Class Expectations:
Behavior: Students will be expected to always treat each other and their peers with respect. Any harassment
or bullying or anything of the sort will not be tolerated. Students are also expected to treat the equipment
with respect as if it were their own equipment. Failure to meet the behavioral expectations will result in
discipline from the teacher and/or the principal or administrator.
Attendance: Students are expected to show up to class each and every day. Valid excuses for absences include:
illness, doctors note, and family emergencies. Tardies will be counted as absences when the student has
missed more than 2 unexcused absences.
Electronic device policy: Students are not allowed to have electronics (any sort of cellular phone, Apple
product, laptop, etc.) in class unless specified by the teacher or if it is necessary for any projects used in class.
Examples of projects include: student-led listening lessons, ostinati projects, or the composition project.
Students may not text, call, Skype, or anything of the sort with their peers or people outside of class during
class time.
Academic integrity: Students are expected to do their own work and not copy, cheat, or plagiarize from
somewhere else. Failure to do so will lead to direct discipline from the principal and/or administrators and
failing the assignment and possibly the class.
Handing in assignments: All assignments will be due at the beginning of each period, including individual and
group assignments/projects.
Guidelines for classroom materials: Each student will be handed a notebook at the beginning of the semester.
This notebook will be used for writing down the students thoughts on listening activities in class. Sheet
music will also be provided if students feel the need to use it. However, students may bring their own if they
so desire.

Any school equipment and materials must be taken care of and treated with respect. Students may be
held liable for damage imposed on class materials and instruments if they were not taken care of.
Consequences: Failure to comply with the guidelines, the academic integrity, behavior policies, etc, will lead
to: discipline from the teacher to the student, discipline from the principal and/or administrators to the
student, failing grades, in-school or out-of-school suspension, or ultimately expulsion.
Philosophy: This class is meant to give students who do not normally have the opportunity to create and
experience music the chance to do so. Students will work together in groups daily to learn the basics of music
theory, learn to play the guitar, experiment with body percussion and everyday objects that can function as
percussion instruments, and then create or arrange a composition at the end of the course. This class is for all
students and each student will have the opportunity to create, experience, and in the process appreciate that
music can be done in many ways, shapes, and forms.
