Real Journey to the Center of the Earth project DUE Monday, November 7, 2016
Learning Target: I can explain the earth's interior through different media representations.
Imagine taking a journey to the center of the Earth. Thats what happens in the novel,
Journey to the Center of the Earth, written by Jules Verne in 1864. At that time, scientists knew
almost nothing about Earths interior. Was it solid or hollow? Hot or cold? People speculated widely.
Vernes novel described the adventures that took place during a scientific expedition to explore
Earth. During the expedition, the explorers travel through tunnels and caves until they reach a
strange sea that is lit by a miniature sun. Your task is to develop your own story about taking a
journey to the center of the Earth. You now know more about the Earths interior after the
research that you will complete. Therefore, your story should be scientifically accurate.
Describe (own words) what happens as you travel through the Earth. What layers do you travel
through? Make sure you include all of the layers in your product and in the correct order. How long
does each take to travel through a layer? What distance did you have to travel? Be creative, but
make sure to include accurate facts. All writing should NOT include the actual WORDS/TERMS
but descriptions of ALL the words.

Ideas for the Project

Guidelines ALL work must be TYPED

Dioramas/ Display

Is 3 dimensional, has the 4 main layers and additional layers

clearly shown or used in some way that the observer understands
the concept, colorful, described in your own words. Includes all
information typed on separate paper attached to project. Each

Pop-up Book/ Children's book

layer should be clearly defined in the diorama.

Short story include a creative cover for your book, a table of
contents, images/ pictures and introductory & conclusion. The
book must include a minimum of 12 pictures (2 per main layer)
and follow the plot diagram.

Your book needs to include plot, setting, characterization,
Author

conflict, and resolution. Remember these words should NOT be

used in your story. You must write (type) these elements into
your story just like the author of the book . All 5 of these
literature elements need to be clearly defined to receive full credit.

What to do for All OPTIONS Must include:

(You may NOT use the words listed

but describe in your own words)

a.

A description of each part of the Earths structure

i. Crust
ii. Continental crust
The description includes:
iii. Oceanic crust
C omposition
iv. Lithosphere
Distance across (thickness)
v. Asthenosphere
State of matter
vi. Mesosphere
Temperature
vii. Mantle (Convection Currents) Your choice any important fact to make your
project stand out (See list below)
viii. Inner core

Viiii.

Outer core

You need to include:

1. Crust (Image or explanation without using the word)
a. What are the most common elements in the crust?
b. What types of crust are there?
i. Continental
1. Where is it found?
2. How thick is it?
3. What are the most common elements/rocks in the continental crust?
Are those elements/rocks lighter elements or denser elements/rocks?
ii. Oceanic
1. Where is it found?
2. How thick is it?
3. What are the most common elements/rocks in the oceanic crust? Are
those
elements lighter elements/rocks or denser elements/rocks?
2. Lithosphere (label or explain briefly) (includes all of the crust and the top
solid part of the mantle)
a. What and where is the lithosphere?
b. Plate tectonics
c. Explain what the physical property of the lithosphere is like (solid,
melted, etc.)
3. Asthenosphere (label or explain briefly)
a. What and where is the asthenosphere?
b. Explain what the physical property of the asthenosphere is like (solid,
melted, etc.)
c. How does the asthenosphere help cause plate tectonics?
4. Mantle (Image or explanation without using the word)
a. What are the most common elements in the mantle?
b. What type of rock is the mantle made of?
c. What is the density of the mantle?
d. Explain what the physical property of the mantle is like (solid, melted,
etc.)
e. Explain mantle convection (include the term plumes)
f. What is the thickness of the mantle?
g. What is the mesosphere? What is the function/purpose? (Label or
explain briefly)
5. Core (Image or explanation without using the word)
a. What are the most common elements in the core?
b. What is the density of the core?
c. Why is our core hot?
d. Outer Core
i. Explain what the physical property of the outer core is like? (Solid,
melted, etc.)
ii. How does the outer core cause the magnetic field for Earth?
e. Inner Core

i. Explain what the physical property of the inner core is like? (Solid,
melted, etc.)
ii. What is the temperature of the inner core?
iii. Why is the inner core a solid, even though it is hot enough to
melt?
