Judge: probable cause

suspect murdered lesbian chef

A Fairfax County judge on Monday ruled that

prosecutors established probable cause that a
19-year-old Virginia man committed second-degree
murder when he allegedly stabbed to death lesbian
chef and caterer Tyonne Johns on Aug. 6 at a
Chantilly, Va., park.
The ruling by Judge Michael Lindner came during
TYONNE JOHNS was

as Best Chef in the Best
Court in which two police ocers and a witness

testied that Kempton Alexander Bonds allegedly
stabbed Johns, 35, during an argument at Ellanor C.
Lawrence Park.
Police have said the argument was over the ownership of folding chairs used
for an Aug. 6 wedding at the park that Johns catered. Bonds, a summer employee
at the park, claimed the chairs belonged to the park department. Witnesses said
Johns claimed they were owned by a company with which she was associated
and she was responsible to returning them to that company.
Bondss attorney has argued that Bonds acted in self-defense after Johns and
several wedding guests verbally and physically threatened Bonds during the
argument over the chairs. Prosecutors with the Fairfax County Commonwealths
Attorneys oce have said eyewitnesses told police neither Johns nor any
wedding guest laid a hand on Bonds and that the stabbing was unjustied.
Guests at the wedding told the news media that Bonds had been acting
erratically and in a hostile way toward wedding guests prior to the altercation.
They said at one point he allegedly cut o power during the wedding reception,
causing the music to come to a stop.
At Mondays hearing, Judge Lindner agreed to allow Bonds to remain free on
bond after certifying the case for deliberation by a grand jury on Sept. 14 and until
the time of his trial if the grand jury hands down an indictment, as expected.
Friends and family members said Johns, a native of Hopewell, Va., was a highly
acclaimed chef and operated her own catering business in the D.C. area during
the past several years. Readers of the Washington Blade last month voted to
posthumously award Johns the honor of Best Chef in the Blades 2016 Best of
Gay D.C. competition.
Brandon Thompson, Johnss cousin said he was among between 20 and 25
family members and friends of Johns who attended the Oct. 31 court hearing.
The defense attorney was trying to make it seem like he was justied in doing
it, Thompson told the Blade. And the judge obviously didnt see it that way.
Defense attorney Peter Greenspun couldnt immediately be reached for comment.
Chief Deputy Commonwealths Attorney Casey Lingan said Lindner scheduled
a follow-up hearing for Nov. 17 in Fairfax County Circuit Court, where the case is
now pending, to discuss the action by the grand jury.

Steve Cheverton dies at 56

Steven John Cheverton, a longtime resident of Northern
Virginia who operated a dry cleaning business in the 1980s
and became involved in website development in more
recent years, died Oct. 25 at the age of 56.

intellectual and physical challenges, including building
a deck outside the couples house in Linden, Va., which
overlooks the Shenandoah Valley.
Cheverton was born in Norristown, Pa. He moved with his family to Vestal, N.Y.,
when he was one year old and remained there until he was 8, when the family moved
to Reston, Va. He graduated from Herndon High School in 1978 and studied business
management at Salem University in Salem, W.Va.
According to Rockstroh, Cheverton was managing a dry cleaning business in Northern
Virginia in the late 1980s before he bought the business around the time he married
the original owners daughter, Lisa Kaye Norford, in 1989. The couple had two children,
Leslie Anne and Tyler Brian.
Rockstroh said he and Cheverton met in 1996, after Cheverton and his wife divorced,
and the two men established a relationship in October 1997. The two were joined in a
civil union ceremony in Stowe, Vt., in March 2002, with Chevertons two children and the
couples friends in attendance.
When same-sex marriage became legal in Virginia in 2014, Rockstroh said he and
Cheverton made immediate plans to get married on Oct. 21, 2014, which was the 17th
anniversary of their becoming a couple. The wedding took place on the deck at their
house in Linden with Chevertons children Leslie and Tyler attending.
He loved rock music, travel, camping, home improvement and self-improvement,
Rockstroh said.
Chevertons interest in recreation and camping as well as computers and website
development was put to use in 2008 when he and Rockstroh started a website called
Gay2ZCamping.com. Among other things, the site sought to provide detailed information
about community campgrounds for the LGBT community.
Cheverton served as a website consultant for the Washington Blade in 2010.
Rockstroh is a longtime Blade employee in sales.
Rockstroh said a memorial service is tentatively planned for Nov. 19 in Front Royal,
Va. Further details, including a time and specic location, will be announced soon.

LGBT police liaison supervisor faces complaint

The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department is investigating an unspecied complaint
led against Sgt. Jessica Hawkins, supervisor of the departments LGBT Liaison Unit,
according to a knowledgeable source familiar with the department.
Interim Police Chief Peter Newsham conrmed that a complaint against Hawkins had
been led but said personnel rules prevent the department from disclosing any further
details at this time.
Were in the process right now of investigating the complaint and well see what
happens when we get to the bottom of it, he told the Washington Blade.
Its a personnel matter so we dont discuss that publicly because there are rules
regarding personnel, he said. But I can tell you it is not uncommon for members of
this agency to receive complaints. And some of them are sustained and some of them
are not.
Newsham said Hawkins remains in her current position as head of the LGBT Liaison
Unit under full duty status while the investigation is being conducted.
Well take a look at it and when we get to the bottom of it well be able to share
more, he said.

Supreme Court to hear

Gavin Grimm case
Trans student challenging
Va. school districts
bathroom policy
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
The U.S. Supreme Court late last week
said it would hear a transgender Virginia
students lawsuit against his school
districts bathroom policy.
Gavin Grimm, a student at Gloucester
County High School, alleges the
Gloucester County School Districts policy
that prohibits him from using the boys
restroom or locker room because they
are not consistent with his biological
gender is unconstitutional under the
14th Amendments Equal Protection
Clause. His lawsuit also contends the
regulation violates Title IX of the U.S.
Education Amendments of 1972 that
prohibits schools receiving federal funds
from discriminating on the basis of sex.
The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in
Richmond ruled in Grimms favor in April.
The Supreme Court in August issued
an injunction against the decision that
would have allowed Grimm to use the
boys restroom during his senior year.
The Gloucester County School Board
subsequently asked the justices to
reverse the 4th Circuits ruling.
We are grateful that the Supreme
Court has granted the school boards
petition in this dicult case, said the
Gloucester County School Board in a
statement. The board looks forward to
explaining to the court that its restroom
and locker room policy carefully balances
the interests of all students and parents
in the Gloucester County school system.
The American Civil Liberties Union
represents Grimm in his case.
Grimm told reporters during a
conference call that he is disappointed
he will have to spend my nal school year
being singled out and treated dierently
from every other guy. Josh Block, a
senior sta attorney with the ACLUs
LGBT Project, made a similar point.
Gavin is just trying to get through the
day using the restroom like anyone else,
he said.
Kris Hayashi, executive director of the
Transgender Law Center, is among the
advocates who expressed their support
for Grimm.
Schools cannot harass, discriminate
against, and single out students because
they are transgender, and we look
forward to Gavin, backed by the ACLU,

GAVIN GRIMM

PHOTO COURTESY OF ACLU OF VIRGINIA

having his day in court, said Hayashi.

The Supreme Court agreed to hear
the Grimm case against the backdrop of
the national debate over whether trans
people have the constitutional right to
use bathrooms that are consistent with
their gender identity.
North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory in April
signed House Bill 2, which prevents trans
people from using public bathrooms that
are consistent with their gender identity.
The controversial law that has sparked
outrage across the country also prohibits
local municipalities from enacting LGBTinclusive nondiscrimination measures.
The Justice Department in May led
a civil rights lawsuit against North
Carolina over HB 2. McCrory last month
quietly withdrew a lawsuit that his
administration brought against the
Obama administration.
North Carolina is among the states
under the 4th Circuits jurisdiction.
The ACLU and Lambda Legal led a
lawsuit against HB 2 on behalf of four
LGBT North Carolinians. The groups
said in a statement they are hopeful
the Supreme Court will arm the
sound decision from the 4th Circuit and
recognize the profound harms from rules
that ban transgender individuals from
using the restroom.
The Supreme Court is expected to hear
oral arguments in the case sometime in
early 2017.
The U.S. Senate has yet to hold a
hearing on whether to conrm Obamas
nominee to ll the vacancy left in the wake
of the death of Justice Antonin Scalia. The
4th Circuits ruling that allowed Grimm to
use the boys bathroom would remain in
place if the Supreme Court were to issue
a 4-4 ruling.

Us Helping Us leader tells of 25 years in AIDS work

Longtime advocate
Ron Simmons to
retire in December
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
Ron Simmons, executive director and
CEO of the D.C. AIDS service organization
Us Helping Us, People Into Living, was
honored for his 25 years of service
with the organization during its annual
fundraising gala on Oct. 29.
Simmons has been credited with playing
a key role in transforming Us Helping Us
from a volunteer support group for black
gay men with HIV in 1992 into a nationally
recognized health and wellness center
with 27 full-time employees and an annual
budget of $2.5 million.
In August, Simmons, who holds a
doctorate degree in communications
from Howard University, announced he
would retire at the end of December.
In an interview with the Washington
Blade, Simmons told of how his lifelong
quest for social justice, including culturally
sensitive HIV prevention eorts for LGBT
African Americans, had its roots in his
years as a student activist in the 1970s.
While attending the State University
of New York at Albany, Simmons said he
immersed himself in the early gay rights
and the anti-Vietnam War movements
while working on his bachelors degree
in Afro American Studies and separate
masters degrees in African History and
Educational Communications.
Well Stonewall was in 69 and I was
19 in 69, Simmons said. And I had just
really come out in college. And then we
had the student strike in 1970, which
really changed me profoundly, he said.
It opened my eyes as an activist. I was
involved with the student strike.
He was referring to the eruption of
student protests following President
Richard Nixons decision to escalate the
Vietnam War by ordering U.S. troops
to invade Cambodia. A short time later,
National Guard troops shot and killed
four students and wounded nine others
during an anti-war protest at Kent State
University in Ohio, triggering more
student protests and strikes, or the
boycotting of classes, at college campuses
across the country.
Simmons moved to D.C. in 1980 to begin
his doctorate studies at Howard. Five years
later, unbeknownst to Simmons, the Rev.
Rainy Cheeks and activist Prem Deben
founded Us Helping Us as a support group
for black gay men with HIV. Its founding
came at a time often described as the dark
days of the AIDS epidemic, when an HIV
diagnosis was viewed as a death sentence
because no eective medical treatment

retire at the end of the year.

WASHINGTON BLADE FILE PHOTO BY MICHAEL KEY

had been developed.

As a gay man with HIV, Simmons has
said he joined and began attending the
Us Helping Us support group in March
1991, a development he has called life
changing. At the time he was an assistant
professor at Howard and was being urged
by friends to begin treatment with AZT,
an early AIDS drug that had debilitating
side eects that activists have said often
hastened the death of AIDS patients.
At the time basically no one, no black
organization, was telling people with
HIV that they could live, said Simmons.
Everyone was saying youre going to die.
Us Helping Us was the only black agency
that said you can live with this disease.
Lacking an eective drug to treat
people with HIV, Cheeks and Deben
developed what they called a holistic
regimen of nutrition, stress management,
meditation, and exercise.
I thought it was incredible, said
Simmons, who joined the group as a
volunteer after completing a 12-week
introduction to the regimen.
It was a cultural based group, he said.
Every week that they came they learned
something else about how to preserve
their health by looking at the body, the
mind and the spirit, he said. And then
for the last part we talked about the issues
about the experience of self that we need
to look at in order to live with HIV.
He said he rejected the advice of
friends to begin treatment with AZT, a
decision that may have saved his life,
Simmons said. He notes that he is among
the people who became HIV positive in
the early years who lived to benet from
the availability of life-saving AIDS drugs

that emerged in the middle to late 1990s.

