and Torrevieja generally has one
English language film every evening. Other
Murcia cinemas do have odd nights with an
original language screening.
It is not always easy to find the VO films
but www.cinesa.es lists the Nueva

The Box
Yesterday I was given a large blue plastic
storage box by my sister and brother-inlaw on a label attached to one side of
the box was written these words Lifetime
Guarantee. For the last 13 plus years this
box and its contents have travelled many
miles from UK to Spain, to Canada and
back again to Spain, but now the time had
come to deal with the contents of this very
special box
This very ordinary storage box was full
of extraordinary memories of two very
precious people - our Mum and Dad and
their last remaining bits and bobs of
memorabilia were contained inside.
Late last night I sat and took the lid off
the box and started taking out the precious
items - Dads cap, glasses and certificate of
baptism, several photo albums, a dish and
a brass pot, numerous photo albums and
loose photographs. I also found Dads letter
from Buckingham Palace announcing him
being chosen to receive Maundy Money
from the Queen on her birthday at Lichfield
Cathedral.

Currency Fluctuations
In recent weeks we have all noticed the value
of the UK pound has dropped significantly
against the US dollar and the Euro. Despite
earlier predictions of a steady rise by the end
of the year, a trading anomaly in the Asian
markets triggered a sell-off of the pound
and at one point during the night the pound
fell to 1.03 euros, later recovering to 1.10.
This, it seems - according to most foreign
exchange experts, is where the pound should
