THEME

Frankish 4

TEN WORDS
ISOLATED
1. far away from other places, buildings, or people; remote.
2. having minimal contact or little in common with others.
3. single; exceptional.
Personal Definition
The first word I chose for my proposal and ten words is Isolated or Isolation. Isolation is
removing yourself or being removed, from a situation/scenario. Being isolated is losing the
ability to communicate and interact with others. Being isolated can mean that you are separated
from your friends at school because youre in different classes, or maybe you are in different
countries entirely. This is the physical form that isolation can take. Then theres the mental form.
To be mentally isolated from others is to maybe not be entirely in tune with them. Being isolated
can also mean being separated from the physical world itself. It could mean the feeling you have
when you have a mental block and cant truly focus on what you need to at the moment. You
cant think properly and you are aware that you arent functioning at your best, but you know
there is nothing you can do. Your brain is a grey mush.
In short, being isolated is the feeling of separation you have from not only the physical
world but also the mental world. Its being trapped in a funk that seems to last forever.
WANDER
1. walk or move in a leisurely, casual, or aimless way

Frankish 5

2. move slowly away from a fixed point or place.

3. move or travel slowly through or over (a place or area).
Personal Definition
Ive always believed that the word wander is not one of moving slowly or casually, but
more of a word that represents to explore life in at your own pace. Its about taking a short while
to reflect on and live life in the moment. To wander is to follow your personal schedule in life,
not someone elses. Individuality is important to me, and without it, I believe that you lose one of
the most important aspects of your life: your identity. So continuing to wander is continuing to
be unique and different from those around you.
EXPERIENCE
1. practical contact with and observation of facts or events.
2. encounter or undergo (an event or occurrence).
Personal Definition
Experience is probably the most important word in this list to me personally. I regard it to
be the root of what life is all about and what everyone works so hard to earn. My definition of
experience is that it is the collection of knowledge, interactions, and exposure to society within
someones life. What people do with those experiences is what really matters. Furthermore, the
reason I value experience is because without it I would never be able to learn from my past, and
gain knowledge for the future. I actually categorize people into two groups; the first are the
unlucky few who move on, ignoring the potential impact it can have later on. The second are the
ones who learn from those experiences and utilize them later on in their lives, sometimes

Frankish 6

snowballing into a sort of transformation of the self. Without experience, there is no

transformation, which I also believe is essential to experiencing life to its fullest.
SHADOW
1. a dark area or shape produced by a body coming between rays of light and a surface.
2. used in reference to proximity, ominous oppressiveness, or sadness and gloom.
3. envelop in shadow; cast a shadow over.
4. follow and observe (someone) closely and typically secretly.
Personal Definition
The word shadow has played a major role in my life. It has many different meanings and
goes much deeper to me personally than its intended meaning. To be a shadow is to be something
that follows. Do you remember in Peter Pan when he kept losing his shadow and had to
constantly reattach it to himself? That is how I feel some people in life are, needing to be a
shadow and attach themselves to something or someone. Sometimes they are forced to become a
shadow. But those who are the shadows, they become stuck and attached, making it difficult for
them to move on/succeed without those they are attached to. Anything a shadow accomplishes in
life loses its effectiveness due to the fact that they are literally being overshadowed by something
else.
ANXIETY
1. a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something
with an uncertain outcome.
2. desire to do something, typically accompanied by unease.

Frankish 7

Personal Definition
Anxiety plagues the emotions of everyone on the planet at one point or another. Its just a
part of human nature. But the power in which it effects everyone is what differentiates how much
it can actually control your life. Anxiety can take charge over your actions and emotions in such
a forceful way that you cannot function properly. Take, for example, a simple act as asking
someone out on a date. At first, youre all confident and know exactly what to say, but soon
enough, the anxiety begins to kick in. You start to second guess yourself, reminding yourself of
your infinite list of flaws. With anxiety ruling your life, you realize you dont have a future at all,
uncertain about doing anything ever because you need that safety net beneath you in case it
doesnt work out.
CAGE
1. a structure of bars or wires in which birds or other animals are confined.
2. confine in or as in a cage.
Personal Definition
A cage is a restriction that is placed upon yourself. The idea of being trapped is
implemented into your head and you begin to feel as though there is no way out. Sometimes,
your cage comes from a restriction that is out of your control, but other times its because you
placed it there yourself unconsciously. Everyone has their own cage, and most of the time they
are able to escape it. For some, their cage is a blessing, providing them with some sort of safety
net or comfort zone. But for others, it becomes a burden, stopping them from accomplishing
what they want to in life.

Frankish 8

ESCAPE
1. break free from confinement or control.
2. fail to be noticed or remembered by (someone).
Personal Definition
To escape is to remove yourself from something that was causing a negative impact on
you. The want to escape is much different than the need to escape, as one means you dont enjoy
where you are at in the moment, whilst the other has a more desperate tone. Escaping can mean
just not wanting to be a part of a conversation anymore so you leave, or it can mean you cant
stand the thought of living in your city anymore as you believe its strangling you
(metaphorically of course) and ridding you of any desire to be happy in life. Escape is the
freedom and paradise you seek from wherever you are at the present moment.
TEMPORARY
1. lasting for only a limited period of time; not permanent.
Personal Definition
Temporary is probably the one word that is most prominent in my life at this moment. By
the end of high school, you begin to realize that almost everything in life is temporary, it just
depends on how long it lasts. All the connections you make with people, the time you spend with
them, the feelings you have towards others, its almost all temporary. Life is fleeting, but what
you decide to do with your time is how you know you lived it to the fullest. Temporary can be a
water tattoo you put on for spirit day and wash off later, or it can be the feelings you once had
towards someone.

Frankish 9

PURPOSE
1. the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.
2. have as one's intention or objective
Personal Definition
Purpose is probably the most important word of my ten as it describes most of my theme
itself. A question asked at least once in everyones life is What is my purpose? Why do I exist?
A purpose is a reason to live. Everyone has a purpose in life, but for some, their interpretation of
a purpose is clouded by their judgement of what they deem as important, not what is actually
important in life. A purpose can be as simple as waking up every day and making money to
continue to survive, or it can be providing support to others who are really in need of it. Some
people are given a purpose, while others create their own, but no matter what, a purpose is a
reason to live.
TRAVEL
1. make a journey, typically of some length or abroad.
Personal Definition
To travel is to explore life outside your comfort zone. Its experiencing new things and
not being afraid to go out and see the world from a different perspective. To travel is to enrich
your life in new ways, learning more about the world around you and making a personal
connection to other places or people. To truly find yourself, one must make a journey of some
kind, whether its mental, physical, or both. Life is about the journey and not the destination, so
to make every moment count, one must try to travel as much as possible.

STUDIO HABITS OF MIND

Develop Craft
Technique: learning to use (e.g. viewfinders, brushes) materials (charcoal, paint) Learning
artistic conventions (e.g. perspective, colour mixing)
Studio Practice: Learning to care for tools, materials, and space
For my technique of filmmaking, I plan to use my camera and equipment to the best of
my ability. The equipment will help to not only capture the actors as they perform but will also
be an integral part of telling the story. As well, the editing equipment I currently own will be
used, but my expertise in it will be enhanced through the use of tutorials online and new
techniques I learn from movies which influence me. Learning from numerous films which
inspire me, from others with experience and from first hand experience has helped me develop
into the filmmaker I am today.
As for the studio practice, I have knowledge of how to care for my equipment. I also like
to keep my footage organized which will be very useful when it comes to assembling it into the
final product. When filming, keeping care of the cars and actors will be essential to make sure
they are performing at their best.
Engage and Persist
Learning to embrace problems of revelance within the art world and/or of personal importance,
to develop focus and other mental states conductive to working and persevering at art tasks