I remember friends of mine dying
every seven to 10 days, he said. Now
that were down to a pill a day I think
its incredible. And I am on these drugs.
I started taking medications in 2003. So I
swear by them.
Simmons tells of how Cheeks
persuaded him to become Us Helping
Uss rst executive director in 1992 after
Simmons lost his teaching job at Howard.
Simmons was honored Oct. 29, at
the Us Helping Us annual event called A
Passion for Living, A Celebratory Night of
Giving at the University of the District of
Columbias Student Center Ballroom.
Marvin Bowser, D.C. Mayor Muriel
Bowsers brother, read a proclamation
at the event issued by Mayor Bowser
declaring Oct. 29 Ron Simmons Day in the
District of Columbia.
Simmons gives a rst-hand account
of his lifes journey before and after his
tenure at Us Helping Us in his interview
with the Blade, which follows.
Blade: Lets start with where you are
from and where you were born and
raised. Youve said before that youre
from Brooklyn, N.Y.?
Simmons: Yes, Brownsville.
Blade: Did you go to high school in
Brooklyn?
Simmons: Yes, I went to Franklin
Delano Roosevelt High School FDR High
School.
Blade: Your resume shows you went to
the State University of New York at Albany
for your undergraduate degree?
Simmons: Yes, I graduated in 1972 and
I went back there in 77 for my masters.
Blade: What year did you graduate
from high school?
Simmons: I graduated from high school
in 1968. I went to college. I graduated in
1972. Then I worked for the Newark, New
Jersey Board of Education. I was the public
relations man for the superintendent of
schools.
Blade: So you went back to Albany for
your masters?
Simmons: Yes, MA in history and an
MS in educational communications
Blade: When did you move to
Washington?
Simmons: The summer of 1980 in
August.
Blade: Was it a short time later that you
went to Howard University for your Ph.D.?
Simmons: I came to D.C. to get my
Ph.D. from Howard. So basically I came
here in August and I was in class like

the last week of August. So I did that. I

was going for my doctorate and I was
a teaching assistant. I taught like two
classes a week. And then in 1986 they
hired me full time. I hadnt nished my
doctorate yet. I nished my doctorate in
87. And after I nished my doctorate they
hired me as an assistant professor and I
was in for another ve years.
Blade: You said you became an activist
during your student years in Albany?
Simmons: Yeah. In my senior year I
did my college yearbook. I was the editor
in chief of the yearbook. And it was quite
controversial. In fact someone told me it
was denounced on the oor of the New
York State Senate the day it came out.
Blade: Why was that?
Simmons: Because it was very
controversial. It had a gay section. It
had a section about the Vietnam War.
The section on the Vietnam War had a
surprise climax that a lot of people didnt
like.
Blade: Was the tone of it against the
war?
Simmons: Oh yeah. It was very much
against the war. There was this picture
taken of two Vietnamese soldiers holding
up two severed heads. I dont know if you
ever saw that And this guy, this solider
was holding up two severed heads.
And so when I talked about the whole
war section I put in this picture from
a book called Vietnam Incorporated.
So I had pictures of the soldiers with
themselves relaxing. Then I had pictures
of the horrors of the war. And it ended
with that shot of the guy holding the
severed head. And it said something like
if this makes you uncomfortable you can
imagine how they feel.
And then when you ip the page its the
same guy with the two heads but you see
it cropped. They were the same pictures
three times on the page. By the time you
get to the last one its cropped down to
just a square of the severed head. Then
when you ip it over the senior section
starts with all the senior pictures and the
severed head runs through the middle
row. A lot of people were upset by that.
But a lot of people loved it. Kurt
Vonnegut said that he thought it was
really cool.
Blade: Were you active in other student
activities?
Simmons: Yeah. Well frankly the
yearbook pretty much consumed my
senior year because it was a lot of work, a
lot of writing. But I was involved with the
gay group.

EXCLUSIVE: Q&A with Hillary Clinton

I want LGBT people to
know that I will always
have your back

the rights of many, including declaring

that gay rights are human rights, and
made advancing the rights of LGBT people
around the world a cornerstone of our
foreign policy, including advocating for
the rst ever United Nations resolution on
LGBT rights. Donald Trump, on the other
hand, has conducted business deals worth
millions of dollars in or with some of these
countries and has done it for the sole
purpose of padding his own pockets.
Heres the bottom line: As your
president, I will continue to ght for
LGBT rights here in the United States and
around the globe.

By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
In an exclusive interview with the
Washington Blade, Hillary Clinton pledged
to build a hopeful, inclusive America where
everyone counts as she continues to draw
a contrast between herself and Donald
Trump over their views on LGBT issues.
The Democratic presidential hopeful
answered 13 questions on issues
important to the LGBT community
in a written interview with the Blade
completed Wednesday with less than one
week remaining before Election Day.
We have so much more work to do,
and I want LGBT people in every corner
of this country to know that as president,
I will always have your back, Clinton said.
In the interview, Clinton recommitted
herself to pushing comprehensive LGBT
non-discrimination legislation known as
the Equality Act and to work to ensure
the prohibition on gender discrimination
under current law applies to LGBT people.
As president, Ill make ghting
discrimination
against
the
LGBT
community a top priority including
by working with Congress to pass the
Equality Act, Clinton said. And we wont
stop there. Well also take on harassment,
bullying, and violence and youth
homelessness, which disproportionately
hurts LGBT kids.
For the rst time, Clinton explicitly
vowed to veto the First Amendment
Defense Act, a federal religious freedom
bill that would enable anti-LGBT
discrimination.
In response to Trumps criticism over
the Clinton Foundation accepting millions
of dollars from countries with anti-LGBT
laws, Clinton laid out the charitys work
combatting the global HIV/AIDS epidemic
and pointed out Trump has had business
dealings with these same countries for the
sole purpose of padding his own pockets.
Clinton also identied as a personal
role model Edith Windsor, the plainti
in the lawsuit that led the U.S. Supreme
Court to strike down the Defense of
Marriage Act in 2013.
Edie is a truly remarkable woman:
smart, feisty, and very brave, Clinton
said. She came of age at a time when
many LGBT people felt they couldnt live
openly but she had the courage to stand
up for her marriage in such a bold, public
way and the faith to believe that justice
would ultimately prevail.
The Washington Blade agreed to
conduct the written interview with
Clinton and submitted similar questions

interview.

WASHINGTON BLADE FILE PHOTO BY MICHAEL KEY

to Trumps campaign. Although the

Trump campaign said it would answer
the questions, the Blade as of press time
had not received responses from the
Republican candidate.
Washington Blade: Where would
passage of the Equality Act t among
your legislative priorities as president?
Hillary Clinton: As you know, there are
still places in America where LGBT people
can get married on Sunday and red on
Monday, just because of who they are or
who they love. Thats wrong, and it goes
against everything we stand for as a country.
As President, Ill make ghting
discrimination
against
the
LGBT
community a top priority including
by working with Congress to pass the
Equality Act. And we wont stop there.
Well also take on harassment, bullying,
and violence and youth homelessness,
which disproportionately hurts LGBT kids.
Well end the harmful practice of so-called
conversion therapy for minors, because
LGBT kids dont need to be cured of
anything. And well bring people together to
reform our gun laws and keep guns from
falling into the wrong hands, so that what
happened at Pulse never happens again.
All of these things are part of my vision for a
hopeful, inclusive America where everyone
counts, and everyone has a place.
Blade: If the next Congress isnt
amenable to LGBT rights, in what
areas would you expand President
Obamas executive order barring antiLGBT workplace discrimination among
federal contractors?
Clinton: For starters, Im going to keep
working as hard as I can between now and
Election Day to elect champions of LGBT rights
up and down the ballot. I want us to have plenty
of people in Congress who are committed to

equality and dignity for all Americans.

But this is a really important question,
and a reminder that LGBT rights are
absolutely on the ballot in this election. Our
next president can either defend President
Obamas executive actions, or repeal them.
Donald Trump has promised to repeal
them. If Im fortunate enough to be elected
president, Ill protect them, and Ill build
on them. Well make sure were enforcing
the Presidents executive actions in a real
and meaningful way. And well support the
eorts that are already underway in the
courts and across the federal government
to clarify that protecting people from sex
discrimination means protecting them
from discrimination on the basis of gender
identity and sexual orientation, too.
Blade: The Clinton Foundation has
faced criticism for accepting millions of
dollars from countries with laws that
punish homosexual acts with death,
including between $10-25 million from
Saudi Arabia. The foundation has done
much good work, but do the ends
justify the means?
Clinton: I am so proud of the work the
Clinton Foundation has done on behalf
of vulnerable people all across the world
especially the work to combat HIV and
AIDS, an epidemic that disproportionately
impacts LGBT communities around the
globe. Due to the work of the Clinton
Foundation, 11.5 million people in the
developing world have access to HIV
medication at 90 percent lower cost.
Thats more than half of all adults and
of all children receiving treatment today.
Ive always believed that we shouldnt
shy away from confronting human rights
abuses around the world against LGBT
people or anyone else. Thats why, as
Secretary of State, I actively stood up to
these countries and have advocated for

Blade: In 2013, you forcefully came

out in favor of marriage equality, but
others, including President Obama and
Republican Sen. Rob Portman, preceded
you. Why didnt you echo President
Obama and endorse marriage equality
as secretary of state and do you regret
not coming out for it sooner?
Clinton: Like a lot of Americans, my
views on this have changed for the
better. And that happened because
people I cared about had the grace and
patience to help me understand two key
things. First, everyone in this country
must have the right to marry whoever
they love just like everyone else. This was
about being recognized as full and equal
citizens and protecting families from very
real discrimination. Ive always believed
marriage is a great blessing, so why deny
that joy to anyone? And second, marriage
equality makes us fairer, more respectful
and a better country. It is the armation
of our basic civil rights.
Blade: Based on donations to the
Clinton Foundation, Donald Trump
has famously said ask the gays who
has the better record between you
and him on LGBT rights. Who has the
better record and what is the biggest
risk to the LGBT community of a Trump
presidency?
Clinton: Ill gladly put my record on
LGBT rights next to Trumps for the voters
to decide any day!
Lets start with Donald Trump. Hell
appoint Supreme Court justices who
will overturn marriage equality, and said
hell repeal President Obamas executive
actions to protect LGBT people from
discrimination. And in case theres any
doubt about the kind of president he
would be, look who he chose for his
running mate: Governor Mike Pence,
who signed a law that allowed Indiana
businesses to legally discriminate against
LGBT customers. We also know that
Donald Trump has a long track record of
bullying, harassment, and discrimination

Clinton seeks a hopeful, inclusive America

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 10

in his businesses, including reportedly

against LGBT employees.
LGBT equality is an issue thats so close
to my heart. As First Lady, I fought to
expand funding for HIV and AIDS research
and became the rst First Lady to march
in a Pride parade. As Senator from New
York, I championed legislation to address
hate crimes, fought for federal nondiscrimination legislation to protect LGBT
Americans in the workplace, and pushed for
an end to discriminatory and harmful laws
that blocked LGBT Americans from adopting
children. As Secretary of State, I led the
eort to pass the rst-ever U.N. Resolution
on LGBT Human Rights, launched the Global
Equality Fund, ended State Department
regulations that denied same-sex couples
and their families equal rights, helped
implement LGBT-friendly workplace policies,
and updated the State Departments policy
so that transgender individuals passports
reect their true gender.
We have so much more work to do, and
I want LGBT people in every corner of this
country to know that as president, I will
always have your back.
But rst, we have to win this election!
Blade: Trump has pledged to sign
the First Amendment Defense Act,
religious freedom legislation that
would enable anti-LGBT discrimination,
if Congress approves it. Would you
veto such legislation if passed while
youre president and what is your plan
to ght the growing movement of
religious freedom bills across the U.S.?
Clinton: I would absolutely veto that
legislation, which is part of a concerted
eort to discriminate against LGBT
people under the guise of protecting
religious freedom. I rmly believe that we
can promote equal rights and dignity for
all Americans and protect religious liberty
at the same time. Thats not what the socalled First Amendment Defense Act
does. Its insincere and insidious, and we
cant let it become law.
As president, I will protect religious
liberty and ght to make sure all
Americans can live their lives free from
discrimination. We can do both. The
Equality Act, for example, advances LGBT
equality while maintaining the religious
exemptions that have been part of our
civil rights laws for decades.
Blade: You have set out a vision to
achieve an AIDS-free generation. How
will your policies help get the country
to an AIDS-free generation, and one
with treatment for all who have HIV?
Clinton: As Secretary of State, I said
that an AIDS-free generation was within
our reach, and I will keep ghting for that

