1.

In the mechanism shown in figure 1, the crank OA rotates at 20 rpm anticlockwise and
gives motion to the sliding blocks B and D. The dimensions of various links are
OA = 300 mm, AB = 1200 mm, BC = 450 mm and CD = 450 mm.
For this configuration determine:
(i) Velocity of sliding blocks at B and D
(ii) Angular velocity of CD
(iii) Linear acceleration of D
(iv) Angular acceleration of CD

Draw profile of a cam for the follower having following kind of motions:
(i) Follower moves outwards through 30 mm during 180o of the cam rotation with
simple harmonic motion (SHM)
(ii) Follower dwells for 20o of the cam rotation
(iii) Follower returns with uniform velocity during the remaining 160o of the cam
rotation.
The base circle of the diameter of the cam is 28 mm and the roller diameter 8 mm.
The axis of the follower is offset by 6 mm to the left. What will be the maximum
velocity and acceleration of the follower during outstroke if the cam rotates at
1500 rpm counter-clockwise.

3.

A belt drive is required to transmit 10 kW from a motor running at 600 rpm. The belt is
12 mm thick and has a mass density of 1000 kg/m3. Safe stress in the belt is not to
exceed 2.5 N/mm2. Diameter of the driving pulley is 250 mm whereas the speed of the
driven pulley is 220 rpm. The two shafts are 1.25 m apart. The coefficient of friction is
0.25. Determine the width of the belt.

4.

A shaft carries four rotating masses A, B, C and D in this order along its axis. The mass
A may be assumed to be concentrated at a radius of 180 mm, B at 240 mm, C at 120 mm
and D at 150 mm. The masses of B, C and D are 30 kg, 50 kg and 40 kg respectively.
The planes containing B and C are 300 mm apart. The angular spacing of the planes,
containing C and D are 90o and 210o, respectively relative to B measured in the same
sense. If the shaft and masses are to be in complete dynamic balance, find
(i) The magnitude and angular position of mass A,
(ii) The position of the planes A and D.

5.

The turbine rotor of a ship has a mass of 6000 kg and rotates at 2400 rpm clockwise
when viewed from stern (or rear) end. The radius of gyration of the rotor is 450 mm.
Determine the gyroscopic couple and its effect when
(i) The ship turns left at a radius of 60 m with a speed of 9.3 m/s.
(ii) The ship pitches with the bow rising at an angular velocity of 0.091 rad/s.
(iii) The ship rolls at an angular velocity of 0.035 rad/s.

6.

A machine part having a mass of 2.5 kg vibrates in a viscous medium. A harmonic

exciting force of 30 N acts on the part and causes a resonant amplitude of 14 mm with a
period of 0.22 second. Find the damping coefficient.
If the frequency of the exciting force is changed to 4 Hz, determine the increase in the
amplitude of the forced vibrations upon removal of the damper.

Following data relate to two meshing involute gears:

Number of teeth on the gear wheel = 60
Pressure angle = 20o
Gear ratio = 1.5
Speed of the gear wheel =100 rpm
Module = 8 mm
The addendum on each wheel is such that the path of approach and path of recess on
each side are 40% of the maximum possible length each. Determine the addendum for
the pinion and the gear and the length of the arc of contact.