Frankish 12

Current issues are a very common theme of modern movies as they not only relate to the
viewers watching the film but also help define what was happening during that period of time in
history. As of right now, there are several films that have come out within the past 20 years that
deal with mental issues, as this has been a hot topic of discussion in those years. This relates to
me directly because my film is a coming of age story. This means that it represents someone who
is beginning to make that transition to having little to no responsiblities, to becoming an adult
and having a lot of responsibilities.
As for my mental state and focus, while working on this film, I plan to eat, breathe, sleep
and wake up all while thinking about this film. Whether its new techniques I want to explore, or
changes to the plot itself, this film will always be the biggest thing on my mind at all times. But
the issue with this is that when you think about something like this for so long, you become
bored and develop a sort of artistic tunnel vision. So to try and counteract that, I plan on
producing small, easy to make, short films (1-2 minutes). This will keeo my creative juices
flowing and help me gain experience for my short film. As well, I will make sure to get several
opinions numerous times whilst creating the film itself, that way my vision for this film wont
become too narrow.
Envision
Learning to picture mentally what cannot be directly observed and imagine possible next steps in
making a piece
Envisioning how a film will eventually look is almost impossible. But envisioning an
idea is what begins the process of creating it. For me, I envisioned the final scene of my short
film first, as I felt it would have a lasting impact on the viewer and was a perfect ending to a

Frankish 13

coming of age journey. It raises just enough questions to leave the ending to interpretation, while
also providing a satisfying conclusion to the characters struggle through the journey. I then
worked off that ending scene, thinking of different ways to reach that point in the film. I always
knew the character would end up alone, but also needed a companion he had somewhere along
the way to assist him. The several flow charts I created for myself provided me with a vision for
how I wanted the story to play out. They are included in the process section of the proposal.
Express
Learning to create works that convey an idea, a feeling, or a personal meaning
To convey my theme, which is a journey for a purpose, I plan to use several forms of art
to convey a feeling of searching, provoke an emotion from the audience, and explain how it all
relates to my own personal journey in life. These forms of art include the colour of the film, the
emotion the actors are trying to convey/provoke, and the film techniques used to explain the
significance and motivation behind each aspect. Before any of this happens, I will plan it all out
through the use of the script itself and storyboards to get an idea of how everything will look and
feel. These will also provide clarity to those involved and hopefully enhance the final product.
The script is included in the script portion of the proposal and an example of the storyboards are
included in the process section of the proposal.
Observe
Learning to attend to visual contexts more closely than ordinary looking requires, and thereby
to see things that otherwise might not be seen
In film, details are key. But details mean nothing if they cannot be understood or seen
clearly by the viewer. Through the use of lighting and the positioning of the actors/cameras,

Frankish 14

details can become an integral part of the story, helping reveal major plot points and advancing
the story in a creative way. The symbolism of objects and metaphors are very uselful in this
sense, as they require you to look closer in order to understand the underlying theme of the film.
Therefore, to catch the attention of the viewer, I have decided to include a detail which will be
super obvious in the beginning. This way, they will hopefully be on guard the entire movie,
trying to understand and decipher the meaning of the film, all because of the simple detail which
sparked this curiosity in the beginning.
Reflect
Question and Explain: Learning to think and talk with others about an aspect of ones work or
working process
Evaluate: Learning to judge one's own work and working process, and the work of others in
relation to standards on the field
Having an understanding of film and what has been accomplished before helps me gain
an understanding of what works and what doesnt. But what assists me the most in increasing my
understanding of film is having experience, whether its first hand or derived from others.
Therefore, communication throughout the community of film is vital to reaching a higher
standard of your own work. Clarity is crucial for not only helping others improve their work but
also improve your own work. Therefore, I will be asking for suggestions from those working on
the project and outside of the project itself to ensure that the final product is the best it can be.
Asking for outside sources to provide input can also help myself realize that I am not a perfect
human being. I can make mistakes, and its better that those mistakes are brought to my attention
early on so that the final product is the best it can be. Holding myself to the high standards

Frankish 15

constantly will hopefully make me reach higher and try things I never would if I settled for
average.
Stretch and Explore
Learning to reach beyond ones capacities, to explore playfully without a preconceived plan, and
to embrace the opportunity to learn from mistakes and accidents
As I have stated numerous times, I believe experience is one of the most important
aspects of life. Its something all future jobs will ask for, and what all humans strive to gain in
the end. But to gain experience, one must be willing to make a few mistakes along the way. So I
guarantee I will make numerous mistakes during the process of producing this short film. As
well, I believe that the greatest creations in the art world derive from spontanuity. But the issue
with film is that to make sure everything falls into place correctly, one must plan everything
down to the smallest detail. Now a way I will work around this plan will be to give the actors
freedom to place their own personal touch on the ch22aracters. As well, plans will most likely
change while on set because one shot may not look as good as previously thought, but it may
then be replaced by another shot later on. These things are unpredictable, but I will embrace
these challenges as they come and hope to either create something interesting or learn from my
mistakes during this process and try to grow from the experiences.
Understand Art World
Domain: Learning about art history and current practice
Communities: Learning to interact as an artist with other artists (i.e. in classrooms, in local ats
organizations, and across the art field) and within the broader society

Frankish 16

Film is a very broad form of art. It comes in many different genres and styles, each
containing a unique look upon life and art itself. As many of the best directors of all time have
said, the best way to learn about film is to watch and understand what has been done before. I
have taken this practice to heart, trying my hardest to branch out and appreciate all genres/types
of films out there. From the first films of our generation which defined the art form, all the way
up to recent and modern masterpieces which expanded upon those innovations to heighten the art
form to a whole new level.
When creating a film, it has always been a personal mission of mine to try and convey the
theme/message of my film with others in a way which everyone can relate. For those who are
currently involved in the field of film, I try to convey this message in a more complicated
manner, such as using certain camera techniques, placement of objects/actors and the symbolism
of each object included in the film. For those who are a part of the broader society, I try to
broaden the message itself, allowing everyone to not only understand my personal meaning
behind the message but also have their own personal interpretations of the film.

Frankish 17

PERSONAL INFLUENCES
Inspiration can come from many places and can hit you at the most peculiar times. It can
be a quiet roar that slowly builds up over time, or it can sneak up on you. The inspiration for my
theme, which deals with the Journey for a Purpose, is a combination of many different
experiences which have led up to where I am currently in life.
Siblings

Frankish 18

Being the youngest of four can be a rough time. For one, youre always called the baby of
the family, and you often end up wearing everyones old clothes. Being the youngest also has a
lot of benefits. I always had someone to support me no matter what. I was never really lonely as
a kid, and I got to watch PG-13 movies when I was 12 (I know, I was a badass). But the best part
came in the form of experience. I began experiencing things which none of my friends wouldnt
for years. I got to know what graduation would be like three times. I got to know how much high
school would suck. I got to know how much studying is involved to get a good mark (and a bad
one, thanks parker). And I got to experience what
it was like to figure out what you want to do with
your life. My three siblings chose completely
different professions in life, but they all reached
these professions by going on some sort of
journey. One followed her ex-boyfriend to UofT
for nursing, shes now a nurse. One followed her
boyfriend to Vancouver for skating, she now
works in PR. One didnt take school seriously at
first and spent all his time training to save lives
while working as a camp counselor or ski patroller, he is now at Seneca for firefighting. The
different paths they all took provided me with a broader idea of how people can start the same
but can branch off and become their own unique brand.
Grandmother and Depression
Grandparents are an incredible resource when it comes to experiences. My grandmother
lived a very interesting life which she described to me in incredible stories. At one point in life,

Frankish 19

she even worked at her own ice cream shop. I have fond memories of spending time with her,
watching old classic movies such as Singin in The Rain and some of Hitchcocks finest work.
When she passed away several years ago, I was still pretty young. I had spent a lot of time with
my grandma, which made the news of her passing very hard for me to hear. The death of a loved
one is never easy, but for my mother, it was one of the hardest things for her to deal with, and
continue to deal with to this day. I feel everyone in life becomes depressed at some point in their
life, but how we deal with that depression is what sets people apart. Those who grieve and come
to terms with their depression are able to move on in a sense, and those who bury their feelings
deep inside and refuse to deal with them seem to become trapped in the black hole of depression.
At one point, it felt as if my mother would become consumed by that black hole, which was very
difficult on my family at the time. The mood swings, the irrational thinking and the outbursts
were just a few of the side effects. Being the youngest, it was kind of hard to process what she
was going through because I didnt truly understand how hard it mustve been for her. But after a
couple of years, I began to realize the magnitude of the situation. And as my siblings began to
leave the house one by one, it seemed to be getting worse. So bad in fact that one of my sisters
moved to a different province and stopped speaking to my mother altogether. So my first-hand
experience with death and depression has provided me with insight on how emotions and
feelings can disrupt our daily lives, making it difficult to continue functioning as you were
before. To sum it all up really, transformation comes in many forms.

