CALCULUS I

Fall 2013

TEXTBOOK CALCULUS by James Stewart (7th edition).


SYLLABUS The topics that will be covered in this class are:
APPENDIX Review
Appendix A:Numbers, inequalities and absolute values
Appendix D: Trigonometry
CHAPTER 1: Functions and Limits
CHAPTER 2 Derivatives
CHAPTER 3 Applications of Differentiation
CHAPTER 4 Integrals
CHAPTER 5 Applications of Integration (We will cover as much of this chapter as time
allows, the rest will be covered in Calculus II.)

COURSE REQUIREMENTS: This is going to be a demanding class and it will be your


responsibility to keep up with the course material and do all the necessary review that you
require. Please use the services of the QRC (Quantitative Resource Center) to get some help
with precalculus material. Your evaluation for this class will be based on your performance
in the following four categories.
Attendance and Class Participation You have to come to class every time and
participate in the class discussion. Attendance records will be kept and your advisers
will be notified if you are absent for three consecutive classes. If something is not clear
please ask questions.
Weekly assignments Homework problems will be assigned to you, mostly from the
textbook, usually every Friday and they will be due back the following Friday in class
at 10 am (or 11 am for section 2). Absolutely no late homework will be accepted.
You must write clearly and legibly. You will get your work back evaluated and with
comments during the Caclulus workshop. You should then look it over and ask me or
the TAs any questions you may have regarding your evaluated homework. Your weekly
assignments will be a significant factor in your final evaluation for this class.
Calculus Workshop
The mandatory workshop that accompanies this glass will take place on Wednesday
2-3:30 or Wednesday 5-6:30 in the Chae Auditorium. A series of problems, some challenging and some routine will be distributed each week. You are encouraged to work

with other people in groups. The atmosphere will be informal and the TAs and I will
all be there to give you hints or to praise you. Attendance is mandatory.
Exams There will be three midterm exams and one comprehensive final. The exam
dates are as follows:
Midterm 1: Thursday Sept 19, 6-7 pm in HCL 8
Midterm 2: Thursday Oct 24, 6-7 pm in HCL 8
Midterm 3: Thursday Nov 21, 6-7 pm in HCL 8
FINAL EXAM: Monday December 9, 6-8 pm in HCL 8

Policies
If you need to miss a workshop or exam for medical reasons you must provide either a
doctors note or a note from the wellness center here on campus.
Please turn off your cellphone when you come to class. You may not use use your laptop
or your phone to browse the internet or listen to music in class or in the workshop.
Please be in class on time. It is so disruptive for everyone to have people walk in late in
class.
Please document any disability allowance that you may require.
My office is located at HNS 107.
My office hours will be Tue 4-6, Wed 1-2. Other times possible by appointment.
