Read Article 16, pg 72, in your book. Then answer the following questions.
1. How does Islam view Jesus?
Islam accepted Jesus as a prophet sent by God. They didn't see him as a divine
being.

2. Where did Islam expand in the 7th & 8th centuries? How did they expand?

3. What were the consequences of the rise of Islam for the Church?

Jerusalem, Antioch, and Alexandria (the three patriarchates) had fallen and thus lost
their influence. Secular power shifted from Rome to the north where the Frankish
kings were.

1. What are the five pillars of Islam?
The five pillars of Islam are faith in the oneness of Allah and the finality of the
prophethood of Muhammad , keeping of the five scheduled daily prayers (salah),
almsgiving (zakat), fasting (sawm), pilgrimage to Mecca to those who are able.

2. Go to page 9 to the paragraphs under the excerpts. What is morality in Islam


based upon?
The entire Islamic moral universe devolves solely from the life and teachings of
Muhammad.

3. Go to page 16. What is Sharia law?


The blueprint for the good Islamic society. The legal code ordained by Allah for all
mankind.

4. What is covered by the 2 parts of Sharia law?


The first section, Acts of worship, includes ritual purification, prayers, fasts, charity,
pilgrimage to Mecca.
The second section, human interaction, includes financial transactions,
endowments, laws of inheritance, marriage, divorce, and child care.

5. What does jihad mean?

It literally translates as "struggle."

6. Summarize the first 2 paragraphs from Hasan Al-Banna on jihad.

All Muslims must take time for jihad, it is an obligation from Allah. Allah has made
the reward of fighters and martyrs great, but the punishment for those who find
excuses to be dreadful. The evasion of the jihad is one of the seven sins that
guarantee failure.

7. Go to page 22. How do Muslims view the rest of the world?


The rest of the world, which has not accepted Sharia law and so is not in a state of
submission, exists in a state of rebellion or war with the will of Allah.

8. How is the House of Islam supposed to respond to the rest of the world?

9. Go to page 34 to the frequently asked questions section. What was the situation
before the crusades?

10. Who were the most ardent Crusaders? What was their background with Islam?

11. If Islam is violent, why are so many Muslims peaceful?