Global Perspectives
After witnessing my siblings each transform, and my mother change, you may be
wondering if I have experience that personally yet. And the answer is, yes, I have. A few months

Frankish 20

ago, I created this short documentary called What is Global? for the program I was in called
Global Perspectives. I know I dont have to explain this program to either of you as you have
both been a part of it, but there is one thing I would like to share about the program itself. There
is no denying that the program changes you. It literally breaks you and replaces it with someone
else, someone new. And soon enough, this someone becomes you, and the old you becomes a
fading memory of the past. So when I had the idea for What is Global? we were currently in
the busiest week of our lives, the week before Germany and Global Presents. So I didnt really
have much time to be creative and pursue my passion as I just wanted to get on that plane. But
when I was watching the first video I created for the program called #Global2016, I was
stunned at how completely different everyone had become. People I had never even spoke to at
that point in time had become some of my closest friends. And I even remember thinking while
doing those interviews Man, this program is just a bunch of academic perfectionists who had
never had a real life experience in their entire lives. And boy was I wrong. After witnessing the
26 other students in the program literally go through the equivalent of hell in school with me,
something had changed along the way. Those thoughts I once had were gone and replaced by
thoughts of Holy shit, these kids are the coolest fucking people in the world. So I decided,
since it was the last week of Global and
all, why not just stress myself out to the
max and create a short documentary to
display the transformation that occurred
during this program. Which is exactly
what I tried to do.

Frankish 21

Which brings me to what this story is all about. During the interviews I conducted with
the other Globalites, there was a single question which stood out to me. It was What is Global to
you? When asked this question, everyone, and I mean EVERYONE paused for at least a
minute. Like I literally have 20 minutes of footage of people just sitting there contemplating the
question and trying to find the words. But one thing no one really noticed is that during this
entire process, I never answered this question myself. Global was such an important part of my
life, meaning it is also an important part of my theme as well. So for the first time, I wanted to
describe what I really believe Global is to me.

Frankish 22

Global was the most incredible fluke of my entire

life. Like, I spent all my luck, and then some, getting into the
program itself. I just arrived back from camp a week before
school when I received a message from a friend saying I
should apply. I had never heard of the program itself, but I
did so anyways. After the entire experience, the all-nighters,
the stressful projects, the missing out on social events, the
internal drama, the sacrifice of my normal life, and the cups
of coffee, it was over. But there was something that happened during those 5 months. Something
had changed inside of me. Without even realizing it, I was happier than I had ever been before.
My brain had been stimulated more than it had ever been before. After spending the first
semester of Grade 11 missing out on an entire month of school because of skipping class, I had
never intentionally wanted to miss a day of school during Global. I had transformed into this
creative, thoughtful academic student that wanted to always take it to the next level. So to me,
Global was the journey I had taken, unknowingly, to bettering myself and truly realizing how
important my decisions are in my own life. I may not have found my purpose yet, but I finally
knew that I was on the right path.

Parents and Achievements

My parents have always been two of my own personal heroes. They are probably some of
the smartest, kindest and most creative people you will ever meet. They both have always
supported me from the beginning and have had a huge influence on my life. But that doesnt
mean my relationship with them is perfect. As mentioned before, my mother has been known to

Frankish 23

make irrational decisions and isnt always the easiest person to deal with. This has taught me
how to be patient and more passive than most people, which means I can handle more emotional
weight. My father, on the other hand, is exactly like me. Having been married to her for almost
30 years takes a lot of patience and he seems to have an endless supply. Sure, there have been
some rough times, but he has stuck with it no matter what. He also has the greatest sense of
humor, which I pride myself in getting from him. His creativity knows no limits, as he is
constantly searching for new ways to better improve his show.
My father is an incredible person, there is no doubt about that, but there is also some
negativity which comes from being his son. A question I am asked at least once by almost
everyone I meet is Hey, isnt your dad on that TV news thing? Yeah, he is. And just like that,
the relation I have to my dad makes me feel alienated from others. But it doesnt stop there.
Being the youngest sibling of four, all of which have accomplished something before me, makes
it that much harder to be an individual without any ties to someone Im related to. Being unique
is a quality which I strive to achieve, trying desperately to be heard in a sea full of screaming
voices. This is very difficult to do when those who you are tied to have achieved something great
before you. Its almost as if you are being overshadowed by them, which isnt a bad thing for
some people, but for me, it means I have to work just that much harder to get noticed.

Idle
The current title of my short film. This word can mean many things, but for the purpose
of this film, I believe it means to be stuck in a metaphorical rut. To be idle in life is to be
functioning but not moving forward (or backward) at all. This is how I feel in life at most times,

Frankish 24

but to explain this feeling to another is very difficult for me for some reason, as verbal
communication isnt always a strong point of mine. So Im going to use a metaphorical example
to try and explain this feeling. Say, for example, youre stuck in traffic. The snail like pace along
with the frustration of having to wait on others to progress is a common hatred associated with
traffic itself. At this point, youre idling in your car, wasting your gas, and your time. In life,
traffic doesnt occur all the time, you only come upon it every so often on the highway or major
roads. Comparing this scenario to life, the car idling and progressing slowly is you. Youre
wasting your energy and your time because you are working as hard as you would on a normal
flowing road, but you arent progressing as far or as fast as you would like to. The cars ahead and
behind you represent what is preventing you from completing what you would like, whether it be
writers block or those you work with not performing to their full potential, preventing
themselves and others from progressing. This is just a part of life. But for some, there is no real
traffic. There is no snail like pace. There is only the car on an empty road staying idle without
moving. There is potential for the car to move, but for whatever reason, the operator of the
vehicle doesnt move. There may even be cars passing, sometimes stopping to see if everything
is ok. But even with encouragement and motivation, the car doesnt budge. This is the premise
behind my film, to try and express this feeling of not idling and how the car transitions from not
moving at all, to finally finding the gas pedal. So the message I would like to convey in my short
film while telling my own personal story is to not be idle in life.

ARTISTIC INFLUENCES
DIRECTORS
Steven Spielberg Known for films such as Jurassic Park, JAWS, and E.T.: The Extra
Terrestrial. Steven Spielbergs unique style of filmmaking along with his imaginative stories
combine to create some of the most visually appealing and entertaining films of all time. His
constant desire to use practical effects over computer generated ones give his films a much more
realistic feel and allows audiences to become more engrossed with them.
Stanley Kubrick Known for films such as A Clockwork Orange, The Shining
(REDUM!), and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Stanley Kubricks films are known as some of the
greatest of all time, which makes Mr. Kubrick one of the greatest directors of all time. His focus
on the development of the Steady Cam and its implementation in one of his most iconic films,
The Shining, has benefited filmmakers everywhere.

Frankish 26

Wes Anderson Known for films such as The Grand Budapest Hotel, Fantastic Mr.
Fox, and The Darjeeling Limited. Wes Anderson is a director who recently stepped into the
spotlight with his visually appealing
films. His unique style accompanied
with his awkward humor make for
some of the most entertaining films
I have seen in the last few years. His
use of 90 degree camera pans and centering of most shots are also a bizarre but rewarding
combination.
The combination of these directors different styles and techniques has a huge influence
on how I plan on producing my short film. An example of this is how I have purchased a yelangu
s60t stabilizer for my DSLR camera, which I hope I can use as effectively as Kubrick does. I
have grown up watching these directors movies, being entertained for years by the pieces of art
they create. The countless nights Ive spent up until 3am just to finish one of their films have
engraved these directors masterpieces in my mind. I believe that today, the work I produce is a
product of being inspired at such a young age by these directors.
FILMS/TV/OTHER FORMS OF MEDIA
Fight Club A man who hates his job/life begins a club about fighting with a mysterious
man. Probably has one of my favourite OH F*CK moments of any film.
Whiplash An up and coming jazz drummer is pushed beyond his limits by a psychotic
music teacher who has a unique teaching style. One of the greatest representations of the Heros

