In an exclusive interview with the
Washington Blade, Hillary Clinton pledged
to build a hopeful, inclusive America where
everyone counts as she continues to draw
a contrast between herself and Donald
Trump over their views on LGBT issues.
The Democratic presidential hopeful
answered 13 questions on issues
important to the LGBT community
in a written interview with the Blade
completed Wednesday with less than one
week remaining before Election Day.
We have so much more work to do,
and I want LGBT people in every corner
of this country to know that as president,
I will always have your back, Clinton said.
In the interview, Clinton recommitted
herself to pushing comprehensive LGBT
non-discrimination legislation known as
the Equality Act and to work to ensure
the prohibition on gender discrimination
under current law applies to LGBT people.
As president, Ill make ghting
discrimination
against
the
LGBT
community a top priority including
by working with Congress to pass the
Equality Act, Clinton said. And we wont
stop there. Well also take on harassment,
bullying, and violence and youth
homelessness, which disproportionately
hurts LGBT kids.
For the rst time, Clinton explicitly
vowed to veto the First Amendment
Defense Act, a federal religious freedom
bill that would enable anti-LGBT
discrimination.
In response to Trumps criticism over
the Clinton Foundation accepting millions
of dollars from countries with anti-LGBT
laws, Clinton laid out the charitys work
combatting the global HIV/AIDS epidemic
and pointed out Trump has had business
dealings with these same countries for the
sole purpose of padding his own pockets.
Clinton also identied as a personal
role model Edith Windsor, the plainti
in the lawsuit that led the U.S. Supreme
Court to strike down the Defense of
Marriage Act in 2013.
Edie is a truly remarkable woman:
smart, feisty, and very brave, Clinton
said. She came of age at a time when
many LGBT people felt they couldnt live
openly but she had the courage to stand
up for her marriage in such a bold, public
way and the faith to believe that justice
would ultimately prevail.
The Washington Blade agreed to
conduct the written interview with
Clinton and submitted similar questions

future as president.
Since our ght rst began, infection
rates have fallen in many places, more
people with HIV are getting life-saving
treatment, and more babies born to
HIV-positive mothers are getting the
treatment they need to avoid infection.
But HIV and AIDS are still with us. More
than 1.2 million people live with HIV in the
United States, and globally, HIV aicts a
total of 37 million people. So weve made
a lot of progress toward this goal but
we still have our work cut out for us.
I believe that now is the time to
rededicate ourselves to achieving the
AIDS-free generation that is within our
grasp. Thats why as president I will
convene an End the Epidemic working
group to end AIDS as an epidemic in
the United States and globally. Here at
home, well expand the availability of HIV
prevention medications like PrEP, take
on disparities and barriers to accessing
care, cap out-of-pocket drug costs,
and launch a campaign to end stigma
and discrimination. Around the world,
well dramatically increase the number
of people on HIV treatment through
programs like PEPFAR, increase our
investment in HIV and AIDS research, and
engage in public education campaigns
in key countries where stigma and
discrimination are rampant.
Blade: You have been a devout
Methodist throughout your life and
cited that as inspiration for seeking to
help others, but the Methodist Church
wont ociate or recognize same-sex
marriages. Should the church embrace
same-sex marriage and do you expect
that will happen?
Clinton: Im deeply grateful for my
faith, and the church that has nurtured
it since I was a young girl. As Ive said, I
believe we can protect religious liberty
while ensuring that all Americans are
treated equally under the law. On a
personal level, I am going to keep ghting
for equality and encouraging others to
embrace the LGBT community because I
think its the right thing to do.
Blade: You made international LGBT
rights a priority as secretary of state.
How would you advocate for them as
president?
Clinton: LGBT rights are human rights
plain and simple. No matter what we look
like, where we come from, or who we are,
we are all equally entitled to our human
rights and dignity. But hundreds of millions
of people live in places where anti-LGBT
violence is rampant and where they can
be arrested, imprisoned, even executed for
their sexual orientation or gender identity.
As president, Ill continue to stand
up for LGBT rights around the world,

At Large, Nov. 8
NEW YORK Researchers are now saying that the strain of HIV responsible for
almost all AIDS cases in the U.S. was carried from Zaire to Haiti around 1967 and
spread from there to New York City about 1971, according to new information
published in the journal Nature reported on by the New York Times and other
outlets. From New York, it spread to San Francisco around 1976.
The new information appears to exonerate Gaetan Dugas, the FrenchCanadian ight attendant long known as patient zero who was though to have
brought HIV to the U.S.
The new data is consistent with the scenario described in 2011 in The Origin
of AIDS, by Dr. Jacques Ppin, an infectious disease specialist at the University
of Sherbrooke in Quebec.
Relying on previous genetic research and African colonial records, Ppin
showed that HIV was carried from Kinshasa to Haiti in the 1960s, most likely by
one of the thousands of Haitian civil servants recruited by the United Nations
to work in the former Belgian Congo after colonial rule collapsed, the Times
reports.
In Haiti, he theorized, a few cases were multiplied by unsterile conditions at
a private blood-collecting company Hemo-Caribbean, that opened in 1971 and
exported 1,600 gallons of plasma to the United States monthly. Plasma clotting
factors were used by American hemophiliacs, many of whom died of AIDS.
Haiti was also a sex-tourism destination for gay men, another route the virus
could have taken to New York.
The blood samples analyzed in the new study were collected in 1978 and 1979
in New York City and San Francisco as part of an eort to make a hepatitis B
vaccine. Researchers stored almost 16,000 blood samples; nearly 7 percent of
those from New York and 4 percent of those from California later turned out to
be infected with HIV, the New York Times reports.
A team led by Michael Worobey, an evolutionary biologist at the University
of Arizona in Tucson and the lead author of the Nature paper, sequenced the
genomes of the HIV found in some of those samples and compared them with
viral DNA in samples collected in the early 1980s from Haitians, Dominicans and
others treated in American hospitals, according to the Times article.
Because decades spent in freezers had degraded many samples, Worobey
said, his lab developed an RNA jackhammering technique similar to that used
to reconstruct the ancient Neanderthal genome. Counting mutations allowed
the researchers to wind back the molecular clock and see when each strain of
HIV diverged from its ancestors, the Times reports.
Africa has a dozen HIV groups, and Haitis epidemic came from one of those.
The New York samples all derive from one Haitian strain, and those from San
Francisco are all so closely related that they probably all resulted from one
person introducing one New York strain, Worobey said according to the New
York Times.