future as president.
Since our ght rst began, infection
rates have fallen in many places, more
people with HIV are getting life-saving
treatment, and more babies born to
HIV-positive mothers are getting the
treatment they need to avoid infection.
But HIV and AIDS are still with us. More
than 1.2 million people live with HIV in the
United States, and globally, HIV aicts a
total of 37 million people. So weve made
a lot of progress toward this goal but
we still have our work cut out for us.
I believe that now is the time to
rededicate ourselves to achieving the
AIDS-free generation that is within our
grasp. Thats why as president I will
convene an End the Epidemic working
group to end AIDS as an epidemic in
the United States and globally. Here at
home, well expand the availability of HIV
prevention medications like PrEP, take
on disparities and barriers to accessing
care, cap out-of-pocket drug costs,
and launch a campaign to end stigma
and discrimination. Around the world,
well dramatically increase the number
of people on HIV treatment through
programs like PEPFAR, increase our
investment in HIV and AIDS research, and
engage in public education campaigns
in key countries where stigma and
discrimination are rampant.
Blade: You have been a devout
Methodist throughout your life and
cited that as inspiration for seeking to
help others, but the Methodist Church
wont ociate or recognize same-sex
marriages. Should the church embrace
same-sex marriage and do you expect
that will happen?
Clinton: Im deeply grateful for my
faith, and the church that has nurtured
it since I was a young girl. As Ive said, I
believe we can protect religious liberty
while ensuring that all Americans are
treated equally under the law. On a
personal level, I am going to keep ghting
for equality and encouraging others to
embrace the LGBT community because I
think its the right thing to do.
Blade: You made international LGBT
rights a priority as secretary of state.
How would you advocate for them as
president?
Clinton: LGBT rights are human rights
plain and simple. No matter what we look
like, where we come from, or who we are,
we are all equally entitled to our human
rights and dignity. But hundreds of millions
of people live in places where anti-LGBT
violence is rampant and where they can
be arrested, imprisoned, even executed for
their sexual orientation or gender identity.
As president, Ill continue to stand
up for LGBT rights around the world,

as I did as Secretary of State. Well start

by stepping up our support for the
Global Equality Fund with a $50 million
investment over the next decade. This
will expand programs that advance LGBT
human rights around the world and send
a strong message that the United States
is an ally to LGBT people everywhere.
Well also continue to work on public
health issues like HIV and AIDS, and
take on discriminatory, outdated laws
that stigmatize and even criminalize
being LGBT. And well partner with
governments, multilateral institutions,
NGOs, and activists on the ground so that
the LGBT community around the world
gets the resources and support they need
to not just survive but thrive.
Blade: When you were Secretary of State,
what are the top items you accomplished
on behalf of LGBT people and do you have
favorite memories of working with LGBT
people in other countries?
Clinton: Im proud of what we were able
to accomplish at the State Department in
making the advancement of LGBT equality
worldwide part of our foreign policy.
We announced for the rst time ever
that we would take into consideration
how a country treats LGBT people when
we delivered foreign aid. We instructed
American diplomats to raise concerns
about specic cases and laws. We worked
with partners to strengthen humanrights protections. I helped lead the eort
to pass the rst-ever U.N. resolution on
LGBT human rights. And we launched the
Global Equality Fund to support the work
of civil society organizations working on
these issues around the world.
Some of my proudest accomplishments
were actually here at home, because
we know that the U.S. is strongest when
we lead by example. We ended State
Department policies denying samesex couples and families equal rights,
implemented LGBT-friendly workplace
policies, and updated the Departments
policy for transgender persons passports
to reect their true gender.
Blade: The rates of violence and
murder for transgender women of
color remain stubbornly high. What
would you do to address this problem?
Clinton: This is a serious and urgent
problem. In 2015, 21 transgender people
most of them women of color were
murdered. And that doesnt even begin
to account for the violence that goes
unreported or ignored.
We need to stand up for the lives and safety
of transgender people, and take on bigotry
and discrimination wherever they occur.
That means ghting for strong antidiscrimination laws. It means doing
a better job of collecting data on

gender identity and sexual orientation,

because we cant solve the problem of
discrimination until we understand its
full scope. It also means investing in law
enforcement training to ensure fair and
impartial policing in interactions with the
LGBT community.
America saw the eects of hate in
Orlando, with the attack on the Pulse
nightclub the deadliest mass shooting
by a single person in our history. So we also
need to nally pass common-sense reforms
to address the gun violence epidemic.
Most of all, its far past time we say with
one voice that transgender people are
valued, they are loved, they are us, and
they deserve to be treated that way.
Blade: You hired a gay man, Robby
Mook, to run your campaign. How did
you meet him and why did you choose
him for the job?
Clinton: Easy: He was the best person
for the job, hands down. Robby is brilliant,
hes one of the most incredible organizers
Ive ever met, and he creates a real culture
of hard work and inclusion. Thats why just
about everybody who works for him winds
up working for him again (sometimes
again and again and again!).
Blade: In separate interviews with
the Washington Blade in 2008, Barack
Obama cited as a gay role model his
college professor Lawrence Goldyn
and John McCain cited 9/11 hero Mark
Bingham. Whom would you identify as
an LGBT role model?
Clinton: Im inspired by Edie Windsor,
the lead plainti in the Supreme Court
case that paved the way for marriage
equality. When Edies wife, Thea Spyer,
passed away, Edie realized she owed
hundreds of thousands of dollars in
federal estate taxes she wouldnt have
had to pay if she had been married to
a man. She had to choose whether to
live with this injustice, or ght back. She
chose to ght back and as a result, the
Court ruled that all legally married LGBT
couples must be treated equally under
federal law. Edies case opened the door
for the Supreme Court ruling one year
later, which held that marriage equality
was the law of the land in all 50 states.
Edie is a truly remarkable woman: smart,
feisty, and very brave. She came of age at
a time when many LGBT people felt they
couldnt live openly but she had the
courage to stand up for her marriage in
such a bold, public way and the faith to
believe that justice would ultimately prevail.
And even though her own case has been
fought and won, shes still ghting just as
ercely for the rights of all LGBT Americans.

publisher Tracy Baim contributed to
this report.

LGBT allies favored to win D.C. races

Former Mayor Gray eyes
return to City Council
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
Former D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray is at the
top of a list of 10 LGBT-supportive candidates
expected to win their races for seats on the
City Council and the D.C. State Board of
Education in the Nov. 8 city election.
With
Democratic
presidential
candidate Hillary Clinton considered the
overwhelming favorite to beat Republican
Donald Trump, Libertarian Gary Johnson,
and Green Party candidate Jill Stein in
the citys presidential race, most of D.C.s
political establishment has focused on
the D.C. Council and school board races.
Many LGBT activists consider Gray, who
is running for the Ward 7 Council seat he
held before becoming mayor, the most
LGBT-supportive politician ever elected
to public oce in the city.
Other LGBT-supportive candidates
considered strong favorites to win
election or re-election next Tuesday
include Council members David Grosso
(I-At-Large), Robert White (D-At-Large),
Jack Evans (D-Ward 2), Brandon Todd
(D-Ward 4), and Trayon White (D-Ward 8).
If anything, the D.C. Council will be
even more reliably pro-LGBT starting in
January, with Vince Gray returning and
Robert White already there, said Rick

Rosendall, president of the non-partisan

Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance.
Robert White defeated incumbent
Council member Vincent Orange (D-AtLarge) in the citys Democratic primary
in June. He was appointed by the citys
Democratic State Committee as interim
Council member for the seat in September
after Orange resigned to take a job as
head of the D.C. Chamber of Commerce.
The interim position ends on Jan. 1,
2017 when the winner of one of two atlarge seats on the ballot on Nov. 8 takes

oce. Most political pundits predict

Robert White will be one of the winners.
But he and Grosso are being
challenged for the two seats by Statehood
Green Party candidate G. Lee Aikin,
Republican Carolina Celnik, Libertarian
Party candidate Matthew Klokel, and
independent John C. Cheeks.
Under the citys election law, voters are
allowed to cast two votes in the at-large
race with the highest two vote-getters
declared the winners.
Aikin and Celnik have expressed support
for LGBT rights, with Aikin the most outspoken
on those issues besides Grosso and Robert
White. Celnik received the endorsement of
the D.C. Log Cabin Republicans.
Klokel and Cheeks received a 0
rating from the Gay and Lesbian Activists
Alliance because they did not return a
questionnaire asking about their views
on LGBT issues and neither has a known
public record on LGBT matters.
Grosso received a +10 GLAA rating,
the highest possible rating on a scale of
-10 to +10. Robert White received a +8.5
GLAA rating, and Aikin received a +7.5
compared to Celnik, who received a +1.5.
Aikin said she has interacted with
members of the LGBT community since
the 1980s when she worked as a counselor
and nutritionist assisting people with HIV/
AIDS. She said her commitment to LGBT
equality is unwavering and as a Council
member she would be the most eective
in safeguarding LGBT equality.

I think outside the box and I do things

outside the box, she said.
GLAA also gave Gray and Evans a +10
rating. Todd and Trayon White, who
are running unopposed, received GLAA
ratings of +5 and +4 respectively.
In races for the D.C. State Board of
Education, Board President Jack Jacobson,
the citys highest-ranking openly gay
elected ocial, is running unopposed for
his seat representing Ward 2. Activists
have called Jacobson one of the boards
strongest allies on LGBT issues.
Other LGBT-supportive school board
members considered the front runners
in their respective races are Mary Lord,
who currently holds the boards at-large
seat; Lannette Woodru, whos running
unopposed for re-election to the Ward 4
seat; and Karen Williams, whos running
for re-election to the Ward 7 seat.
In the Ward 8 school board race, the
Stein Club has endorsed challenger Markus
Batchelor over incumbent Tierra Jolly and
challenger Shakira Hemphill. Batchelor,
who expressed strong support for LGBT
rights, is considered the underdog in the
race behind Jolly, who Ward 8 observers
believe is the frontrunner.
In a separate race, the citys shadow
U.S. Representative, Democrat Franklin
Garcia, is running unopposed for reelection. He has been an outspoken
supporter of LGBT rights.

Md., Va. voters to decide key races next week

Comstock tries to hold seat
in Fairfax.; Van Hollen likely
to succeed Mikulski
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
A Fairfax County Democrat who
is running against Congresswoman
Barbara Comstock continues to highlight
Comstocksrecord hostile toLGBT rights.
LuAnn Bennetts campaign is currently
running an ad on D.C. television stations
that notes Comstocks opposition to
marriage rights for same-sex couples. It
also highlights her vote against a proposal
that would have removed anti-LGBT
language from a defense spending bill.
The vote on the proposed amendment
took place on May 19.
Congresswoman Comstock is once
again on the wrong side of history and
squarely aligned with extreme forces
within her Republican caucus that wish

to discriminate against LGBT Americans,

said Bennett in a statement.
Bennett in the same statement noted
Comstock in June 2015 voted against
an amendment to a transportation and
housing appropriations bill that would have
prohibited the use of funds in violation of
President Obamas executive order banning
federal contractors from discriminating
against their LGBT employees.
Comstock was a member of the Virginia
House of Delegates before voters in the 10th
congressional district elected her to succeed
then-Congressman Frank Wolf in 2014.
Bennett notes Comstock in 2012
voted in favor of a bill that allows private
adoption and foster care agencies to
reject prospective parents based on
religious or moral beliefs. Equality Virginia
Executive Director James Parrish and
state Sen. Adam Ebbin (D-Alexandria) are
among those who criticized the measure
that then-Gov. Bob McDonnell signed.
Comstock supported gay Richmond
Circuit Court Judge Tracy ThorneBeglands nomination. She also voted

for a 2013 bill that sought to strengthen

schools anti-bullying policies.
Larry Sabato, director of the University
of Virginias Center for Politics, has
designated the race between Comstock
and Bennett as a toss-up.
Neither
campaign
returned
the
Washington Blades requests for comment.
The Human Rights Campaign has
endorsed Bennett and state Sen. A.
Donald McEachin (D-Henrico County),
who is running against Henrico County
Sheri Mike Wade in the 4th congressional
district. It also backs Congressmen Don
Beyer, Gerry Connolly and Bobby Scotts
re-election bids.
In Maryland, Congressman Chris Van
Hollen is expected to easily defeat state
Del. Kathy Szeliga (R-Baltimore and
Harford Counties) in the race to succeed
retiring U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.).
Van Hollen told the Blade in February that
advancing LGBT-specic issues was a priority
of mine when he served in the Maryland
General Assembly from 1991-2003.
He was among the members of the

Maryland Senate who led the eort

in support of a 2001 bill that banned
discrimination
based
on
sexual
orientation in Maryland. Van Hollen
also donated more than $20,000 to the
campaign that urged voters to support
the states 2012 same-sex marriage law.
Van Hollen is also a co-sponsor of the
Equality Act, which would add sexual
orientation and gender identity to federal
civil rights law.
If you havent organized around a
specic proposal, youre starting from
way behind, he told the Blade. So
putting forward the Equality Act, pushing
for it every day will hasten the day when
that will become the law of the land.
State Sen. Jamie Raskin (D-Montgomery
County) is expected to easily defeat
Dan Cox, a Frederick County attorney,
in the race to succeed Van Hollen in the
U.S. House of Representatives. Former
Lieutenant Gov. Anthony Brown, who
lost to Republican Gov. Larry Hogan
in 2014, will likely succeed outgoing
Congresswoman Donna Edwards.

