Your workplace is doing well, but there is some room for improvement.
How can your workplace improve in this category?

Workplace Assessment: Apple AHA

Introduction
Health initiatives are most effective when they target health holistically (Jamner &
Stokols, 2001), considering interpersonal, Institutional, community and public policy factors
(Rural Health Information Hub, 2016). I am an At-Home Advisor (AHA) for Apple, yes that
Apple. I am proud to work for this company, and it does a lot of things to provide for employee
health. I truly feel that the company cares about my health, and I feel that I can seek help when
and if I need it. There is a strong sense of team and teamwork earns bonus points with
management; and techniques are given for both physical and mental/emotional health. Because I
work from home, there is some limitation in what is provided to me through the company, in
particular in the area of nutrition. Despite this, I would rate my employer high for overall health
promotion. I have highlighted the answers to the assessment in regards to health promotion in
my workplace.
Strategies for Change
The most room for improvement lies in the area of nutrition. Because I am a remote
employee, there is limited opportunity for Apple to promote my nutritional choices. Apple could
provide some basic nutrition information to promote healthier lifestyles in addition to all the
other great steps they take to promote employee and community health. Sending emails to
employees about nutrition education, providing training via presentation/workshop and forming
a support group for healthy eating are all ideas Apple could use to promote employee nutrition.
Strengths

Workplace Assessment: Apple AHA

Apple cares about employee health, and it shows in the multitude of ways that employee
health is considered and provided for. While I dont receive annual physical exams, employees
who do more physical work do receive them. Because I work at a desk, I received an
ergonomics evaluation to improve my physical wellbeing. At some Apple locations, treadmill
desks are available, which allow employees to exercise while working. During the ergonomics
assessment, a professional gave a presentation about exercises to do to prevent fatigue and
promote wellness, such as eye breaks from the computer screen, stretching exercises for health,
and standing every hour to take a mini-break. Intellectual health is promoted by providing and
appreciating more training, as well as the college program which allows college students to work
around their class schedule and receive tuition reimbursement; and it has been shown that
increasing education can stave off depression (NCHPAD (n.d.)). Emotional health is also
promoted through presentation and tools to help cope with stress and alleviate mental fatigue.
Conclusion: How can I be a Change Agent at Apple?
Apple promotes individual strengths and allows them to branch into other areas of
development according to their interests. I am talented at creating power-point presentations,
and now that I see there is room for nutrition information, I am going to speak to my manager
about creating a presentation to promote employee nutrition awareness. This program will
introduce basic nutrition to employees and allow them to understand the benefits of eating a
well-balanced diet.
This presentation has great potential for health promotion, as my colleagues are all
college students, and we all remember the caffeine-filled, junk-food loving, calorie-rich diet that
accompanies most college settings. One of my colleagues, for example, nearly lives off Ramen

noodles. I could also tailor the presentation to addressing the typical college-student diet for
enhanced effectiveness.
Finally, providing an email newsletter that goes out once a month to all remote advisors
would enhance nutrition. I could address a specific topic each month and give simple tips to
accomplish nutrition goals. Perhaps I could even advocate for an adherence program that
promoted adopting nutrition practices each month. By promoting nutrition through an email
newsletter/support group and creating a presentation about the importance of nutrition, I can
become a change agent to promote nutritional health in my workplace.