Frankish 27

Journey that I have witnessed on the screen. The symbolism is just bursting in this movie, and
the justification of evil is brilliantly implemented.
Breaking Bad An over qualified high school science
teacher who decides to pursue a different career in
cooking meth after
receiving some life changing news. This is what happens when
a great story is paired with incredible directing, stunning
cinematography and spectacular acting. This TV series is
absolutely radiating with symbolism and is probably the closest thing to perfection you can find
on TV.
What these three entertainment pieces have in common is that the main character is
unhappy with who they are at that particular moment. You have the unhappy, emotionless
narrator from Fight Club, the wannabe dreamer that is willing to do anything just to be the
greatest, even sacrifice his passion for music itself, from Whiplash, and the overqualified teacher
that decides to use his skills for his own personal gain from Breaking Bad. All three of these
characters seek a change in their lives, but they are also struggling to find what their purpose is.
The journey all three go through may differ at times, but in the end of all three stories, a purpose
is found. This has a strong influence on how I want to tell the story of IDLE.
This brings me to what type of story I want to tell. The genre I am basing my film off of
is Drama. The next list of Movies/TV Shows/Other Forms of Media is where I draw my
inspiration from and will most likely have a large influence on the final product.
The Breakfast Club

Frankish 28

The classic cult film that reminded many what it was like to be back in high school without an
idea in the world of what they wanted to do in life. But for some people like me, this movie was
a glimpse into another generation and showed me just how clueless they were too. The
transformation the teenagers go through together in the library during their detention is a great
representation of how I want my characters to evolve in my film.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
The story of a struggling teen with a dark past as he tries to find his way through his first year of
high school. The inspiration I draw from this film is the progression of time, the characters
motives for everything they do, and how each action has a reaction in the film.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
One of my favourite travel films. The story of how a quiet, introverted man who works at LIFE
magazine is forced outside of his comfort zone to not
only find a lost photo but also find himself. The visuals

in

this film are incredible, especially the use of colour. The

progression the film takes from the dark, blueish
colouring as it transitions with the character itself into a warmer, saturated world is a great way
to display transformation and expansion of the self. I hope to utilize this technique in my film, as
it will hopefully start with a darker, more depressing mood, and as the film picks up, will begin
to warm up and lighten the mood, filling the audience with a sense of hope.
Ferris Buellers Day Off
A teen decides to skip school and convinces his friends to do so as well, thus resulting in him
being a terrible influence. For some reason, this teen is the luckiest kid ever, as he encounters his

Frankish 29

dad SEVERAL times in the film without getting caught, and he is able to fit so many experiences
into a single day before his parents get home. As unrealistic as this film is, its an incredible story
and still remains as one of my favourite films of all time. The character Cameron is the
relatable high school kid who has no idea what he wants to do with his life, is always depressed
about it, and has a rough family life. This type of character is how I want to base one of my
characters off of. As well, the parallel plot line of Save Ferris is a great addition and has
inspired me to do something similar with my film.
American Beauty
A suburban dad becomes dissatisfied with his life and begins to break out of his self-created
confinement. A story to help remind us what is important in life. The slow build-up to Lesters
eventual transition from sad, depressed, suburban, unappreciated father to free, motivated, happy
man is a journey itself. The intersecting stories is a cool concept, which I would love to include
in my film, but not in such a diverse way.

Now, these 5 movies also have one thing in common, which is that they all include some aspect
of a coming of age or transformation into a different person story. The period of transitioning
from High School to the real world is a difficult time for most, and what these films are able to
do is capture that sense of confusion, anxiety, and excitement that comes with this maturing
period. With my film, I want to draw inspiration from these pieces of work and try to capture
those feelings as well. My film will be a sort of coming of age or transformation into a different
person type of story. The characters will be multi-layered with realistic emotions, motivations
and intentions.

PRODUCTION

Frankish 31

CHARACTERS
The characters depicted in this film are all representations of myself or something that has had a
significant impact in my life.
Noah The main character of my film. He is the closest representation of who I am as a person.
He is sarcastic, prefers to be alone and has this constant need to prove himself. This is probably
due to the shadow his father has cast over him because of his accomplishments. His father is also
always trying to control what Noah does, from the car he drives, to the roadways he should take.
Noahs Father Represents my father and siblings. The father of Noah, an accomplished driver
with a prestigious award for being the best driver in the zone. He himself suffers from depression
as his wife killed herself from depression as well. He expects big things from his son but is
always trying to control his future.

Frankish 32

Lily The supporting character of my film. She is the representation of all the relationships in
my life, whether they be romantic or just friendships. She is a very open, friendly person with no
real special/unique qualities about her.
Roundabout Driver Represents the effect depression has had on my life. This driver has no
real name, but still plays an integral part in the story. He/she is very cheerful and always has a
smile on their face. They refuse to accept help from others and only drives in circles.
Traffic Driver Represents the idea of not moving forward in life while someone or something
impedes my progress. This driver is very angry, short tempered and frustrated. He/she refuses to
move forward as well, but also is angry at others for not moving.

SETTING
This film will take place in an alternate world in which everyone drives for no apparent
reason. The reason for this constant state of driving represents people on their journey of life.
There are only roads, signs, traffic lights, people driving cars, and homes for people who have
metaphorically found their place of belonging. The cars are physical representations of people in
life themselves, and the drivers of the cars represent their inner thoughts, feelings, and emotions.
Important Locations
Some locations of importance in this film include:
Noahs home This is a cold, dark place full of shadows and his fathers achievements plastered
on the walls. It reeks of hopelessness and has this strange sensation of suffocation when people

Frankish 33

enter it. The windows are all barred and many would compare this sort of place to a prison, with
Noah and his father as its prisoners.
Noahs Car Noahs means of escape. His salvation from the prison of his home. The
appearance of this vehicle depends on what I can get to shoot with, but the interior of it will
include a variety of objects, such as a hula girl to represent his conscience, mirror dice, and some
jamming tunes.
Lilys Car Will most likely use Sidney Kamerbeeks car, as she is the one playing Lily. The car
itself has a few dents and looks to be kind of beat up. But there is no physical problem with it
that is preventing it from driving. This represents Lily giving up her old
journey/life/struggles/past experiences that have caused her to idle, and join Noah instead as he
helps her out.
Roads Very barren, seem to be endless. Surrounded by trees on all sides mostly, with the
occasional road sign or traffic light to break up the foliage. Intersections are common. Very
twisty and people can expect there to be numerous curves and bumps along the way. Represents
life itself.
Filming Locations
Noahs Home My house, friends homes, school
Noahs Car My car (is standard so might be an issue), Tylers car, dads truck, friends car
Lilys Car Sidneys car
Roads Innisfil roads, backroads, anything near a forest and not busy so as to give us more time
and space to film on them.

Frankish 34

Roundabout Park Place, near holly, might have to film at night and over the course of a few
days as people may be using them every so often. May also just use a parking lot with cones or
just someone circling a lamppost (which would be at BMC or Park Place)

OVERVIEW OF STORY
Idle is a personal story which deals with the theme of Journey for a purpose. What this
means is that in life, to find your purpose, you must first go through a journey of some sort,
whether it be mental or physical. With that concept in mind, I decided to make the story itself
very personal and close to my heart. Every character in this film represents either an aspect of
myself or other people I have interacted with within my life. Every single object, camera
movement, interaction or whatever else is planned right down to what it represents and the
significance it has had on my journey to find my own purpose in life.
We begin with the title. Now the opening of the film doesnt begin with the title, but for
now, I would like to explain the significance of it first. The dictionary defines the word Idle as
not active or in use, without purpose or effect, spend time doing nothing. Personally, I have
already defined what it means to be idle, and by doing so, I came up with the concept of this

Frankish 35

film. But within the film, the act of being idle reoccurs several times. Noah sits idle at every
crossroads he comes to, he finds Lily idling on the side of the road, he comes across people in
traffic idling, and even one of the last shots includes Noah idling before making his decision.
Noah, as it has been briefly explained during the character section of this proposal, is the closest
physical representation of myself in this film. So to experience so much idling during his journey
not only represents my fear of the act itself in life, but it also represents that I have experienced it
enough times in life already. To idle is to waste, which is the exact opposite of what I want to do
with my life.
The story begins with an opening montage using old news clips, V.O. work from news
broadcasters/my dad, and clips of the world going to shit. This is where the use of global
warming clips will also be placed. Using these snippets of footage from news, the story of how
the world descended into chaos and now the few remaining human beings in life are all either on
the roads trying to get to their destination, or cooped up in their homes waiting for their eventual
salvation. It will also include a clip of people getting awards, along with a V.O. explaining the
significance of the awards and their importance to society. These medals have a double meaning,
one of which will be explained later. The first meaning of the awards is a sort of irony, as people
work very hard to receive these useless acclaims. The awards represent the many useless
awards given out in our society. I am a strong believer that those who contribute to society
significantly should be praised for their contributions, but in a world like Noahs where there is
no real contributions in world, only abiding the rules of the road, these awards have no real
value, purpose or significance to them. Comparing this to achievements in our life further drives
the point that we, as an entire species, create our own purpose. So the creation and gifting of the
driving awards in Noahs world directly correlates with our world. For example, we give awards

