Pakistans proven and potential reserves of oil and gas

Pakistan economy is growing day by day. By this growth demands higher energy
consumption and which putting high pressure on countries economy. Pakistan mainly
depends upon oil and gas resources to fulfil their energy requirements .oil are not enough to fulfil
energy requirement of the growing economy. As a result Pakistan has to
import large quantity of oil and oil based products from Middle East countries. Gas reserves in
the country are enough for current gas requirements. So natural gas is playing a key role in
power sector.
1 Gas Companies and their wells in Pakistan
Pakistan recoverable reserves of natural gas were estimated at 24.7 trillion cubic feet (tcf) till 30
June 2013. The average production of natural gas during July 2012- March 2013 was 4,259 million
cubic feet per day (mcfpd). Pakistan is facing shortage of natural gas in winter. The reason of
shortage of natural gas is that nearly 2 million vehicles used compressed natural gas (CNG) as a
primary fuel[2]

OIL Companies and their wells

Recoverable reserves of crude oil in Pakistan till 31 December 2013, were estimated at 362 million
barrels. The average oil production during July 2012-2013 was 76,277 barrels per day (bpd).
Recently there have been new oil discoveries and the daily production of crude oil reaches 100,000
barrels per day (bpd) in May 2014. Demand for petroleum stands at approximately 450,000 barrels
per day (bpd). The oil and gas development company limited (OGDCL) is the largest producer of
crude oil in Pakistan

3 Oil and gas field in Pakistan

Oil and gas has been found in Potwar or upper Indus basin and Lower Indus basin and gas with
one gas or condensate discovery in Sulaiman or middle Indus basin. [1]
3.1 Potwar (Upper Indus) basin
Sadkal field, Missa Keswal field, Fimkassar oil field, Dhurnal field and Adhi field are all located
in Potwar basin. In Koht-Potwar, where mostly oil is found, the proven reservoirs are Muree
formation (Miocene), Sakesar limestone (Eocene), Hangu and Lockhart (Paleocene), Lumshiwal
sandstone (Cretaceous)

Datta sandstone

(Jurassic), Wargal

formation

and

Tobra

formation(Permian)and Khewra sandstone (Cambrian). The source rock in Kohat area is probably
Chichali formation (Lower Cretaceous), and in Potwar, Patala shale (Paleocene) is considered as
the source rock. [4]
3.1.1

Sadkal field

It is discovered in June 1992 and is located Northern Potwar zone in Punjab Attock district.

This field reserve 738,000 bbl of oil.

In 1994, average production was 2819 b/d of il and 28.9 MMcfd of gas.

3.1.2

Missa Keswal field

This field is discovered in August 1991. It is located at East Potwar on OGDCs Gujar
Khan E.L. in the Rawalpindi district of Punjab.

This field were 34.73 million bbl of oil original reserves. In 1994, the production was 4930
b/d of oil and 8.094 MMcfd of gas.

Reservoir Pressure was 4204 psia.

3.1.3

Fimkassar oil field

This field is located at southern Potwar on OGDCs Fimkassar concession in Punjabs

Chakwal district.

This field is and oil producer field.

Original reserves were 30 million bbl.

In 1994, production was 2562 b/d of oil.

3.1.4

Dhurnal field

It is discovered in March 1984. It is located in the triangle zone of North Potwar zone in
the Attcok district of Punjab.

Reserves of this field were 50.94 million bbl.

In 1994, production of this field were 2993 b/d of oil and 9.564 MMcfd of gas.

3.1.5

Adhi field

It is discovered in February 1978 and located at East Potwar in Rawqalpindi.

Original reserves of this field were 116 bcf of gas and 10.221 million bbl of condensate.

In 1994, production were 16.817 MMcfd of gas and 2449 b/d of condensate and 62 mteric
tons/day LPG.

3.2 Lower Indus basin

The Sindh Monocline (SM)is the part of a Lower Indus Basin situated in the south eastern corner
of the Pakistan. It is known for its several oil and gas fields located in the southern, central east
and south eastern districts of Sindh province. These oil accumulations have been trapped in tilted
fault blocks in the Early Cretaceous Lower Goru sandstone and sealed by overlying shale and marl
facies of Upper Goru Formation. [5] Bari field, Kadanwari field, Pasakhi field, tando Alam field,
Khaskeli field and Sui field are located at Lower Indus basin. [1]
3.2.1

Bari field

It is discovered in 1992 and its location is Hyderabad district, Sindh.

Reserves of this field are 2.531 billion bbl of oil.

Production of this field was 2275 b/d of and 537 Mcfd of gas.

It is the first stratigraphic hydrocarbon accumulation discovered on the Badin block.

3.2.2

Kadanwari field

It is discovered in August 1989. It is located on the platform of Thar in the Lasmo group
in Khairpur district of Sindh.

Original resrves of this field is 728 bcf of gas.

3.2.3

Pasakhi filed

In July 1989, this field was discovered and its location is in Badintrough on OGDCs
Sanghar P.l in Hyderabad.

Its areal extent is 1.3 sq km having vertical closure is 53m.

5.5 by 2 km is the minimum areal extent with the vertical amplitude 120m.

This field original reservoir were 20.16 miillion bbl.

In 1994 production were 919 b/d of oil.

3.2.5

Khaskeli field

The discovery of this field were in 1981 at the badin trough on UTPs Khaskeli in
Hyderabad.

The oil field covers 17.8 sq kmand the UTP was the first group who found oil in Lower
Indus basin.

Original reserve were 8.196 million bbl.

In 1994, production were 684 b/d of oil and 331 Mcfd of gas.

3.2.6

Sui field

This giant field was discovere in 1952. It is located in the Marri Bugti in Sibi district of
Balochistan on PPls Sui M.L.concession.

Permeability 35 md and the porosity is 6.7 to 28.4%.

This field gas containing methane 90%, ethane 1.2%, carbon dioxide 4.5% and nitrogen I
3.5%.

Original reserves of this field were 8.624 tcf of gas.
