Below you will find the expectations for middle school orchestra. I am looking forward to our first year!
After reading this handbook, please complete, print, and sign the attached form and return it to me by
September 23, 2016. PLEASE NOTE: ORCHESTRA IS A FULL YEAR COMMITMENT. Students
may not enroll in orchestra for only part of the year.
Preparation:
Be on time and prepared. Work as a team by respecting others, yourself, and property.
Attendance/Tardy Policy:
Attend ALL rehearsals and concerts. After four absences per semester, excused or unexcused, the student will be dropped from orchestra. All students success during rehearsals and concerts relies heavily
on attendance. Be on time, present, and ready to play by 3:15 pm. To be early is to be on time. To be on
time is to be late. To be late is unacceptable.
Policies:
Performances are an individual and team effort, as well as a product of many hours of practice. Just like
a great sports team performing a winning game, orchestra members must practice individual skills and be
present at the concert in order for the team to succeed. Attendance at all concerts and rehearsals is
mandatory. Concert dates, so far, for the 2016-2017 school year are:
December 14, 2016
February 18, 2017
May 17, 2017

Any additional concerts or events will be announced at least two weeks prior to concert date. Please put
these dates on your calendar to help your family plan for these events. If transportation is an issue, plan
for carpool now. ALL CONCERTS AND DRESS REHEARSALS ARE REQUIRED OF ALL ORCHESTRA
STUDENTS. It is very disappointing to have a member of our orchestra missing from the concert. This is
a successful program because EVERY member of the ensemble contributes to our team!
On concert night, students are expected to be in the greenroom, ready to warm up and tune, no later
than the assigned call time. No exceptions. Also expected is orchestra concert attire:
Black Button-up Shirt/ Black Dress
Dress Pants/Black skirt to ankles
Comfortable black shoes (no sandals or flip flops)
Any student who is absent from school may not participate in extracurricular activities that day. These
include, but are not limited to, band, choir, orchestra, sports, drama, etc. Students are reminded that
school rules and dress code apply at all extracurricular activities. Any student placed on suspension (either in or out of school) is not eligible to participate in or attend any extracurricular activities on the day of
suspension. Students who earn a referral or suspension will be dropped from orchestra. Please refer to

your Desert Sky Agenda for additional details. Students who earn four PRIDE hours per semester will
be dropped from orchestra.

We have read and will follow all classroom procedures and guidelines for Desert Sky Middle School Orchestra. We understand the obligations and responsibilities that are required of our child and of us in
making the band year successful.
We understand that the orchestra program is a year long commitment that will be honored for the entire
school year of 2016-2017, and that all orchestra rehearsals and performances are mandatory and will be
attended. Instrument choices are: Violin, Viola, Cello, String Bass.
We are aware of and will comply with all concert attire requirements and will make sure that we have the
required items for orchestra. We will have a fun and productive year in the Desert Sky Orchestra program
and will contact Mr. Manjarrez with any questions.
