Subject: Re: Spring 2016 Gear train Design
INTRODUCTION
Final result performed in the competition was fine we were there before time and did as many tries
to feel good before the competition begins and our results were very impressive. For our cost it
was $28.25 and we used concept 1.and we were able to lift almost 26 lbs. for the highest and the
better performance.
DESIGN PROCESS STEP 0: MISSION STATEMENT
The purpose of this of this project is to design and build a gear train that lifts a known weight a
given distance in the shortest time. All while keeping costs low the customer and meeting them
needs.
DESIGN PROCESS STEP 1: CUSTOMER NEEDS
Shortest time possible, low cost, high weight, large traveling distance, finished quickly, team needs
reliability and performs the task the customer needs to complete.
DESIGN PROCESS STEP 2: TARGET SPECIFICATIONS
We are not going to uses these target specifications. The cost is unrealistic at one dollar. The
weight is also quite heavy and may destroy the gears and/or motor.
DESIGN PROCESS STEP 3: INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL SEARCH
The team should present the results from internal search. The requirement is documentation of a
complete discussion including each target specification. Follow guidelines and clearly label results
DESIGN PROCESS STEPS 4: CONCEPT GENERATION
With concept 1 the performance is high but the weight is to heavy for the motor being used for
this project. However, lowering the weight to within the limits of the motor the time will also
decrease which will increase the performance. Concept 2 uses less parts than concept 1 which
lowers the cost of the mechanism. Concept 2 lifts lower weight in the same time span.
DESIGN PROCESS STEP 5: CONCEPT SELECTION
Explain the decisions made for assigning a certain weight number to each customer need. Describe
here the final design and how you expect it to perform.

Additionally, provide a detailed depiction of the design and its key features (pulley, fixture, gear
ratio and overall layout of components). This could be accomplished with a photo of the design
built or under construction, a3D image, and/or an exploded view with labels. \
TEST RESULTS
Overall concept 1 appears to be the better design. It can lift larger weight and has higher
performance value than concept 2.

REDESIGN SUGGESTIONS
With concept 1 the performance is high but the weight is too heavy for the motor being used for
this project. However, lowering the weight to within the limits of the motor the time will also
decrease which will increase the performance. Concept 2 uses less parts than concept 1 which
lowers the cost of the mechanism. Concept 2 lifts lower weight in the same time span. Explain
the decisions made for assigning a certain weight number to each customer need. Describe here
the final design and how you expect it to perform.
GROUP ORGANIZATION
For the group organization it was very good we had meet after class in school in the library and
helped each other with sharing ideas and helping with designing with the group and went to home
depot together and bought the parts for this project and Adam was the one who build it.
CLOSING
I think since we got the first on this project first place I think we did good and spend all the time
we needed to make it perfect. I would like to work again with our group members because they
were helpful and great people. And for the performance we got I think that was perfect and we can
do better.