With days to go, Clinton LGBT supporters condent of victory

But tightening polls
have many on edge
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
With less than one week remaining
before Election Day, LGBT supporters
of Hillary Clinton remain condent shes
headed to victory over Donald Trump in
her bid for the White House.
Richard Socarides, a gay New York-based
Democratic activist and Clinton supporter,
said hes feeling pretty condent Clinton
will win, but reminded LGBT people to go to
the polls to make it happen.
We all have to go vote though, Socarides
said. And everyone who can needs to
volunteer. It makes me crazy when I hear
people say Trump hasnt targeted us. When
he maligns and insults women and racial
and ethnic minorities, they are us. And the
actions he wants to take and the people he
wants to appoint to the Court, they will claw
back every advance weve made in the last
eight years.
Socarides said the thought of President
Trump is a nightmare scenario in part
because of the homophobes hell put on
the Supreme Court, which could reverse
advancements in LGBT rights.
Generally speaking, signs look good
for Clinton. Gay political statistician Nate
Silver, who operates FiveThirtyEight.com,

RICHARD SOCARIDES said the thought of a

President Trump is a nightmare scenario.

WASHINGTON BLADE FILE PHOTO BY MICHAEL KEY

gave Clinton a 70.7 percent chance of

winning the election as of Wednesday.
According to the New York Times,
Clinton enjoys a slim lead over Trump
in early-voter turnout in several swing
states. An estimated 21 million people
have already cast their ballots through
the early voting process, including close
to one-fourth of the electorate in states
likely to decide the election: Florida,
Colorado and Nevada.
But in the aftermath of FBI Director
James Comeys disclosure thata renewed
investigation into Clintons use of a
private email server is underway as
a result of new evidence found in a
separate investigation of Anthony Weiner
sexting an underage teen, there are signs

of trouble for Clinton.

A poll from ABC News, which has polled
presidential elections in the week before
Election Day each year since 1992, gave
Trump a one-point lead over Clinton. For
the most part, this ABC News poll has
correctly predicted the election, except in
2012 and 2004.
Another poll from WRAL News in the
swing state of North Carolina, where
Clinton previously enjoyed a slim lead,
shows Trump now enjoys a substantial
seven-point lead in the race. Fifty-one
percent of poll responders said they
would vote for Trump compared to 44
percent for Clinton.
Alvin McEwen, a gay Clinton supporter
and South Carolina blogger who writes
for Holy Bullies & Headless Monsters,
discounted the North Carolina poll as an
outlier and said others dont show the
same thing.
But regardless of how she has been
ahead or behind, I knew she wasnt going
to have an easy time of it, McEwen said.
Its not usual to have foreign bodies
working to make a candidate lose.
And Im talking Wikileaks, which I have
never trusted. I dont like foreign bodies
meddling in our elections. And thats not
even counting the FBI junk.
As LGBT advocates and Clinton
supporters point out, the LGBT rights
advances seen under eight years of
President Obama are riding on the

election. Trump has pledged to appoint

to the U.S. Supreme Court jurists in the
mold of the late U.S. Associate Justice
Antonin Scalia. That could result in the
reversal of the ruling in favor of marriage
equality nationwide, although such an
outcome is unlikely.
But its not just the Supreme Court.
Many of the LGBT rights advances are
the result of executive actions under the
Obama administration, and Trump, who
has vowedto roll back actions he believes
are unconstitutional, could reverse them.
The candidate has already said hed
reverse guidance protecting transgender
students at schools from discrimination.
Meanwhile,
Clinton
supports
comprehensive LGBT non-discrimination
legislation known as the Equality Act;
has committed to herself to tackling
anti-LGBT bullying, harassment and
violence; and has pledged to build on
Obamas executive actions to ensure the
prohibition on gender discrimination
under current law applies to LGBT people.
Hilary Rosen, a lesbian D.C.-based
Democratic
activist
and
Clinton
supporter, emphasized the risk to the
LGBT community of a Trump presidency.
I am condent that Hillary will win,
Rosen said. And nothing in Huma
Abedins emails would matter more to
me than the threat of a Supreme Court
whose justices are appointed by Donald
Trump and the GOP.

Hassan highlights pro-LGBT record in N.H. Senate race

Ayotte voted for transinclusive ENDA in 2013
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
The outcome of New Hampshires
hotly contested U.S. Senate race could
determine whether Democrats regain
control of the chamber.
A poll that the University of New
Hampshire Survey Center and WMUR, a
local television station, conducted between
Oct. 26-30 found Gov. Maggie Hassan is
ahead of incumbent U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte
(R-N.H.) by a 46-44 percent margin. Ayotte
was ahead of Hassan by a 50-44 percent
margin in a survey that Emerson College
conducted between Oct. 23-25.
The Human Rights Campaign has
endorsed Hassan.
The advocacy group earlier this week
released an online video that contains a
clip of her speaking in support of LGBT
rights during an interview with WMUR.
The video also contains clips of Hillary
Clinton, who HRC has also endorsed.

New Hampshire has a long tradition of

inclusiveness, says Hassan. We all grow
stronger together, regardless of sexual
orientation or gender identity.
Hassans campaign website says
she led the eort to achieve marriage
equality in New Hampshire in 2009 when
she was a member of the New Hampshire
Senate. It also notes the Granite State
was among the states that urged the
U.S. Supreme Court to rule in favor of
marriage rights for same-sex couples in
the Obergefell case.
Hassan in June issued an executive
order that bans discrimination in state
government based on gender identity.
The state Senate in 2009 voted
unanimously to kill a bill that would have
added trans-specic protections to the
states nondiscrimination law. Hassan,
who was a senator at the time, told
members of the Democratic National
Committees LGBT Caucus with whom
she spoke at the Democratic National
Convention that she supports the
Equality Act, which would add sexual
orientation and gender identity to
federal civil rights law.

Hassan also supports increased

funding for HIV/AIDS research. Hassans
campaign website notes she will ght any
eort to undermine marriage equality
and oppose eorts to restrict adoption
rights for same-sex couples.
In the U.S. Senate, Maggie will continue
to ght for policies to ensure that all
citizens are fully included in our civic
and economic life, regardless of sexual
orientation or gender identity, it reads.
Log Cabin Republicans last month
endorsed Ayotte, U.S. Sen. Rob Portman
(R-Ohio) and other GOP senators who
voted to advance a trans-inclusive
version of the Employment NonDiscrimination Act in 2013. The measure
has not gone to a full vote in either the

House of Representatives.
I am honored to accept the
endorsement of Log Cabin Republicans
and grateful for their partnership as we
work towards our shared goal of a strong
national defense, scal responsibility and
individual freedoms for all Granite Staters
and Americans, said Ayotte in a statement
that Log Cabin Republicans released after

it announced their endorsement of her

re-election campaign.
Ayotte was New Hampshires attorney
general when then-Gov. John Lynch signed
the states same-sex marriage law in 2009.
Hassan told members of the DNCs LGBT
Caucus that Ayotte backed eorts to repeal
the statute once it took eect in 2010.
Ayotte stressed her belief in traditional
marriage in her statement on the
Obergefell ruling. She also noted that
she respects the landmark decision that
extended marriage rights to gays and
lesbians across the country.
I believe New Hampshires legally
married same-sex couples should be
treated equally under the law no matter
where they live, said Ayotte.
Hassan has also noted her opponent
opposed the repeal of Dont Ask, Dont Tell
and adoption rights for same-sex couples.
Ayotte last month announced she
would not vote for Donald Trump. She
said she plans to write in Trumps running
mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, who
opposes LGBT-specic issues.
Ayottes campaign did not return the
Washington Blades request for comment.

LGBT hopefuls face steep odds in bids for Congress

But six incumbent House
members look safe
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
A plethora of non-incumbent openly LGBT
candidates is seeking election to Congress
this year, but a look at the polls reveals many
of them are facing an uphill climb.
The Washington Blade identied 10
openly LGBT non-incumbent candidates
running for seats in the U.S. House
and U.S. Senate in 2016, including two
candidates who are the rst-ever openly
transgender people to win nominations
from a major U.S. political party, two
openly gay Republicans and a candidate
whod be the rst out lesbian with
children elected to Congress.
The best prospect in this lot is business
executive Angie Craig, a lesbian Democrat
running against Republican Jason Lewis to
represent Minnesotas 2nd congressional
district, which comprises suburbs of the
Twin Cities.
According to a KSTP/SurveyUSA poll
published on Oct. 17, Craig has a lead
with 46 percent of the vote compared
to the 41 percent who support her
opponent, although 12 percent of voters
were undecided.
A victory for Craig would mean
Democrats retake a seat held by
Republicans for 13 years, most recently
by anti-LGBT Rep. John Kline (R-Minn.),
whos retiring this year. Additionally,
it would mark the rst time since Sen.
Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) left the House
to serve in the Senate that an out lesbian
served in the House as well as the rst
time a married lesbian with children
served in Congress.
Kyle Kondik, managing editor for
Sabatos Crystal Ball at the University of
Virginia Center for Politics, said Craig has
a good chance of winning the race.
She is a small favorite thanks to a
controversial opponent and Clintons
likely ability to run ahead of Obamas
2012 performance in this suburban swing
district, Kondik said.
Another bright spot lies in the six
incumbent openly LGB members of the
U.S. House. Reps. Jared Polis (D-Colo.),
David Cicilline (D-R.I.), Mark Takano
(D-Calif.), Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.), Mark
Pocan (D-Wis.) and Sean Patrick Maloney
(D-N.Y.) are Democrats and relatively
safe as they pursue re-election during a
presidential year with Hillary Clinton at the
top of the ballot. The Blade couldnt nd
polls bothering to monitor these races.
But the good news ends there for LGBT
congressional candidates. The two openly
LGBT candidates running for seats in the
U.S. Senate Lexington Mayor Jim Gray

Non-incumbent LGBT candidates include (top left to right) Angie Craig, Bao Nguyen, Paul Babeu,
Misty Snow, Dr. Matt Heinz; (bottom row left to right) Clay Cope, Denise Juneau, Matt Heinz, Jim
Gray and Misty Plowright.

in Kentucky and Misty Snow in Utah

face daunting odds, according to polls.
In Kentucky, Gray is challenging
Republican
presidential
candidate
and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who has
overwhelming name recognition in the
Bluegrass State. Grays election would
double the openly gay representation in
the U.S. Senate, but that doesnt look to
be in the cards.
A WKU Social Science Research Center
poll published on Tuesday found Paul has 55
percent of support compared to the 39 percent
for Gray and six percent who are undecided.
In Utah, Snow made history by being
the rst openly transgender person
nominated by a major U.S. party for a U.S.
Senate seat, but faces overwhelming odds
against incumbent Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah).
A UtahPolicy.com survey published last
month found Snow trailing Lee by a
whopping 39 points. Lee had 61 percent
support, while Snow had just 22 percent.
In Colorado, Army veteran Misty Plowright
made history on the same day as Snow
by becoming the rst openly transgender
person nominated by a major U.S. party for
a U.S. House race, but she faces daunting
odds in the states 5th congressional district
against ve-term incumbent Rep. Doug
Lamborn (R-Colo.). The Blade couldnt nd a
poll monitoring the election.
The situation is reversed in terms of
party in a Connecticut race. Clay Cope,
an openly gay Republican who serves
on the board of selectman for the town
of Sherman, faces an overwhelming
challenge in his bid to unseat two-

term incumbent Rep. Elizabeth Esty

(D-Conn.), who represents the states 5th
congressional district. No polls could be
found monitoring this race.
In Arizonas 1st congressional district,
Pinal County Sheri Paul Babeu, who
came out as gay in 2012 amid controversy
during an earlier congressional bid,
is running against Democratic former
state Sen. Tom OHalleran. It was once
considered a competitive race, but a
poll commissioned by the Democratic
Congressional Campaign Committee
made public last month found OHalleran
had opened up a 10-point lead over his
gay Republican challenger.
In Californias 46th congressional
district, two Democrats former State
Sen. Lou Correa and gay candidate Bao
Nguyen are running against each
other as a result of the states so-called
jungle primary, which allows the top
two voter-getters regardless of party to
proceed to the general election.
But Correa won the most votes in the
June primary. Last month, a poll from
his campaign found he had a 2-1 margin
over his opponent. According to the poll,
which found Correa had support among
47 percent of respondents, the number of
undecided voters, 30 percent, was higher
than the 23 percent who supported Nguyen.
Washingtons 7th congressional district
is in a similar situation because two
Democrats State Sen. Pramila Jayapal
and gay State Rep. Brady Walkinshaw
are running in the general election as a
result of the states jungle primary system.