Frankish 36

out for being the best actor, for saving someones life, or for being a dedicated employee of a
company for several years. This is nothing more than a trigger for people to think of our purpose
and the origin of these awards themselves.
The story then will reveal the title and cut to the main character, Noah, sitting in his car at
a crossroads. This shot is actually one of the final shots of the film and the story goes back to
beginning to explain how he got to this specific point in time. The camera will have close-ups of
specific objects in his car, such as a hula girl (which represents his conscience), the fuzzy dice on
the mirror (something Lily uses to personalize the car herself, which represents her influence on
his personality/the way she adds something to it) and the luggage in the backseat, showing that
some of the luggage is actually left behind from Lily (which represents his emotional baggage,
plus the emotional baggage she added to the pile when she left the relationship).
A V.O. or a cut will bring us back to the past. This is another montage, but one with more
time between cuts. It will explain the story of how Noah was raised. First, after his mother gave
birth to him in the back of his fathers car due to the snowstorm outside (I was born during one
of the worst snowstorms in Toronto), she falls into a deep depression and eventually commits
suicide by having the fumes of car kill her (represents depression as it is usually the inner
thoughts/horrors within the self which cause someone to do that sort of thing). Noah was then
raised solely by his father, constantly reminded of his achievements due to his fathers numerous
awards being plastered on the walls (represents my thoughts on being overshadowed). The house
is very dark (shadows, representing being overshadowed in life) and even has shutters which
look an awful lot like prison bars (represents the home feeling like a prison to Noah). Noah is
then being taught to drive, but his father keeps grabbing the wheel, trying to steer him (visual
metaphor for the control his father is trying to have over his decisions in life). Then, Noah gets

Frankish 37

ready to embark on a journey of his own, about to leave home. His father hands him his own
personal map (represents him trying to control the path he will take in life) and they both hug.
Noah leaves to embark on his journey with his emotional baggage included in the back seat. This
entire montage will be told in a short span of only a minute, with no words being spoken
between the two after his mothers death. This will represent a sense of disconnection and loss of
communication between the two, as well will hopefully be more visually appealing as the actors
will be forced to use their actions to express their thoughts and emotions.
After beginning his journey, Noah comes across an intersection. He can either choose to
go left or right, which is indicated by the actor moving his head both ways and the cut to each
direction. At this intersection, Noah will come across a girl (Lily) idling in her vehicle at the side
of the road. He offers her a ride (a representation of beginning a relationship with her) and she
accepts. She puts her bags in the car to go along with his, adds the dice to his mirror, and they
look at the directions together. She suggests going left, while he pulls out his fathers map and
goes right because thats the way his father indicated to go. She mentions this, saying he doesnt
always have to follow the map.
Noah and Lily then come across a roundabout. There is a single driver going around in a
circle with a positive expression on their face (see character and intersecting stories sections to
understand the significance of this character). Noah goes with him/her for a bit, rolling down his
window to ask if he/she is ok. He/she says yeah, so Noah decides to go on. Lily gets angry,
saying he/she needed help, but Noah says he/she didnt. This will result in the drive being bumpy
and curvy, representing their relationship and this particular section of his journey.
Noah and Lily abruptly come to a stop when they discover a traffic jam out of nowhere.
The car in front of them has their window down and is very frustrated/mad (see character and

Frankish 38

intersecting stories sections to understand the significance of this character). Noah and Lily pull
up beside the car and ask why they just dont pass the other cars. This will reveal there is only
two cars ahead of him idling for no apparent reason. The angry driver says that it isnt what
youre supposed to do and that you should just wait for them to go first. Noah and Lily continue
on, discovering that the cars are also stopped at a shadow, refusing to move past it (this
represents me being afraid to step back into someones shadow and also how I am afraid of going
into the unknown in life until someone else shows me the way. Lily and Noah continuing shows
that Im not that way anymore because of their ability to pass not only the cars, but also pass
through the shadow).
Lily becomes angry that they didnt stop to help those people through the shadow, to
which Noah says that they would never make it to where theyre going if they stopped to help
every single person along the way. At this point, they come to a bumpy intersection and Noah
pulls his map out. Lily gets angry and rips the map in half (map represents his fathers career
path/journey in life, Noah was trying to mimic it to get the same results. Destroying the map not
only shows the end of the relationship between Lily and Noah, but also the connection to his
fathers path, allowing Noah to finally be free to be unique). Noah, completely frozen, sits there
staring at his destroyed directions. Lily then says she wants to ride solo, causing Noahs car to
stop moving just like Lilys car when he met her.
With Lily gone and Noahs map destroyed, he has nothing. Lily left some of her bags in
the back seat as well. This brings us back to the first shot of Noah in the film before the
flashback began. Noah tries to piece his map back together, but is unsuccessful. He then reaches
into the glove box and pulls out a piece of white paper and a marker. He draws the current
intersection in front of him on the paper, then proceeds to draw another line forward. This will

Frankish 39

then reveal that the forest in front of him that was once there is now gone to reveal another road.
This represents Noah finally being able to become someone unique as he literally creates his own
path in life. But since Noahs car isnt fully functioning yet, he has to get out and push his car
(represents the struggles of life and how difficult it is to not only get over a relationship, but also
how difficult it is to go about life on your own). The final shot will be of Noah pushing his car
down the road, and then it will fade to black.
I have also considered having those who have had a significant impact on his life there
pushing the car with him, or with him in the car being pushed by these people. This would be
placed in the movie to represent the effect these people have had on his life, no matter if it was
positive or negative. As well, the pushing of the car would represent how these people had
motivated, or even pushed him to continue on that path in life.

Frankish 40

INTERSECTING STORIES
My short film will consist of not just one story, but four. Of course, the film will follow
the main character, Noah, as he embarks on his journey, but it will also concern three other
people. All of these people are in cars as well since that is the premise of the world created for
this specific short film. One of the drivers is in a roundabout, one of the drivers is stuck in traffic,
and one of the drivers is actually Noahs love interest as her car stays idle on the side of the road.
Now before I go into more detail for each of these characters stories, I would like to point out
that this is a proposal, so if the characters dont work out the way I envision them, or it just
doesnt fit the theme of the film, they may be subject to having their part reduced or being cut
from the film entirely.
Roundabout Driver
This driver is in a constant loop in life. He continues to drive in the circle for no apparent
reason and continues to smile. His friendly waves to the passing drivers seem to give him an air
of cheerfulness. But when examined deeper, this driver is anything but happy. This driver is
actually a representation of depression, something that has had an impact on my life. If you have

Frankish 41

no idea what I am talking about, please refer to the personal influences section of this proposal.
His constant circling of the roundabout is a metaphor for how depression is reoccurring without
help, and that without the proper treatment, you can end up becoming stuck in that state. The
cheerful attitude and friendliness also play a key role here, as these personality traits have been
proven to be common among those who suffer from depression. At one point, Noah will roll his
window down to converse with the driver himself, asking if he was ok. The driver will respond
that everything is great and he shouldnt worry about him. Noah may even ask if the driver needs
help exiting the roundabout, but the driver will still refuse, saying he is happy where he is.
Traffic Driver
Now this driver is my favourite of the film. If you have ever seen the beginning of Office
Space, you will probably recognize the influence of this particular character. He is impatient,
angry, and very frustrated with what is happening at the moment. No matter what he does, the
people in front of him wont seem to move. It will later be revealed that the traffic jam itself is
only a few cars long, which allows Noah to pass them and continue on. Now this character is
actually a metaphor for having my progress being slowed or even stopped by someone or
something. In life, I have mostly tried my hardest, but sometimes that isnt enough to propel me
forward. Sometimes I must depend on others, and when those others dont assist me in the way I
need them to, it makes me feel as if my progress is being slowed due to their actions. An
example of this would be a group project. If I were to complete my part first, I would have to
wait for the other group members to finish their parts as well. And if they didnt do a very good
job, my mark would most likely be affected by their actions. So when the camera reveals the
source of the traffic jam, which is actually only two or three cars long, it turns out to be a shadow
on the road which the drivers refuse to pass through. This is also a representation of my feeling

