Teacher Tips

Read the poem at the beginning of the week (you
can rewrite it on chart paper, display it using a
document camera, or project it right from your
computer).

Guess the covered word is a good ac?vity to start
with. You can use s?cky notes that are cut to the
correct size to t over the words and then project it
on the document camera, or you can write out the
poem on chart paper and cover the words up with
large s?cky notes (note: you will want to double up
on the s?cky notes otherwise they will be able to see
the words through the s?cky notes).

Reread the poem several ?mes as a shared reading
ac?vity. This helps to build uency, and sight word
recogni?on.

If you plan to use weekly poems you can create
folders to store the poems in so that students can do
partner reading with the poem throughout the
week.

Tip for the poem reconstruc?on/scramble page:
Advise students to reconstruct the poem on both the
front and the back of the page as there may not be
enough room on just the front.

Spring Showers
Pitter Patter, Pitter Patter
Drip Drip Drop
The rain came down
Like someone wringing out a mop
Pitter Patter, Pitter Patter
Splish Splish Splash
We heard thunder and lightning
A boom and a crash
Pitter Patter, Pitter Patter
Glip Glop Glop
We sloshed through the mud
Until the last drop
Pitter Patter, Pitter Patter
Where did you go?
The sun was shining so bright
It made a big rainbow