But the Bernie Sanders-backed Jayapal,

who would be the rst South Asian
woman elected to Congress, trounced
Walkinshaw in the primary and a poll
unveiled by her campaign in August, as
reported by the Seattle-based Stranger,
found she was up 14 points heading into
the general election.
In Arizonas 2nd congressional district,
gay physician Matt Heinz is challenging
incumbent Rep. Martha McSally (R-Ariz.).
A Wilson Perkins Allen Research poll
published in September found McSally
has a double-digit lead with 56 percent
of support compared to the 37 percent
enjoyed by Heinz.
Kondik attributed Heinz standing
behind McSally in the race to neglect
at the national level and the eort the
Republican has placed in the race.
It would be a big surprise if he won given
that Martha McSally, the incumbent, is wellfunded and has worked the district hard,
Kondik said. National Democrats never
took much interest in his candidacy.
In Montana, where the race for U.S.
House is for an at-large seat, State
Superintendent of Public Instruction
Denise Juneau, who would be the
rst lesbian Native American elected
to Congress, is challenging freshman
incumbent Rep. Ryan Zinke (R-Mont.).
Although Juneau once boasted a small
decit in the polls, that decit seems to
have expanded. A poll published last
month by the Mason-Dixon polling rm
found Zinke leading Juneau by a margin
of 53 percent to 40 percent.
Of these non-incumbent candidates, the
Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund has endorsed
one of the Senate candidates, Gray, as
well as ve of the House candidates:
Heinz, Walkinshaw, Craig, Nguyen and
Juneau. Snow, Babeu, Plowright and Cope
arent among the endorsed candidates.
The organization is known to endorse
only openly LGBT candidates that have a
reasonable chance of winning.
Aisha Moodie-Mills, CEO of the
Victory Fund, was optimistic despite
the challenges these candidates face,
pointing to internal early vote numbers,
and said the endorsed candidates are
running great campaigns and could
dramatically increase our numbers in the
next Congress.
Angie Craig, Denise Juneau, Matt Heinz
and Brady Walkinshaw are proof that
the right LGBT candidates with the right
message can run and win competitive
campaigns anywhere, Moodie-Mills said.
Were looking forward to seeing just how
large the Equality Caucus will grow on
election night but this week is critical.
While early vote numbers look good for
our races, our community has to turn
out and urge friends and family in those
districts to vote for equality.

Thiel defends Trump, says hell be expansive on LGBT rights

Criticizes Advocate
magazine during D.C. event
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
Gay billionaire Peter Thiel, who gained
notoriety both in Silicon Valley and in
the LGBT community for his support
of Donald Trump, defended his choice
Monday by insisting the Republican
candidate gets right the harm the status
quo has caused America.
A co-founder of PayPal and Facebook
board member, Thiel made the case for his
candidateduring an event at the National
Press Club in D.C. shortly after donating
$1.25 million to the Trump campaign.
Thiel acknowledged 2016 has been a
crazy election year and compared the
campaign to a skit on NBCs Saturday
Night Live, but said it is less crazy than
the condition of our country.
Not everyone is hurting, Thiel said. In the
wealthy suburbs that ring Washington, D.C.,
people are doing just ne. Where I worked
in Silicon Valley, people are doing just great.
But most Americans dont live by the Beltway
or the San Francisco Bay. Most Americans
havent been part of that prosperity.
Among the problems Thiel cited in the
United States are a health care system
that he said subsidizes the world, but
doesnt help Americans; an education
system in which students take on
increasing debt they cant escape even
in bankruptcy; stagnant income and the
wasting of money on foreign wars.
Thiel said the candidates supporters
continue to back him because of the big
things Trump gets right.
Free trade has not worked out well
for all of America, Thiel said. It helps
Trump that the other side just doesnt
get it. All of our elites preach free trade.
The highly educated people who make
public policy explain that cheap imports
make everyone a winner, according to
economic theory, but in actual practice,
weve lost tens of thousands of factories
and millions of jobs to foreign trade. The
heartland has been devastated.
Thiel, who declared hes proud to
be gay at the Republican National
Convention, has faced criticism in the
LGBT community for supporting Trump,
who opposes marriage equality and has
staked out other anti-LGBT positions
duringhis campaign.
Making the case louder voices wont
tolerate views of one-half of the country,
Thiel criticizedthe Advocate magazine over
an op-ed saying he shouldnt be called gay,
despite his declaration in Cleveland, because
of the words political connotations.
This intolerance has taken on some
bizarre forms, Thiel said. The Advocate,
a magazine which once praised me as a

gay innovator even published an article

claiming that as of now Im, and I quote,
not a gay man, unquote because I dont
agree with their politics. The lie behind
the buzzword of diversity could not be
made more clear: If you dont conform,
then you dont count as diverse, no
matter what your personal background.
Calling both major presidential nominees
imperfect, Thiel also said he doesnt
agree with Trump about everything and
condemned the 2005 recording unearthed
in early October in which the candidate was
heard bragging about sexual assault.
Nobody thinks his comments about
women were acceptable, Thiel said. I
agree they were clearly oensive and
inappropriate, but I dont think the
voters pull a lever in order to endorse
a candidates aws. Its not a lack of
judgment that leads Americans to vote for
Trump; were voting for Trump because
we judge the leadership of our country
that failed.
Thiel also faulted Hillary Clinton, saying
her idea to impose a no-y zone over
Syria would risk a direct nuclear conict
with Russia.
Incredibly, that would be a mistake
even more reckless than invading Iraq,
Thiel said. Since most of the planes ying
over Syria today are Russian planes, taking
that as the rst choice of action would do
worse than involve us in a messy civil war,
it would risk a direct nuclear conict.
Thiel, who said he supported Ron Paul
in 2008 and 2012 and Carly Fiorina early
on in the 2016 election, said he hoped
to see a match between Trump and
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) because both

candidates challenged the establishment.

I think both of them viscerally felt the
decline and viscerally, they very much
disagreed about what caused it, what to
do about it, but that would have been a
very dierent sort of debate, Thiel said.
What we have is a debate between the
one candidate who says everything is
more or less ne, or is as good as it can
be, and the another one who says, Were
on the Titanic thats about to sink, so I
prefer the second one.
Under questioning from moderator
and National Press Club President
Thomas Burr, Thiel distanced himself
from other Trump proposals, such as a
ban on Muslims from entering the United
States or the candidates proposal to
open the nations libel laws.
The media is always taking Trump
literally, Thiel said. It never takes him
seriously; it always takes him literally. I
think a lot of the voters who vote for Trump
take Trump seriously, but not literally. So
when they hear things like the Muslim
comment, or the wall comment, things like
that, the question is not whether youre
going to build a wall like the Great Wall
of China, or how exactly are you going
to enforce these tests. What they hear is
were going to have a saner, more sensible
immigration policy. Were going to try
to gure out how do we strike the right
balance between cost and benets.
Asked whether Trump is a successful
business person, Thiel said Trump is a
very successful real estate developer,
but cant render an evaluation because
the nature of the technology business is
dierent from real estate.

We can debate how many zeroes he

has exactly in his net worth, but has a lot,
he has a huge number even, Thiel said.
In response to a question submitted by
the Washington Blade on whether Trump
would roll back LGBT rights or reverse the
Supreme Court ruling in favor of samesex marriage, Thiel said he hasnt had
that conversation with Trump.
I do think that he represents a sea
change for the Republican Party of Bush
43, Thiel said. Just think about the way
Bush 43 was speaking negatively about
gay marriage at every single campaign
event in the 2004 election. Its something
where Trump has everything he
indicated is that he would be quite
expansive on gay rights.
Despite the criticism he faced for
supporting Trump, Thiel said his
friendships and business relationships
have remained intact.
Thiel also said he knows not a
large number, but a small number of
individuals in Silicon Valley who support
Trump but havent said so publicly out of
fear of reprisals.
Outed as gay by the now-defunct
website Gawker, Thiel also defended
thelawsuit he funded against the website
over the its publication of a sex tape
featuring Hulk Hogan, which forced the
company to close, denying the litigation
sets a dangerous precedent.
If you make a sex tape of someone
with their permission, you are a
pornographer, Thiel said. If you make
a sex tape without their permission, we
are told now you are a journalist. I would
submit that is an insult to all journalists.
The entrepreneur called Gawkers
action the most egregious violation
of privacy imaginable, which is why
he said the website lost the lawsuit
catastrophically.
Insisting he thinks journalists are a
privileged group, Thiel said he doesnt
think what happened to Gawker could
happen to other news outlets and more
generally discouraged similar litigation.
As for a future for himself in politics,
Thiel said he will occasionally get involved,
but plans to remain in the technology
industry and doesnt want to make
politics a full-time career.
I always have this somewhat
schizophrenic view of politics, where I
think its a horrible business, its incredibly
destructive, a lot of it is like trench warfare
on the western front where theres crazy
amounts of carnage and nothing ever
changes, Thiel said. Thats one part of
my schizophrenic view. The other part is
that it is really important. Theres some
problems that cant be solved outside
of this political arena and the way that
I deal with my schizophrenia is that I
occasionally get involved, but dont want
to make it a full-time thing.

on Oct. 26. Unlike the
contentious
town
hall in July 2014 when
community members were vociferous in their criticism of the centers leadership
on a number of fronts, this meeting was tranquil and brimming with positivity
and optimism.
Jabari Lyles, president of the board, introduced board members and sta to a
dozen community members. He noted that there are nine board vacancies, and
he and the other board members will be actively recruiting to ll those seats.
Lyles announced that Baltimore Pride, the principal fundraiser for the GLCCB,
showed a prot of over $80,000 in 2016 compared to over $49,000 the previous
year. In 2016, Prides prot represented 37 percent of income compared
to 27 percent in 2015 indicating more revenue and fewer expenditures on a
percentage basis in 2016.
The Pride 2017 committee has already met three times, but no decisions have
been made as to the dates of the event or the venue. Several options are on
the table including the possibility of moving Pride out of the traditional Mount
Vernon locale.
Though Pride is the best known activity of the GLCCB, Kenneth Morrison, the
newly appointed director of programs, explained that the core of the centers
mission is its programs. The GLCCB has been primarily youth oriented, such as
the planned hosting of drop-in sessions for individuals ages 18-30 on alternate
Saturdays, but leaders promise to do a better job reaching out to elders.
One of the three components of the GLCCBs programs is direct services.
There are three case managers or peer navigators on the sta who can connect
anyone coming to the center to services and resources in such areas as housing,
transportation, employment and healthcare.
Another area is advocacy in which the center hopes to increase its involvement
in Baltimore City and in particular, to advocate for safe schools.
A third element is education whereby organizations and individuals are
educated as to the best way to interact.
The GLCCB oers free space, and with its new expanded oces, it can hold
several meetings simultaneously.
Community members weighed in about the GLCCBs mission. One man
asked about solving the divisions in the community. Lyles acknowledged that
these divisions exist especially along racial, class and gender lines; however, he
said the GLCCBs role is to provide an opportunity for the community to have
conversations and look inward.
Other matters discussed included building a bridge with the Center for Black
Equity Baltimore and making Pride more elder-friendly.