Frankish 42

of being overshadowed. Noah will eventually pass the three or four cars to get by the shadow,
showing that he has (I have) gotten over previous accomplishments that have cast a shadow over
them (me). The character inside the car is a representation of my inner thoughts and feelings
toward the feeling of not moving in life. He is literally the representation of the title of the movie
as he idles in traffic. If you would like to understand what my thoughts and feelings are toward
the thought of being Idle in life, please refer to the personal influences section of this proposal.
Lily/Hitchhiker
Oh boy, here we go, hes putting a clich love story in his film, get ready for the cringe
fest of 2016 to begin. No, youre wrong, this will not be a cringe fest. This is actually a
metaphorical relationship within the movie itself with no actual representation of a love story
taking place. Noah, as he is driving, will come across a car idling on the side of the road. He will
stop to help the driver, which turns out to be a girl around his age. Nothing will appear to be
wrong with the car, but he offers her a ride anyways. She accepts and they set off on their
journey together. Now this meetup occurs before the other drivers, so the majority of the
dialogue when they come across the other drivers is from these two. When they come to a few
crossroads in the film, the girl will constantly comment on Noahs dependency on his dads map,
following the roads he has told him to take. The girl will tell him that she knows a short cut if he
would trust her, but Noah is a stubborn boy, so he refuses. This leads to the girl saying I think
you should drop me off here. I dont want to be a part of this journey anymore. As soon as she
says this, Noahs car will refuse to move and the girl will leave him. Now this girl he picks up is
a metaphor for relationships in general. Personally, relationships for myself have never been the
smoothest of rides, so to represent that in the film, there will be constant bumps and curves as
they drive together. As well, most relationships Ive had have ended very unexpectedly with no

Frankish 43

real closure, so to represent that in the film, the girl will leave very suddenly and Noah will just
sit there, completely taken aback by the abruptness of it all. The girls car is a metaphor for the
emotional damage that her last relationship caused her, due to the fact that her vehicle has no
physical signs of not working. And Noahs car breaking down after she leaves represents the
effects someone leaving/breaking up with me have stopped me from functioning correctly, at
least for a little while. Whats different about this relationship story from other relationship
stories in movies is that the bond between Noah and the girl is only represented by them being in
the same car and the effects it has on their journey itself. The conversations between the two will
be dry and platonic, making sure that both characters will show no romantic interest in each
other. This is a creative choice I have decided to make because it will better emphasize the
importance of these cars in the movie and not distract the viewers from the message I am trying
to convey. They arent just objects used for transportation, they are the physical representation of
different aspects of my life. As well, Lily and Noahs relationship doesnt just represent romantic
relationships in my life, but also personal friendships which have been severed as well.

PROGRESSION

Frankish 45

FILMING EQUIPMENT
To produce a successful short film, one does not need professional equipment. A short
film can even be created with simple tools such as your phone camera and iMovie. But for my
showcase short film to come as close to my vision as possible, the equipment I currently own and
will acquire in the coming months will hopefully assist me in telling the story as effectively as
possible, because as always, the story is king.
Nikon D5100 DSLR Camera
The Nikon D5100 Camera is what I have chosen to film this short film on. I also have a
variety of lenses to shoot with as well, including an 18-55mm lens, a 10-24mm lens, and a 55300mm lens. This camera is my number one asset for filming, as it will be filming most of the
scenes.
GoPro
Great for moving car shots, point of view shots, and underwater shots. I have not decided
if I will be using this camera for this short film as the quality is not what I would call ideal. Its

Frankish 46

versatility and durability would be very helpful, as would its size, but for the moment, its not
certain I will use this camera.
Tripod/Monopod
Very important piece of equipment for stable, non-moving shots, as opposed to the
shakiness of a handheld shot. This type of shot is not only visually appealing as it causes less
confusion for the audience, but it is also an important part of the storytelling process. It can help
show a characters intentions, state of mind, or even express an emotion.
DJI Phantom 4 Drone
One of the coolest pieces of equipment I have come across in my life. My friend Peter
just got back from China a few months back with a few nice pieces of equipment, such as the
Canon 6D camera, but this is by far my favourite. The DJI Phantom 4 drone is capable of
obtaining aerial shots of up to 60fps with 4K quality. It can also track the operator of the drone
itself, meaning it can take aerial tracking shots of moving objects, such as a car or someone on a
bike. Lucky enough, my friend Peter has agreed to assist me on this short film and operate the
drone.
Yelangu s60t Stabilizer
The newest addition to the collection of filming equipment, the Yelangu s60t is an
inexpensive alternative for stabilizers. This piece of equipment is capable of stabilizing camera
shots when trying to get a handheld or moving shot. It is ideal for DSLR cameras, which is
perfect for me as I am using one.
RODE Microphone

Frankish 47

The RODE microphone is important as it will be capturing all of the sounds for every
scene. Im predicting that the sound quality wont be the best on some shots, meaning we will
have to do multiple takes. As well, sound effects will become a priority to get the crisp sound
needed, so I will either be recording the sound separately then overlaying them onto the footage
during post, or I will be using resources obtained from other integrated students (Ryerson Sound
Effect Library, Jamie Belsky).

RESOURCES
Utilizing the resources you have access to can escalate the final product of the film from
something small and bare into something grand and interesting. Therefore, I have tried my
hardest to acquire what I need to create a film I can be proud of that will be entertaining and
inspiring to those who view it.
Celtx A free website which organizes your film from the very beginning and helps you go
through the process until shooting the film itself. Helpful for me to write my script and gain a
clear understanding of my vision for the film itself.
Adobe Important program which houses the two programs I will be using the most: Premiere
Pro and Adobe After Effects. Allows me to edit, assemble and enhance my footage, which will
eventually become the final product of my film.
Friends Equipment This is a broader field, which can include things such as clothing,
cameras, and cars. These are essential for the final vision of my film. The most important part of
these resources is that they are all free, meaning I have satisfactory props/equipment to create
something without having to spend a whole bunch of money.

Frankish 48

Royalty Free Music and Peoples Music Abilities Googling royalty free music is probably the
resource that is the easiest to obtain. I may not find exactly what I am looking for, but the music
will help guide me into the direction of music I would like to utilize for my film. As well, I do
have many people with strong music abilities involved in this project, which means if I would
like to take the time and effort, I could probably produce a decent custom soundtrack for the
film. This means I would have customized the sound for the film that is exactly (or as close as
possible) to my vision, and I wont have to pay an enormous amount of money for it.
Fathers Co-Workers My father was nice enough to ask around his work for people who could
produce graphics/advanced images for the film. He has also stated that these people will work for
free if they receive a credit in the film.

Frankish 49

CREW
For any short film to be successful (or any film production for that matter), a director
must first assemble an efficient and reliable crew. The crew can range from the director himself
and a few friends to hundreds of people. But the size of the crew doesnt matter, because no
matter how large or how skilled the crew is, theyre all working towards the same goal:
producing a great film. So for my short film IDLE, I have assembled a group of people which I
believe will assist me in creating something to be proud of.

The budget for my film is split into three different sections: Things I Already Own,

my showcase piece itself. These items are essential to filming, so purchasing these items will
become a top priority before filming. For this project, I am willing to spend a maximum of $150.

These lists are not final as more resources for the film may be necessary, or new equipment
may be used/not used while producing this short film

STEP BY STEP
I see my progression in this short film to be like most short films, although due to
separate school work, I will have to balance my work appropriately. Having to manage time will
probably be my biggest challenge, as I wont only be managing my time, but also the time of
those who are helping me with this project. Conflicting schedules and school work will become
my biggest enemy in the coming weeks, so I will have to set aside extra time in case I need to
reshoot or reschedule a scene.