As we get close to electing our next president, thoughts turn to the transition teams
working to help sta up the new administration. While each of the major candidates has
one, only one will continue to work, gear up
and be in full operation beginning Nov. 9.
There are thousands of jobs in a new administration to be lled. Positions at every
level of government. Some such as Cabinet
secretaries and ambassadors will require
Senate conrmation, others the new president can appoint and they can get to work
immediately. These are jobs in the White
House and all federal agencies and require
a broad range of skills.

Dan Milliken was tired of the same straight, white, male voices in improv
he was used to seeing in standup comedy. But he knew a handful of gay
performers in other troupes and decided to see if theyd be interested in
joining him in something queerer.
Happily, they agreed, Milliken says. It felt fresh and sort of disruptive to
throw a bunch of uppity queers together and see what havoc we might wreak.
Their group, dubbed simply Ugh, will perform at the fourth annual District
Improv Festival which runs Nov. 9-12 at Source (1835 14th St., N.W.) and
Unied Scene Theater (80 T St., N.W.). Admission ranges from free to $15 for
various events. Full details at districtimprov.org. Local talent as well as groups
from as far away as Phoenix and Toronto will appear.
For the festival, Ugh plans a brief, informal interview with a random
audience member followed by a wholly improvised set of scenes inspired by
whatever comes up in the interview.
Milliken loves the format because it invariably comes out kind of loose and
goofy, but with these moments of uncalculated honesty.
At its best, you get to see the real human experience but ltered through this
lens of joy and levity, the 27-year-old Bethesda, Md., native says. I love that.
Milliken works by day as a server and bartender at Commissary. Hes
single and lives in Logan Circle. He enjoys performing, teaching and directing
comedy and theater, songwriting, hiking, camping and drinking on patios in
his free time.

Whats your advice for LGBT movement

Dont demonize your enemies; understand

An audience. I try to create work that satises

(alexlmfest.com) returns Nov. 10-13 to
celebrate local, national and international
lms with 40 screenings and events.
One of the highlights of the festival
is The Pearl of Africa by Swedish
lmmaker Andr Vallstrom. This moving
documentary tells the story of Cleopatra
Kambugu, a 28-year-old Ugandan
transgender woman. For 18 months,
Vallstrom followed Cleopatra and her
partner Nelson as they fought against
Ugandas notorious Anti-Homosexuality
Act. While the law was nally struck down
by the Ugandan Constitutional Court, the
country remains a dangerous place for
LGBT people. The movie focuses on the
young couples remarkable love story,
as well as their struggle to ght systemic
discrimination and prejudice against
trans people in East Africa.
The Pearl of Africa will be presented at the
AMC Homan Center 22 on Saturday, Nov.
12 at 3 p.m. Following the screening, there
will be a Q&A with director Andr Vallstrom.
Another queer highlight of the festival is
The Whole World, written and directed
by openly gay Spanish lmmaker and
theater artist Julin Quintanilla, who also
stars. Described as an emotional comedy
based on a true story, the short is about a
young man who visits his mothers grave
every year. This year, his indomitable and
domineering mother (Loles Len, known
for her work in several Pedro Almodvar
movies) has a special request for Julin.
The Whole World will screen for

One of the greatest American plays of our time, Guares script examines the
threads of chance that link one person to another. A splendidly funny, often
disquieting, exploration of the way human beings dene themselves and
classify each other.

Eleanor Roosevelts bisexuality has been well documented by historians. Journalist Lorena Hickok
fell for the rst lady while covering FDRs rst presidential campaign in 1932.

Scandals, secrets in
the 20th century
Warren Hardings 1920 campaign
for president had two old cronies from
Ohio at his side, Harry Daugherty and
Jess Smith. Once president, Daugherty
became attorney general and Smith
helped Mrs. Harding pick out clothes.
As Carl Sferrazza Anthony recounts,
while both men had married, they lived
together and the Hardings treated them
socially as a couple. Smith would be
found dead in their apartment under
mysterious circumstances.
When Lorena Hickok was assigned to
cover Franklin Roosevelts rst presidential
campaign in 1932, she reportedly fell for
his wife. Eleanor Roosevelts bisexuality is
well documented as is her contribution
to her husbands political success and
substantial accomplishments in her own
right.
Dwight D. Eisenhower felt he had to seek
the resignation of Arthur Vandenberg,
Jr., a key player in his 1952 bid for the
presidency. FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover
had informed the president-elect that
Vandenberg was a homosexual, ignoring
the admonition about those in glass
houses.
By 1960, Lem Billings, arguably John F.
Kennedys best friend, actively worked to
get him elected. Billingss homosexuality
was an open secret to those who knew
him well.