NEW YORK Researchers are now saying that the strain of HIV responsible for
almost all AIDS cases in the U.S. was carried from Zaire to Haiti around 1967 and
spread from there to New York City about 1971, according to new information
published in the journal Nature reported on by the New York Times and other
outlets. From New York, it spread to San Francisco around 1976.
The new information appears to exonerate Gaetan Dugas, the FrenchCanadian ight attendant long known as patient zero who was though to have
brought HIV to the U.S.
The new data is consistent with the scenario described in 2011 in The Origin
of AIDS, by Dr. Jacques Ppin, an infectious disease specialist at the University
of Sherbrooke in Quebec.
Relying on previous genetic research and African colonial records, Ppin
showed that HIV was carried from Kinshasa to Haiti in the 1960s, most likely by
one of the thousands of Haitian civil servants recruited by the United Nations
to work in the former Belgian Congo after colonial rule collapsed, the Times
reports.
In Haiti, he theorized, a few cases were multiplied by unsterile conditions at
a private blood-collecting company Hemo-Caribbean, that opened in 1971 and
exported 1,600 gallons of plasma to the United States monthly. Plasma clotting
factors were used by American hemophiliacs, many of whom died of AIDS.
Haiti was also a sex-tourism destination for gay men, another route the virus
could have taken to New York.
The blood samples analyzed in the new study were collected in 1978 and 1979
in New York City and San Francisco as part of an eort to make a hepatitis B
vaccine. Researchers stored almost 16,000 blood samples; nearly 7 percent of
those from New York and 4 percent of those from California later turned out to
be infected with HIV, the New York Times reports.
A team led by Michael Worobey, an evolutionary biologist at the University
of Arizona in Tucson and the lead author of the Nature paper, sequenced the
genomes of the HIV found in some of those samples and compared them with
viral DNA in samples collected in the early 1980s from Haitians, Dominicans and
others treated in American hospitals, according to the Times article.
Because decades spent in freezers had degraded many samples, Worobey
said, his lab developed an RNA jackhammering technique similar to that used
to reconstruct the ancient Neanderthal genome. Counting mutations allowed
the researchers to wind back the molecular clock and see when each strain of
HIV diverged from its ancestors, the Times reports.
Africa has a dozen HIV groups, and Haitis epidemic came from one of those.
The New York samples all derive from one Haitian strain, and those from San
Francisco are all so closely related that they probably all resulted from one

Latest email ap is much

ado about not much
Ignore the October surprise
and vote for Clinton

KEVIN NAFF is editor of the Washington Blade

and can be reached at kna@washblade.com.

Dont be distracted by Octobers surprise.

The news that FBI Director James Comey is
searching through thousands of emails from
Anthony Weiners laptop that may or may
not have some tenuous connection to Hillary Clinton is much ado about not much.
Tens of thousands of Clintons emails
have already been investigated and released and the most surprising thing
about the whole episode is the lack of
a smoking gun. As Clinton herself has
joked, her emails are mundane, even boring. Who among us could survive a leak
of our emails, where we have an expectation of privacy and where we express
our candid thoughts on business dealings
and personal travails?

Donald Trump predictably reveled in

the news, sending his mindless followers
into a chorus of lock her up, completely
oblivious to the fact that their guy faces
a federal lawsuit led by a woman who
claims Trump raped her in 1994 when she
was 13. A status hearing on that lawsuit is
set for Dec. 16. In it, the accuser claims,
Defendant Trump initiated sexual contact with Plainti at four dierent parties.
On the fourth and nal sexual encounter
with Defendant Trump, Defendant Trump
tied Plainti to a bed, exposed himself
to Plainti, and then proceeded to forcibly rape Plainti. During the course of
this savage sexual attack, Plainti loudly
pleaded with Defendant Trump to stop
but with no eect. Defendant Trump responded to Plaintis pleas by violently
striking Plainti in the face with his open
hand and screaming that he would do
whatever he wanted.
Thats not Trumps only legal headache. He also faces a lawsuit led by
former students of his so-called Trump
University, which was labeled a lie by
its former managers. The case will probe
whether Trump knowingly participated
in a scheme to defraud.
Given all that, it makes perfect sense for
the media to spend the last week of this
mind boggling campaign talking about
E DIT OR IA L C A R T OON

more Clinton emails and for the polls to

tighten as a result. Never mind that Trump
has been denounced and dismissed by
most establishment Republicans, including House Speaker Paul Ryan and most
recently Gen. Colin Powell. Trumps only
surrogates are an increasingly loony Rudy
Giuliani and Chachi from Happy Days.
Regardless of what you might think
of Clintons record, it is imperative that
Trump be kept from the White House.
Military experts and retired generals have
openly fretted about Trumps tiny ngers
on the nuclear button. Leading economists have warned that Trumps tax plan
and spending priorities will lead us into
another crippling recession and add to
the national debt. Foreign policy experts
fear a Trump presidency would alienate key allies, encourage nuclear proliferation and give cover to the murderous
thug in the Kremlin. And on LGBT rights,
the choice is equally clear.
Clinton will appoint Supreme Court
justices who would uphold marriage
equality. She has pledged to support the
Equality Act and to end widely discredited
ex-gay conversion therapy for minors. In
addition, she has said she would expand
access to HIV prevention and treatment;
confront disproportionate violence facing transgender people, especially trans
women of color; and continue her work
as former secretary of state on international LGBT rights.
Trump, meanwhile, has pledged to immediately revoke President Obamas executive orders, which would certainly include
the order that bars discrimination against
LGBT employees of federal contractors.
That order covers about 20 percent of the
entire American workforce. The thricemarried Trump has also promised to nominate Supreme Court justices who would
overturn the Obergefell ruling. He has endorsed the First Amendment Defense Act,
a federal version of the so-called religious
freedom bills that have emerged in North
Carolina and elsewhere that would legalize discrimination against LGBT Americans
from coast to coast.
So dont be distracted. Go vote for Hillary Clinton an ally who will ensure the
progress the LGBT community has seen
these past eight remarkable years will not
only be protected, but will grow.

LGBT Presidential Appointments Initiative heats up

A project to boost diversity
in government hiring

PETER ROSENSTEIN is a D.C.-based LGBT rights

and Democratic Party activist. He writes regularly
for the Blade.

As we get close to electing our next president, thoughts turn to the transition teams
working to help sta up the new administration. While each of the major candidates has
one, only one will continue to work, gear up
and be in full operation beginning Nov. 9.
There are thousands of jobs in a new administration to be lled. Positions at every
level of government. Some such as Cabinet
secretaries and ambassadors will require
Senate conrmation, others the new president can appoint and they can get to work
immediately. These are jobs in the White
House and all federal agencies and require
a broad range of skills.

There are many routes to securing a job in

the new administration and the best known is
Who do you know? Some of the jobs will go
to those who worked hard on the campaign.
That can mean anything from working fulltime at campaign headquarters, being a eld
organizer, bundling or donating money, making phone calls, knocking on doors or having
lled any one of the crucial roles that exist in a
presidential campaign.
One route that has been successful for
members of the LGBT community since its
creation is The Presidential Appointments
Initiative led by the Gay & Lesbian Victory
Institute. PAI serves as a talent bank for
openly LGBT professionals seeking opportunities to improve our federal governments
policies and processes. This initiative falls
under the able direction of Ruben J. Gonzales, vice president of leadership initiatives at
the Victory Fund. It was formed in 2007 and
found tremendous success in having the
members of the LGBT community whose
resumes they submitted to the Obama transition team, and then the administration,
hired. Reggie Greer, a former appointee in
the Obama administration, has been named
the new director of PAI. He will have at least
three sta members providing support and
PAI is in the process of recruiting current

and former Obama appointees who will volunteer additional support.

PAI is leading a coalition of more than 25 organizations that will identify and put forward
exemplary LGBT candidates for all levels of the
federal government, and advocate for their
consideration. This year PAI also announced it
aims to increase and diversify the pool of candidates and selection of LGBT appointed ocials. The goal is to have the new administration appointees be even more representative
of LGBT demographics nationwide.
The LGBT community is diverse and the
PAI wants to ensure when it is asked for
recommendations it has a set of resumes
representing the diversity of the LGBT
community to put forward. There are four
specic new areas they are focused on:
women, transgender individuals, people
of color and people living outside the Beltway. The last one isnt often thought of but
has been added because it is important to
have those in government represent the
ideas of people who may not be living in
the vortex of politics, D.C. and its suburbs.
Not to say people living in D.C. arent qualied, but it is important to go across the nation when collecting resumes to submit to
the new administration.
In addition, particularly if Hillary Clinton is

elected, it will be important for the PAI to look

for resumes of qualied people in the LGBT
community who may have a disability. Hillary
has made reaching out to the disability community a major focus of her campaign and it
has been a focus of her life since she worked
for the Childrens Defense Fund.
Whether you are a recent graduate or
a seasoned professional, if you have ever
considered public service, now is the time
to share your expertise and give our community a voice at the table. Even if you know
someone you think is connected, or worked
on the campaign, you should still put your
resume in the PAI resume bank. The transition team will be asking the PAI for recommendations and resumes of people to ll
positions at every level of government. In
addition to full-time appointed positions
there are literally thousands of opportunities to serve on boards, advisory committees and grant reviewing groups across the
country. These bodies make recommendations on how government can work better,
smarter and more eectively.
So get the process started today. Its easy to
upload your resume at the PAI website. If you
have submitted one previously either submit
a new one or make sure the one in the data
bank is up to date.

America nears the womens hour

Witch hunters ght
to prevent historic
breakthrough

RICHARD J. ROSENDALL is a writer and activist.

Reach him at rrosendall@starpower.net.

The ancient Celts considered this the time

of year when the border between our world
and the next is most permeable. Witches and
goblins move among us. Most of us make a
game of this, but some Christian conservatives
are seriously haunted. Combining this tradition with their conviction that humanitys fallen state was caused by Eves temptation, it is
a short step to blame their miseries, real and
imagined, on women they treat like witches.
Biblical literalists hit women with several
verses: Exodus 22:18, Do not allow a sorceress to live. 1 Timothy 2:12, I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority
over a man; she must be silent. Ephesians

5:22, Wives, submit to your husbands as to

the Lord.
It is thus hardly surprising that the rst
woman presidential nominee of a major party
is not merely opposed but demonized by
Christian conservatives. Self-styled prophetic
minister Jennifer LeClaire asked in August, Is
Hillary Clinton the Antichrist or an Illuminati
Witch? Such libels have an old pedigree: Menstruation follows a lunar cycle. Hysteria is
from the Latin for uterus. Independent women are sinister.
On an October evening six days after the
Hunters Moon, I dined with a Wiccan friend.
Honoring the season, I raised my glass to the
preservation of witches, the 17th Century hunt
for which in Salem, Mass., was echoed three
centuries later during the postwar Red Scare.
As with immigrants, I nd real-life witches
more companionable and decent than many
of their detractors.
Secretary Clinton is actually a Methodist.
Her shortcomings could be discussed without resort to otherworldly speculations, but
her haters cannot resist. With her opponent
manifestly unt and threatening not to recognize the election results, and with decades
of anti-Clinton smears gaining little traction,
Republicans needed some renewed skullduggery. With help from FBI Director James Com-

ey, Rep. Jason Chaetz (R-Utah), who already

threatened years of investigations against
Clinton, set o a media frenzy on Oct. 28 with
the equivalent of a campre ghost story spun
into a real spiders nest.
Comey wrote a letter to the chairs and ranking members of various congressional committees suggesting that an unrelated investigation might shed light on Clintons emails.
According to Jane Mayer in The New Yorker,
Attorney General Loretta Lynch expressed
her preference that Comey follow the departments longstanding practice of not commenting on ongoing investigations, and not taking
any action that could inuence the outcome of
an election, but he said that he felt compelled
to do otherwise.
Chaetz immediately released the letter
publicly, his spin supplanting its vagueness.
Though Comey stated that the FBI cannot yet
assess whether or not this material may be
signicant (he hadnt yet obtained a warrant),
he had to have known that Chaetz would exploit it.
Trump learned of it in time to delay a rally so
he could deliver another hasty condemnation
of Crooked Hillary with no evidence. Over the
weekend, Comey came under re for politicizing his agency, while Trump brazenly talked of
Clintons mounting legal problems despite

facing fraud and child rape charges of his own.