Frankish 55

Since I already have the story down, the hardest part is complete of this short film so far.
My next step is to write a script based on this story, including all the dialogue of the characters
and the actions they perform. This will be edited heavily so as to extract the best possible product
from the script itself. Then, I will need to create storyboards for a visual guide of how the film
will look. Camera movements and positioning of the characters will be decided at this point, but
nothing will be final. Characters will mostly be decided at this point, but nothing will be set in
stone until the 22nd of October.
On the 22nd of October, I will be conducting a meeting for everyone that will be assisting
me in completing this short film. This includes the entire filming crew and the talent as well.
During this meeting, we will be discussing the script, the story, the motivations behind the
characters, the theme of my showcase, the meaning behind each aspect of the story, the
storyboards and the dates we will be filming. The objective of this meeting is to provide clarity
on the short film itself and to assign roles which will fit everyone to the best of their abilities.
After the meeting and the dates of filming are assigned, we will begin filming. I hope to
stay on target for the filming dates, but if we do go over our proposed timeline, I will hopefully
have set aside enough extra time to finish. With the filming finished, the editing grind will begin.
Adequate time will be set aside to edit as it is a long process. If the process takes longer than
expected, I do have several crew members that have said they would be willing to assist me in
editing. Splitting up the work would probably be the best solution to the time constraint issue at
this point. I will be using a program to share the film with several other crew members as well.
What this program allows you to do is share a rough cut of the film and have others comment on
exact points in the film for what to add, edit or take out.

Frankish 56

An advantage of having several crew members taking part in this short film is that many
of them have several other talents. So for the soundtrack of my film, I hope to have those which
are musically gifted to record music with its sole purpose for being used in this film. If this is not
possible we run out of time, I will also send a few emails to recordings artists for their
permission to use their music in my film. Music selections will be made before filming or before
editing and the emails will be sent as soon as possible to guarantee a reply as soon as possible.
With the film edited, or in the process of being edited, I will set aside certain clips/pieces
of footage for a trailer. I will edit this trailer as a way to create hype for the film itself and to give
people an idea of what my film is about. As well, I will be receiving assistance from several
people who are talented in cyber arts, so I also hope to create a few posters which I can stick
around the school or city advertising not only my film but the entire integrated showcase event as
well.
The footage and film will be stored in several different locations. It will be on my
personal computer at home, my laptop, my hard drive, my google drive, my dropbox account and
as a private YouTube video. Having multiple copies will ensure the film will be available to
present at showcase. The film will also be burned to a DVD and be placed in a case with a
custom cover that will mimic the style of professional movie DVD covers.

PROBLEMS

I am absolutely guaranteeing something will go wrong during the process of creating my

short film. Its just inevitable. So to prepare myself for these issues, I have taken the most likely
scenarios and provided solutions for them. I have decided to split this up into three sections;
Production, Post Production and Miscellaneous.
PRODUCTION
Main Actors Never Available This would be one of the main issues, as school and other
commitments make it difficult to commit to this project. So to prepare for this issue, I have
assembled a crew of more people than I need. I will film the essential scenes first, and if they

Frankish 59

arent available for tracking scenes or ones which they have minor involvement, I can just use
other people or reschedule.
Filming Equipment Malfunction If my main equipment on set malfunctions and doesnt
work, I have a backup camera ready at all times. If that doesnt work, I have friends cameras
ready as well. If a lens breaks, I have replacements. If my SD card corrupts, breaks or gets lost, I
have extras just in case. If my audio doesnt work, I can just record it in a controlled environment
or if worse comes to worse, I can schedule reshoot days.
Weather or conditions not the same as shooting the day before This is very important as the
scenes will not be filmed in order, which means that the weather will be constantly changing.
The inconsistency of the weather will become an issue, so to make sure it looks seamless in the
final product, I will be filming either entirely in winter, or cram it in before it begins snowing.
Days which the weather is bad or not ideal, scenes which dont require the environment will be
shot instead. As well, another issue is consistency. If a car isnt available or something which will
mess with the scene itself, a reshoot will be necessary. To prevent this from happening,
availability of cars and costumes will become part of the schedule. Those which are available the
most will be used as they will guarantee that the shots are consistent.
POST PRODUCTION
Computer Breaks Replace it or transfer the files to friends/school computer to work on
temporarily until my computer is fixed.
Files Become Corrupt Always have a backup of the files, so will just import it off of google
drive, dropbox or my hardrive.

Frankish 60

Audio Quality is Bad Reshoot, record it in a controlled environment or add effects using
premier pro to boost the quality. If worse comes to worse, just endure Taylors wrath and have
shit sound quality.
MISCELLANIOUS
Film is too long Strip it down to the bare essentials while making sure the story is easy to
understand while the message/theme is not disturbed. Always shoot more than I need so being
too short will not be an issue.
Film DVD will not display at showcase Use an alternative source, such as dropbox, google
drive, hardrive or the copy on my laptop. Will be in contact with those running tech during
showcase and test it before presenting.
Any other trouble on set Improvise. It may not be the best option, but a lot of films greatest
moments are born from improvisation. If an issue comes up, Ill just have to figure it out when it
comes up.

IDLE
WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY BRYDEN FRANKISH

SCENE 1: THE CAR

FADE IN FROM BLACK
INT. VEHICLE DAY - WINTER
Noah sits in his vehicle, gripping his steering wheel while he
stares off into the distance (straight forward behind camera). As
he stares, the radio is providing information on the weather and
date.
Noah looks down and to his right where his gaze becomes
transfixed on a single black glove sitting on his passenger seat.
He stares for a few seconds, as if the glove holds all the
answers to lifes questions. Then Noah looks back at the road, an
empty, snow covered road in the middle of nowhere. A corner of a
city sign is visible just to the side, but is unreadable from
this point.

Frankish 72

Noah looks for a few more seconds before grabbing his key and
starting the car. As the engine roars to life, we cut to black
and the title appears.
The car sits there idling with a black screen and the title
IDLE in the center.

SCENE 2: RUSHING FOR SCHOOL
FADE IN FROM TITLE:
INT. HOME WINTER EARLY MORNING
Begins with snoring male (Noah). An alarm on his phone goes off.
Noah rolls over and tries to turn it off, but accidently knocks
it off his nightstand, cracking his phones screen and making him
sit upright.
NOAH
Oh shit!

Noah gets up and goes to retrieve his phone. He picks it up and

realizes its cracked.

NOAH
Dammit.
Noah turns on his phone, only to reveal the time. He notices hes
late for school and begins to panic. He rushes to get his things
together, get dressed, brush his teeth and run down the stairs.
(Typical rushing montage) Noah tries to make a sandwich for
lunch, fails miserably. Rushing to get winter gear on, gets
everything on except hat and mittens. Grabs hat and mittens from
banister, not putting them on. Gets to his car, tosses things
into passenger seat. Goes to driver side, gets in and proceeds to
grab his hat. Then he goes for his gloves but notices there is
only one. Cut between Noah looking at glove and time.
He decides to drive with just one glove on. Turns the radio on
and it immediately goes to the host.

SCRIPT
Synopsys
A coming of age story set in a post-apocalyptic alternate reality, Noah, a teenager on the brink of
adulthood, struggles to create his own path in life.
Plot Summary
In an alternate reality, Earths population has been decimated by climate change. Those who
remain continue to exist through the use of cars, homes, and roadways. The human race is

Frankish 85

limited to a simple cycle of being born, growing up with one goal in mind: to set out on their
own journey and eventually find their own home.
Noah, a boy raised solely by his controlling father after his mothers death, begins his
journey in his late teens. With just a few pieces of luggage, a mysterious hula dashboard girl, his
car and his dads old map, Noah must set out on his own path to find his own home. Even with
his father directly guiding him through the use of a red line on the map, Noah must struggle to
create his own path on his journey, but not on his own. Through the help of a few people along
his journey, Noah begins to realize the importance of what it means to truly be unique.

Below is the 1st draft of the script for my short film called IDLE. I should warn you
right now that the script is not even close to complete, as it still includes spelling mistakes, plot
holes and very cringe worthy dialogue. Be warned that this script is subject to change at any time
before the final date of filming.

Well, here it shows my father went right and he turned out ok. So

We should ask if he needs help.

Ok.
Noah rolls his window down.

HEY, DO YOU NEED HELP
The roundabout driver notices Noah and Lily, smiles cheerfully
and waves.
ROUNDABOUT DRIVER
No thanks, I'm perfectly happy with where I am right now.
NOAH
Well ok then.
Noah signals to leave the roundabout and checks his blind spot.

