7 Roles of Leadership

Creator
1. Middle Ages - alchemist - trying to create a higher state from a lower state.
2. Committees aren't good at creating. Individuals are better at creating things.
3. You need to create for people a bigger vision than they have for themselves.

Visionary
1. A picture of a better state.
2. The ability to see a future before it happens.
3. Logic and reason don't inspire people to action. You need to connect the head,
heart and body. And the way you do that is by communicating a picture that's
connected to a feeling.
4. A vision is more concrete than a reason.
5. Create a picture of how great it's going to be when you get the result, not a picture
of the struggle to get there.

Aligner
1. A mistake even experienced marketers make is for the headline to talk about one
thing, but then the offer doesn't quite align with it.
2. You'll see that people in a group often don't have their values, beliefs, etc., aligned.
3. One key is to figure out which way YOU are going, or which way the movement
needs to go, and ask yourself, "What kind of people could help make this thing
happen?"
4. Reality, identity, beliefs, values - these are the highest levels, and the levels most
people don't pay attention to.
5. The person who has the clearest view of their reality, and is the best at
communicating it to others, is the one whose reality will become the dominant
reality.
6. If someone isn't performing well, figure out where they want to go in a year or
two, and how if they get back on track it'll help them get to where they want to go.
a. This is aligning your needs, the businesses needs, and their needs.

2. Get the right people on the bus. The followers are just as important as the leaders.
Who are the right people?
a. Their values are aligned with the values of the leader.
b. They have the skill sets to get them to the goal.

Motivator
1. 2 types of power people:
a. I want power for my own selfish needs.
b. I want power so that I can do a lot of good for others. (Socialized Power)
2. Achievers are used to doing everything themselves. But to be a great leader, you
have to delegate and work through other people.
3. Affiliators (Charmers): if your primary goal is to be popular, you're unwilling to
make unpopular decisions. That's a problem in leadership.
4. The best leaders must know how to use power, achievement, and affiliation, and
when to use each.
a. They also need to know when to use the carrot, and when to use the stick.
5. People will follow you for 3 reasons:
a. Theyre attracted to your power.
b. Theyre attracted to your charm (Affiliation).
c. Theyre attracted to your cause and work ethic (Achievement),

Resolver Of Conflict
1. Conflict occurs on many different levels (within a person, between two people,
between groups, etc.).
2. As a leader, you may come into situations where there is a pre-existing conflict.
3. Many people automatically want to disagree and create conflict with what you're
saying. Instead of adding their perspective, they try to kill yours. They're looking
for some way to argue with you. A resolver doesn't do this.
4. Resolvers know deep in their minds that there is another side of the story that is
just as valid as their own. The resolver believes that we're all aligned at the highest
levels and let's seek that commonality. It's at the lower levels that conflict seems to
show up.
5. Most of the little will power we get each day is burned on inner conflict.

The Bringer From the Known to the Unknown

1. One of the keys to any successful leader is to be constantly alert for signs of
change, and react.

2. Be continually looking for and preparing for the unknown. It's one of the keys to
leadership.
3. When you bring the known to the unknown, people will get afraid. Be prepared.

Become a Conscious Role Model

1. If you do things just for you, other people are going to watch and imitate what
you do. They won't even know why.
2. Who do you need to become in order to facilitate this vision you want to create,
and help others achieve their highest good?
