GUIDE TO SCAFFOLDING

INTRODUCTION
This Gresser Guide to Scaffolding is a guide to how Gresser safely uses welded frame
scaffolding in compliance with OSHA CFR 1926 SUBPART L SCAFFOLDS.
It is the policy of Gresser Companies Inc. to provide a safe, healthy and productive work
environment for all employees and to abide by all federal, state, and local regulations.
To make our approach to scaffold safety effective and uniform throughout the
organization, Gresser Companies Inc. has adopted the following Gresser Guide to
Scaffolding. This guide is a component of Gressers Workplace Safety Program with the
goal to reduce the frequency and severity of accidents and injuries, and make our
company a safe and productive place to work. Accidents cost time and money, disrupt
workflow, and seriously impact personal lives. All employees are responsible following
all rules and regulations pertaining to health and safety. Foremen and Superintendents are
the primary enforcers of safety rules
For this program to be successful, all employees must maintain a positive attitude
towards accident and injury prevention. Working safely is a condition of employment at
Gresser. Failure to perform work in a safe manor, taking unnecessary risks, or
endangering others is grounds for termination.
This manual outlines the safety rules and regulations and contains examples of how to
safely use welded frame scaffolding. If you need additional information specific to your
work site contact our safety coordinator at 651-454-5976.

General note on inspection of scaffold equipment. All

scaffold equipment that is determined to be unsafe must be
immediately taken out of service. Tie a piece of yellow
caution tape or red danger tape on to the piece of
equipment and return to Gresser yard on the next truck. No
not bundle unsafe equipment with serviceable equipment.

Identification and inspection of components

Scaffold frames. Gresser owns and rents Waco brand of walk through frames. The
standard frame is pictures below. Gresser barcode identification for this frame is
BL04419. The Waco model number is 0156-06.The factory color of these frames is red,
Gresser paints the frames we own black to differentiate them from rented frames.
In addition to the daily
scaffold inspection
requirements (see inspection
section), the frames need to
be inspected during erection
and tear down. Frames need
to be taken out of service if
any of the following reasons:
Frame bent
Tubing kinked
broken welds
Speed locks(J shaped
hooks for attaching
cross bracing) broken
or missing
Frames taken out of service
need to be marked with a
piece of yellow or red caution
or danger tape and sent back
to the Gresser Yard. Do not
bundle out of service frames
with serviceable frames.
Frames are wired in bundles
of 15 for shipping.
Gresser also owns shorter
frames used in
combination with the
standard walk through
frames.

Cross Braces
Each pair of frames requires two cross braces. The cross braces are constructed of angle
iron or tubing. Cross braces are identified by LOCK SPACING X FRAME SPACING
Lock spacing is the distance between the speed locks as indicated on the frame drawings
above. Frame spacing is the distance between frames when the scaffold system is
assembled. The standard frame spacing for masonry construction is 7 ft. The cross
braces are identified by the chart below.. Some braces have the LOCK SPACING X
FRAME SPACING stamped next to the hole on the brace. For example 2 X 7 stamped
or marked on the cross brace indicated 2 foot lock spacing for frames you want to set 7
feet apart. Some cross braces have two sets of holes for different frame spacing. The
table below also lists the center to center distance of the holes.
Inspect braces for connection at mid point and for straightness. Take out of service
braces that are bent or are not connected in the center.

Side brackets (Gresser refers to these as out riggers)

Side brackets hang on the side or end of the scaffold frame as a working platform or as
extra space to land material. Gresser uses a variety of styles of side brackets. Side
brackets are color coded and listed in the table below. Certain side brackets as listed in
the table are have been tested for staging up to a 3000 lb pallet in feeder bay application.
(see section on loading). All side brackets are rated for a minimum of 75 lb per sq ft
loading.

Guard Rails
Guard rails are required on all non-working edges above 10 feet. Gresser requires guard rails on
non working edges above 6 feet. Gresser paints all guard rail components yellow.
Standard guard rail configuration:
Cross bracing is acceptable in place of a midrail when the crossing point of two braces is
between 20 inches (0.5 m) and 30 inches (0.8 m) above the work platform or as a toprail when the
crossing point of two braces is between 38 inches (0.97 m) and 48 inches (1.3 m) above the work
platform. The end points at each upright shall be no more than 48 inches (1.3 m) apart.

x-brace can be used as

top rail when this
distance is 38-48
inches

X brace from working face

installed as lower rail. At
least one hole of brace must
be retained in speed lock

Example of 7 ft guard rail used as lower rail.

Example of guard rail panel. Use in high traffic

areas or scaffolds set up for long term access.
Note that X bracing must always remain in
place in non working side of scaffold. Inspect
for bent parts and missing pins.

End gate style of guard rail used at the end of

scaffold runs. Inspect for bent parts or broken
welds.

Example of end gate for use with

outriggers. Must be used with gravity
lock pin or bolt on collar. Inspect for
missing pin, bent parts or broken welds.

Clamp on end gates for use at the end of side

brackets or climbers. Inspect for broken welds
or missing bolts.

Example of end gate for use with side brackets.

Must be used with gravity lock pin or bolt and
nut. Inspect for broken welds and missing pin.

As scaffold rises above door

ways and windows, guard rails
are requires when the top of
door or window is greater than
10 ft 21in above floor.

Guard rail required

if greater than 10 ft
21 inches.

Example of clamp on guard rail pockets for

aluminum plank. Max distance between
uprights 8 ft.

Fall protection requirements for all scaffolds

The standard requires employers to protect each employee on a scaffold more than 10 feet 3.1 m)
above a lower level from falling to that lower level. 1926.451(g)(1) Gresser requires guard rails
at heights greater than 6 ft above lower surface. To ensure adequate protection, install guardrails
along all open sides and ends before releasing the scaffold for use by employees, other than the
erection and dismantling crews. 1926.451(g)(4)
Guardrails are not required, however,
When the front end of all platforms are less than 14 inches (36 centimeters) from the face of the
work; 1926.451(b)(3)

Non working
edge, guard rail