The unrelated investigation mentioned in
Comeys letter is the Anthony Weiner sexting
case. He is already estranged from wife Huma
Abedin, a top Clinton aide. Punishing women
for mens transgressions is another injustice
with biblical precedents.
Speaker Ryan urges intelligence ocials
to cancel Clintons classied briengs even as
his own partys nominee boasts of the constitutional protections he will sweep aside. Republicans political nihilism and sexist double
standards drive them to ignore the real Kremlin spooks aiding Trump while they punk the
media and try to scare voters with ectoplasm
from their scandal factory. They would wreck
our republic to restore an exclusive white
Christian patriarchy. But they are standing on
its rotting con.
Women helped build this country. They are
equal citizens. Secretary Clinton is well qualied and, unlike her opponent, has a temperament suited to the job. It is long past time to
excise our cultures prehistoric contempt toward women. It will not be easy, but we can
take a big forward step on Nov. 8 by tearing
down the boys only sign from our nations
highest oce.

Queer quests

A BRIEF HISTORY OF LGBT INVOLVEMENT IN PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGNS

By MARK CARLSON-GHOST
Special to the Washington Blade

WILLIAM RUFUS KING, Franklin Pierces vice president, was known for his amboyant fashion sense.

EDITORS NOTE: Mark Carlson-Ghost is an

associate professor at the Minnesota School
of Professional Psychology at Argosy University. The following is taken from research hes
conducting for an upcoming book called The
Lavender White House: Queer Lives, American
Presidents. He can be found online at markcarlson-ghost.com.

With
Anderson
Cooper
having
moderated the Oct. 9 debate, Robby
Mook running Hillary Clintons campaign
and Peter Thiel and transgender activist
Sarah McBride speaking at the party
conventions, this year may well be a
turning point for LGBT involvement in
presidential campaigns. But the truth is
queer men and women have been trying
to inuence the outcomes of presidential
elections for a very long time. Or, at least,
men and women we might reasonably
consider queer today.

Buchanan and King,

comrades in campaigning

Long before James Buchanan won

the presidency himself, the bachelor

congressman from Pennsylvania aspired
to be a power broker in the contested
election of 1824. In a meeting with Andrew
Jackson he attempted to solicit inside
information, but a disorder of the eye
made the war hero think that Buchanan
was winking at him conspiratorially.
By 1844, Buchanan was inseparable
from Alabama Sen. William Rufus King,
the two were referred to the Siamese
twins. King was fond of jewelry and
powdered wigs long after they were
out of fashion. Buchanan and King had
entertained hopes to run as a North/
South ticket that year. When the odds of
that dimmed, King considered running as
a vice president with someone else.
Aaron Brown, a congressman from
Tennessee, summarized these goings
on in a letter to a friend. Considering
a divorce, Brown wrote, Aunt Fancy
can now be seen every day in her best
clothes, seeking a more politically
advantageous running mate. Neither

man got on the ticket that year.

After another failed attempt at a joint
run, King was chosen to run as vice
president with Franklin Pierce in 1852.
The two men won the election, but Kings
health was failing and hed traveled to
Cuba for a rest cure. Sadly, King died a
few weeks later. Buchanan nally became
president in 1856, just in time to preside
over the break-up of the Union. Some
guys just cant seem to catch a break.

Lincolns queer campaigners

In 1860, noted author Bayard Taylor
campaigned for Abraham Lincoln and
won himself a diplomatic post in Russia
as a result. Likely bisexual, Taylor later
wrote Joseph and His Friend, the rst
American novel celebrating love between
two men.
Anna Dickinson, Americas most
celebrated female orator, was in the
midst of ripping on Lincoln during the
1864 campaign when the Lincolns just

happened to enter the lecture hall. To

the surprise of those gathered, the nevermarried Dickinson ended up publicly
endorsing him.
Susan B. Anthony, who was actively
supporting Lincolns opponent, found
it hard to stay mad at the fetching
Dickinson, with whom she was actively
irting. As Lillian Faderman has detailed,
a surprisingly passionate Anthony wrote
Dickinson that she hoped to snuggle
her and hold her in these strong arms of
mine, assuring the orator that her bed
was big enough to take you in.
Years later, Dickinson was hired by
the Republican Party to give speeches
across the country on behalf of their 1888
candidate, Benjamin Harrison. Harrison
won, but Dickinson felt the Republicans
only paid her part of what theyd agreed
upon. It turned out to be Dickinsons last
hurrah on the national stage.

How long have you been out and who was

the hardest person to tell?
I came out during my junior year of college,
a little over six years ago. As trite as it might
sound, I think the hardest person to tell was
actually myself. I grew up very religious,
and fell sway to the message of reparative
therapy that I could rewire my same-sex
attractions if only I bonded more with my
father, got interested in sports, stopped
hanging out with so many theater girls, etc.
Once I untangled that whole mess, though,
telling everyone else was a breeze.

DAN MILLIKEN
By JOEY DiGULIELMO
joeyd@washblade.com
Dan Milliken was tired of the same straight, white, male voices in improv
he was used to seeing in standup comedy. But he knew a handful of gay
performers in other troupes and decided to see if theyd be interested in
joining him in something queerer.
Happily, they agreed, Milliken says. It felt fresh and sort of disruptive to
throw a bunch of uppity queers together and see what havoc we might wreak.
Their group, dubbed simply Ugh, will perform at the fourth annual District
Improv Festival which runs Nov. 9-12 at Source (1835 14th St., N.W.) and
Unied Scene Theater (80 T St., N.W.). Admission ranges from free to $15 for
various events. Full details at districtimprov.org. Local talent as well as groups
from as far away as Phoenix and Toronto will appear.
For the festival, Ugh plans a brief, informal interview with a random
audience member followed by a wholly improvised set of scenes inspired by
whatever comes up in the interview.
Milliken loves the format because it invariably comes out kind of loose and
goofy, but with these moments of uncalculated honesty.
At its best, you get to see the real human experience but ltered through this
lens of joy and levity, the 27-year-old Bethesda, Md., native says. I love that.
Milliken works by day as a server and bartender at Commissary. Hes
single and lives in Logan Circle. He enjoys performing, teaching and directing
comedy and theater, songwriting, hiking, camping and drinking on patios in
his free time.

Whos your LGBT hero?

Aaron Schock. Hey gurl! In seriousness, Ill
say Katya Zamolochidkova, the drag queen.
Shes a hilarious weirdo who approaches her
work with intelligence and joy. I also admire
how she consistently churns out great web
content. Yaaass, enterprising queen.
Whats Washingtons best nightspot, past
or present?
For a sit-and-talk night, I love good ole Saloon
on U Street. If Im trying to be gay in public,
Town, especially the CTRL party every month.
Describe your dream wedding.
We get married in a big, unnecessary
treehouse somewhere in Hawaii. Everyone
in the wedding party roller-skates down the
aisle. Our ring-bearers are Roy and Silo, those
two penguins from the Central Park Zoo who
used to be a gay couple but broke up to be
with lady penguins, but theyre obviously
going to get drunk and hook up again at this
wedding. Also, Sia is there.
What non-LGBT issue are you most
passionate about?
Feminism. Humankind has treated certain
types of people unequally for so long that
were still struggling to do anything else.
But we need to keep working actively on
that, because our species is so much better
o when everyone can achieve their full
potential and contribute.
What historical outcome would you
change?
The entire formation process of the Bible. I
have no animosity toward religious faith; I just
think the Bible was a case of some timeless
wisdom getting smushed together with some
very time-specic cultural commentary and
straight-up folklore, and it all being marketed
as literal, inerrant truth. Its been used as a
justication to treat other people horribly
throughout history.
Whats been the most memorable pop
culture moment of your lifetime?
Mean Girls. For my generation, its reached
the point where you basically cant participate
in society if you havent seen it.

202.747.2077

On what do you insist?

Humor, humility and respect.
What was your last Facebook post or

Twitter: My given name is Daniel, but you
can call me Nasty Woman.
If your life were a book, what would the
title be?
Oh Hey You Guyyys
If science discovered a way to change
sexual orientation, what would you do?
Id turn straight, quit my job and start a new
life in Santa Fe. There, Id romance a female
accounts executive, knock her up just to
satisfy my petty biological drive to copy
myself and bide my time until she came to
term at which point Id turn gay again, kidnap
the baby and run away with a muscle-bound
biker daddy, leaving the traumatized mother
of my child alone in our sham home, weeping
bitter tears and plotting revenge.
What do you believe in beyond the
physical world?
Buy the Vampire Slayer
Whats your advice for LGBT movement
leaders?
Dont demonize your enemies; understand
them. If you want to change hearts and
minds, you have to speak to people where
they are. Listen and learn where people are
coming from, then build a bridge to there.
What would you walk across hot coals
for?
More Instagram followers. Eww, I hate me.
What LGBT stereotype annoys you most?
Not really a stereotype, but I think a lot of the
general public is still skeptical of bisexuality.
Kinsey up, bitches.
Whats your favorite LGBT movie?
You mean aside from Sean Cody? Ill say
Beautiful Thing. It feels both lifelike and fairy
tale-like, and it was formative for Tween Dan.
I read an embarrassing amount of Jamie/Ste
fanction back in the day.
Whats the most overrated social custom?
Drinking alcohol at, like, every event. (...
Because I wish we smoked weed sometimes
instead.)
What trophy or prize do you most covet?
An audience. I try to create work that satises
me rst and foremost, but I also want what I
do to connect with people to excite them,
delight them, resonate with them, scratch
itches for them. Theres no greater validation
and it makes art feel like less of a selsh
endeavor.
What do you wish youd known at 18?
More gay people.
Why Washington?
It looks good in a suit, it follows the news and
it lets you down gently because it knows its
going to keep running into you at Bear Happy
Hour.

The
Alexandria
Film
Festival
(alexlmfest.com) returns Nov. 10-13 to
celebrate local, national and international
lms with 40 screenings and events.
One of the highlights of the festival
is The Pearl of Africa by Swedish
lmmaker Andr Vallstrom. This moving
documentary tells the story of Cleopatra
Kambugu, a 28-year-old Ugandan
transgender woman. For 18 months,
Vallstrom followed Cleopatra and her
partner Nelson as they fought against
Ugandas notorious Anti-Homosexuality
Act. While the law was nally struck down
by the Ugandan Constitutional Court, the
country remains a dangerous place for
LGBT people. The movie focuses on the
young couples remarkable love story,
as well as their struggle to ght systemic
discrimination and prejudice against
trans people in East Africa.
The Pearl of Africa will be presented at the
AMC Homan Center 22 on Saturday, Nov.
12 at 3 p.m. Following the screening, there
will be a Q&A with director Andr Vallstrom.
Another queer highlight of the festival is
The Whole World, written and directed
by openly gay Spanish lmmaker and
theater artist Julin Quintanilla, who also
stars. Described as an emotional comedy
based on a true story, the short is about a
young man who visits his mothers grave
every year. This year, his indomitable and
domineering mother (Loles Len, known
for her work in several Pedro Almodvar
movies) has a special request for Julin.
The Whole World will screen for
free at the Beatley Central Library in
Alexandria on Friday, Nov. 11. The multitalented Quintanilla will be on hand
for a Q&A after. There will also be an
encore screening of the movie as part of
screening no. 16 on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 4
p.m. at the AMC Homan Center 22.
Openly gay director Andrew KeenanBolger, whose short Sign was one

of the highlights of the recent Reel

Armations Film Festival, is represented
in the Alexandria Film Festival by The
Ceiling Fan, which he co-directed with
Kate Wetherhead. Their short drama
is about a young woman named Casey
(Wetherhead) whos making renovations
to her country house with only the aid of
Drake Thomas (Andrew Samonsky), an
online handyman. The movie is part of
screening no. 15 on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 4
p.m. at the AMC Homan Center 22.
The festival kicks o on Thursday evening
with a free screening of the documentary
Nighthawks on the Blue Highway,
which chronicles the turbulent 40-year
history of the popular local blues band. The
movie will screen at 7 p.m. at Alexandria
Market Square and will be followed by a live
concert from the Nighthawks.
Other showcases include a foodie
showcase on Saturday, with short movies
about collard greens and Darjeeling tea;
the local showcase on Saturday with
When Mickey Came to Town, about
the residents of Central Virginia ghting
plans for a Disney history theme park; and,
a sports showcase that includes White
House Hockey, a short documentary
about a long-running street hockey game
held outside 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Another highlight of the festival will
be Rosenwald by local award-winning
lmmaker Aviva Kempner. It focuses on
Julius Rosenwald, the son of an immigrant
peddler who became an owner of Sears,
Roebuck & Company. Through the
Rosenwald Fund, the Chicago philanthropist
partnered with Booker T. Washington to
build schools for African-American children
across the south and housing and YMCAs
for African-American families in the north
during the Jim Crow era.
The documentary will screen on
Sunday at 1 p.m. at the AMC Homan
Center 22. The screening will be followed
by a Q&A with author Stephanie Deutsch
who appears in the movie and who wrote
a book on the partnership between
Rosenwald and Washington.

