TEKS-

3rd Grade Reading 3.8

Students understand and draw
conclusions about the structure and
elements of fiction and provide
evidence to support understanding.

Objective:

After reading in-class narrative literature

selection, students will select and list 5
main characters and write a description
of each by the end of the lesson.

Big UnderstandingsStudents use a flexible range of

metacognitive reading skills in both
assigned and independent reading to
understand and authors message.
Students will continue to apply earlier
standards with greater depth in
increasingly more complex texts as they
become self-directed, critical readers.

Assessment Evidence
Formative Assessment- At the end of the lesson each student will complete a
description graphic organizer for each of the 5 characters they selected. Students
must provide at least three complete sentences for the description to receive full
credit.
Summative Assessment- Students will work on a portfolio assignment in which
they create a power point or wanted poster for their selected character including
answers to questions contained on the rubric. Students will be assessed by the
criteria outlined on the rubric.

Opening Hook-

Teacher will invite students into the lesson by explaining

that they will be playing a guessing game based on the story. The guessing game
power point, Who am I? will then be presented. Students will raise their hands as
they think they know who it is until all hands are raised.

Input-

Students will have finished reading in-class narrative selection. Each

student should have a copy of the text.

Modeling- Teacher will model what the students will need to put on their

graphic organizer by completing the first box with them using clues given in Who
Am I? activity. This will be modeled on the smartboard with the created
PowerPoint.

Guided Practice/Monitoring-

Students will then work within

their groups to share ideas and complete their organizers. Teacher will monitor
answer questions and provide direction as needed.

Check for Understanding

Teacher will ask students questions in

regards to what other characters can they think of, what may be a good
descriptive word, etc.

Material/ResourcesCopy of selected text for each student.

Blank graphic organizer, and student journal for each student.
Pre-designed PowerPoint presentation.

Grouping Patterns-

Students will work together based on either their

table groups or colored cards passed out to students.

Ending, Summary/Reflection-

When students have finished,

the teacher will direct them to turn in their organizer and select one favorite
character from their activity and journal write as much as they can about the
selected character while answering rubric questions and drawing pictures to use
on their summative portfolio project.
