Dear Parents,
We had a great first half term and managed to cover so much of our
curriculum. Now it is time to move on to our next round of planning and to
ensure that the coverage is rigorous and thorough. Please take the time to
read through this letter and help your children at home to encourage and
consolidate all they are learning at school.
Curriculum
The planning for the year ahead ensures that everyone receives a broad
and balanced programme that will also be challenging. I will be finding out
what the students already know and make sure that if there are any gaps
then these will be filled. You are welcome to contact the school to arrange
an appointment to see me to discuss the reading assessments of your
child.
The year ahead has been planned in three terms covering five blocks of
units of study in our half terms. Over the second half term those of us in
the Year 6 class will study the following:
English
Our main focus will be Biographies and Autobiographies. We will develop
skills and understanding in;
Spoken language
Comprehension
Grammar
Composition
Transcription

Other aspects of English will incorporate daily spelling work with a test
every Thursday, Daily reading with reading at home every evening. Each
student will be given an appropriate level book from our reading scheme.
All reading should be recorded in the Home/School reading record book.
Other areas of English are continual and ongoing, such as; Handwriting,
Punctuation, Complex sentence structure, Paragraphs, Story Writing,
Report writing, Dictionary work and the eight parts of speech within
grammar.
Mathematics
During each week of this half term we will follow a weekly theme as
follows:

Week 7 Fractions and Division


Week 8 Place Value, Decimals and Subtraction
Week 9 Measures, Including Time
Week !0 3D Shape and Fractions
Week 11 Written Multiplication, mixed calculations and word
problems.
Week 12 Review and Revision
There will also be a weekly Mental Mathematics test.
Science
Our theme for this half term is Human Organs and Systems and each
week we will look at;
Week 7 Heart rates and physical exertion - a dramatic representation
(observing over time/fair testing/exploring/pattern seeking)

Week 8 Modelling the solar system Circulatory system sculptures


(analysing secondary sources/pattern seeking)

Week 9 Heartbeat sound installation (fair testing/exploring/pattern


seeking)

Week 10 Understanding the human body through history (analysing


secondary sources)

Week 11 Documentary on diet, exercise, drugs and lifestyle


(observations over time/fair testing, analysing secondary
sources)

Week 12 Plotting the journey of water and food (exploring/analysing


secondary sources)

Topic
Our Topic work will cover History, Geography, Art and Technology.
Sometimes other subjects will be linked to our Topic work.

BLACK GOLD Each week we will cover a particular theme on Oil, our
dependency on it, environmental issues, and alternative forms of
renewable and non-renewable energy sources.
As part of this topic each student will undertake an individual research
project. This will then be presented to the class.

Music
The musical focus is on Performing and focuses on songs that can be
sung in different combinations. The theme of challenging journeys in life
resonates through this selection of songs with thoughts of change and
transition, and binds them in an optimistic and uplifting song-cycle
performance. Time during lessons will also be devoted to rehearsing for
the schools highly anticipated December Musical Production, Jack and
the Beanstalk.
Art
Week 7-Learn how to draw an advanced tree step by step.
Week 8 -Learn how to draw a windmill step by step. -Use aquarelle
colours to create a background full of gradient of different colours. -Use
matching colours to draw a windmill full of rocks and patterns.
Week 9 -Students will follow a drawing tutorial to draw a wonderful
flower. -Learn a new technique of mixing pencil colours.
Week 10 Collage. Students will use scissors wisely to cut small pieces of
coloured paper. -Each student will draw the earth then start to paste the
small pieces of paper on it using glue sticks.
Week 11 -Students will work collaboratively to create a project of a
garden full of animals. -A big poster will be provided, students will divide
the tasks together to create trees, leaves, sky, many animals such as
horses, cows...etc.
Week 12 -Students will use plastic bags, empty plates to make pots then
they will use shishsticks to add some patterns on the clay. -After that
students will use paint to paint the pots using matching colours.

Week 13 -Learn how to draw different Christmas icons. -Each student will
create a craft that is representing Christmas such as Santa, Christmas
Tree, and Bell ...etc.
The class will also study other subjects with our Specialist teachers for
Arabic, Religion, Social Studies, French, Computing and P.E,
Homework will be set every night and should last no more than 40
minutes to one hour,
All children must read their reading books for at least 10 to 20 minutes
every evening.
Children must complete their spellings every evening for 10 to 15
minutes.
A further set piece of homework for English or Maths should take up to 20
minutes.
By the time your child has worked through this unit, I hope they will have achieved
all of the learning targets. I hope that they have a greater understanding of their
world and its interconnections and have enjoyed the learning activities. If you have
any comments about the work your child is going to do, please get in touch.
Things to bring
Please remember to send in your childs P.E. on the correct days indicated on
the Timetable.
All children are required to bring a healthy packed lunch and also may wish to
bring a snack for break times.
Please also provide a water bottle.
Students should bring a pencil case with pens, pencils, ruler, pencil
sharpener, rubber, ruler and colouring pencils.

An apron or large old T-Shirt for Art / Painting lessons.