With a string of classics under the

belt, Melissa Etheridge is not an artist
who needs to rely on the songwriter
chops of others unless she want to pay
homage to some of the greats, and thats
exactly what she does on her supremely
entertaining ode to the birthplace of rock
and roll, Memphis Rock and Soul.
Perhaps, given the obvious debt that
Etheridge owes to the blues and the early
days of R&B and rock that blasted out of
Memphis and eventually took over the
country, it was a logical step for Etheridge
to pause her own prolic stream of
songwriting and pay homage to those
who made her career possible. Anybody
who has been to Memphis, basked in the
glorious histories of the Sun and Stax
Studios, or Graceland, or listened to the
endless stream of live music that can still
be heard on on Beale Street, understands
the importance of the citys history in the
formation of rock and roll.
Memphis is the great melting pot
of soul, gospel, blues, jazz, rockabilly,
country and everything else under the
sun that merged to form what we know
is rock and roll, and it was the pioneering
local record companies and DJs who
helped spread this wild new sound across
the airwaves to the masses.
Etheridge runs through a dozen
energetic classics, sounding fresh and
revitalized. Her voice has never sounded
better as she tackles the standard
Memphis Train, paying homage not
only to the city in the bluesy classic but
also to the well-worn tradition of train
songs which are an inexorable part of the
fabric of early rock and roll. Her stirring
cover of Respect Yourself answers the
question once and for all do some of
these songs, many of which have been
recorded dozens of times, really need
yet another rendition? The answer, in
the hands of Melissa Etheridge, is an

.

emphatic yes. Shes clearly having a blast

with this album, and her infectious energy
comes through in every note.
Etheridge
delivers
a
raucous,
wonderfully raspy vocal on the the old
R&B chestnut Hold On, Im Coming,
one of the albums undeniable highlights.
She also takes on the slow waltz ballad
Ive Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop
Now), and oers a heartfelt performance
that is truly breathtaking. She may not
have written these great songs, but unlike
some artists with the temerity to tackle
the classics, Etheridge has the vocal chops
and the musical knowledge to pull them
o with genuine authenticity and verve.
The blues favorite Rock Me Baby is
another standout, with some scorching
lead guitar and a vocal that might not quite
match Tina Turners seminal version, but
Etheridge certainly does herself proud.
Billy Idol fans may recognize I Forgot
to Be Your Lover, an old R&B ballad that
he reworked into the high-energy 80s hit
To Be A Lover. Etheridge reclaims the
original and gives yet another dynamite
performance of a truly beautiful ballad.
The album ends with the gospel-tinged
Ive Got Dreams to Remember, and its
a perfect summation of everything that
came before. Like the melting pot that
was Memphis itself, Etheridge touches
upon all the dierent styles that led to the
genre to which shes devoted her career:
rock and roll. She does it with reverence
and respect for the material, delivering
one great vocal after another and her
song choices are diverse and shrewd.
Its a fantastic showcase for Etheridge,
a nostalgic but fresh celebration of the
music that launched a thousand radio hits.
Many cover albums, especially genre
exercises like this one, can be painful, but
Etheridge pulls it o beautifully. Put it on,
close your eyes, and let yourself drift back
to another time when it was still taboo
for black artists to be on the radio and
interracial couples were strictly taboo and
rock and roll was in its formative stages.
There is great music to be mined from
this era, and Etheridge does a marvelous
job holding the shovel.

Players value fun,

camaraderie over winning
By KEVIN MAJOROS
In this weeks installment of the
Washington Blade series spotlighting the
rookies and veterans who make up the
LGBT sports teams in D.C., we check in with
two LGBT players from Stonewall Dodgeball.
Stonewall Dodgeball burst onto the
LGBT sports scene in 2014 and quickly
outgrew its venue. Now operating out of
the Washington D.C. Jewish Community
Center, players are wrapping up their fall
season with playos to begin next week.
The league rotates seasons between a
draft system where the players may not
know each other, and a season where the
teams are formed by the players.
John Elias signed up for his rst season in
April of 2016, a draft season. He only knew
one person on his team and half of his
teammates were also new to the league.
The draft makes the league more
accessible to new people, Elias says.
This was completely outside my zone
and I have been surprised by how much I
am enjoying it.
Elias was born in California and grew
up in Plainville, Conn., and other than
running junior varsity cross country, did
not play sports. While earning his degrees
at Yale and Stanford Law School, he
played ultimate Frisbee recreationally.
He moved to D.C. in 2006 and is working
as a lawyer for the federal government.
After giving Stonewall Bocce a try, he
decided he wanted to play a new sport.
I thought dodgeball would be fun,
energetic and athletic, Elias says. I only
consider myself to have moderate athletic
ability, so I wanted something that would
be a good time without having to take it
too seriously.

If I knew I was going

to live to 86, I wouldnt
have let the maid go.

Elias says he was a little lost at rst

in terms of the team dynamics, but
Stonewall Dodgeball oers open gyms on
the weekends to work on skills and he has

especially his team captains.
The veterans have been great for
giving tips on timing and positioning,
Elias says. My captains have been
good about directing trac, pacing and
instructions on playing our own game.
They even send out strategy emails.
UPCOMING PERFORMANCES
The social aspect has also been a plus
for Elias and he has met an entirely new
group of people.
We recently had a social outing to laser
tag in Virginia, Elias says. I am having a
blast, all while getting a real workout.
THURSDAY NOV 3
Sean Holihan is in his sixth season with
Stonewall Dodgeball with three seasons
as a team captain. He has also played
multiple seasons with Chesapeake and
Potomac Softball, the D.C. Gay Flag
Football League and Stonewall Kickball.
Originally from New York, Holihan grew

Scandals, secrets in
the 20th century
Warren Hardings 1920 campaign
for president had two old cronies from
Ohio at his side, Harry Daugherty and
Jess Smith. Once president, Daugherty
became attorney general and Smith
helped Mrs. Harding pick out clothes.
As Carl Sferrazza Anthony recounts,
while both men had married, they lived
together and the Hardings treated them
socially as a couple. Smith would be
found dead in their apartment under
mysterious circumstances.
When Lorena Hickok was assigned to
cover Franklin Roosevelts rst presidential
campaign in 1932, she reportedly fell for
his wife. Eleanor Roosevelts bisexuality is
well documented as is her contribution
to her husbands political success and
substantial accomplishments in her own
right.
Dwight D. Eisenhower felt he had to seek
the resignation of Arthur Vandenberg,
Jr., a key player in his 1952 bid for the
presidency. FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover
had informed the president-elect that
Vandenberg was a homosexual, ignoring
the admonition about those in glass
houses.
By 1960, Lem Billings, arguably John F.
Kennedys best friend, actively worked to
get him elected. Billingss homosexuality
was an open secret to those who knew
him well.
Lyndon Johnsons long-time right-hand

man, Walter Jenkins, was also a trusted

friend.
But then Jenkins, a married
man with six children, was arrested
for soliciting another man at a YMCA
restroom mere weeks before the 1964
presidential election. Johnson reluctantly
had to cut Jenkins loose, but he never
abandoned their friendship.

REALESTATE

This house could be yours for $1 billion

All offers due by Nov. 8 for
January occupancy
By VALERIE M. BLAKE
If youre looking for a move-up home
suitable for an extended family or a bevy
of guests, then consider this beautiful,
six-story mansion that sits on a well-manicured lot in the 1600 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. It has recently come on
the market for the first time in eight years
and, after more than a year of preparation, is now ready for new ownership.
Designed by architect James Hoban and
built of Aquia Creek sandstone between
1792 and 1800, its neoclassical exterior
features graceful columns and 570 gallons of fresh, white paint. Thoughtful additions have preserved the symmetry of
its elegant faade as owners and tenants
have continued to renovate and expand
this historic dwelling over many years.
Your homeland will feel secure within
this fully fenced, gated community, where
an intercom system, closed-circuit television cameras and a professional guard
service provide an unassailable sanctuary. You may also install a huge perimeter
wall should you desire and the seller
will pay for it!
Several gardens are located on the spacious lot, including a bed of roses and a
proportionately small vegetable plot for
those vegans with green thumbs. The
expansive yard offers plenty of space to
hold political rallies and holiday events,
including Easter egg hunting, Christmas
tree lighting and the ever-popular Hal-

loween cat grabbing.

Sporting 132 rooms, 35 baths, 28 fireplaces, a centrally located executive suite
and a guest cottage on the grounds, you
may also find this property appropriate for use as a bed and breakfast or for
rental on Airbnb. Just be sure to obtain
the proper Basic Business License (BBL)
from the Department of Consumer and
Regulatory Affairs (DCRA).
The primary home office is oddly
shaped, but there are plenty of square
and rectangular offices for use by your
staff. In fact, a whole wing on the west
side of the home has been added for you
to monitor the Miss Universe contest and
the proliferation of nuclear arms.
Need a ballroom for a wedding, an inauguration, or a charitable foundation
event? This house has it!
Hosting a dinner party for your favorite
heads of state? An extraordinary chef will
whip up a gourmet meal to serve up to 140

seated guests in the elegant dining room.

Dont have a favorite head of state? No
problem. The District of Columbia is 4/20
friendly, so invite the State of New Mexico
over to toke up, Netflix and chill, and then
stop by the take-out window at the Navy
Mess for a nosh.
Theres even a helipad on the estate
from which to whisk you away to your
favorite campground, but when youre
ready for a staycation youll also have
plenty of options.
Enjoy competing with friends and family on the tennis court, outrunning the
second amendment people on the jogging track, or diving for campaign dollars
in the swimming pool.
You can also watch short films in the
movie theater with Billy and Roger, shoot
pool with nasty women in the billiards
room, or discuss a strike, military or otherwise, with the generals while on the
bowling lanes.

The current tenants have been given

their first right to purchase documents
pursuant to D.C.s Tenants Opportunity
to Purchase Act (TOPA), but they have
already found new housing nearby and
have indicated that they will not be exercising those rights.
This fabulous residence is available
for occupancy in late January and, at the
purse-pleasing price of roughly a billion
dollars to close, will not last long. Offers
are being accepted early but must include
the following supporting documents.
A completed financial information
sheet showing no bankruptcies;
A copy of your tax returns for the past
5 years;
A pre-approval letter from a Wall Street
banker;
A 10 percent earnest money deposit
made out to The Clinton Foundation;
A plea of nolo contendere; and
A letter addressed to the current owners indicating why you are the best qualified person to live in the home.
At the moment we have four offers registered, but two are of little consequence,
so please submit your best and final offer
by 8 p.m. Eastern time on Tuesday, Nov.
8, 2016 by email only to valerie@myprivateserver.com.
All offers will be acknowledged but not
independently verified. The results of any
bidding war will be made public following
the Apocalypse.