LILY
Wait, what are you doing?
NOAH
What do you mean? She said she's fine, so she's fine.
LILY
He clearly isn't fine, she looks like she needs help or
something. Just look at him.
Noah looks towards the girl in the car. She smiles and waves
again at Noah and Lily. Noah half smiles and half-heartedly waves
back.

Frankish 94

NOAH
You are completely mental, she looks fine to me.
LILY
Look closer. She's probably been driving around in a circle for
hours, maybe even days! She probably needs some help getting out!
We need to help her.
Noah looks one last time at the girl driving around in a circle.
She smiles one last time before continuing forward. Noah signals
and gets out of the roundabout.
LILY
Hey, she needed our help, what are your doing? Go back!
Lily tries to grab the wheel, meanwhile, the car ride has
transitioned from smooth to bumpy and curvy. Noah fight's off
Lily, she pouts at Noah and looks out the window with tears in
her eyes.
NOAH
I'm sorry, but you know we have to follow the path. That driver
isn't part of the path.
Lily whispers to herself while looking out the window.
LILY
I hate your path. I never needed one to get where I was going.

Noah and Lily come up closer to the stopped cars.

NOAH
Woah woah woah, what the hell is this? There isn't supposed to be

Noah comes to a stop behind the stopped vehicles. He and Lily
share a look, and Lily breaks the gaze with a scowl and continues
to look out the window.
Noah looks towards the cars, and proceeds to honk the horn.
NOAH
Come on. Let's go.
The honking of the horn begins a flurry of honking from the cars
stopped. It also begins the screaming of a couple drivers as they
roll down their windows. The driver directly in front of Noah and
Lily is screaming at the driver 2 cars ahead.
HAVE THE DRIVERS POP OUT OF THEIR CARS. HAVE THE THIRD CAR
HIDDEN SO THE MAN APPEARS AS IF OUT OF NOWHERE. SHOT FROM NOAH'S
CAR, LEVEL CAMERA.
Noah sighs deeply and Lily looks in disbelief at the drivers.
LILY
How about you just go around them?
NOAH
You aren't allowed. It's the law.
Noah and Lily continue waiting behind the drivers as they
continue honking and yelling at each other. Time begins to pass.
LILY
Do you want to just sit here idling in traffic forever?

Frankish 96

NOAH LOOKS TOWARDS HULA GIRL, CUT TO HULA THEN CUT BACK TO NOAH.
NOAH

Noah signals to go around the cars.
NOAH
Do you see what you're making me do? I'm officially...
Noah looks around the cars and begins to drive into the left
lane.
NOAH
Im breaking the law. Are you happy now? I'm breaking the law and
now I'm a criminal. What have you made me do? I'm probably going
to turn a life of crime now. I'll have to get a tattoo of a
teardrop and I'll have to start listening to rap and....
LILY
Oh will you shut up. Look.
Lily gestures towards the middle car in between the two screaming
and honking drivers.
Seated in the car between the screaming drivers was a man who was
sitting, staring straight ahead. At first, he seems very calm and
unmoved by the traffic.
NOAH
Hey, do you know what's...
As soon as Noah tries to talk to the man, the traffic driver
immediately begins screaming and thrashing about his car.
ANGRY TRAFFIC DRIVER
WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS BULLSHIT? ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS? I'VE

Frankish 97

NOAH
I guess he isn't in the mood to talk.
Lily hits Noah.
NOAH
Ow, what the hell?
LILY
You're such an insensitive asshole. Look, if anyone needs help,
it's this guy. Talk to him.
NOAH
Fine.
Noah looks back to the angry man, who is still swearing at this
point.
NOAH
Um, hello. Hi, yo hi, hey...yeah hey there.
The angry man finally notices Noah. He looks towards Noah and
Lily with a look of disgust.

ANGRY TRAFFIC DRIVER

What? What do you want?
Noah and Lily are taken aback by this outburst.
HAVE A SHOT HERE OF THE HULA GIRL AS SHE SHAKES DUE TO THE
SUDDEN OUTBURST.

Um hi. We were wondering why you're stopped here.
The angry traffic driver looks confused and angry. He motions
towards the car ahead of him and behind him.

Frankish 98

ANGRY TRAFFIC DRIVER

Are you being serious? I'm stuck between these two idiots.
LILY
Well why don't you just go around?
ANGRY TRAFFIC DRIVER
Go around?
CAMERA REVEALS THAT THEY ARE THE ONLY THREE CARS ON THE ROAD,
ALL STOPPED BEHIND A SHADOW WHICH IS LAYING ACROSS THE ROAD.
NOAH
You know it's just you guys right?
ANGRY TRAFFIC DRIVER
Ye-yeah, I knew that.
LILY
So why don't you just go around him? It's not like you need to
wait for him to go.
The angry driver stuck in traffic gives a confused look to Lily,
as if it is the most outrageous thing he has ever heard.
ANGRY TRAFFIC DRIVER
Well that's illegal, I could get in trouble for doing that.
NOAH
See? Yes, thank you. Finally, someone who has respect for the
rules.
Lily decides she's fed up with Noah's shit and hits him hard on
the arm.
NOAH
Ow!

Frankish 99

LILY
Sometimes you need to break free from the solid lines of the road
and kind of figure things out for yourself, ya know? You can't
spend all of your time driving between the two solid lines!
ANGRY TRAFFIC DRIVER
Well I ... I just can't. No, it isn't right. Come on let's go!!!
Let's fucking go!
The driver begins to honk his horn after rolling his window down
to signify the end of the conversation between himself and Lily.
LILY
Why are they stopped anyways?
NOAH
I don't know...
Noah drives forward and stops the car beside the front car, just
in front of a shadow.

LILY
I don't see anything...Wait, why are you stopped? Come on, let's
keep going.
Lily looks toward Noah and notices he is just staring at the
road.
LILY
WHat are you...
Lily looks towards the other car stopped at the shadow as she
speaks. She notices the guy inside is frantically looking at his
map and the road.

LILY
It's ok, we can just take it to the next road and figure out

NOAH
No, we need to go back.
Lily gives a look of disbelief at Noah.
LILY
Noah, when are you going to learn you can't just depend on that

and make your own goddamn decisions! You need to realize that not
everything in life will have a fucking map to show you where to

Time passes of them driving, until the car slows down. They had
just got off of the dirt road. The reason they slowed down was
because Noah and Lily had come to a crossroads.
Noah and Lily look both left and right at the crossroads. Then
they look at each other. Noah then looks down at the map.
SHOT OF THE MAP, THEN PULL FOCUS BACK TO NOAH AS HE STARES AT
THE MAP.
Lily looks directly at Noah. As Noah looks at Lily, then looks
back the map, he begins reaching down towards it.
BEFORE SHE RIPS THE MAP UP, ALL SOUND WILL BE MUTED/MUFFLED SO
AS TO CREATE THE EFFECT OF BEING NUMB.
Lily makes a quick decision and grabs the map before Noah can.
She hesitates for a second, then rips the map, rips it again,
rips it a third time.
Noah sits in disbelief again. Lily looks at Noah, opens the door
and gets out. She grabs a couple bags from the back, making sure
to leave a few behind.
During this part, the camera will focus primarily on Noah,
keeping Lily out of focus and pushed out of frame.

IMMEDIATE CONTINUATION
THE CROSSROADS
INT./EXT. OF CAR - MIDDAY
As soon as Lily slams the door a second time after grabbing her
bags, the sound will come back.
Noah will snap back to attention and begin grabbing the pieces of
the map, trying to put them back together. He tries several times
before looking up in the mirror. He sees Lily walking back the
way they came.
He stares for a second, then reaches into the glovebox. He pushes
aside a few objects until he grabs what he's looking for: a black
marker and a map.
He draws a crossroads resembling the one he is at. He then looks
up, stares at the trees, then looks down and draws a line
straight forward. He then looks up again and the trees have
disappeared to give way to another road.
Noah tries to drive, but the engine only revs, not allowing him
to continue forward. Noah looks at gas dial and the gear shift,
nothing appears to be wrong.
Noah then rolls his sleeves up. He gets out of his car and begins
to push it down the road. As he continues, more and more people
from his past begin to help him push the car. They push the car
off into the horizon.
