Modern Science and Ancientwisdom, which I chose as the title
of my talk, share many prerequisitesfor their exploration:curiosity,
keen observation, self discipline, impersonality, cooperationwith coworkers, and verifying data and hypothesis for one self. Modern
Science and Ancient Wisdom have also in common what Aurbindo
said about advancementof knowledge:
The human mind in its progress marches from knowledge to
\ knowledge, or it renews and enlarges previous knowledge that has
\,, been obcured and overlaid, ar it seizes on old imperfect clues and
\ /.s/ed by them to new discoveries.
Modern science has the advantage of developing knowledge by

speechto the AsiaticSocietyin Calcuttaon 2"" Feb. 1789:

.i
The Sanskrit language, whatever be it antiquity,is of a wondertul t'l:
structure: more perfect than Greek. more copious than the Latin.
and more exqui;itely refined than either, yet bearing to both of them
a stronger affinity, both in the roots of the verbs and in the forms ol
grammat, than could possibility have been produced by accident:
so strong indeed, that no philologer could examine all three, without
believing them to have sprung from some common source, which
perhaps no longer exists.
As a first step in this research,Dr Abdul Kalam suggeststhat
efforis should be made to locate any missing literatureavailablein
palm leaves in differentparts of the country so that they can be
documentedand preserved.He suggeststhat digitaltechnologycould
be used for documentingthese scriptures, both in audio and video
form which can be preservedas long term wealth for use by many
generations,As a second step there is a need to organize research
on Vedas in terms of their chronology, the order in which different
Vedasand relatedmanuscriptswere written,authorshipof the Vedas
and interpretationof various hymns. We have excellent statistical
methodology known as computational stylistics to solve some of
these problems"Some yearsago an Americanscholar,Tautmanmade
a statisticalinvestigationof the authorshipand date of publicationof
Kautifya'sArthasastra.He found considerablevariationin the styles
of prose in different parts of the book and came to the conclusion
that Kautilyacould not have been the sole author of Arthasastraand
that it must have been written by several authors, perhapsthree or
four, at differentperiodsof iime, centeringaround the m;ddle of the
secondcenturyAD. Since there is no other known works of Kautilya.

Today many advanced countries in the world have introduced
Vedic studies in the curriculumof courses in the universities. There
is a world Academy of Vedic Sciences (WAVES) which organizes

even found a dockyard, which indicatedmaritimetrade. They have
found geometriccompasses,linearscales made of ivory,engineering
tools for constructionfor surgery and for warfare etc. Man-made
water lakes were created for harvestingrain water and using it for
farming and drinking purposes. Many things we learn from the
Harrappanpeople and water harvestingthrough man-madelakes
has become one of them.

There is also extensivearchivalmaterialof India'smaritimetrade with

11) There are many great scientificdiscoveriesand technological
advancementin mathematics,astronomy,architecture,chemistry,
metallurgy,medicine,natural philosophyand other areas.
12) As I have already said, lndia was the first country which
discoveredzero and made significantadvances in mathematical

his daughter Lilavati,Brahmagupta, who had declaredthat the Sun

educationshould not only be free upto the universityeducationbut a
large number of scholarshipbe reservedfor women at all levels of
education. The same should be our policy for ScheduledCaste and
ScheduledTribe students.

This is the only way that the lamp of knowledge can be taken to every
18) Along with this the Prime Ministeralso announcedof the
's plan to establish30 (thirty)new centraluniversitiesand having
high quality school in every block of the country. He said '. "If the
system expands, it also needs a larger pool of school
. We are working on a plan to gradually universalize
schooling in the country. This programme will build on
success of the Sarva Shiklha Abhiyan and will cover the entire
in 2 - 3 years. Fufther, in order to promote excellence, we
working on a programme for having one high quality school in
block of the country. These publicly funded 6000 schools will
benchmarks for excellence in public schooling which can
be role models for the rest of the public educational gystem".
19) In the first National Policy of Education declared in 1968,
was givenfor the implementation
of three languagesformula
Hindi as Nationallanguage,Englishas an officiallanguage,the
languagewherethe schoolis based.Alongwith this, teaching
Sanskrit language was consideredas "essentialpart of India's
and heritage".
20) But where is Sanskrit today as an essential part of our culture
heritage? Unfortunately,in most of our schools of the country
has lost its primaryimportance.Even in colonialdays,Sanskrit
a compulsorysubject in secondaryschools, which in the name
implementationof three languageformula has been, today given
role of an optional subject.

25) Speakingat Allahabad Universityin 1947, Pt. JawaharlalNehru

said '4 university stands for humanism, for tolerance, for reason,
progress, for the adventure of ideas and for the search for truth.
stands for the onward march of the human race towards even
objectives. lf the universities discharge their duty adequately, then
is well with the nation and the people. But if the temple of
itself becomes a home of narrow bigotry and petty obiectives, how.
then wilt the nation prosper or a people grow in stature?"
26) He said '. "A university is not a factory sending out batchesof
students on a conveyor belt into the market place. Nor is it iust a
training cottege. One must make a distinction between a university
and a college or a training centre. The latter are very important
places of learning, no doubt. And, a university is also a place for
teaching and training. However, a university is something morc. lt
must be a place where knowledgeis impafted and acquired, contested
and created. tt is atso a ptace where we instatl vatues in our youth
and offer space for the full expression of human creativity and
intellectual endeavof'.
28) We should have a two prongedpolicyof an ideal educational
system. We should give emphasis on producingmore scientists,
doctors, engineers, techniciansas the country needs a lot many of
them. But attention should be paid to the teaching ol subjects like
History,Geography,Philosophyand Modern Indian Languagesetc. A
universitywould not be consideredcompletewith teachingof science
and humanitiesalone. We lack spiritualeducationfor which India
establishedits uniquerole in the world. Indiawas specialin the world
for its attainment in Adhyatma Vidya, which is the highest attainment
of life. One should cultivateboth materialand spiritualsciences. The
spiritual is the Para Vidya and material is the Apara Vidya or Avidya.
The motto of our educationfrom ancienttimes was that we meet our

OBJECTIVE:
Yajnas are ancientfire ceremoniesperformedto invoke the
I
,elementsof Nature. The purposewas to channelisethe energiesof
Natureto fulfill human desires.Apparently,at physicallevel they are
mere mechanicalprocesseswherein oblationmaterialor offering
(poojaitmes)is consignedto the flames. Traditionally,
they are known
ras rituals. However,a more appropriatedefinitionof yajna that brings
1l:theirsignificanceto the fore can be ... "Yajna is a scientificprocess
:rwhich includesthe most importantthing - faith (Shradhaa)".The
processesare intendedto invokethe Naturalenergies.The
ifaith component, like that in prayer, resultsin harnessingthe invoked
NaturePower(through the mentalenergyor positive innervibrations
of the group of performersi.e., host, priests, spectatorsand so on
etc.).
