4. Calculate the current through the 10 ohm resistor in the network.

Parallel combination of R4 and R5

R4 R5 15 x 10
RBD = ---------- = ------------- = 6 ohm
R 4 + R5 (15 + 10)

Adding RBD with R3

RABD = R3 + RBD = 5 + 6 = 11 ohm

Parallel combination of RABD with R2

R2 x RABD 20 x 11
RAC = ---------------- = ------------ = 7.097 ohm
R2 x RABD (20 + 11)

Total resistance of the circuit

Rt = R1 + RAC = 5 + 7.097 = 12.097 ohm

Therefore,

Total current I1 = U /Rt = 12/12.097 = 0.992 A

UAC = U - I1R1 = 12 – (0.992 x 5) = 7.04 V

I2 = UAC / R2 = 7.04/20 = 0.352 A

I3 = I1 - I2 = 0.992 – 0.352 = 0.64 A

Current through 10 ohm resistor

R4 15
I5 = I3 x ----------- = 0.64 x ------------ = 0.384 A
R 4 + R5 (15 + 10)

Check :

UBC = UAC – I3 R3 = 7.04 – (0.64 x 5) = 3.84

I5 = UBC / R5 = 3.84/10 = 0.384 A
